It wasn’t just grunge, either; rappers turned serious, pop music was (and to an extent still is) formulaic banter. Country? Enough said. And jazzers are never supposed to have fun. So, what’s good-time Charlie to do? Enter San Diego-based punk-pop power trio Blink 182. Wielding one of the most potent forms of humor known to mankind— potty humor (admit it, you chuckle at inappropriate flatulence)—Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge, and Travis Barker quickly marked their territory on the leg...er…face of pop music. Their two 1998 tours were named Poo-Poo Pee-Pee and Race Around Uranus , respective ly , and their mega-breakthrough album was titled Enema of the State . The video for the first single, "What’s My Age Again," found the trio running naked throughout its duration with a healthy amount of attention placed on adult film star Janine. For their second single, "All the Small Things," the trio spoofed the resurgent, highly popular boy band craze. And to cap things off, they choreographed a bevy of dwarves into their performance of this anything-but-diminutive hit at the MTV 2000 Video Music Awards. Musically, Blink 182 have mastered the art of the "hook"—catchy, melodic parts that are nearly irresistable to the primal dance urges within each of us. In "Small Things," guitarist DeLonge uses a simple I–V–IV–V progression pounded out in a driving eighth-note rhythm to draw you in, and once your foot starts tapping, all bets are off—it’s time to have fun! ALL THE SMALL THINGS

Words and Music by Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppusfrom Enema of the State (MCA, 1999)

After the grunge rock scene took its hold on the airwaves in the early

’90s, it seemed that everyone forgot that music is supposed to be

fun. It wasn’t just grunge, either; rappers turned serious, pop music

was (and to an extent still is) formulaic banter. Country? Enough said.

And jazzers are never supposed to have fun. So, what’s good-time

Charlie to do? Enter San Diego-based punk-pop power trio Blink 182.

Wielding one of the most potent forms of humor known to mankind—

potty humor (admit it, you chuckle at inappropriate flatulence)—Mark

Hoppus, Tom DeLonge, and Travis Barker quickly marked their

territory on the leg...er…face of pop music. Their two 1998 tourswere named Poo-Poo Pee-Pee and Race Around Uranus , respectively,

and their mega-breakthrough album was titled Enema of the State .

The video for the first single, "What’s My Age Again," found the trio

running naked throughout its duration with a healthy amount of

attention placed on adult film star Janine. For their second single, "All the Small Things," the trio spoofed the resurgent,

highly popular boy band craze. And to cap things off, they choreographed a bevy of dwarves into their performance of this

anything-but-diminutive hit at the MTV 2000 Video Music Awards.

Musically, Blink 182 have mastered the art of the "hook"—catchy, melodic parts that are nearly irresistable to the primal

dance urges within each of us. In "Small Things," guitarist DeLonge uses a simple I–V–IV–V progression pounded out in a
