How does a guy from Jersey City, New Jersey, who played basketball with the Harlem Globetrotters and travelled the world, end up living in Port Alberni working as a youth pastor?

“The community has welcomed us and we love it here,” Harold “Lefty” Williams said. “And when you’re doing something you love then it doesn’t matter where you are.”

Williams has been the youth pastor at Jericho Road Church since November 2012. He also coached the Alberni District Secondary School junior boys basketball team last season. He and his wife Shyneefa live in Port Alberni with their children Kiara and Elisha.

Williams was indeed born and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey and is one of eight children born to Rita Williams. A twin, he and his sister Tramaine are the second oldest in the family, most of whom now reside in California.

Williams attended St. Aloysius High School in New Jersey where he was a standout basketball player who scored 1,000 points. But he was also a good student, and counts

math and Spanish among his favourite courses.

“My Spanish teacher believed in me and encouraged me to think about life after basketball or if basketball didn’t turn out,” Williams said.

After graduating, he attended Jersey City University, where he earned degrees in communications and business management.

Basketball and faith are constant threads that weave their way through Williams’ life. “Basketball kept me out of a life of drugs, gangs and trouble,” he said. “It was my

exhale; it was my way out.”

Faith has been a cornerstone in Williams’ life since childhood. His introduction to religion was waking up in the dead of night to find his mother praying and joining her. And his late grandfather Thomas, a once illiterate cotton farmer, learned how to read by reading the bible, he said.

Williams came from a broken home, and he credits his grandfather with being a strong male role model in his life.

A basketball camp at Jericho Road Church is all about giving back, says camp coordinator Harold “Lefty” Williams.

More than 60 boys and girls from Grades 4-12 attended the DARE 2 Dream Basketball Camp last month in the former Klitsa School gym, which has been well kept since the school closed several years ago.

Campers learned core basketball fundamentals such as ball handling, passing and shooting defense over the course of the week.

Williams structured the camp around six elements: mind, body, soul, education, accountability and enthusiasm.

“All of those things helped me become the

player and the person that I am today,” Williams said.

“If you model those things then kids will buy in, especially if they know you care, and the more they care the more they want to know.”

Williams played for the Harlem Globetrotters as well as their perennial opponents, the Washington Generals. He also saw action with several pro teams in England and Japan.

Before that, he

played for Jersey City University, where he was a standout player, and a graduate of the university’s business and communications programs.

Williams played competitive basketball since elementary school. During the school year he played basketball six days a week. “And seven days a week in the summer,” he said.

Williams coached the Alberni District Secondary School junior boys team this past season. He took stock of the hoops scene in Port Alberni and has been percolating some ideas about how to up its game.

One of those ideas is a basketball academy that would run year round.

Steven Tatoosh has been re-elected as chief councillor of the Hupacasath First Nation.

Steven Tatoosh defeated former Hupacasath councillor Brenda Sayers 87-57 to win the top seat in the First Nation’s election, which was held on April 5.

“It was close when the ballots were first being counted, neck and neck really so I was nervous,” Tatoosh said with a laugh. “But after 23 votes I pulled ahead. A few people gave me the head nod and I knew I had it.”

New councillor Jim Tatoosh and

incumbent Warren Lauder won their seats by acclamation.

There were 144 votes cast out of 216 eligible voters, 40 of whom mailed in ballots.

Tribe elections can be edgy affairs, Tatoosh said. There was a bit of baiting at an all candidates’ meeting last week but neither Tatoosh or Sayers were having any of it, he said.

“Brenda and I agreed to be civil with one another and we were,” Tatoosh said.

“I know from working with her that whoever won, the people would get a good job out of the both of us.”

Sayers didn’t return calls by deadline.

The tribe will continue to participate in the

Waterfront North Development Study with the city and Port Alberni Port Authority. Joint council discussions with the Tseshaht First Nation will also continue. And the tribe continues to strengthen its financial affairs, Tatoosh said.

New priorities this term include establishing a budget for youth and elder programs and kick-starting tribal committee participation. Officials are also examining beautifying tribal waterfront lands, Tatoosh said.

Implementation of the elements received as compensation for TFL 44 logging activity impact will

also continue, as will plans for developing more micro hydro projects.

Also in the works is a new community centre for elders and youth. “Our offices are a place of business and we want to develop something more community friendly,” Tatoosh said.

“I’d like to leave that kind of legacy.”

Officials will also be evaluating the Hupacasath’s involvement in the legal challenge to Canada’s investment treaty with China, which Sayers spearheaded in January.

“I believe we need to finish what we started as long as it isn’t a financial burden to the tribe,” Tatoosh

said.The Hupacasath

are also dealing with the resignation of chief executive officer Robert Duncan, who left suddenly to pursue other opportunities.

“We’re not going to replace him for now. We’re evaluating his workload and will

distribute it to other staff,” Tatoosh said.

This is the second term as chief councillor for Tatoosh. He said the secret to being more

comfortable with the role is tending to grassroots issues at home.

“I don’t need to go to Ottawa to vote for national chief and

I don’t need to go to First Nations Summit meetings,” he said.

“I did at first, but there’s nuts and bolts work to do at home.”

Coulson in running for former Zellers buildingA major player

in Port Alberni’s

corporate scene is in the running to buy the old Zellers property on Third Avenue.

