For the love of riding Wells gets call

Shawna Wells can describe with great detail the moment Ian Millar asked her if she could jump (a horse).

Wells had been working as a professional show groom for the Millar family on the Florida show circuit in early 2009.

She had just been promoted to barn manager/young horse trainer at Millar Brooke Farm in Ontario.

“I froze, and thought, ‘is he asking do I jump the way he jumps?’” she said.

Willing but unsure, Wells’ answer was yes, and immediately he sent her off to set up two cavaletti jumps up in the arena.

Following the jump, Wells sat as Millar critiqued her form. She said it was a critical turning point in her stay at the farm – not because of the advice she received – but because she offered a thank you in return.

“I could have sat there ghost faced with all the things he said, but I was so thankful that he would do things like that,” she said.

“Ian’s hard to work for, people know that, it’s not a secret, but he taught me the world and once you’ve earned his trust, he is so giving to teach.”

There are just some things in life that never

change, like a little girl’s love of horses.

The same sentiment can still be said of 28-year-old Shawna Wells. The Alberni born-and-raised equestrian coach and trainer has worked at Spruce Meadows, and for Canadian show jumping legend Ian Millar in Ontario and Florida, but these days, you’ll find her back at home on her Beaver Creek farm – in the barn, of course.

“Like every girl, I had a dream of having a horse and jumping,” Wells said. “I still watch jumping on TV and get excited when the horse goes over the jump, my heart races.”

Following the opening of West Brooke Equestrian Centre in July 2012, Wells has been working hard to strengthen the horse community in the Alberni Valley.

“Growing up here, there wasn’t a lot of community,” she said. “There were a couple of riding schools – which I grew up with and loved – but there was also a lot of diversity.”

The world of riding horses is generally classified into many different types of disciplines. Some of those include dressage, show jumping, western pleasure, barrel racing, and cross-country. And then there are those horse owners who keep horses at home but ride them non-competitively.

While Port Alberni has always been well serviced in the western riding genre, Wells said she has seen many local riders have to look to out of town venues to expand their riding skills or showing experience.

“Life happens and either you come back or you fall in love with a facility elsewhere and don’t come home,” she said.

West Brooke was born to not only address the needs of Alberni horse owners and riders but to also make the wonderful world of horses accessible to all.

“You drive down Beaver Creek or Walker Road and how many horses do you pass,” she said.

“Part of my goal has been, ‘how do we find all these people and horses and bring them together and just enjoy horses,” Wells said.

“Part of where I also felt Port Alberni was lacking is in coaches bringing in new students, that are good with children, that educate children of what horses are about and bring in new ‘stock’ that will be our next equestrian generation.”

Wells opened her first riding school and training facility, Secret Creek Stables, directly across from West Brooke’s Drinkwater Road location. From those humble beginnings, Wells saw the opportunity

for growth, and was ecstatic when the 17-acre equestrian facility West Brooke now operates on came up for sale.

The property features a large indoor riding arena, which is crucial for all-year riding in Port Alberni’s notoriously wet weather.

West Brooke is currently home to 12 school horses and more than a dozen boarders, and offers lessons, leases, clinics, shows and to riders of all ages and levels.

In addition to hosting clinics in a variety of disciplines, West Brooke has also been home to Parks and Rec summer camps.

The facility hosted its first horse

schooling show Dec. 1, with 30 participants, and will host another, named ‘Spring Fling’, on April 26. Admission is free and families who are interested in learning more about horses are welcome to come out and watch the show.

Wells said there is a misconception amongst some families that horses are too expensive, but she said it is quite comparable to other extra-curricular sports like hockey.

Wells, along with her mom Darlene Coulson, co-owner of WBEC, are hard at work expanding the facility, as revenue allows, to accommodate bigger events, similar to those in Victoria.

Next on the wish list is a round pen and outdoor riding arena, with grass rings in the future.

“I want to take the experience that I’ve learned everywhere else and bring that back here and show people a way it can be done without the drama and make [West Brooke] something for everyone,” Wells said.

“It doesn’t matter what saddle you ride in, whether you ride a donkey, or ride sideways, just come ride with us.”

A woman injured during a

police arrest in February expects answers from the Independent Investigations Office.

