Drag racers flock to Valley◆ COVER STORY

SUSAN QUINNALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The Valley Street Rods’ annual show and shine at Harbour Quay traditionally kicks off Thunder in the Valley. This year’s event is slated for Friday, Aug. 8, says spokesman Dave Russell.

Russell is one of about a dozen members that make up the Valley Street Rods. He will have his distinctive red 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu ragtop at the Harbour Quay show and shine. It is one of two classics Russell owns, the other being a Studebaker that he spent

10 years restoring. The show can accommodate

up to 200 vehicles, and about half of those that will show up will be from out of town, he said.

“The reason we do this is lots of drag racers show up on Thursday...they don’t have much to do. We did the car show so they would have something to do Friday night before the drag races.”

The event, which has been going on for 15 or so years, used to be held at Victoria Quay until it grew too large, and was moved to Harbour Quay. There is still room to expand into the train

station parking lot, Russell said.No pre-registration is

necessary for people wanting to enter their vehicles in the show. Registration is $15 per car, with proceeds going to the MS Society. Trophies will be handed out for a number of classes. Food, music and door prizes are also planned.

Admission is free for spectators.

Cars can start lining up at 4 p.m. and the show kicks off at 5 p.m. Russell expects it to wrap up at 8 p.m.

Valley Street Rods kick off weekend with show and shine

SUSAN QUINNALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The sound of engines roaring in the distance, and the sight of lights glowing from garage doors into the wee hours begin weeks before Thunder in the Valley in Port Alberni. Racers have been busy finetuning their cars in anticipation of the annual drag racing event, which takes place this Saturday, Aug. 9 and Sunday, Aug. 10 at the Alberni Valley Regional Airport.

A car show hosted by the Valley Street Rods on Friday night at Harbour Quay kicks off festivities.

“It’s going to be huge,” says Bill Surry, the man in charge of a large contingent of volunteers who manage to pull off this event every year. There are 270 cars registered in several different classes, and waiting lists were filling up

weeks ago.The two-day event—

celebrating 14 years in 2014—usually draws 2,000 spectators over the weekend, Surry said. Enviable numbers in the drag racing world.

“The amount of spectators we get here

is huge compared to anywhere else except international events,” he noted.

Surry anticipates there will be 50 cars from the area, with the rest coming from out of town. There are a number of specialty cars slated to

attend, including Brent Murray and his Damn Yankee funny car and Phil Ruskowski with his nitro burning top fuel dragster.

Greg Dolling of Port Alberni will be there with his 1993 Beretta, one of more than two dozen Canada West

Doorslammers expected to attend.

Dolling switched to the Doorslammers last year after racing a homebuilt Mustang in the pro class for a number of years. “It was a city car we made into a drag car,” he said.

“I’m hoping for high

sevens, to break the eight-second barrier,” he said. “It’s pretty much ready to roll.”

The lack of a pedestrian walkway makes Harbour Road an unsafe place for both tourists and residents, said Mike McDowall, summertime coordinator at the Maritime Discovery Centre.

“Quite often you’ll see large trucks going up and down here, probably 10 an hour,” he said. However there is no barrier to stop them from edging onto the walkway that exists there now, something that’s a safety hazard given the 5000-7000 tourists that come through there most summers, he said.

“You can almost see a semi-walkway... there’s a painted

line [between the walkway and road] but safety wise painted lines don’t do much,” McDowall said. “If they had something like [a curb] it could prevent a car coming

over or something, though ideally I think you’d still like a higher [barrier,] like a highway median ... between large industrial traffi c and people that walk there.”

The issue is complicated by the co-ownership of the road. It’s shared by the city, the port authority, Western Forest Products and Catalyst Paper.

In North America, many readers don’t know about the world of British ction. Well, today, I’ll be telling you about one lesser known series that is a must for everyone. Midnight for Charlie Bone by Jenny Nimmo is the rst book in the epic series spanning eight books. Set in an unknown city on the coast of England, Midnight for Charlie Bone

starts when our title hero, Charlie, realizes that something strange is happening to him. He can hear voices in pictures and see people moving in their frames. Is he going mad? When his Grandma Bone catches wind of Charlie’s predicament,

she sends him o to the forbidding Bloor’s Academy. There Charlie nds other children like him. The Endowed, as they are known, children with powers who are all descended from a mysterious sorcerer called the Red King. Some are friends . . . others are staunch enemies. And there might be more going on among the ranks of the Endowed than meets the eye. Lost children and missing fathers give Charlie more to worry about that just homework as he tries to survive the year. I rst became a fan of the world of Charlie Bone when I was about eight, and I am still a fan today. It is a series that is appropriate for any age group, be it seven to a hundred. Why, just the other day I saw a friend’s mom reading Midnight for Charlie Bone and loving it! Prepare to be hooked on a series lled with magic, mystery, and fun. In the life of Charlie Bone, there is never a dull moment.

KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Just a little over a year since it was first spotted on B.C.’s coast, starfish wasting disease has come to Barkley Sound.

“We’ve been keeping a close eye on it because we’d been expecting it to come here at some point [though] hoping it wouldn’t,” said Peter Mieras of Rendezvous Dive Adventures.

Mieras, who runs Rendezvous Dive Adventures in Rainy Bay, located near the mouth of the Alberni Inlet, followed news of starfish wasting disease when it popped up in Howe Sound, Puget Sound and on the eastern side of Vancouver

Island a little over a year ago.

The disease manifests itself in lesions on the body of the starfish and leads to a deflated appearance and arms falling off. As of yet, no cause has been determined.

“If I knew the [cause] I’d be rich. Cornell University has been looking at what it is,” said Mieras. “As far as my latest information, they have narrowed it down to a bacteria or a virus.”

Starfish wasting disease mainly affects sunflower starfish, morning sun starfish and ochre starfish, all of which can be found in Barkley Sound.

While there is a risk that the disease could seriously decimate

or even wipe out the starfish population in Barkley Sound completely, Mieras is hopeful that the less concentrated population in the sound means that won’t happen here.

“In Howe Sound, where the initial outbreaks seem to have taken place, there seems to be a very high concentration of these stars; [you might see] hundreds and hundreds of starfish on a regular dive. Here you might see 50-60 starfish.”

“Those large concentrations make it way more prone to spreading than in a place where the population density is lower.”

If the disease does

spread, it could have serious repercussions for the rest of the Barkley Sound

ecosystem.“Starfish are natural

predators to sea urchins [who feed on

kelp] and if they don’t keep the sea urchin population in check, that would negatively

impact the kelp fields,” said Mieras.

“Kelp fields are important sanctuaries for a lot of fish, so of course there is a domino affect. I don’t know any kind of animal that if it’s taken out in large numbers would not have a domino affect on the ecosystem.”

“If you look at Howe Sound, the sea urchins there have ben taking over quite aggressively.”

There’s also a concern that the starfish are spreading the disease between species of starfish.

“Sea stars like the morning sun star feed on the sunflower starfish and that affects them because they’re the same family and they get the disease as well and die out as a consequence of that.”[email protected]

ALBERNI CHAMBER UPDATEHave you stopped by the Sunset Market yet this summer?

If not, you are missing out on one the summer’s most successful events! Every Wednesday evening at Victoria Quay, locals and visitors are enjoying a festival atmosphere along with some great shopping. Music sets the mood, with local performers playing to the crowds as they shop, eat or just relax in the shadow of the welcome poles.

In the parking lot, Lime-In food truck provides a taste of

the Carribean to those who come in time for dinner.

And then there is the shopping! Every vendor has unique and fascinating items on offer. Pottery, clothing, jewelry, art, candy, trinkets, toys, coffee, home baking and handicrafts for every taste and budget. The Sunset Market is a joint endeavour by the Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Hupacasth First Nation and is being organized by Jolleen Dick. A visitor from Australia shops for a new bag at

the Sunset Market in July.

The first Sunset Market was held last year for three Wednesdays and the success of that project inspired a full summer of markets for this year.

The Sunset Market takes place very Wednesday evening until the end of August, starting at 6 p.m. The market closes at 9 p.m. August 13 and at 8:30 p.m. August 20 and 27.

From / A4According to David

McCormick, Director of Public Relations and Business Development at the port authority, “the port is certainly aware of the safety concerns that do exist with the heavy use of Harbour Road by industrial traffi c. The port does work with the other partners to ensure that the road is used safely by everybody, whether it’s industrial traffi c, residential or community citizen vehicles or

pedestrians.”To that effect, the

port authority has collaborated with the city to have temporary signage installed that restricts parking along Harbour Road, especially for vehicles that have boat trailers.

However, Coun. Jack McLeman admitted that there currently aren’t any plans to make that stretch of Harbour Road any safer.

He does want to see if it’s possible to add signs that would direct pedestrians

from where the new steps down to the beach were installed along Harbour Road near the old Esso property to the Maritime Museum along the Harbour Quay Marina.