Port Alberni Mayor John Douglas made the announcement on his Facebook page on Tuesday.

“I think it’s heartening that we have one of our own citizens stepping up and getting involved,” Douglas wrote.

“He sees the economic potential of getting in on the ground floor.”

The deal is subject to approval yet, Douglas said in a later interview with the News.

City officials have toured the property with Wayne Coulson

of The Coulson Group of Companies and discussed its vision for the uptown with him at length, Douglas said. “He saw something and got to work,” he said.

Douglas wouldn’t disclose what Coulson’s plans for the building were.

He did say however that they are consistent with the city’s vision of revitalizing the area with new residential units and commercial outlets.

Building new infrastructure to attract more seniors was part of Douglas’ platform during the civic election, and uptown was one of several areas that could accommodate that, he said then.

The uptown already has several successful businesses including a butcher shop, Flandangles, Merit Furniture, Steampunk Café and Coffee House and The Smoke Stack. But they could be complemented with a grocery outlet, bakery, pharmacy and medical clinic, Douglas added.

The property is approximately four acres in size and zoned CMX commercial, which can flexibly accommodate several uses, city planner Scott Smith said.

Zellers announced it was closing last year, and closed its doors for good in mid-March.

Several possibilities were discussed about its potential use including a commercial-residential outlet, several commercial outlets inside like a mall, a grocery store, and a shelter or social service agency.

The showdown between city council and the owner of the burned out Tidebrook Hotel and restaurant has advanced.

City councillors voted against a request by property owner Jack Purdy for an extension to tear down the burned out restaurant on Gertrude Street.

An attorney involved with the issue sent the request to city officials via e-mail. Purdy wanted an extension until May 31 to evaluate how the property could be redeveloped.

The city could grant the extension or proceed with the next step in cleaning the property up under terms of the community charter.

That next step will be to send a registered letter about the matter to Purdy and invoke a show cause hearing.

Coun. Cindy Solda supported moving to the next step. “I’ve heard empty promises about his other properties,” she said.

DeLuca to run against FraserTourism business

operator Darren DeLuca will be the BC Liberal candidate in Alberni-Pacific Rim in the May 14 B.C. election.

“Our community is ready for change, for a vision of prosperity and jobs, and that’s what I will commit to do,” said DeLuca. “NDP candidate Scott Fraser has not done the job, and it’s time for him to go.”

DeLuca owns a big-game guiding company (Vancouver Island Guide Outfitters Inc.) that has worldwide clients.

He is a director of the Port Alberni Junior Hockey Society (owners of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs) and helped spearhead the drive to make the team community owned. DeLuca is also a director of the Port Alberni Port Authority and co-chair of the Alberni Clayoquot Transportation Committee.

“At this crucial moment, when the forest industry is finally ready to invest in jobs and infrastructure, it is the height of irresponsibility for Scott Fraser to call for the banning of old-growth logging,” said DeLuca. “Our union millworkers and loggers would be laid off instantly.’

“What we should be doing now is encouraging those companies to invest, not driving them away.”

Another priority, he said, is improved highways and road infrastructure. “For too long the local economy has been constrained by lack of access, and should any of these projects proceed to approval, a new highway will be essential.

“Better roads and infrastructure in any area of Alberni-Pacific Rim would be good news for the tourist industry as well as for economic

development. A lot of constituents depend on tourism, and it needs all the help it can get.”

Mining is another bright light on the horizon, he said: “With two major mine projects on the books, Eagle Rock and Raven Coal, and more exploration happening in the region, there is new opportunity to create many high-paying, skilled, union jobs.”

“B.C.’s environmental approval process is one of the most rigorous and transparent processes in the world, it includes public

consultation, and major projects must pass this demanding process before being approved. We need to let the process continue and be completed.”

DeLuca, also a realtor, says he supports the efforts of the PAPA to develop a transshipping centre near Coleman Creek in the Alberni Inlet. “The transshipping centre would create hundreds of union jobs and tens of millions of dollars in economic activity.”

DeLuca will be officially nominated on April 12 at Hollies Executive Golf Course.

Ford gets bylaw exemptionThe new Van Isle

Ford dealership on Beaver Creek Road is another step closer to becoming reality.

Port Alberni city councillors voted Monday to allow a floodplain bylaw exemption to the dealership.

The property is now

zoned C4 Highway Commercial District, and has been annexed from Stirling Field, a report noted.

The exemption is required to better accommodate moving vehicles in and out of showroom and service bay spaces.

The city took

into consideration data in stormwater management and lot grading plans, professional engineer and geoscientist reports, as well as a covenant insulating the city in the event of flood damage, the report noted.

V ICTORIA –This is the first of a series of policy

commentaries on the four main parties contesting the 2013 B.C. election.

I’m starting with the B.C. Green Party, which has higher than usual hopes for the 2013 election.

It was also the first to put out a substantial policy document, albeit one that is still being debated and altered.

Green Book 2013 continues the Utopian positions that only a party with no chance of forming a government has the luxury to put forward.

For example, they would double the area of parks in B.C., but take 100 years to do it.

Immediately, they would almost double the carbon tax, taking it from seven to 12 cents on a litre of gasoline.