Cecelia Bigstone, 59, suffered a broken knee after a struggle with two RCMP officers on the corner of Eighth Avenue and Maitland Street on Feb. 15.

“A lot of other people don’t say anything when it comes to dealing with the law. Well I don’t believe that,” Bigstone said. “I have the right to speak up and I want them held accountable for what happened to me.”

According to Bigstone, she lost her temper that morning at the local Ministry of Social Development Office because she was unable to secure a mid-month cheque.

She left the office

and was walking along Eighth Avenue heading home. Shortly after 10:45 a.m. she was pulled over by police.

Bigstone admits she’d been drinking alcohol, and wasn’t supposed to as part of a court order from a previous matter.

She said she gave police her name, and admitted she knew shouldn’t have been drinking.

Bigstone said she pushed away from the officers, then a struggle ensued that ended up with the three of them in a heap on the ground.

“My leg twisted when I went down and I screamed “My leg is broken, you broke my leg,” she said.

Bigstone said she was cuffed then lifted and placed in the back of the police car.

Bigstone was booked and then placed in a cell, she said.

The IIO reported that the BC Ambulance Service responded to a call

at the police station and that a female was transported to West Coast General Hospital where she was treated.

BC Ambulance officials confirm that an ambulance transported Bigstone from the RCMP station to WCGH at 11:12 a.m.

Doctors at WCGH diagnosed Bigstone with a broken knee cap. She was transported to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital where she underwent major repair surgery.

A long staple marked scar runs from the top of her knee to her mid-shin. “I’ve got plates and screws holding my knee together now,” she said.

The IIO asserted its jurisdiction in the matter and started its investigation on Feb. 25. The IIO conducts investigations into police related incidents of death or serious harm to determine whether

or not an officer may have committed an offence.

According to the IIO, police reported that Bigstone was in violation of a court order when she was arrested.

RCMP previously declined to comment on the matter, citing the investigation.

According to officials from Port Alberni Provincial Court, Bigstone is charged with two counts of assaulting a police officer and one count of obstruction relating to the incident.

Bigstone says she hasn’t spoken to a lawyer about what happened yet but will once she’s better able. “I want some answers about what happened, and I want someone held responsible,” she said.

The case is still under investigation therefore it can’t be commented on in any way, said IIO official Owen Court.

At the conclusion of the investigation, officials will either send a report to Crown counsel if they feel an officer has committed an offense, or make a public report if there was no offense committed.

The incident has attracted the attention of the Pivot Legal Society on the Lower Mainland, officials from which are anxious to talk to Bigstone.

“We are aware of this incident and we definitely have in interest in it,” said Pivot lawyer Doug King.

Pivot is a legal advocacy organization that represents and defends the marginalized and disenfranchised.

The group assists by helping access all the documents that a client has the right to, then analyzing them to see if they have a legal case or not, King said.

A smoldering cigarette is thought to be the cause of a fire at a Melrose Street complex on Monday afternoon. One person was found dead inside and seven other residents were displaced.

A smoldering cigarette likely caused the fire that ripped through a four-plex and claiming the life of a female resident on Monday, Port Alberni Fire Chief

Tim Pley said.“The physical

evidence at the fire suggests that the fire was accidental,” Pley said. “It’s highly likely that it was started by a cigarette.”

No cigarette was found at the scene. “But everything is consistent with

a fire started by a cigarette,” Pley said.

The RCMP investigation into the fire is still ongoing.

The BC Coroner’s Service removed the body from the residence on Tuesday. Officials won’t release the identity of the victim yet pending notification of next of kin, spokesperson Barb McLintock said.

Crews from three departments responded to the rental unit on Third Avenue and Melrose

Firefighters found the lower suite already consumed with smoke and

flames and was emitting extreme heat, Pley said.

Crews battled the blaze for two hours.

Pley confirmed that one person was found dead in the lower suite, but he could not confirm if the person was male or female, he said. Area residents say it was a female in her 60’s.

Three other suites in the building suffered smoke and fire damage. Seven other residents were displaced and have since been helped by Victims Services.

V ICTORIA – The B.C. Liberal Party deserves credit for

releasing its policy book in full on the eve of the formal election campaign.