“What we’re going to have to do is fi gure out what’s possible and bring it up at the next budget,” McLeman said.

According to Scott Kenny, Director of Parks and Recreation and Heritage, the fence around the Esso property can’t yet be

removed. McLeman would like to see pylons put up along the walkway.

McDowall appreciates the attempts made thus far but wants the partners to work together to fi gure out a solution for next summer.

“There’s a big push for opening up the waterfront, especially from city council... and a safer walkway [would make it] more of a natural attraction. Now, it’s just not the safest it could be.”[email protected]

The cost of a proposed 10th Avenue Roger Creek Crossing has gone up to $14.6 million, city engineer Guy Cicon told city council on Monday while presenting the Active Transportation Plan. The idea for the bridge has been raised before but the terms of the last referendum fell through.

Earlier this year council considered adding a non-binding public opinion question on the 2014 municipal election regarding the crossing. The issue was tabled so staff could come up with information on if the question should be binding.

“The basis of the death of the last referendum [was] that it was passed based on a half payment by the city and the other half paid for by the Ministry of Transportation,” city manager Ken Watson said.

That’s what the public voted for the

last time, but the ministry was unable to commit to those funds, he added.

“As far as I’m aware, the Ministry of Transportation didn’t give us any signals that they would be interested in cost sharing [this time,]” Watson said.

The new referendum question council considered on July 28 was: “Do you support a 10th Avenue bridge crossing over Roger Creek with funding of $14.6 million from borrowing resulting in tax increases to the average homeowner of approximately $160 per year for 25 years. Yes/No.”

However, Councillors Chopra, Cole and MacLeman were opposed to yet another non-binding referendum.

“We voted ‘yes’ on [a non-binding referendum question] to get the 10th Avenue Crossing twice in my lifetime here in Port Alberni and we still didn’t get it,” said

McLeman.Chopra raised the

question of making the referendum binding during the current meeting but the Watson said this was impossible now.

“I would recommend that if council wants to make the referendum question binding then refer it back to staff, because we would need to have the borrowing approval in place before that binding referendum question is asked.”

V ICTORIA – The B.C. government’s move to ease liquor

restrictions is undergoing its hot summer test, and music festivals are only part of it.

Premier Christy Clark’s government loves its populist gestures, and as with increasing rural highway speed limits, the negative effects have yet to be quantified.

Free-range drinking, or removing fences from festival beer gardens, is one of the moves that will be undergoing a post-mortem as communities clean up after their big summer parties.

One of the biggest, the Squamish Valley Music Festival with headline acts Arcade Fire, Bruno Mars and Eminem, is still to come, Aug. 8 to 10. Country fans gathered over the long weekend for Sunfest in the Cowichan Valley, with the Rockin’

River Musicfest in Mission coming up next.

(Another big bash next weekend is Shambhala, the popular electronic music event on a farm near Nelson, but alcohol is officially banned there and their big issue is controlling the effects of “ecstasy” and other rave drugs.)

Early reviews of free-range festivals have been positive. Victoria’s Rock the Shores event went smoothly without a fenced-in area for alcohol sales. Festival organizers did create a fenced “dry” area, but I’m told hardly anyone used it.

Penticton has had its share of experience with summer bashes gone bad. For B.C. Day it inherited the Boonstock Music and Arts festival, sent packing from a small community in Alberta after complaints of rowdy crowds and crime, so Penticton officials were understandably cautious.

Boonstock organizers were refused a provincial

liquor licence after struggling to arrange security and emergency services. The festival licence process is likely getting renewed attention these days.

After attending the recent Calgary Folk Festival, where the beer garden was securely fenced and the capacity

monitored, I’m wondering what is really achieved by these measures. Litter and empties were contained, but since

under-aged festival visitors are allowed into the serving area, it’s not clear to me whether the fence was ever worth the effort.

It’s unlikely that there will be riots at farm markets as a result of allowing sales of locally made beer, wine and spirits, or from relaxing rules for operation of winery tasting rooms. But there are more reforms to come.

New regulations are

on the way for the Agricultural Land Reserve. As it stands, farms are allowed to have a winery or cidery, but not a brewery or distillery.

Expect that to be changed as B.C. and other provinces strive to develop their craft beer and spirits industry, trying to emulate the tourism benefits that have come from an expanding wine industry.

One area where the B.C. government has screwed up is its minimum pricing rules, introduced along with the overdue move to allow “happy hour” discounts in pubs.