Greens would extend this steeply increased

carbon tax to industries such as natural gas and cement production. Leader Jane Sterk told me she expects cement producers and the like to adapt, rather than shut down as their competitive position erodes.

And what about the extra billions in carbon tax revenues?

Sterk says most should continue to go to income tax reductions, as is now the case, because the purpose is to change consumption patterns, not to increase overall tax revenue.

Most, but not all.“We think there is an

argument to be made for putting, for a period of time, the increased revenue from the carbon tax into creating the infrastructure that allows people to benefit from a carbon tax,” Sterk said.

That means transit, and potentially retrofits of homes and other buildings as well.

Tax increase aside, this is essentially the NDP position too.

The Greens emphasize wind and geothermal power.

Sterk faces the awkward task of arguing against hydroelectric expansion.

A Green government would cancel the Site C dam project on the Peace

River. Sterk says

it would only serve as a subsidy to liquefied natural gas exports, which she doesn’t believe

materialize as international competitors develop. The Greens’ star candidate, University of Victoria climate scientist Andrew Weaver, agrees.

Both point to vast reserves of Russian gas that may well get to Asia more quickly and cheaply.

Sterk said the 35,000 existing gas wells in northern B.C. “are not going to be shut down.”

Actually, in the absence of LNG exports, that

is exactly what would happen to many of them.

The U.S. has its own shale gas supplies, and is B.C.’s only current export customer. Converting transport trucks and BC Ferries to LNG fuel isn’t going to maintain the vast industry blooming in northern B.C.

The official Green Party position is to place a moratorium on B.C. gas drilling while a comprehensive water use policy is developed.

Current innovations such as reusing municipal wastewater are ignored.

The Green platform also demands disclosure of chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing, which the B.C. Oil and Gas Commission has already done.

If one were to design a self-fulfilling prophecy that B.C.’s LNG project is doomed to fail, the Green Party platform would be a good place to start.

Reading through Green Book 2013, I’m left with the impression that much of it remains calculated as a soothing message.

If a tree falls in Ottawa...

Sometimes, it feels like the 1880s.That was a time when it could take months for

messages or policy statements or even election results to get back and forth from B.C. to the federal seat of power in Ottawa. And when these messages arrived, most people in B.C. didn’t hear them or weren’t interested.

Most likely, they were more concerned with basic survival in a tough time than they were the blatherings of the political and social elite in a land so far away it might as well be China.

Today, with a provincial election creeping closer, the economy still challenging us all and local issues always front of mind, the messages coming from Ottawa reach here much faster, but they do not exactly resonate with most residents of Parksville Qualicum Beach.

Our representative — and it doesn’t matter who it may be or which party he/she represents — does his level best to relay the messages.

Often, it seems the MPs of B.C. show up locally when it’s time for a photo opp or to dole out federal funds for a park.

To be fair, Nanaimo-Alberni Conservative MP James Lunney has always been available to us for comment. But, really, how much of what he does or what his government does captures the daily attention of anyone in Parksville Qualicum Beach who is not a political junkie?

They have done much good in our estimation, these federal Conservatives. They have strengthened our presence in the North, the last Canadian frontier. They have forged ahead with relationships and made agreements with nations (Cuba, France, etc.) that don’t exactly thrill our American cousins.

In the past few days, the federal government has also announced a unique skills training program, something better than anything any provincial party has come up with, despite the talk here of its importance by all three major political parties.

Still, and back to our original point, if a tree (or policy) falls in an Ottawa forest, does anyone in B.C., hear it?

Trawlers are a real drag

To the Editor,Factory trawlers

like the Norwegian trawler Raw Spirit should be shipped back to Norway. Greenpeace would be right there to shut them down. Why are we letting them in here?

They drag nets on the bottom of the seabeds and everything in the nets’ way is gone. Who is willing to take the personal responsibility when our fishing is depleted?

We are close enough to this problem without the trawler being established here yet.

Sport fishing and trolling for salmon are far more sustainable, and provide more jobs, than dragging the bottom of the ocean floor.

That will deplete most of what we have left.

Stand up and voice your opinions.

Dam money saves bacon

To the Editor,It’s important

to realize that the

only way the city residential tax increase is below ten percent is because of a one-time $300,000 transfer from the McLean Mill dam repairs to the city coffers.

Otherwise, the tax increase would be closer to eleven percent.

My specific recommendations for cost cutting were ignored: a museum admission charge, an end to the money-losing summer hockey school ($60,000 to $70,000 per year), and a big reduction in the travel budget for city councillors who all want to attend out-of-town conferences all the time.

The specific reason for the unnecessary, costly boondoggle of a new high school at the new location was to poach on city facilities such as the track.

As a condition of school relocation, the school district should have been required to pay for the maintenance of facilities such as the track and any ball fields, etc. that they may use.

That didn’t happen, so were stuck with a $700,000 bill for the track alone.

There has been no attempt to bring city

managers to heel, including the Parks and Recreation and museum directors.

The museum budget and salaries,for example, are grossly inflated. And the McLean Mill and steam train operations have been a bad, expensive joke for over ten years.

Again, my experience in the museum field has been ignored. Specifically, I’ve said that McLean Mill needs at least 25,000 visitors annually to come close to breaking even, not 12,000 to 15,000.

