Third Grade Hikers... Mr. Mitchell took third grade hiking during PE class last week. We found two different types of animal tracks in the woods...Moose and Coyote!!
Dreaming of bare feet on warm earth, buzzing insects and plants to tend... The days are getting longer and now is the time to plan and dream about what to put in our - your! - school garden. We have some traditional crops we plant and produce but if anyone in the community - students and families - would like to make some requests or suggestions, we can try to accommodate your ideas! And of course, we'd always welcome your help "on the ground". Just a reminder: lower maintenance and relatively pest- free crops are generally better in a garden with no live-in farmer :). Please provide your input to: [email protected] or send in a note with your student/s. Happy Spring!
AVS Featured Teacher The Wildcat News will be featuring a new teacher in
every edition. This week we would like to share more
about Ms. Miki!
Miki Glasser joined the AVS staff this year as the art
teacher. She returned home to Maine after a decade
teaching and making art in New Orleans, Louisiana.
She is thrilled to have landed at Appleton Village
School, which she attended as an eighth-grade
student! Miki also has a ceramics studio in
Lincolnville. Find her ceramic work online
at mikiglasserart.com. Miki holds a master’s degree in
art and art education from Teachers College,
Columbia University.
SIMPLY SECOND and FABULOUS FIRST Wednesday, March 3rd we celebrated 100 days of school in our math class! Simply Second created a "100" item sculpture with toothpicks and marshmallows. Fabulous First created a "100" item sculpture with two different size cups. The students created the sculptures by adding onto each other's creations while in complete silence! They all did a beautiful job creating and building together while quietly observing the progress of our sculptures. WAY TO GO MAGNIFICENT MATHEMATICIANS!!!

4th Grade News
In Social Studies students are reading biographies and collecting facts about some important people in American history: Rosa Parks; Martin Luther King, Jr.; Abraham Lincoln; Thomas Jefferson; Nellie Bly; Jacob Riis; Susan B. Anthony; and Elizabeth Cady Stanton are the people we are focusing on.
A special thanks to Miss Audrey for getting us started with Bal-A-Vis-X this week. We look forward to continuing this activity every Monday afternoon.

Drama Club The drama game we played this day is "Who Am I?"
Middle School Parent/Teacher Conferences The middle school team truly values the insights parents provide in setting goals for each of our students, and we encourage all parents to participate in our upcoming Spring conferences on Zoom. These conferences will be from Noon until 6:40 pm on Thursday, March 25th. Each conference is limited to 15 minutes. As each teacher has a limited number of slots available, parents are encouraged to sign up early with their child’s homeroom teacher using the sign-up link on P/T Fast (communicated in the Wildcat News and on Seesaw) to reserve a time. While our schedule does allow for parents with specific academic concerns to meet with whatever teacher is necessary, we encourage parents to sign up with only their child’s homeroom teacher for an overall picture of their student’s progress.
Middle School ELA Update 6th grade is putting their creativity to the test and wrapping up the character monologues this week. They will be ready to be shared shortly. They are a hoot and a half to be sure! 7th grade is continuing to explore the various nuances of the Holocaust. Novels are being read, discussions are being had, and students are working on communicating their learning and understanding with the first part of their multi-genre project. Project 1 is focused on informational writing. Students have chosen to write diary entries, newspaper articles, ABC books, and more for this first genre project. Project 2 is kicking off with an opinion piece around the history of antisemitic behavior and the persecution of the Jewish people. 8th grade has been studying rhetorical appeals, ethos, pathos, and logos, in ads to learn about techniques used in persuasive presentations. This is the first step in our Leaders of Change unit. We will be heading into speech analysis next. March Books are on their Way... All middle school students will be receiving their next round of independent reading books. For the last 7 months, all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students have chosen a book from the Scholastic Book Club website. That's 7 great books for each middle school student! The conversations about books chosen and what's happening in each book have sparked multiple students to explore new genres, authors, and topics. However, if we're going to meet our goal of providing books for students until June, then we need YOUR help! Please consider sending in a small donation to help purchase books for the next three months. $5, $10, $25... Every little bit helps! Send checks, made out to Scholastic Book Club, to Ms. Billings to be applied toward book purchase. Thank you from every AVS middle school student! Donations Needed to Continue the Reading Success!

Ms. Scott // Sunrise
Are you ready to jump into spring? Would you like a new mask? Are you ready to take part in a challenge? If you answered “yes” to any or all of these questions, then let’s get started. Who can participate? Any Appleton Village School student What do I have to do? All you have to do is write a persuasive piece or letter telling me why you would like to receive a new mask. What am I looking for? A display of pictures of just some of the masks that you could choose from. One could be yours. Look for it! Look for it! Where? On the small bulletin board in the cafeteria/gymnasium When do I complete this? Anytime between now and April vacation How will this work? 1st - See Ms. Scott for your paperwork 2nd - Write your persuasive piece or letter 3rd - Return your written piece to Ms. Scott Have Fun!
When kindness becomes part of your classroom culture, it becomes a natural part of the day; not something extra that you have to fit in.

Dear School Leaders, It's that time again! We're gearing up for this year's Hannaford Helps Schools program and are excited to partner with you. The 2021 program will run from March 14 through May 29. Here at Hannaford, we work hard to have as many relevant participating items as possible so it's easy to support your local schools while shopping for the items you love. Please keep an eye out for your school packet within the next couple of weeks. We'll be sending along more emails with links to digital resources and more information. Since the program's inception, we have raised nearly $17 million to help local schools reach their fundraising goals. We look forward to another successful program! Thanks, Angela Uviasah Hannaford Marketing Specialist [email protected]