The minimum price of 25 cents an ounce for beer, 60 cents an ounce for wine and $3 an ounce for hard liquor was an effort to balance business-friendly policy with legitimate public health concern about over-consumption of said products.

But the minimum beer price prompted protests from a few watering holes that had been selling pints or jugs of beer for slightly less.

EDITORIAL

This court’s public opinion

It appears that Prime Minister Stephen Harper intends to avoid testifying in the trial of suspended-senator Mike Duffy, now facing 31 criminal charges connected with his disputed expense claims.

While legal experts claim it’s entirely likely that Harper will be called to testify by Duffy’s defense in response to bribery charges, a spokesman has made it clear this week that

Harper feels he has no further information to add to what he has already supplied to the RCMP.

This is yet another instance of Harper’s increasing disconnect with the electorate. Whatever reasons he offers, it is obvious that the desire to avoid anything that might

prove embarrassing – standard equipment for politicians – has yet again trumped any attempt at transparency or respect for due process.

We’ll leave it to the courts to rule whether Harper can invoke parliamentary privilege to avoid testifying, but he’s not likely to score any points with the ordinary citizen by doing so.

Any judge in this land would tell us it’s not our place to conclude whether our testimony would or wouldn’t be useful.

But then we’re not the prime minister – and not able to avail ourselves of his privileges, parliamentary or otherwise.

Harper has persistently sought to distance himself from the actions of the Prime Minister’s Office on the Duffy file – a situation that would be laughable if it did not reveal how tragically flawed our political system is.

Whatever our presumptions with regard to Duffy, the accused deserves his day in court. And Canadians deserve the kind of leader who is willing to endure some personal discomfiture to testify, openly and honestly, in a court of law.

Anything short of that is an insult – to our people, to our principles, and, ultimately, to our country.

Welcome! Jesus says: “Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.” How much easier can a religion be… to welcome, and be welcomed. Mailbag: Feedback

To the Editor,Re: Creekers can kiss

boil water advisories goodbye, July 17.

We can all kiss clean water goodbye if the clearcut logging on steep slopes in our watershed continues as is happening right now.

It appears that all levels of government have left it up to Port Alberni citizens to pay for damage being done to our China Creek watershed, the source of our drinking water. Beaver Creek residents will well remember what happened to their water following the Beaufort slide in 2006.

Right now, there is logging on steep slopes in our China Creek watershed. Before Island Timberlands became the owner of our watershed, former owners MacMillan-Bloedel and Weyerhaeuser made an agreement to protect this fragile region from logging. Furthermore, the environment

ministry had formally designated our watershed an Ungulate Winter Range (UWR) in order to protect Roosevelt Elk and deer populations.

While Island Timberlands cuts the heart out of McLaughlin Ridge right above our watershed, I ask, why is no one taking a

stand to protect our drinking water?

The late Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District director Glenn Wong attempted to convince Island Timberlands to make a land swap and he lobbied the provincial government to buy our watershed back from Island Timberlands. His efforts were to no

avail.It is now up to

citizens of Port Alberni to take this urgent matter into our own hands. Otherwise, we will be paying for expensive water treatment or worse yet, for water supplied by a private corporation at exorbitant prices.

At the very least, our city council could take

the watershed issue to the Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM)to demand protection for Port Alberni’s watershed. Vancouver and Victoria have protected watersheds,so why not us?

I urge readers to please write and phone city council to stop the logging on McLaughlin Ridge. As well, contact: Steve Thomson FLNR ([email protected]), P.O. Box 9049, Stn. Provincial Government, Victoria, B.C. V8W 9E2, phone 250-387-6240.

From / A8Some media made

a big deal of this, and the government over-reacted to this tempest in a beer stein with an ill-thought-out cut in the minimum price to 20 cents an ounce – for beer in jugs only.

The pub industry was not impressed with this bit of

knee-jerk populism. Encouraging beer jug sales makes it difficult to see if someone at a table of revelers is being over-served, drinking most of the jug himself.

Rally for water To the Editor,Water. Clean water. What would our

lives be like without water?

Our California neighbour to the south is in the midst of a serious drought and facing the reality of life with limited water. Could it happen to us? Yes. In fact, not far from home, the Beaver Creek community faced a serious “water contamination” problem for many years due to steep slope logging.

Our China Creek Watershed needs

protection and a strong message needs to be sent to local officials to stop the logging in our watershed.

A rally has been planned for Thursday, Aug. 7 in front of Port Alberni City Hall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Speakers from organizations such as the Watershed Alliance are expected to attend.