Yet the very expensive farce goes on year after year. Well over $5 million dollars have been spent since 2000.

Others have commented upon our Cadillac fire department, economic development office (which should be in the regional district), and very high wages, none of which are being brought under control.

The simple truth is that nobody at city hall cares about the bloated city budgets and the severe financial difficulties they create for some homeowners (and renters as their rates

go up). Who cares if some

people are having great trouble in making ends meet? We bureaucrats and councillors are alright.

Trawlers are a real drag

budget: taxes to rise 1.26% (www.albernivalleynews.com, April 3).

As Chair of the Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) Board of Trustees, I would like to take this opportunity to address the reference made in this article to the VIRL levy.

The article says that “the Vancouver Island Regional Library’s levy is going up by seven per cent this year.”

In fact, the increase is 5.95%. The 5.95% includes a 1% dedicated increase to correct deferred maintenance issues in many of our 38 branches, as well as a 1.25% dedicated increase to the redevelopment of a number of branches. While the overall increase is 5.95%, the

effective increase for the Alberni Clayoquot Regional District is 5.22%. The per capita increase to the over 400,000 residents in our service area is $2.34.

The trustees on our Board, who represent 28 municipalities and 10 regional districts, work together in a spirit of collaboration and cooperation to respond to the needs and expectations of the many varied communities we serve.

Married life after rehab

Your husband has had a long-term drinking

problem. The longer it went on, the more alone you felt. He may have been a good provider, but you felt neglected, because most evenings he was zoned out on alcohol.

It came to a head two months ago when you were ready to leave. He quit drinking and went to rehab, returning last week. He declares he quit for good this time. He looks the same, and you wonder…

The two of you have just entered one the highest risk periods of your marriage.

If living with a functioning alcoholic was difficult, living with a recovering alcoholic may be temporarily even more taxing.

It is no coincidence that many marriages end after rehab.

Below are three common post-

drinking/post-rehab scenarios (without relapse).

Scenario oneAll he changed was

his drinking. If he smoked before, he still smokes.

If he was grouchy before, he is still a grouch.

If he wasn’t interested in sex in his drinking days, nothing much has changed.

He hangs out with the same friends, only he doesn’t drink.

He gets defensive if you try to talk about it, just like before.

Scenario twoHe goes to a meeting

every night, leaving you alone.

He explains that his sobriety depends on it.

His behaviour is a little better, and he definitely smells better, but you’re still

lonely in the evenings.Addiction is

compulsive seeking and consuming something. It was alcohol.

Now it’s meetings. He has substituted one addiction for another.

Just as he used to get agitated if he couldn’t drink, now he gets agitated if he can’t go to a meeting.

After a few weeks or months of this some men will shift into scenario three.

Scenario threeHe may or may not

go to a few meetings, but he sees a therapist who is helping him deal with the old demons that underlay his drinking.

He is becoming more personally insightful, happier, more energetic and more loving.

In short he’s experiencing a burst of personal growth.

He wants to talk about things including whether he should change

professions. His old friends are

drifting away. All three scenarios

can be scary for you as the spouse, because a lot of personal change is required of you too, starting with an abundance of patience.

The problem was alcohol, you thought, but it turned out to be something much deeper. His dealing with his demons (scenario three) exposes your demons.

Surprise! When something changes, everything changes, including you, if you’re still there.

Making it through the first couple of years after alcohol will at the very least make heavy demands on your reservoir of patience ... and on his.

Helping recruit new students, flying the flag and demonstrating the city’s commitment to a School District 70 initiative are behind Mayor John Douglas’s pending trip to China.

City council voted to allow Douglas to accompany SD 70 officials to Enshi, China this spring. The trip will be underwritten with economic development funds.

The move was sparked by a presentation to councillors by SD 70 superintendent Cam Pinkerton on Monday.

Pinkerton said the district started recruiting foreign students to SD 70 three years ago. The initiative would create revenue through fees that would help offset budget pressures caused by declining enrolment.

SD 70 takes $17,000

in fees per year: $10,000 in tuition, $7,000 for home stay, plus other money for discretionary spending, Pinkerton said.

Under the arrangement, students study BC school curriculum in China for two years then come here to study their final two years. Chinese families sending their children is actually an investment, Pinkerton said.

The city benefits from the investment because most if not all of the money taken in is spent in the city, and families look to start a small business later for their children to slide into, he added.

Unlike in Canada, Chinese municipalities have jurisdiction in education, said Eric Gibb, spokesperson for Advanced Global Education Strategies.

Sending the mayor along on a recruiting trip is sending an implicit message to

Chinese education officials, Gibb said. “The mayor’s visit gives us stability,” he said. Diplomacy and visiting can be done cheaper via Skype for Facetime, Coun. Cindy Solda said.

“You can build relationships with technology but that human-to-human element is important,” Pinkerton said.

The city is under pressure not to spend so how much is it going to cost, Coun. Jack McLeman asked. Douglas’ end can be cost-shared with SD70, Pinkerton said.

Understanding the culture is important, Coun. Hira Chopra said. “Asian culture is different from the west, families are the biggest asset,” he said. “If we lose their trust you’ll never see them again.”

Fewer letters, fewer stamp sales and

less revenue have prompted Canada Post to question keeping their Argyle Street outlet open, a Canada Post spokesperson said.