That’s about the only positive thing to be said about it.

For those who take the time to read party leader Christy Clark’s 40-page booklet, there are a few nuggets of news.

For instance, a re-elected B.C. Liberal government would continue its justice reform agenda by moving traffic ticket disputes out of courtrooms, as they did with impaired driving cases.

Most of it consists of glowing descriptions of the government’s 12-year record, and attacks on the NDP of the kind that are not normally seen in a platform.

This is consistent with Clark’s style since she was anointed party leader two

years ago.The main focus, as

revealed in February’s throne speech, is a plan to pay off B.C.’s growing debt and perhaps even get rid of the provincial sales tax with an Alberta-style “prosperity fund” from liquefied natural gas exports.

Whether this is from imposing a new export tax on LNG or simply from a windfall of gas royalties is not clear. Clark and her energy minister contradicted each other on that when it was announced, and the platform doesn’t shed any new light.

All we have is a big logo on the side of Clark’s campagn bus declaring “DEBT FREE B.C.”

As I’ve written before, there is plenty of real evidence of a huge new LNG industry in the making.

As for paying off the $60 billion debt that the B.C. Liberals’ pre-election

budget predicts will keep growing, cartoonist Adrian Raeside summed it up best: LNG revenues are “Christy Clark’s invisible friend.”

Clark finished up last week with stops in Terrace and Prince Rupert, promising an LNG windfall for local governments as well.

She repeated the platform’s attack line that the NDP are going to wreck the trillion-dollar LNG boom with a

Quebec-style moratorium on “fracking” to extract gas from deep shale formations.

That’s not an outright lie, but it’s almost as speculative as Clark’s notions of a 30-year windfall that could at best barely start during the next four-year term.

The NDP are not calling for a moratorium on natural gas production. They’re calling for yet another “review,” one of many vague, wobbly

positions that have been adopted by both dominant parties.

An earlier premier named Glen Clark became famous for “freezing” things like ferry fares and car insurance rates.

Now Christy Clark is “freezing” personal income tax rates for five years, and carbon tax rates too. That implies she’s planning to win this election and the next one, at a time when it is unclear whether she can even hold her own seat in Vancouver-Point Grey.

The B.C. Liberals will cut small business taxes by a point, some time in the next five years.

They will also increase income tax on large businesses and personal income of more than $150,000, but that’s not mentioned in their platform, since it goes against 12 years of their policy as a government.

BC Liberals are running scaredSavvy voters will determine election

The 2013 provincial election will be one of the most important in a generation.

At a time when the economy appears to be in slow motion, yet demands on the public purse are increasing, voters need to pay attention to who’s running.

Of course, that’s said in every election – to no avail.

Last time around, in the 2009 provincial election, only about 50 per cent of voters bothered to cast a vote.

Who is to blame and will things be any different this year?

It’s hard to say. Is it negative advertising that turns people

off? Some politicians say so and promise a more positive campaign.

Will that end indifference or will people turn away from boredom?

Is it helplessness and apathy that keep people away from the polls?

Many people simply don’t connect with government.

Why?Perhaps B.C. voters simply distrust anything

politicians say.Clearly there is a disconnect and the media

may have contributed to this malaise by blowing every little incident out of proportion.

As in the story of the boy who cried wolf, many voters simply tune out after a while, yet, sadly, when there is a real issue many eligible voters simply don’t see the connection between their vote and government policy.

Instead, they leave the field to special interest groups – business, unions, lobbyists – to hijack the results.

The truth is that politicians will only be accountable if held accountable.

The public has a right to toss any of them out if they don’t do what they promised, so voters need to pay attention to what politicians say and they need to find out who they are.

Over the next few weeks, the newspaper will be covering the region’s ridings with information from local candidates.

A young Christian man was planning to go for the summer to work at a logging camp in Northern B.C. His friends wondered how he would make out there because it was known as a particularly rough camp. After the summer was over and he got home, they asked him how diffi cult it was. He said it was no problem, they never found out that he was a Christian. It seems that people who don’t believe in God are usually very open about their beliefs or lack of them, while Christians often are so shy to speak about their faith. I like what one Christian writer said. She suggested that we should be able to speak about Christ and our trust in Him as as freely as we talk about sports, our gardens, or the weather.

city council meetings have been irritating.

