Dear NYCPS Member,
I am pleased to present to you our 2016 Annual Report, which highlights many of the successful
programs and events NYCPS held over the course of the year.
2016 was a busy year for NYCPS with continuing commitment to efficiency and transparency in our
organizational and financial structure and an increased number of events and member benefits.
As we promised last year, we have continued to develop new programs and events as well as update
our annual offerings. Our Annual Meet & Greet in 2016 was one of our largest ever, the 2016 Annual
Meeting addressed the future of addiction psychiatry, and we held our first Fellowship Night in many
years with representatives from 24 local programs coming out to speak with residents. We also
covered important topics in the field with panels on physician suicide, domestic violence, and emerging
drugs of abuse. Our training resources in E-prescribing and Planning for Emergencies in Private Practice
proved very popular and we had some great opportunities for fun including a Bowling Night and first-
ever Holiday Party to close out the year.
As always, our staff and leadership remain dedicated to responsible financial budgeting and planning
and I am happy to report that once again we have a healthy financial report (you can view more details
in our Financial Outlook (page 13). We remain strongly committed to increasing revenue for the
Society without increasing your dues and our successful year in 2016 leaves us well poised to continue
even more program development in 2017, providing additional services to our members without
raising costs.
So at the close of such a successful year, what can you expect from us in 2017? Expect great events
hosted by our active Committees with topics ranging from addressing the opioid crisis to perinatal
psychiatry to the latest updates in forensic psychiatry. Expect more mentoring and career development
opportunities, including a brand new program dedicated to getting residents and early-career
psychiatrists one-on-one career and CV guidance. Expect to be kept up to date on important
developments both locally and nationally through our monthly E-News, Twitter feed, Facebook page,
and continually updated website. Expect more networking opportunities and social events for
opportunities to meet your colleagues from all over the city. Most importantly, expect to get even
more out of your NYCPS membership- because we are committed to helping you do just that!
I look forward to the continued growth of the Society and I encourage you all to consider joining a
Committee and attending NYCPS events. As always, we welcome your suggestions and input on how
we can best serve you. Remember, our growth is supported by the contributions of our members!
Sincerely, Meagan O’Toole, J.D. Executive Director

ECP Committee
The Early Career Psychiatrists Committee held an especially powerful panel entitled, Physician Suicide:
Addressing the Crisis. The event was organized by Dr. Anna Costakis, as well as the two ECP Committee
Co-Chairs, Drs. Shervin Shadianloo and Lesha Shah. A panel of experts spoke on the rising crisis of
physician and trainee suicide in NYC and nationally. It also included a clip from the thought provoking
documentary, “Do No Harm.”

Residents’ Committee NYCPS held its first Fellowship Night in many years. Spearheaded by residents, the night brought together fellowship programs from across the NYC area, including: Addiction, Child & Adolescent, Consultation/Liaison, Forensic, Geriatric, and Public programs. The event was set up as an informal fair where residents could walk around to various tables and learn about specific fellowship opportunities as well as hear more on the benefits of fellowship in general. We are already making plans for how to improve and expand the event for next year.
2016 Fellowship Night (from left to right) Executive Council Member, Dr. Laura Erickson-Schroth, Residents’ Committee Fellowship Night Organizer, Dr. Bem Atim, and 2016 NYCPS President, Dr. Jose Vito
Women’s Committee Under the leadership of Dr. Shakibaie-Smith, the Women’s Committee held its first event, a panel on intimate partner violence named Does Love Hurt? Intimate Partner Violence: What Practitioners Need to Know. The event was a successful and members indicated they would like to attend future events on similar topics.

PROGRAMS & GRANTS
A few years ago, the Executive Council made a conscious effort to direct more funding toward
programing each year. As a result, NYCPS has been able to offer a steady increase in both quality and
quantity of events and programs, to the direct benefit of members. The chart below indicates the
program expenses by year and details the events and programs offered over the past five years.