City council voted to send a letter to Canada Post decrying the possible closure, and also to

ask a Canada Post spokesperson to appear before council to explain the move.

Canada Post has initiated a 30-day public consultation period to hear out the impacts of closing the lower Argyle Street outlet, spokesperson Anick Losier said. The process started on March 26 and ends on April 26.

Revenue has declined by up to 25 per cent nationally over the last five

years, Port Alberni included, Losier said. “We’re examining all post offices, not just Alberni’s,” she said.

Canada Post delivered two million fewer letters per day last year, Losier said.

People are communicating with each other and paying their bills online more, she added.

“People are sending fewer letters, buying fewer stamps and using the outlet less. We have to

adapt to that new reality by making tough decisions around where mail is delivered.”

A special committee is collecting feedback and will got though it before making a decision about operation of the Argyle Street outlet in mid-May.

If the outlet is to close, it will do so within 30 days, Losier said.

If it closes, its two staffers will be

absorbed into other operations, and mail can still be delivered at the Valley’s two other outlets: at Fairway Market and Pacific Rim Shopping Centre, five kilometres away.

Canada Post has to be strategic about where it operates outlets, Losier said. “We can’t be open for the sake of being open.”

The city isn’t alone in wanting the outlet to stay open, Coun. Cindy Solda said. “The ACRD sent them a letter too,” she said.

There was an uproar when the corporation closed its main office on Argyle Street, Solda said.

The motive behind

opening the small Argyle Street outlet has to be questioned, she added.

“Was it to pacify us and keep us quiet? It sucks, it sucks big time.”

Mayor Johnn Douglas said he would be touring the uptown with Canada Post officials on Wednesday, and said he would be discussing the city’s revitalization plans.

Audition for Fringe Festival playsBe part of the

upcoming Alberni Valley Fringe Theatre Festival.Two local writers are looking for actors for June 21,22,23.

There will be 19 shows in this inaugural Fringe Fest; including entries from Victoria, Chemainus, New Westminster, Chilliwack, Quadra Island and Gibsons.

Being involved with Fringe as an actor gives you a Fringe Pass to all shows.

Jenn Fisher-Bradley has written a play called Connections and needs male/female actors and hand drummers. Audition between 1-3 p.m. Sunday, April 14 at the Main Artery, 4969 Argyle St.

Auditions will also be held Sunday, April 21 between 1-3 p.m. for Gwynne Hunt’s

new play ‘Capsules’ — it’s about time.

Shelby Clydesdale, Brittney Savard and Shay-Lee McConnell spent last weekend gaining a new perspective on rep hockey at the bantam level as they participated in the U-16 BC Cup in the Cowichan Valley.

The Alberni Valley trio played for Vancouver Island in a pool against teams from the North and Kootenay. The other pool contained two Lower Mainland teams and Okanagan.

The Island U-16 girls won their game against Kootenay, lost against the North, and ended up having to play the North again on Saturday

morning. They lost in a very close game, a team spokesperson said, which vaulted them into playing for fifth and sixth against Okanagan on Sunday.

The Island girls came from behind to beat Okanagan 6-3 and finish in fifth place in B.C.

It was an exciting weekend for both the girls and their families, the team spokesperson said. “It was nice to see so much support from Port Alberni for the three girls who attended. There were numerous family members and friends who made the trip to see the girls play against the finest female bantam players

in B.C. McConnell, Savard and

Clydesdale should be very proud of this accomplishment, and now have a better idea of what is required to compete in a high-performance competition.

Clydesdale and Savard have hopes of attending the U-18 camp next season and McConnell expects to be at the U-16 competition again.

The click-click of the cue ball hitting an object ball and thunking into a pocket on a billiard table has always been satisfying for Maryann McConnell, owner of Alberni Valley Billiards and holder of numerous Canadian snooker and billiard titles.

From the first time she spied a billiard table—in the games room at the University of Guelph in Ontario, when she was 24 years old—McConnell has been hooked.

She has an honours degree in fine art, but McConnell was always a whiz at physics and math. Eight-ball and its associated games come easy to her. Last week it showed, as she won three

national titles at the Canadian Two-Sports Association Canadian Championships in Toronto.

McConnell won the women’s eight-ball event, placed second in the nine-ball event, third in Scotch Doubles eight-ball, and won two gold medals with her women’s eight- and nine-ball teams too.

In February, McConnell won her seventh BC eight-ball championship, the Scotch Doubles title and her ladies’ team

won the women’s eight-ball team event, all in Penticton.

She heads to the western Canadian championships, which is the qualifier for 2014, in Calgary in two weeks.

Billiards is a skilled endeavour, she says. “It’s not easy to be really, really good. It takes a lot of practice. Skill to begin with is really helpful and having some eye-hand coordination.

“I really feel like it’s the perfect pairing of the physical and mental,” she adds. “A lot of people don’t realize it, but it’s like a chess game without any squares on the board. It’s not about making your ball before the other person makes their ball, it’s about playing the eight ball and the cue ball around the

table.”Although she

plays on a pub team, billiards “has never been a bar game for me,” McConnell said. “I didn’t even play in a bar for 20 years.”