As I approach the podium, I am rudely interrupted.

Case in point, when I dangled a piece of shredded tire in front of Catalyst’s CEO, Kevin Clarke. I questioned his claim of being a “good corporate citizen” while burning tire derived fuel in this valley.

In a democracy, dissidence must not only be allowed, it must be welcomed.

Mayor and councillors, have respect for the lady who balances the scales of justice and freedom.

Trophy hunting not honourable

To the Editor,I hope our

Valley’s logo with symbolic images of bears represents a continued step in the right direction for increased tourism, and doesn’t foreshadow attracting travellers who participate in trophy hunting bears, per Liberal MLA

Candidate Darren Deluca’s election profile.

He’s been a guide outfitter on Vancouver Island for 18 years and his apparent satiation for slaughtering innocent animals in the wild is disgraceful.

Trophy hunting is the same as shooting fish in a barrel. This is not the same philosophy honourable sustenance hunters can relate to whose truth is, eat what you kill.

“Sport” hunting is a violent form of recreation that has left countless animals maimed, and orphaned animals vulnerable to starvation, exposure, and predation.

It may explain all the orphaned baby bear cubs found suffering, struggling to hang onto life, who are rescued and cared for at the North Island Wildlife recovery centre each year.

Reading Deluca’s profile frustrated and angered me that someone with such malevolent behaviour and regressive mentality is running for a leadership position.

It’s hard enough for these wild

animals, struggling to survive in habitats annihilated by private logging companies that were once managed with Crown Forestry Practises, before TFL44 was given away by Minister of Forests Michael de Jong with the stroke of a pen to private corporations.

Lest we forget the Liberal government is responsible for the loss of mill jobs, allowing the wood to be exported as raw logs rather than lumber.

Deluca’s platform to rectify forestry jobs is to cut more old growth forests, what little remains, for what appears to be his own self-fulfilling gain to create conditions for his blood-sport.

Dix at BC’s wheel is a deal

a sprawling service-based business with an enormous budget and a huge number of employees.

Mister Dix lacks business-based managerial skills and could inadvertently make some terrible mistakes. Hopefully Mister Dix knows his own limitations

and will not allow the NDP’s socialistic exuberance to contort into know-it-all stupidity.

As someone once commented, the government cannot give anything to anybody that it doesn’t first take from somebody else.

If Adrian Dix does become the premier, and then drives our province even further into the ditch of fiscal mismanagement, middle-of-the-road British Columbians will not allow a leader of the NDP to sit in the driver’s seat of this province for a long long time.

In spite of misgivings about Adrian “Left Wheeler” Dix, I would rather have him at the wheel for the next four years than Christy ‘Fender Bender’ Clark.

Clark all about the photo-op

the Premier, on the strength of a mere 29,000 BC Liberal Party card-carrying members voting on the third electronic ballot, Christy Clark has been justifiably ridiculed as Premier

Photo-Op. Her leadership

style has always been linked to vainly smiling at the ever-present cameras at every opportunity.

Her self-professed leadership skills were never apparent, stumbling from one crisis to the next in a shambolic display of being pathetically shallow and ill-prepared; even former supporters couldn’t wait for the election to put her out of her misery, as she floundered and flopped around like a fish out of water.

Yet, with her poll numbers headed south faster than fragile monarch butterflies at the end of summer; her handlers repeatedly told the media that they were not unduly worried.

Unbelievably, in the first week since the writ was dropped, those handlers have turned Premier Photo-op into an even more risible and ludicrous figure.

Will she be able to claim that her party garnered more votes than her opponents, or will she just fade away to allow us plebeians to regain a little sanity ??

Wells spent a year and a half with the Millar farm before returning to B.C.

In addition to co-owning two horses with the Millars, Wells has maintained a working relationship with the family and returned to Ontario in September to present photos of West Brook Equestrian Centre, which opened last summer.

“They were open to that and blown away with what we’ve done so far and he was very impressed so I was pleased, and I went and rode some of the babies I had started.”