We urge citizens to fight to keep water in the public domain, like Vancouver and Victoria watersheds.

An Escalade worth the waitCadillac recently held the introduction of its all-new Escalade in the heart of Toronto, specifically the heart of Yorkville. This upscale slice of Toronto real estate is home to spendy shops, exclusive restaurants and luxurious ho-tels. This is a place to be seen or be seen in a vehicle that projects the image one wants to portray. Media guests for the Escalade launch stayed at To-ronto’s very first boutique hotel, The Hazelton. As one Torontonian put it, “that’s about the fanciest place in town.” It certainly draws an upscale crowd of rich people, or posers, looking the part. With a steady lineup of Ferrari, McLaren and other exotics parked outside, Cadillac was front and centre showing off its new full-size luxury SUV to a young, well-healed crowd of Toronto socialites and business people.

LooksGetting a full-size truck into a boutique hotel is like trying to park in one of those parking spots labelled “small car”. To get around this, the party part of the launch was held on a garage rooftop, transformed into a nightclub, complete with gourmet finger food, fancy

cocktails and live performers, including the requisite fire-twirling entertainers. There was even an Escalade-inspired golf cart to shuttle guests to the roof. The star of the show was the all-new 2015 Escalade, a vehicle Cadillac hopes will make up about 20 per cent of its overall sales. With a $6,000 price drop and very competitive packages, they hope even wealthy shoppers will stop to see the value in this SUV. It sure got attention, thanks to the fabulous LED projector headlamps and taillights. The angular shape is very contemporary and the sleeker sheet metal looks up to date.InsideThe Escalade has always made an impact when it arrives at any destination; the sheer size and attitude it projects says a lot about the person driving it. It is inside that needed to be refreshed the most, and the attention to detail Cadillac infused in its new truck should pay dividends. Any luxury buyer expects leather, wood, and smart infotainment and Cadillac delivers on all of these. The dash and doors are cov-ered with hand cut leather. The open-grain wood and contrasting interior materials like faux suede all make it look as rich as the buyer expects. Front and centre is Cadillac’s CUE entertainment system that I find easy to operate and interact with. The buttons below it are touch sensitive, there are no knobs or switches. The front passengers just swipe over the surface to change the volume and heat controls. DriveOne reason to buy a big truck-based SUV is to move people in numbers or tow a trailer to a cabin or cottage. That latter experience came with the drive portion of the Escalade launch, driving north of Toron-to to The Briars, a 100-hectare resort on the edge of Lake Simcoe. This family run complex includes a huge stretch of lake frontage, golf course, pools, tennis and activities for all ages and the Escalade fits right in. For moving a large family around in comfort, the

Escalade is wonderful as there is plenty of room to stretch out when the long wheelbase (ESV) model is chosen. Granted about 70 per cent of all buyers choose the shorter wheelbase as it looks less imposing and some might not need the interior vastness. Under the hood is GM’s premium 6.2L V8 with a whopping 420hp and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. This might seem like overkill but this larger engine can switch off to just four cylinders under light load, more often impacting fuel economy. The power goes to just the rear wheels, all four wheels or automatically controlled, all by a switch on the dash. My experi-ence driving for the day returned about

12L/100km in mostly highway driving. Not bad for a big truck.

VerdictThe new Escalade adds about $10,000 worth of new equipment like standard magnetic ride control for a more nimble ride. The cabin is much quieter, for doing big business deals on the phone, and the ride overall is much more refined than before. Starting at $79,900 the Escalade is for the well healed, but Cadillac representatives told me that most buyers shoot for the moon and buy the top Premium model for $90,500. The new Cadillac is fresh and much more refined, with features like never before. Do young wealthy buyers like the Cadillac brand and where it is going? The short answer is yes. GM claims this is the fastest growing luxury brand in Canada and B.C. is a hot spot for the Escalade. It has been seven years since we’ve had an all-new Escalade… the wait was worth it.

KidneyWalk comes to AlberniKATYA SLEPIAN

ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The third Annual KidneyWalk BC is coming to Port Alberni on Aug. 10 and organizers are bringing the muscle. The event, which seeks to raise awareness and funding for kidney disease sufferers in B.C., will feature former professional boxer Gordy Racette.

The heavyweight boxing champion first got involved in the cause after hearing from a friend who was on dialysis due to kidney disease. When the friend couldn’t answer Racette’s questions about kidney transplants, he went to the B.C. Kidney Foundation.