She started in that games room and drove every day to nearby Kitchener, where there was a good pool hall. She played snooker, practicing eight hours a day. She travelled to England to play and at one time was ranked second in the world.

McConnell admits she doesn’t travel too much to play eight-ball anymore: just to the provincials, nationals and western Canadians, as well as a trip to Las Vegas for a big tournament. And even that one is a big “if ” for her this year.

Badovinac repeats as national wrestling champNolan Badovinac,

a Grade 10 wrestler with Alberni Valley Wrestling Club, won two national titles at the 2013 Cadet/ Juvenile National Championships in Saskatoon last weekend.

Badovinac was one of eight members of Alberni Wrestling at the nationals.

Badovinac dominated the competition, winning his second consecutive Cadet (15/16 year old) national title on Saturday. He was undefeated in winning the gold medal in the Cadet Men’s 76-kilogram division.

On Sunday, Badovinac followed up his gold medal performance by winning the FILA Cadet Tournament (16/17 year old).

“Our national age groups in Canada are different than those internationally,” explained Alberni Coach James Messenger. “As a result they have a separate trials tournament on Sunday to select which wrestlers can

represent Canada internationally. Nolan steam rolled his competition and won the FILA division too.”

The win qualifies Badovinac to represent Canada at the Cadet World Championships in Serbia, Aug. 20–25.

Grade 12 athlete Jonathan Spencer wrestled the tournament of his life to win the silver medal in the Juvenile (17/18 year old) Men’s 69 kg division. Spencer won four matches enroute to the finals, where he lost a tough match to Montreal’s Francis Carter (who was selected the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler).

“Jonathan wrestled

unbelievably this weekend,” Messenger said. “I was really happy to see him have

success at Nationals... He wrestled very tough and very smart. There were no easy matches.”

On Sunday Spencer wrestled in the Greco Roman Tournament and finished fifth.

Twins Jordan and Jesse Wagner, both in Grade 11, continued their amazing season by both placing in the tough 54 kg Juvenile weight class.

With no fewer than four returning

national champions and several other medalists all competing at that weight, the Wagners showed why they belong in the top echelons of Canadian wrestling, Messenger said.

Jordan took fourth and Jesse sixth at 54 kg.

Jordan followed up his placing at uvenile with a bronze medal in the FILA Cadet Trials.

The finish makes him an alternate for the Canadian International team should he have the opportunity to compete.

Grade 10 Cadet Michel Kurucz was one match away from placing in the 60 kg Cadet girls division.

Kurucz had a solid tournament in her first trip to the nationals as did fellow Cadet wrestlers Remi Wells (58 kg), Eryk

Cardinal-Mckenzie (69 kg) and Dean Leyland (69 kg).

“I am very proud with how we ended the season,” Messenger said.

“Going into the tournament I had thought we had a good chance at some strong placings. Having four of our eight wrestlers place and to have everyone compete so well was an outstanding way to finish the season.”

Bob Namor1950-2013

We are deeply saddened by the passing of our son, father, papa and friend, Bob Namor on April 1, 2013 after a short battle with cancer. He is sur-vived by his mother Doris Namor, two children Rob Namor and Leanne (Chris) Fevens, six grandchildren, Natasha, Nicholas, Katie, Braydon, Kyle and Cody, his ex-wife of 35 yrs. Elona and

Bob was born and raised in Thunder Bay, lived and worked for the last 36 yrs in Port Alberni as a millwright at Catalyst, a cabinet maker, and a jack of all trades. He spent the last few years working as a millwright in Fort McMurray. He was a very sincere, caring, hardworking man and would do any-thing for anyone. Bob will be missed immensely.

The Summer Family Literacy Worker will work with the Literacy Alberni Society (LAS) to develop and implement a number of summer family and youth literacy projects in the Alberni Valley. As well, the positions will assist LAS to develop literacy curriculum materials and organize those materials for literacy learners. The position may also be responsible for working with volunteers.➤ Minimum of two successful years of post-secondary education in a Bachelor of

Education (B.Ed.) degree – Bachelors degree preferred;➤ This position is targeted towards aspiring or current BC teachers who would enjoy

undertaking some exciting community projects with literacy learners.➤ As this position is funded through a Service Canada grant, applicants must satisfy the

following requirements: 15-30 years old; Canadian citizen; have just completed a full year of post-secondary education; be planning to return to college/university in the fall

A tattoo on Williams’ left forearm cites Thomas’ last words to Harold before he died: “Just

keep pressing. Keep God first in your life and you will always make it.

“I got it tattooed so I never forget it,” Williams said.

Basketball movies are on Williams’ menu—the best of which he says is Love and Basketball. “I watch some of the

other movies and think ‘Nah, that’s not real,’” he said.

Williams reads his bible daily, and he is reading the book Googling God, by Mike Hayes.

“Who can think of a title like that?” he asked.

Williams would like to start in the fall of 2013, would run after school during the week and would teach fundamental basketball skills to young players.

Williams doesn’t foresee competing with other sports for players, observing that there are athletes who only want to play basketball.

“The most important thing I want to pass on is for players to enjoy the game, but to enjoy it the way it is supposed to be played,” he said.

Skills would only be part of the program he envisions. “Basketball is meant to be a family

environment. Players can be like your brothers and sisters,” he said. “Not every team is like that, but most teams I’ve been a part of have.”