Wells hopes to one day host an Ian Millar clinic on Vancouver Island, at Arbutus Meadows in Nanoose or at West Brooke Equestrian Centre.

“It would be cool,” she said. “He’s so good with the public.”

Compromise on street name change

A request to rename a portion of Victoria Quay to Veteran’s Way has been curbed with a compromise to place a Legion/Veterans sign on top of the current street sign.

According to a planning department report, the proposed change would directly impact four properties, including the Royal Canadian Legion Alberni Valley Branch 293.

The city has received written concerns from one elderly property owner who has lived on the site for 45 years and would experience stress and financial hardship from the expense of changing one’s mailing address.

“The recommendation is a middle course that allows the property owner who is concerned and stressful about having his address changed

to keep his address, but it also allows a sign to be put in place that allows a sign to be put in place that allows the Legion the recognition they’re looking for,” said City Manager Ken Watson.

Councillors Hira Chopra and Wendy Kerr suggested looking into the possibility of having the Legion consider paying some of the costs incurred by the property owners in regards to the street name change.

“I don’t have a problem either way but I think we should talk with them one more time before you pass this motion,” Chopra said.

Solda said the compromise was a great way to mitigate the concerns.

“I’m not going to be responsible for someone’s health regarding the sign,” she said.

The city plans to work with the Legion on signs appearance.

Taking pics is kid stuff

Four months cancer-free. YES. I now get

to go for cancer check ups every six months instead of every three months. As they say “ Old age is not for sissies”.

Easter Sunday dawned with a glorious sun and a definite promise of summer. Our morning was spent running around the back yard choosing places that were not too sunny to hide chocolate Easter eggs.

Around noon our three visitors arrived Mom with two children, Benjamin was one and a half years, and Audrey Rose was 4 years old.

Audrey Rose was very shy as four-year-olds tend to be while holding on to her Mother’s leg and Benjamin just had a stunned look on his face.

Evidently they had snoozed in the car on the voyage from Nanaimo to Port Alberni and had just woken up.

Of course my trusty Nikon and I were snapping away, shy or no shy as they walked down our front path.

Because they were in the shade of our cedar trees I was shooting ISO 800, R A W format, 18~70mm lens set at 70mm, f10 aperture, 1/160 shutter speed. Crouching down to shoot at their level while using the 70mm to bring them closer without being on top of them is one way to

shoot young children. 1/160 of a second was fast enough should either child decide to make a run for it.

We all went through the house and went directly to the back yard for the Easter egg hunt. It was now high noon (although without Gary Cooper) and the sun was casting heavy shadows under their eyes, under their noses and under their chins on those lovely faces.

Lesley explained the rules of the Easter egg hunt, simply find the eggs before the chocolate melts. Audrey Rose found her first egg and her little face lit up with big smiles all traces of shyness gone.

We are all aware of the rule “Don’t shoot between 10:00am and 3:00pm” because of

the dark shadows and harsh sunrays.

To counter the bright sun and harsh shadows, I crouched down, used fill-flash and shot at ISO 400, RAW format, f14 aperture, 1/250 shutter speed.

Before you shoot fill-flash make sure that you are aware of the flash sync speed of your camera so that you can set you shutter speed accordingly.

The fill-flash got rid of the heavy face shadows while balancing the sun exposure so that the photograph was not over-exposed.

The trick of shooting children is to be part of the scenery, let them do their thing and be ready for those candid shots by being where they are going.

When the eggs were

all collected they drew on the patio concrete with huge sidewalk chalk , played fetch ball with Bella the dog until they got bored and then went inside to watch TV.

I set my camera to ISO 400, RAW, f4.5 aperture, 1/60 shutter speed and used fill-flash once more.

I wanted the room to be bright as well as the children.

City ponders public/private energy plan funding models

To partner or not to partner – that

will be the question when the City of Port Alberni receives word on several grant applications made to get the proposed District Energy Project flowing.

The project consists of a centrally located fiber based biomass system that would provide, in the first phase, heat and hot water to up to 12 buildings through approximately three kilometres of underground, insulated pipes.

The system has a 50-year shelf life and is fueled by fiber biomass, which includes wood waste in the form of construction demolition waste, and scotch broom.