When he discovered more than 90 per cent of people in B.C. believe in organ donation but only 19 per cent are registered, he decided he had to get involved. In addition to participating in the Port Alberni Kidney Walk, Racette is also looking to raise awareness through his boxing career.

The 62-year-old boxing champion has been in the ring since 1979 and wants to

fight in one more final decade.

“One of the things I’m trying to do is get another fight, which

will mark five different decades I’ve fought in. I’ll be the third person in history and hopefully that’ll give me a pedestal to talk about organ donation.”

Al Jewall, Port

Alberni KidneyWalk Coordinator is thankful for Racette’s efforts.

“I need a guy like that to help promote the event,” said Jewall. In addition to the walk, Jewall has set up registration boxes in stores all over town where residents can register both for the KidneyWalk and to become organ donors.

With 500 people in B.C. waiting for organ transplants and more than 75 per cent of those needing kidneys, he’s hoping to get a lot of registrants. Organ donation is no longer handled with driver’s licence stickers, applying to become an organ donor can now be done online

at the B.C. Transplant website.

“It takes less than five minutes to register online,” says Racette, “people just need set aside the time to do it.”

The 2014 Port Alberni KidneyWalk will be held on Sunday, Aug. 10 at Blair Park on Margaret Street. To register or apply to become an organ donor, either fill out the forms located at major retailers in town or visit their website at www.portalbernikidneywa [email protected]

HEALTHY LIVINGActiveHealth tip: These plant foods contain a multitude of nutrients and more protein than

any other vegetable group.

pma

Beans, beans, they’re good for your...heart?

What is a reasonably priced,

versatile, nutritional powerhouse food item? The answer is the mighty bean—otherwise known as legumes, peas or pulses.

Legumes have edible seeds within a pod that open lengthwise. They separate into shell and seed. Beans, such as chick peas,

black eyed peas, pinto, navy, romano, kidney, lima, soy, peas, lentils and peanuts are all considered legumes.

These plant foods contain a multitude of nutrients and more protein than any other vegetable group. Plus, their low fat nature and high content of fibre offers some beneficial effects on blood sugars and cholesterol.

In general, many people could benefit from increasing the level of fibre in their

diet. Eating leg-umes more often will help boost total fibre. Legumes have a high content of soluble fibre. When water is added to a plant food, the soluble fibre thickens and becomes sticky, gummy and gel-like. Soluble fibre helps to slow the digestion of food.

This action can be a helpful

way to manage

blood sugar

levels which is good

for people

with diabetes.

Also, the soluble fibre in legumes can help to lower blood cholesterol levels and can be a great dietary tool to assist people with high cholesterol.

For these reasons, legumes are an excellent addition to the diet for people with diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and bowel issues.

Beans are known for their gassy effects on bowels, however, as the individual

becomes more accustomed to eating legumes on a regular basis, the body adjusts and there will be less bloating effects.

Soluble fibre has been shown to reduce some of the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and risk of developing intestinal ulcers. In addition, soluble fibre helps to manage loose stools and will lead to a healthier colon.

Beans can be versatile and therefore they make great additions to many dishes or used as an entree or even a snack.

Canned beans are inexpensive and convenient to use without a need to cook them. Just drain and rinse to remove the gas-forming, salty liquid before adding

beans to recipes. Otherwise, dried

beans are also available in grocery stores. They require some work by soaking and boiling, but are great additions to the pantry for a cheap source of protein and fibre for meals.

Recipe variationsSome ways to use

pulses include adding canned bean medley mixture to salads for crunch, sprinkling cooked lentils or chickpeas on pizza, along with other toppings and adding cooked red kidney beans to rice pilaf for extra flavour and fibre.

Roasted chickpeas make an excellent and convenient, easy to prepare snack. Cooked brown lentils can be substituted for ground beef in lasagna for a plant-

based alternative to a meat-dish. Chickpea or white kidney bean hummus is a great dip for vegetables or pita.

Pureed cooked beans added to tomato pasta sauces will offer more body and nutrition. Also, adding lentils to soup helps to thicken it without the need for high fat cream.

Considering that legumes have top notch nutritional benefits of soluble fibre, protein, iron and are low fat in nature, these versatile and inexpensive additions to meals more often will do the body, heart and bowels good.

Tuesday was a beautiful cool day on the Alberni Golf Course today, a bit cooler than it has been, a real treat.

In the nine-hole ladies low handicap group low gross was shared by Claudia Romaniuk and Kathy Toms. Kathy Toms won the low net. Doreen Grant had the lowest putts of the day.