Another idea would see kids brought to the Alberni Valley from the United States to study and play basketball, the same way kids come to Port Alberni to play junior hockey and go to school.

It would be an opportunity for kids to escape the inner-city morass of drugs, crime and lack of opportunity.

“Give them a positive environment, make them work hard and give them goals,” he said.

“Those that want

out would think about it.”

The ideas require more thought, planning and discussion, he admits.

No stranger to camps, Williams went to several in the off-season while growing up in Jersey City.

He credits former New York Knicks point guard Stephon Marbury with helping him get into basketball camps.

“I’d be gone all summer long at camps. I worked hard night and day on offense and defense so that when I got to school I’d be ready,” Williams said.

“Everything I learned I try to pass on now.”

Port Alberni’s

hoops past is a beacon to work towards and maybe one day eclipse, Williams said.

“Elmer Speidel is a member of our church and he often talks about how this used to be a big basketball town,” Williams said.

“If we can find a good core of kids and teach them how to play the right way then we can take it to the next level.”

The Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce is proud to once again honour some of the people and busi-nesses that make the Valley a great place to live.

Two new categories: new con-struction and renovations, have been added to the awards this year to rec-ognize those businesses that con-tinue to invest in the future of our community.

We appreciate those that took the time to send in nomina-tions for the awards this year, there were many outstanding nominees to choose from in most categories and the com-mittee had a tough time choosing the ultimate winners.

In the meantime, he has moved into the executive director’s offi ce at the Chamber of Commerce. Coming to Port Alberni from Parksville, Bill has an extensive background in business, including opening and operating a restaurant in Parksville.

Vancouver Island Limousine also gives back to the community with donations and transportation for fundraising events.Nominator said: Selena donated her limousine for a day for Heroes with Hearts Fundraising Dinner and Dance 2012 and for a day trip to the West Coast as a live auction prize. She even surprised Angel Magnussen by giving her and her friends a ride on her 16th birthday.

The Barclay is a full service hotel that welcomes visi-tors to the Alberni Valley with a comfortable and con-venient place to stay. Besides offering accommoda-tions, the Best Western also features the Stamp Café, Pastimes Sports Bar & Grill, conference rooms and a beer and wine store. The Barclay gives back to the com-munity by hosting many events throughout the year.

Nominator said: Best Western Barclay Hotel donated their banquet room and helped to create Heroes With Hearts Dinner and Dance 2011 and again in 2012, ben-efi tting Variety the children’s charity and BC Children’s Hospital. They helped Angel Magnussen raise over $10,000 for sick kids at these two events.

After fi ve years at their 3rd Avenue location, Jan and Karen Lavertu at West Coast Home Hardware eased their growing pains in 2012 by moving their to the Al-berni Mall on Johnston Road. The move nearly qua-drupled their retail space and doubled their workforce. Winners of the 2009 Chamber of Commerce Customer Service Award, West Coast Home Hardware continues to serve the community with a new store and expanded product line.

Nominator said: Home Hardware’s faith in the future of Port Alberni has breathed new life into Alberni Mall and the local economy.

Tseshaht Market opened in 1979 with just two gas pumps but after a fi re that same year, they rebuilt and reopened in 1980. Since then the gas bar and store have both grown and this year a major renovation has recently been com-pleted. Tseshaht market supports Alberni Valley and Ab-original community events such as Thunder in the Valley, Raise the Reader, and the Bread of Life, Elders confer-ence, Youth in Business conference, Aboriginal Business conferences and Jr Girls basketball team

Nominator said: Tseshaht market is an asset to our com-munity whose spirit expands beyond the aboriginal commu-nity. They demonstrate how the Aboriginal community can participate in the mainstream economy successfully.

Melody was instrumental in starting the ADSS Breakfast Club fi ve years ago that has been cred-ited with improving student attendance rates. Melody has helped to raise funds and awareness to support the program that feeds more than 400 students fi ve days a week. The program has ex-panded to include a discreet grocery cupboard, hygiene kits and used clothing.

Nominator said: Melody also does volunteer work with several other groups in Port Alberni.

Over the years both Bob & Jan have not only owned, operated and sold one the most successful businesses in town but instead of taking a back seat and retiring they have donated hours and hours to important issues to make this town a better place. Jan is chair of Ty Watson House spending countless hours ensuring that it runs smoothly. Bob is a member of the Chamber of Com-merce, The Pacifi c Salmon Foundation and many other count-less committees sharing his vast knowledge of Port Alberni. His latest project of fund raising for the Alberni Bulldogs has been extremely successful. Bob and Jan work as a team.

Nominator said: Bob and Jan volunteer for so many causes one can’t keep track of them however they always deliver on their promises.

For more than two decades, Ron has worked tire-lessly at the Alano Club, which is a place to help recovering alcoholics and former drug addicts reintegrate into society. In recent years he has served as president of the club.

Nominator said: This is a really good organiza-tion in our community that has been successful in helping those with addictions and Ron has been a really big part of that success.

Eden Tree Farm and Gardening is dedicated to sus-tainable, local, and organic agriculture. Heather and Peter and their family strive to help others to garden and live more sustainably, offering innovative products, consulting services and educational activities. Take a look around their farm to see how they have creatively recycled and upcycled everyday household items.