In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and diverting wood waste from the landfill (which is then chipped instead of burned), the project would provide about

$265,000 per year in non-tax revenue for the city.

To offset the project’s near $10-million cost, the city has applied for $1.5 million from the Gas Tax Innovation Fund, and $800,000 from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Green Municipal Fund (GMF).

During Monday night’s council meeting, consultant Stephen Salter provided an overview and update on the project. A decision on the funding applications is expected by July.

Other proposed funding sources for the energy project are loans; $4 million GMF loan and $1 million Municipal Finance Authority loan and just under $250,000 in city in-kind contributions.

Private investment makes up the remaining $2.4 million in proposed

funding, although council could decide to borrow the money instead, pending on the outcome of the grants.

“The biggest drawback for having partners would be that the revenues would not come to the city in the same way, we couldn’t expect

to have the same return,” Salter said. “We would also have less control over the use of the

system.”Other disadvantages

include losing the ability to claim all of the carbon tax and greenhouse gas reductions.

Salter added that the advantages include private sector expertise and a lower debt load.

So far, the district energy project has received enthusiasm from potential clients, such as the Multiplex, Echo Village, Echo Pool, Pioneer Towers and West Coast

General Hospital.“We’ve had written

expressions of interest and support,” Deakin said. “Enough that we felt confident in making the funding application.”

In response to a question from councilor Wendy Kerr on cost comparison, Salter said energy clients could expect to save in two ways.

“The first is that they would see a discount in the total cost of about 20 per cent, but the other thing is that typically district energy is sold over long term contract. Because the system is going to operate for a long time, and we have a pretty good idea of what it’s going to cost, they would be signing a contract to take energy with inflation at the rate of inflation... so they get price certainty.”

Pat Deakin, economic development manager said the department will continue to look into further grant sources as they come available.

The Fine sisters gave a fine performance

on their opening night at Capitol Theatre Friday night.

Melanie Anderson, Teresa Drew and Debra Hamilton are aptly cast as the three sisters reunited by their father’s death in The Attic, The Pearls and Three Fine Girls, the latest Portal Players production.

This talented trio of women had the audience laughing out loud at their antics as they revisit childhood

rivalries that have survived to adulthood.

Anderson, playing the youngest sister Jelly Fine, may be the most “fine” of all the sisters, having cared for her ailing father and practically setting about fulfilling his wish for a big party.

Drew is middle sister Jojo, the consummate business woman who is hiding behind her Blackberry and has a secret that really isn’t a secret to her sisters.

Jayne Fine, played by Hamilton, is the older sister, an academic who has man troubles.

The three women carry the whole show themselves without an intermission, even changing the sets while staying in character.

And while there were some opening night jitters Friday night, the flow of the story never faltered and the comedic punch lines as well as the poignant moments were carried off convincingly.

The play cleverly creates characters that never appear on stage but who have convincing off stage interaction with the Fine girls.

Of course those who really are behind the scenes must be credited with bringing this charming play to the Alberni Valley.

Derek and Deb Burke are experienced directors and producers and it shows in the quality of the production of the piece.

Backed up by a crew of Portal Players regulars, The Attic, The Pearls and Three Fine Girls is well presented.

Running for three more weekends, this production is a must see of the season for Portal Players.