NYCPS Website
In 2016, NYCPS launched our new website, www.nycpsych.org. The website allows members to view
the organization’s calendar, register for events, get important updates, discover grant and award
opportunities, read and place classified ads, and learn more about what membership has to offer.
Digital Magazine & E-News Blasts
In 2015, we transitioned from a printed newsletter into a fully enhanced, interactive digital magazine
published online twice annually. The new format allows us to expand the content, add photos from
NYCPS events, include interactive media and direct links, and has cut costs drastically. Members are
encouraged to submit articles or special announcements for publication. Our magazine contains
articles written primarily by NYCPS members and staff, and regular features include a letter from the
President, a spotlight piece recognizing an NYCPS member for their achievements or special work in
psychiatry, updates on NYCPS Committees and events, book and movie reviews, classifieds, and ads.
We have also added recurring sections on topics our members have expressed interest in, like how-tos
for technology.
Our monthly E-Blasts contain timely news in smaller doses. We highlight the NYCPS calendar of events
and include a section on upcoming deadlines for APA/general psychiatry awards, grants, etc. In
addition, we feature the top news stories related to psychiatry from important media outlets. We have
also added a dedicated block, “Member Benefit of the Month,” that highlights an APA benefit.
E-Prescribing Information Session
On January 10, 2016, NYCPS held its second E-Prescribing Information Session at the New York
Academy of Medicine to assist members in understanding the requirements for the e-prescribing
mandate. The information session included a presentation on the legal ins and outs of e-Rx by Rachel
Fernbach, Esq., NYSPA Deputy Director and Assistant General Counsel; a panel of psychiatrists,
including Drs. David Brody, Ira Bergman, and Aaron Patterson, already familiar with the practical day to
day aspects of e-prescribing; and vendor information.
Minority Mentorship Network (MMN) Program
In September 2016, the Network hosted Life After Residency at Lenox Hill Hospital. During this small
event, residents and ECPs had the opportunity to discuss their careers and ask for advice from
experienced psychiatrists in an informal but structured format.
NYCPS members started the Minority Mentorship Network in 2013 to promote and support residents
and early career psychiatrists of underrepresented groups by offering them more opportunities for
mentorship. NYCPS continues to work with a group of residents to strengthen our Minority Mentorship
10
Network, which connects MURs, RFMs, and ECPs with established psychiatrists to foster mentoring
relationships.

Research Grants for Medical Students
In 2015, the NYCPS Research Committee spearheaded a program to award grant funding to medical
students who submit their research proposals. The purpose of these grants is to cover gaps of $100-
$2,000 in funding for medical students’ psychiatry-related research. This grant makes NYCPS and APA a
resource early in the careers of soon-to-be psychiatrists and strengthens our relationship with
potential members. In 2016, we awarded grants to two medical students in the NYC area, and we
continue to take applications for grants on a rolling basis throughout the year.

ANNUAL EVENTS
Legislative Breakfast On February 21, 2016, the New York County Psychiatric
Society, the New York County Medical Society and the New
York Council on Child & Adolescent Psychiatry held its
second joint Legislative Breakfast at the New York Academy
of Medicine. The Legislative Breakfast is an annual event
that brings together members with elected representatives,
directors of state and city agencies, and academic leaders to
discuss important issues affecting the field of psychiatry.
Legislators in attendance included NYS Senator Liz Krueger,
Assembly Member Richard Gottfried, Assembly Member
Robert Rodriguez, Manhattan Borough President
Gale Brewer, and Council Member Mathieu Eugene.
NYCPS Annual Meeting & Awards Dinner Each year the Society holds an Annual Meeting for members and their guests that includes a formal dinner and presentations by experts on important and relevant topics in the field of psychiatry. The 2016 Annual Meeting was held at the New York Academy of Medicine and featured a panel discussion on Addiction in the 2020s. NYCPS President, Dr. Jose Vito, also took time to recognize all the hard work and dedication of several of the organization’s Past Presidents. The NYCPS Resident Research Awards ceremony is a regular program feature at the Annual Meeting. The presentation recognizes all resident members who submitted abstracts, and awards the top three placements with honoraria and plaques. 2016 winners included Dr. Michael Avissar (1st place), Dr. Katlyn Nemani (2nd place), and Dr. Li Shuang (3rd place). The Ivan Goldberg Outstanding Service Award commemorates the unique and novel contributions made by the late Dr. Goldberg to the field of psychiatry. Each year, the Ivan Goldberg Award Committee solicits nominations from psychiatrist members who demonstrate the pioneering spirit of Dr. Goldberg’s work; to make psychiatric knowledge accessible to all. The winner is announced and presented with an award at the Annual Meeting. The 2016 Ivan Goldberg Award recipient was Dr. Grant Brenner.
Meet & Greet Held at the 79th Street Boat Basin, the New York County Psychiatric Society’s Annual Meet & Greet is a
social event that gives members a chance to meet the Executive Council as well as committee chairs, to
network and socialize with each other, and to discuss ideas with fellow psychiatrists in an enjoyable
12
and casual setting. The event is among the most popular events the Society hosts and the 2016 Meet &
Greet had the highest attendance to date! Members had fun engaging in a friendly competition and
raffle to win prizes such as an iPad mini, a Freudian Gift Basket (provided by Platinum Partner, PRMS),
and gift cards to popular retailers.