Nominator said: This is a cool farm, run by people who know their stuff.

Bill Thomson’s ancestors were among the fi rst to come to the Alberni Valley back in 1890. Hardworking Scotsmen, they carved out a life and a dairy farm for their family. Although no longer a dairy farm, Farmer Bill continues that legacy of working the land with sustainable farming practices and direct to consumer products available at the Farmer’s Market.

Nominator said: Farmer Bill’s is an important part of the Valley’s history that continues to support and encour-age agriculture in the area in a positive way.

Anyone who has ever lined up at the farmer’s market for Nash Dahliwal’s blueberries, knows just how big and juicy Madho blueberries are. Operating in South Port, Madho Farm offersu-pick and picked blueberries that they sell locally, out to the West Coast and to Vancouver. They use environmentally-friendly growing techniques and the whole family pitches in at Madho in season.

Nominator said: Children and families are the blood of life for Madho Farms. They are encour-aged to pick blueberries and the whole family can eat as many berries as they can hold. All get a warm welcome and a smile.

Jordie is a dedicated athlete who has earned con-secutive fi ve-time girls wrestling champion for her weight class, a feat never accomplished by any-one else.

Denaye is involved is several sports and is a huge part of our school community. She also helps with coaching the Junior Girls Basketball team.

Grade 12 student Ezra is an amazing role mod-el, who is attending public school for the fi rst time, while taking two courses at North Is-land College. Ezra is also a highly success-ful member of the senior Leadership Class, is involved in sports, maintains a straight A average and is a lifeguard and swimming instructor outside of class.

In 2009 Portal Players Dramatic Society began of-fering after-school classes in Drama and Theatre Studies through the STAGES Youth Theatre Pro-gram.Taught by Teresa Drew, with curriculum co-developed by her sister, Wendy Karpuik, STAGES students learn the ins and outs of stage craft, cul-minating in two public performances each year.

Nominator said: By helping their talent develop at an early age, students have an opportunity to de-velop a solid groundwork for future endeavours in the performing arts.

Kids in Port Alberni love to Get Slammed on Pro D days or at week-long summer camps operated by West Coast Slam. Using what he learned in the Royal Navy, Gary Spencer-Smith and his great crew have developed fun activities to teach kids skills, confi dence and leadership. Slam is also inclusive, working with their sponsors to make sure every child has the opportunity to Get Slammed if they want to.

After almost 30 years on 4th Avenue, Gayle Ste-phen-Player moved down the hill to Argyle and Kingsway, renovating the location into a chic shop for women. Gayle and her daughter Rebecca ex-panded their space with style using local contrac-tors and having their front counter custom built from a beautiful wood slab from McLean Mill.

This one-stop health centre offi cially opened its doors in February. The centre, which includes a walk-in clinic, Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy and Life Labs, was the project of local doctors, Marc Puts and Damian White. The 7,800 square foot build-ing includes local wood from Nagaard Sawmill and local labour was used by contractor West Beaufort Construction.

North Island College invested in the future by ex-panding their Culinary Arts Program and build-ing a facility to house it. Now students learn their craft in a state-of-the-art kitchen and serve lunch in a spacious dining room. The group also offers catering on request.

Culinary The Alberni Valley Seniors Citizens Homes Soci-ety has been working hard to replace their old, severely outdated, cottages. The man behind the project has been long-time society president Ernie Bigelow.The society now has 10 four-unit cottages with completely self-contained suites built to high standards via the lead of Bill Goorts Contracting. There is also a separate 1 unit rental cottage that was initially designed as a caretaker suite but that is currently rented. Currently there is a fi ve to sev-en year wait list for these units.

The renovation at Tseshaht Market has created a showpiece of First nations art that is functional and welcoming. Built with local contractors, in-cluding the beautiful large etched windows, the new building has expanded the market’s space, adding a bright coffee-shop style seating area.

Nominator said: Tseshaht Market is such a beauti-ful venue that both locals and visitors will not be able to resist dropping in to check it out.

Valley Vision is as innovative on outside as it is on the inside. Using the latest technology, the staff at Valley Vision strive to provide individualized care that both educates and assures patients they are receiving the best eye care solutions. The renova-tion of the building on Redford has made a simple visit to the optometrist a visual treat.

Dan epitomizes what community involvement and volunteerism means in a com-munity. He has been a Kiwanis member for over 30 years taking the role of president four times. Through his involvement the Our Town Youth Program began in 1992. As well, Dan has been the president of Salmon Festival 16 of the past 41 years.

Whether in a cast or not, nothing stops Barb from helping people. Not only does she belong to the Kinette Club of Port Alberni, but if anyone or any-thing needs help of any kind, Barb will be there and if she can’t help, she will fi nd folks who can and will.

But Murray takes his wel-come outside the Valley too, sharing his sweets at events in other communities all over the island and on the Low-er Mainland. At home he gives back to the community with yummy and fun Easter and Christmas events.

The NEDC Nuu-chah-nulth Economic Develop Cor-poration has earned national recognition for their work, more than tripling their original seed funding while helping people start or expand a business. The NEDC gives back to the community by contrib-uting all administrative costs of community pro-gram. As well NEDC sponsors many events.