November 14, 1921 ~ April 16, 2013Pam passed away, at peace, on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at the age of 91. She was witty and happy up to her last days and shared a tender moment with her husband of 69 years, Bill, only hours before she left this world for, hopefully, a new ad-venture as she waits for Dad to join her.Mom is survived by her loving and caring husband, Bill; her son, Alan (Dorothy); and daughter, Linda (Paul) along with grandchil-dren: Todd, (Carolyn), Deanna (Steve), and Paul Jr.; as well as great grandchildren: Dar-cie, Allison, Scott, Miranda, Brett, Paul, Ryan; step great granddaughter, Laina (Dave), great, great grandson, Benjamin; and her sis-ter, Betty.Mom was born in Pewsy, Wiltshire England and lived in London during WW11 where she met Dad, a Canadian soldier from Port Alber-ni. They married December 25th, 1943. Mom left England with her 6 month old son Alan on May 6, 1945 aboard the MV Athlone Castle, en route to Halifax to begin a new life in a new country, arriving at Pier 21 only 3 days after the end of WW11 ( May 10, 1945 ). Mom and baby were put on a train in Halifax which would take them across Canada to Vancou-ver. Mom always said that by the time they reached Calgary she was convinced they had circled the earth and would soon be back in London. She quickly settled in Port Alberni with Dad’s family as she waited for her hus-band to return and begin their life together. Baby Linda arrived June 17, 1947.Mom & Dad left Port Alberni in 1956 and settled in Nanaimo, where they opened and operated “Pineo’s BA Service Station” along with Bob & Ev Pineo. In 1963 she and Dad set out on another adventure as they moved to Honolulu for the next 10 years, returning to live in Lantzville in 1974 where they resided until 2006. Mom loved her curling, lawn bowling and es-pecially her bridge games. The ladies in her bridge group were special friends and always there in her later years to offer support and encourage her to play. Thank you girls.We will all miss you dear Mother, but you will live forever in our memory and in our hearts.A graveside service will be held at Cedar Val-ley Memorial Gardens ( 2347 Cedar Rd ) on Saturday April 27th at 11:30 am followed by a gathering of family and friends at Costin Hall, also known as the Lantzville Hall at 1:00 p.m.

The Alberni Airborne Volleyball Club christened the new ADSS gym with its first ever volleyball tournament.

Last weekend, seven teams from around the Island vied for the Island Championship title. In the end, Nanaimo took first place with a hard fought win over Campbell River.

The Airborne didn’t win but fared well. They came within single digit points in every set, and in the end made for exciting volleyball matches for spectators. But they came out behind their opponents.

Setter Chelsey Charlesworth was magical with her agility and ability to put up sets to her team mates. Her teammates Carley Gitelman and Karissa

Pley didn’t hold back at the net, and showed skilled spiking and blocking. And Jaime Clarke displayed effortless digging, challenging the competition to put the ball in Alberni’s Court.

The new ADSS gym was a hit with spectators, who were from around the Island. They could not stop commenting on “the nicest gym we’ve ever

been in.” Visitors were appreciative, complimentary and sincerely happy for our community.

Hosting larger competitions may be in the works such as using the Athletic Hall as well for Provincial Championships.

The Airborne would like to thank Mike Roberts the ADSS Athletic co-ordinator, and Lyle Marsh for their support.

Season over for badminton club

The Alberni Valley Junior Badminton Club’s season is over.

The club had their season wind-up on Thursday, April 11 at the Alberni Athletic Hall. The evening is host to a pizza and potluck dinner,

awards ceremony and fun games.

The club has been growing over the years and has many talented athletes.

This seson, the Bill Ku award was presented to Robert Bota, a long time athlete who is graduating this year.

Other awards that

were presented this evening where for most improved and most skilled player in each age category.

The club could not happen without the dedication from the coaches, head coach Larry Spencer and coach Whitney McKenny, who was a member of the club

for years and who went to university on a full badminton scholarship; and coach Jennifer Norn, we are grateful for their commitment to the athletes.

The season will start back up at the end of September. Please watch for registration dates and times.

It’s a total of five and a half minutes- a short

and long performance. That is what you train for all year round.

It is what keeps Kennedy Lavertu motivated every day she is on the ice.

Figure skating is her sport of choice and like every sport, performance is the moment that brings together all the hard work and practice.

For the 14-year-old

Port Alberni Grade 9 student, this year has been a pivotal one in her skating career.

She joined the competitive ranks as a pre-novice skater last April.

Since then she has been steadily improving- facing frustration, disappointment, success, and joy.

Last November she entered her first sectional competition

( BC provincials for competitive skaters) held in Parksville.

She scored high and landed 15th (out of 56 skaters), which is not too shabby for a debut against a field of veterans and those that are “home schooled” to skate.

“That was the light that shined on her,” Karen Lavertu, Kennedy’s mom said.

Skating can be a lonely sport but, it can’t be done alone.

Kennedy has a great support team who train, guide, inspire, and challenge her to grow into the skater she wants to become.

“Everyone that contributes to Kennedy’s skating knows we are grateful,” Karen says.

