April 2019 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE WOW!! Has it been a really busy month or is it just me. We started off with 12 club members heading out for Midnight at the Oasis for a great show. It was fun to be back on the road in our car with the Gang. Then the club meeting and the STREAK meeting it seems like there is always something to do. Next we attended a Memorial service at Miramar National Cemetery for Sergeant Mike Boehmke. Mike had many different aspects to his life- cars, work, fishing, dogs and family to name a few. I think the note at the bottom of the memorial program said a lot “LOVED BY DOGS…FEARED BY FISH”. Next up was our TECH DAY at JBA Speed Shop. This day was over the top. It started with donuts and coffee then a 3 hour tour and lecture and then hot dogs and more. Lots of talk about cam lift, injectors and timing. The highlight for most of us was when Bob Kerns put his 56 Ford truck on the dyno. The coyote engine pulled to 6500 rpms and 420 hp. Jay and Vicky went out of their way to show us a good time and we appreciate it. We also attended a very nice memorial service and reception for Helen Griffin at her church. She and George Griffin were high school sweethearts and they reconnected about three years ago and were married after losing track of each other for so many years. Thanks to all of the club members that attended either or both of these two members services. By the time you read this some of our members will already be at Del Mar setting up the Goodguys show. If you are attending the show and have not signed up to help please do so by calling Debra McDowell or John Kowalski. Remember this event show cases our club to the rest of the U.S. and through the internet to the rest of the world. Wear your colors and enjoy the show. The STREAK is just a month away. Bill still needs help with a few jobs. Hopefully some of you will contact Bill and offer your help. As a club we will spending at least 10 days together while attending and working the Goodguys show and the STREAK. Let’s enjoy our friendship and our hot rods, after all that is why we belong to the OVER THE HILL GANG, SAN DIEGO, right! Hope to see you ALL at the meeting. Joe, President

Their leader gave us some of the history on the sea cadet program and the importance of it. Jay Bittle, owner of JBA speed shop, came to personally invite us to the tech day he had planned for us on Sat., March 23. Jay said JBA opened in 1985 and is one of the few, or the only surviving speed shops in San Diego. Jay’s son just opened a tire shop called Meltdown Tires. They can say they now do it all for the classic, muscle and late model super cars. Every month on the 2nd Sunday they have coffee, cars and donut event. Joe Pifer announced, “The person selected for the perpetual trophy has been in the club for a long time, a charter member, he could be called a Fireman because he has filled every job in the club many times. He has been president many times and Streak chairman many times and is currently your Streak chairman. The award goes to Bill Hogue.” He received a plaque, name bar and $50.00 towards dinner. A former member of the club donated (2) 25 anniversary letterman jackets to the club. They were raffled off tonight and the winners were Carl Atkinson and Drew Mraz. BIO OF A CLUB MEMBER

APRIL 2019

WHO: VINCE YAMASAKI WHAT YOU MAY KNOW: Vince is probably one of the best known members of our club. He has attended many, many car shows both local and out of town. Vince joined the Club in August 1988 which means he has been a member for 31 years. One year later he was elected president and served as president again in 1994. He has been on the STREAK committee since he first joined the club and has served in numerous other club positions including Vice President and 5th Board member. WHAT YOU MIGHT KNOW: Vince went to the STREAK in 1988 prior to getting a hot rod and becoming a club member in August. He started with a 23 t-bucket, traded the “T” and Linda’s 56 Ford Victoria for a 1950 Ford truck that was sold later and went to Japan, then bought a 27 Ford steel Tub which he drove everywhere (Vegas, Laughlin, Yuma, Bakersfield and Big Bear and it didn’t even have a top). He wanted more comfort so he bought a 1947 Mercury convertible sight unseen that he found in Street Scene classified. Former club member Chuck Price worked for the local Ford dealer in Coeur d’ Alene so he checked it out for him. He has been driving it ever since. SOMETHING YOU MAY NOT KNOW: Vince worked for FedMart for 17 years. He started in the warehouse, moved up to manager, then Buyer of Toys, books and small appliances. He started his auto detailing business “Wax-On-Wax-Off” in 1981. He has been a great friend to all of us. He is now retired and is a farmer in Ramona. Please make sure you thank him for all he has done for our club. Joe p

Message from Bev Boehmke & Family

“A Bunch of Thanks to All of You….to each and all of you, our family thanks you so much for your cards, love & support! Mike would be so proud!” Bev also sent in a copy of a heartfelt letter she received from one of Mike’s co-workers at the Port District. He worked with Mike for 26 years and said he looked forward to Monday mornings when he would hear about Mike’s fishing tournaments, RVing and camping outings, hot rod meets with the Over the Hill Gang or the infamous Model A project, and he will always remember Mike “with a smile”. Thanks to all the Gang members who came out to Mike Boehmke services at Miramar. It was well attended which shows how much Mike was liked and respected. The procession by Final Honor made it even more special. As the minister said at his services, Mike was a breath of Life to all who knew him.
