morning worship services beginning at 9:30 a.m.

---- April Milestone Anniversaries----• Gilda & Jacob Halpern………..........................…..68 years• Linda & Stuart Goldberg……..........................…..54 years• Ellen & Larry Kozlove…………..........................….35 years• Amanda & Scott Miller………...........................….30 years

Anniversaries are listed for first and every five years after that. Additionally, all anniversaries exceeding 50 years are listed. If your “Milestone Anniversary” is not listed, please call the synagogue office at 458-5359 and provide them with your anniversary date. We look forward to celebrating with you!

The AJ Office now has the capability to save dollars for our shul by emailing members’ billing statements, rather than paying postage to mail them. For AJ to do this, we need to have accurate email addresses for all members. If you are currently receiving our weekly emails, we have your email address. If you are not receiving our weekly emails, we need to know your current email address. If you prefer to receive your billing statement by snail mail, we need to know that too. You may set your AJ billing preferences at www.adathjeshurun.com/preferences. You may also call Holly Southwick at 649-8135 or email her at [email protected] to let her know your preferences. If you prefer, you can send in the form below. Thank you in advance for helping AJ to spend your dollars wisely!

ADATH JESHURUN ANNUAL MEETING

To sponsor a tax-deductible Kiddush lunch at AJ, please contact Molly Evancho at [email protected] or call 458-5359. You can also obtain more information

on the AJ website at www.adathjeshurun.com/kiddushsponsor. The Congregation gratefully acknowledges the generosity of the following for their sponsorship of the Shabbat Kiddush lunches:

• April 29, 2017 – Sponsored by Shari “George” Polur and Michael Gold in honor of the Bar Mitzvah of Ian Polur Gold.

As Passover approaches, we are reminded of the importance of traditions and rituals. Most of us have fond memories of seders over the years. The attendees changed over time, depending on what stage of your life you were in, however, ,the essential components never change- four questions, horseradish, singing, wine and matzah. At one point, you are the youngest asking the four questions, and guaranteeing

you’ll be in Jerusalem next year. Before you know it, you are the oldest wondering whether you’ll even be here next year! One of my fondest memories was when I was a medical resident at Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburgh. It was Passover, and we had a lot of house officers who were Jewish and away from home or too busy to get home. We all got together and decided to have a seder at whoever’s apartment was the largest. Since everyone came from different backgrounds, there was English, Hebrew and broken Hebrew, but it didn’t matter. There was wine and matzah, and the youngest asked the four questions. Everyone participated. My future wife, Marylee was there. In fact, we have been spending Passover together longer than we have been married!

With that in mind, the Board of Trustees is no longer involved with building and renovation. The hardware is in place. We are now turning our attention to our congregants through two initiatives with the goal of engaging everyone in our community. The Sustainability Grant which we received from the JHFE, is a project in community-building. It is a campaign to learn what initiatives will motivate our members to take ownership of their congregation. We are

canvasing our membership in small groups to see what you want out of our shul. The goal is to create opportunities which will generate memories similar to those I have of seders past. This project is as important to the future of our congregation as the renovation was ten years ago. I will continue to report to you as the findings evolve.

The other major initiative is the Life and Legacy Project. The Harold Grinspoon Foundation has provided the JCL with a grant to have more Jewish people throughout the country leaving legacy gifts. Most of the local congregations and Jewish organizations are participating in this program. The concept is that when you no longer need your money, there are ways you can be remembered and serve the institutions that were an important part of your life. You will hear more about this in the future.

These programs are geared to the future. As far as the present, our AJ Preschool continues to shine! LBSY has had a good turnaround, and feedback from students and parents is positive. Not surprising, our snow-removal costs came in way under budget! We are gradually transitioning to LED lights at a high short-term cost, but with expected savings in electricity in the future. We are also beginning a major project to start replacing our 60-year-old windows that weren’t replaced during the renovation. Again, high costs now, but savings in heating and cooling costs down the road.

Please join us this year for AJ’s Annual Community Passover Seder on April 10th. I hope everyone has a good Passover!

Please let Deborah know if you would like a book ordered for you at $10.00. The Amazon customer review that follows gives a glimpse into this wonderful read! “Amy Gottlieb’s debut novel has burrowed into my head. Her storylines are intriguing and complex; her characters are unlike any others; the entire work is deep yet massively readable. It’s true value is as a genuine literary work with universal resonance. Highly recommended for anyone wanting deep engagement with plot and people. I am most eager for her next novel!”

GET READY FOR PASSOVER

The first Seder takes place this year on the evening of Monday, April 10th. The AJ website has complete

instructions on getting your home ready for Passover. The guidelines may be found by visiting: www.adathjeshurun.com/passover.

SELL YOUR CHAMETZ

Since it is prohibited to possess chametz on Passover, any chametz left un-disposed must be

sold to a non-Jewish person. All such chametz, as well as all chametz utensils that were not thoroughly cleaned, should be stored away. The storage area should be locked or taped shut for the duration of the holiday. Since there are many legal intricacies involved in this sale, a rabbi acts as the agent both to sell the chametz to the non-Jewish person on the morning before Passover, and to buy it back the evening after Passover ends. The form below can be completed and submitted to the AJ office by April 7, 2017. This form can also be completed online through the AJ website at www.adathjeshurun.com. Go to the “Jewish Resources & Learning Tab”, and click on “Passover Information.”

Sitter service is available only by advance reservation on non-Shabbat days by contacting Barb Embry at 458-5359 or [email protected].

Delegation of Power to Sell Chametz

I the undersigned, fully empower and permit Rabbi Robert B. Slosberg to act in my place and stead, and on my behalf to sell all chametz possessed by me, knowingly or unknowingly as defined by Jewish Law.

Rabbi Robert B. Slosberg also has the full power and right to act as he deems fit and proper in accordance with all the details of the Bill of Sale used in the transaction to sell all my chametz, as provided herein.

Please enter your personal information below. Use the address in which the chametz is located.

MARCH ADULT EDUCATION

AJ CEMETERY INFORMATION

HEADSTONE CLEANING AVAILABLE IN THE AJ CEMETERY

Deborah Slosberg, Director of Louisville Melton was invited to speak during the “Spotlight on Excellence” session at the International Directors Conference of the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning recently in Chicago. In 2013, Deborah restarted Louisville Melton after several

years without a local franchise. Through anecdotes, she painted a picture of the Louisville Melton culture – the closeness and camaraderie among students of all ages and backgrounds, between faculty and students, and the quality of the teachers who facilitate the students’ encounters with ancient and modern Jewish texts. This year, Louisville Melton is offering 16 courses with a student body of 114 students, many of whom are enrolled in multiple classes, totaling 220 class registrations. To learn more about the Melton program, contact Deborah at [email protected].

Now is the time to purchase gravesites in the AJ Cemetery. The current price of $3,025 per grave (which includes perpetual care) is good through June 30, 2017. Prices will increase on July 1, 2017. For more information on purchasing gravesites,

please contact Assistant Cemetery Warden, Steve Evans at 310-2900 or [email protected].

AJ has made arrangements with a local company to provide comprehensive headstone cleaning services. This company provides power-washing for headstones, foot stones and benches. Prices vary due to size. If you are interested in getting a quote to have this work done, please contact Laura Canfield in the AJ office at 458-5359 or [email protected].

Plantings at the AJ Cemetery may be arranged through the synagogue office. All cemetery plantings must be prepaid. As always, costs include the price of plants, the labor to plant them, as well as the irrigation and maintenance. For a timely, attractive planting, please complete this form and return it

with your check to the synagogue office by April 21, 2017. All orders will be planted by May 12th (weather permitting.)