Kennedy won regionals in February and came home with a second and third place from a competition in

Calgary. At the recent

Vancouver Island Skating International competition in Parksville she placed first after her short program, and she took a third place overall.

“I am proud of my accomplishments so far and know I have a long way to go,” Kennedy said.

She will continue to practice for skating perfection.

Low gross was a tie between Anna Marie Krikke and Janice Cross with an 87.

Low net also had a tie for 69 between, Carol Hastings, Anna Marie Krikke and Kathy White

In the ball sweep, we added up holes No.

10, 11, 12 and 13 from the first time around and holes No. 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18 from the second time around for the gross.

For the net we took half of our handicap off of the gross score. Anna Marie Krikke won the gross part of the ball sweep and Carol Hastings won the net side.

They both got to

pick a prize out of the gift box, which Patsy Gauthier did a very good job of putting together, thank you Patsy.

Next Tuesday will be the last week of drop in before draws will be made up.

We will play the red tees on Tuesday , it has been fun playing the yellow tees in April.

programs, electric-ity customers saved an estimated 32 mil-lion kilowatt hours of

electricity in 2012. � e PowerSense programs helps customers conserve energy and get the most out of their energy dollar by providing both � -nancial incentives and advice on en-ergy e� cient technologies and prac-tices. In 2012, FortisBC’s natural gas Ener-gy E� ciency and Conservation pro-grams helped residential, commercial and industrial customers save more

than 360,000 gigajoules of natural gas, enough energy to heat some 4,100 homes in one year. Renewable natural gas is a B.C.-made, carbon neutral energy source. � e methane gas used to produce renew-able natural gas comes from organic waste found at local land� lls and farms. Instead of escaping into the atmosphere as a harmful greenhouse gas, it’s captured, cleaned and added to our pipeline, giving our customers a renewable energy source.For about $5 more per month on their natural gas bill, customers can designate 10 per cent of their natu-ral gas use as renewable. We’ll then inject an equivalent amount into our system.To date, more than 60 businesses and close to 3,800 residential customers have signed up to be part of the re-newable natural gas program. Helping customers conserve energy is one of the most cost e� ective ways for us to meet future needs. And by making thoughtful energy choices — whether it’s switching to paper-less billing, installing energy e� cient lighting or upgrading to a high-e� -ciency natural gas furnace — you’re supporting the environment.

For inspiration and advice, we pres-ent three young B.C. eco-heroes whose community-based environ-mental actions have (or will poten-tially have) a global impact.Vancouver’s Claudia Li was inspired to start saving sharks after watching biologist and activist Rob Stewart’s documentary Sharkwater.“� at night I couldn’t sleep,” Li says. “� e documentary talks how important sharks are for our ocean ecosystem…and how some species are being pushed to the brink of extinction because they’re being over� shed to make shark � n soup.”Shark � n soup symbolizes face and respect at dinner banquets, mainly weddings, and is consumed in mainly middle- to higher-class Cantonese style dinners.Li had tasted shark � n soup mere weeks before at her cousin’s banquet and was deeply trouble when she realized that she, her family, and her community were unwittingly par-ticipating in this ecological disaster because they didn’t know any better.In response to this, Li began what would become Shark Truth, a grassroots not-for-pro� t aimed at promoting shark conservation by implementing a cultural perspective

shift. (For instance, Shark Truth runs a “Happy Hearts Love Sharks” wedding contest that rewards couples that go “Fin Free” at their dinner banquets with a chance to win a dream honeymoon.) “Start with what and who you know,” says Li. “� e place where we can make the most powerful impact is within a community we understand.”Shark Truth has raised public aware-ness and saved the lives of 2800 sharks so far.Kimberly Gulevich of Fort St. John is an active volunteer at Student Energy, a non-pro� t organization that is working towards a future

of sustainable energy. She came into the public eye as a high school student whose science project on methane capture entitled “Got Gas?” was awarded the 2010 Weston Youth Innovation Award. No small feat.“� ere are many ways to help the environment,” Gulevich says. “t… By starting with small actions yourself, and moving to educating others, a great impact can be had.”… Com-munity groups are a great spot to start – environmental and science and technology groups are good resources.” Gulevich also stresses the importance of networking and connecting with people you know