In the high handicap group, Betty Adair and Audrey Pemberton shared both low gross as well as low net.

Betty Adair had the lowest putts. Adair had a chip in on No. 11.

Last Thursday a group of nine-hole ladies went on a road trip and played the Comox Golf Course.

For the 18-hole ladies, it was the first day of the 18-hole club championship, next Tuesday will be the second and last round.

Low Gross was won by Carol Bouchard with an 83, Shirley Goodman won low net with 67.

The monthly medal winner was Goodman with her 67.

For the KP challenge, Gayle Rhodes won on No. 6 and Carol Hastings won on No. 14. Shannon Haggard won the special prize.

It was nice to see Rosemary Frankian, she is here visiting from California.

In the words of Lee Trevino: There are two things not long for this world—dogs that chase cars and pro golfers who chip for pars.

Lindores back in B.C.

The UBC Thunderbirds men’s hockey program is proud to introduce the first members of its latest recruiting class. Two goaltenders and two forwards, all British Columbians—including one player from Port Alberni—will be joining a UBC team that finished with an 11-15-2 regular season record last year.

Robert Lindores returns to B.C. after spending the last two seasons playing for the NCAA Division I hockey program at Northern Michigan University.

The right winger from Port Alberni recorded one assist in 16 games played with the Wildcats.

“I am extremely excited to have the

opportunity to play hockey in my home province again and attend a great school like UBC,” said the 6-foot-1 Lindores.

“I want to contribute to the team where I’m asked and make an immediate impact. I’m excited for the season to start and thankful for a fresh start.”

Before heading south, Lindores

played just over four seasons in the BCHL, splitting time between the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and Surrey Eagles.

He scored six goals and nine assists in 89 regular season appearances with Alberni Valley between 2007 and 2010.

With Surrey, Lindores tallied 35

goals and 47 assists in 118 regular season games. In 37 BCHL playoff outings, he had eight goals and 12 assists.

“Robert comes in with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove,” said Kuntz.

“He’s hungry. We like hungry players. I have had a good rapport with Robert since his days with the Surrey Eagles in which he had a point-per-game final season and an exceptional playoff.

“Robert is a guy that will come in and work extremely hard.

“He is a heavy, physical player from Vancouver Island that will grind his opponents down and contribute positively to our group.

“Robert is a great fit for our program,” Kuntz added.

Lindores will be enrolled in the Faculty of Arts in the fall.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

PREPARE FOR A CAREER IN ENGINEERINGStart your degree at NIC and transfer seamlessly to engineering programs at UVic, UBC, and SFU

Like figuring out how things work, taking them apart, and tackling the math, physics, or elec-trical solutions behind everyday objects?

Consider a career in engineering with North Island College this fall.

Engineering students take a full term of courses in Port Alberni this September and a mix of courses at the Port Alberni and Comox Valley campuses this winter. NIC also offers an Introduction to Engineering Design course each spring at its Comox Valley campus.

The pathway provides a more supported transition to university for students interested in the

growing field of science, technology, engineering and math.

“By staying home I can really focus on school, without the distractions,” said student Roderick Gravoueille, who received scholarships to NIC and UVic through the UVic Dual Admission program. “Ideally, I’ll graduate debt free because I started at North Island College.”

For mature student Justin Erickson, the program put an engineering degree within reach. “One of the advantages of going to NIC was that I could actually afford to go back,” he said. “I couldn’t have moved my whole family to Victoria right away.”

Students have transferred success-fully into the second year at UVic, UBC, SFU, and institutions outside of BC.

“In some cases they are actually ahead of other students because they’ve taken an extra course at NIC,” said instructor Dennis Lightfoot.

Program graduates say the reason for their success is simple.

“I would recommend North Island College to anyone,” said student Mike Demone. “Having access to professors who really care makes you want to succeed more than anything.”

Potter fulfills dream with Blue Fish GallerySUSAN QUINN

ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

“Every great dream begins with a dreamer.” So goes the quote attributed to Harriet Tubman, an African-American abolitionist in the American Civil War.

Cheryl Iwanowsky moved to Port Alberni in 2007 from Prince George as a banker with RBC Royal Bank—as far apart culturally as one can get from a woman who was born before the turn of the 20th century and died before the Great Depression; but like Tubman, a woman with a dream.

A year ago this month, Iwanowsky finally acted on hers; she retired from banking and threw her passion, enthusiasm and type A work ethic into her dream: Blue Fish Gallery.

Take one step into the Blue Fish Gallery and the senses are assaulted with tones, texture, talent.

