A. Review of tenses

SimplePresent present perfectpreterit plus perfect

ContinuousPresent present perfectpreterit plus perfect

So, just the two presents today.

The present simple :

What you have to remember is:

➢ when you conjugative in negative or in interrogative form you use the auxillary DO and DOES.➢ when you use it in affirmative form, there is no auxilliary. The verb may have to take -s or -es

Present continuous :

whatever the form (affirmative, negative or interrogative form) you will always have BE + -ing as an ending of the verb

Examples:

I go.He goes.Do we go?They don't go.

I am going.He is going.Are they leaving?We aren't coming.

I. Present simple

When do you use one tense or the other? We use present simple every time something is recurrent, for habbits, when you give your opinion (because normally you don't change opinion all nights) and to talk about a state.

a. Main meanings

1. Objective facts, scientific observationsWater boils at 212°FThe report indicates that too much MP3 listening can cause deafness.

2. Opinions, tastesShe likes rock’n’roll musicHe usually votes left-wing

3. Habits, recurrent actionsEverytime something is reccurent, for habbits

They take a shower every dayThe surgery opens at 9 AM

4. States, status quoTo talk about a state

Dr lives in Cambridge

Especially, you have to be careful about « Time markers » because when you do exercises (for example) you will easily recognize the tense that you are suppose to use from the time marker

Time markers: always, often, sometimes, usually, generally, habitually, never, every -day/week/month/yearIt is a fact.

b. Special use

Also, you use present simple with verbs that don't have an affinity with an other tense like continous. In these case you will use present simple.

Non-progressive verbs1. verbs of perception (see, hear, small, taste) usually you can use the present simple or most usually you

use CANThis room smells. Can you hear this beep?

2. verbs of mind (agree, refuse, insist, advise, apologise etc...)What do you suggest?

c. Pronunciation of present simple

IZ S Z

s, x the sound « x »s, ʃ (meaning the letters sh) t ʃ(the letter ch)prunonced as « IZ »

divorcespurchasesassessesboxesbrushes

after the letters p,t,k the sound F you will say « Sssss »

cookscoughs (=tousser)developsgetslikeslaughs because the letter gh as pronuounced as the letter F/the sound « F »popssmokesstimulatesthinkstreatswrites

Vowel by default you will use it and you will say « Zzzz »

complies (because it finished with a vowel sound)decidesdiscoversdisregardsmailsmarriesphonesqualifiesscanssmellsstudiesx-rays

II. Present continuous

a. Main meanings

To draw somebody attention on a specific situation etc..1. On-going present time World population is increasing2. Temporary actions At the moment, she is working in Sydney3. Actions happening now Be quick ! The child's bleeding

Time markers: now, at present, at the moment, currently, temporarily, today

b. Special use

For exasperation Gael is usually patient and easy-going but in this situation he is being very impatient.I'm always losing things !

Sometime present simple with some types of verbs, they could have different meanings you use it as a simple or in the continuous

III. Present simple or present continuous?

Look for different meanings

(1) to have

He has a powerful Mercedes → so « has » here means « possesses »We're having lamb for dinner → it means « we are going to eat »So for a same verb, two differents meanings according to the aspect

(2) to think

I think cigarettes have a bad effect on health → think means « I give my opinion »I'm thinking about Mrs Harris who is sick in bed → je pense à quelqu'un « I've thought to somebody »

(3) verbs of the senses

I sometimes see double → means that I have sometimes visual problems / J'ai un problème occulaireI'm seeing my G.P. Tomorrow → it means I have an appointment with my G.P. / J'ai pris rendez-vous avec

G.P. means general practitioner

IV. Spelling of present continuous

• Monosyllables ending in CVC (consonant vowel consonant)He is running a hospital

• PolysyllablesThey are beginning next weekShe is listeningHe is developing a new project

NB. Verbs ending in -el or -al (to travel, to dial, to cancel)He is dialing 999 (US) / He is dialling 999 (GB)

Parfois on double la consonne: runnig, beginning...''Listen'' a l'accent tonique sur la première syllabe, on ne double pas la consonne.

ANGLAIS - Review of tenses - Staff - Survival kit - Figures

Stress pattern: nous utiliserons des ronds pour exprimer l'intonationIl's just a little more difficult because stress pattern of the world is Ooo

If I take this example of begin: I need to double the last consonant oOIf I say for example listen, it has the stress of the first symbole Oo , there is no doubling on the last consonant.''develop'' oOo so we can not double the last ''p''

begin : to double the last « n » oOlisten : no doubling X Oo