Pottery from Corry Lunn, Mussels and More, and of course Iwanowsky’s own, including her popular Women and Water series of mugs. Fused glass jewelry from Damaris Oakley of Redroom Artglass in Nanaimo, blown glass from famed artist Ted Jolda, slump moulded, glass waterbomber platters from Jim Wilson, soap from Cathy Herbertson in Port Alberni and Salt Spring Soapworks, leather bags from B.C. to Ontario that she can barely keep on the shelves.

Clothing from Jo’Momma Designs of Powell River, and wood sculptures of banana slugs from David Parsanishi

that are popular with visitors.

“The first year I really wanted to start off with a bang so I carry everything,” she said. Most of the work has been purchased wholesale, but Iwanowsky will accept consignment work too.

Many of the artists already knew Iwanowsky from numerous juried art shows she

participated in with her own pottery.

Upstairs is filled with brightly coloured fair trade clothing, felted items, handicrafts and scarves of every description: silk, linen, viscose, screen printed, knitted and more. The pieces are an homage to Iwanowsky’s childhood spent in Southeast Asia.

Blue Fish carries a limited selection of

Pot Luck Ceramics, for which Iwanowsky does not receive a profit (“It’s my way of helping,” she said).

Decorative nooks and crannies hold items such as handspun and dyed wool from Marg Jones of Port Alberni, eye-catching functional figurines made of flatware by Forked Up Art, a small business from Utah, and jewelry made

from Cambodian shell casings.

In all, Blue Fish represents 48 artists—many more than Iwanowsky initially anticipated.

“It’s just been

overwhelming, the support,” she said of both the arts community and the city of Port Alberni at large.

“I bought this little house and opened this gallery thinking I could have a little art gallery…just enjoy my life and do what I want to do.

“It took off like wildfire,” she said. “I

had no idea.“It’s really inspiring

to walk in here and see all this beautiful handmade work,” added Iwanowsky, who can often be seen working on her own pottery in the back room of the gallery, which houses a small kiln as well as a work table, storage space and kitchen.

From / A25Blue Fish Gallery

was nothing much to look at when the realtor brought Iwanowsky and her husband Andy, a cabinetmaker, by the house. Nondescript, gray, doing nothing to make a good impression on potential buyers, Iwanowsky didn’t even want to go inside. Andy persuaded her to take the chance. “It’s got good lines,” he said.

“When I walked in, I just knew right away,” Iwanowsky said, a grin lighting up her face. “This is the house. It’s going to change my life.”

She has never looked back. Iwanowsky and her husband built all the fixtures themselves, and the polished wood displays tastefully offsets the pottery, jewelry, glasswork and other pieces.

And although people regularly question her about why she would open on Second

Avenue, off the main drag, Iwanowsky said it’s never been an issue. “We were looking for a place that was commercially zoned and near the [Harbour] Quay,” she said.

Blue Fish Gallery has become a destination for people coming to Port Alberni from places like Nanaimo and Qualicum Beach to shop and have lunch, she added.

The rest of the Tubman quote goes something like this: “Always remember you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”

After a year of following her passion, Iwanowsky is just getting started.

Blue Fish Gallery is located at 2907 Second Ave. and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30–5:30 p.m. Phone 778-419-3474 or search bluefishgallery.info online.

Gallery celebratesNew exhibit a magical odyssey into oils

“A Glimpse into the Magical Odyssey of Oil Painting” is the title of our current art exhibit at the Rollin Art Centre’s Gallery, featuring local artist Vi McConnell.

This art exhibit showcases

McConnell’s original oil paintings. Her show runs until Sept. 13. Meet Vi at her artist reception Saturday, Aug. 9 from 1–3 p.m. Join her and Rollin Art Centre staff in the gallery for refreshments and art.

Kid camps end in two weeks

Children ages 5-9, the Rollin Art Centre’s summer art camps

have only 2 weeks left. Camps run every Tues., Wed., and Fri. These summer art programs promise a creative outlet children need and enjoy. Each week focuses on a different art medium.

Two camps are left: Sculpture and Comic Books.

Our wonderful summer student, Tess, has planned

fun activities that intergrade art with learning. At each camp the children will fabricate stimulating artwork and foster friendships with peers. The cost is only $25 per week.

Terrace teas continue

ADSS grad student Arlene Oldale will be the next musical entertainer for our

summer Teas on the Terrace on Aug. 14.

Tickets are on sale at the Rollin Art Centre; seating is limited. Tickets are $10 each. Times: 1-3 p.m.
