PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE SUMMER IS HERE!!!
There’s so much fun to be had…July 4th fireworks…Cookouts…Surf & Sand…Ice Cream…Boardwalk. Hope all of you have a safe summer with as much fun as you can handle and maybe a little relaxation thrown in there too!
We take a break from ASPE activities in the summer months, but there’s plenty to look forward. Look for more information about the Golf Outing, Convention in Chicago, and the Plumbing School in this newsletter. One thing to note is that we will not be having a technical meeting in September due to the timing of the Golf Outing and Convention.
A thank you goes out to Greg Shields with Victaulic for providing our chapter with the topic of “The Last 6 ft of Sprinkler Drops” at the May Technical Meeting. We really appreciate the time and effort it takes to present!
We have most of our Technical Meeting Topics/Speakers in place for the 2014-2015 year. Please let me know if your company has a great presentation and speaker for a specific topic. A sincere thank you to everyone that has provided me with contacts for technical speakers.

There are a few things in the IPC that have been bugging me lately. The first is the depth of cover for building sewer. For do-mestic water service it is fairly straight forward. For domestic water service it is 6 inches below the locality frost depth or a mini-mum 12 inches below grade.
The IPC section for building sewer leaves this number blank (to be filled in by the authority adopting
the code supposedly) but commentary goes on to explain that due to intermitted flow and the heat carried by the sewer to the surrounding soil that the typical range of cover depth for building sewer is from 6 to 18 inches. Personally I am uncomfortable with this being so open ended. At a minimum I like to design my building sewer to leave a structure with a minimum cover at or below the locality frost depth and at least a minimum of 18 inches. In my option,
this provides adequate freeze protection (since the majority of water sent down a typical building sewer is cold water) and physical protection (from digging, etc.) for the building sewer. I also use this guide line for building storm drainage. Obviously there will be other factors involved in determining the building sewer depth; foundations, footers, local codes, invert of the existing site sewer, etc. As an example, New Castle County, DE plumbing code modifies the Sewer Depth section of the IPC to read “Building sewers shall be a minimum of 30 inches below grade” which is the frost depth of the area. (Also lo-cal code may indicate the minimum cover for water services. NCC, DE specifies a minimum of 36 inches which is the frost depth plus the IPC 6 inches.)
The second thing that has been bugging me is mini-mum wet venting sizes. The IPC indicates that “The wet vent shall be of a minimum size as specified in

It's time once again to conclude another successful ASPE Philadelphia year and give way to the heat & humidity.
I want to thank the various Manufacturers & Representatives who participated in Table Top Presentation. Thanks to their support we had a Table Top Presenter at every technical meeting again this past year. This helps to cover some of the cost of the chapter, as well as providing an opportunity for the Presenter to speak before the Chapter to increased knowledge and awareness of the product being highlighted.
I want to thank those who supported our chapter via the Table Top Presentation and I strongly encour-age everyone to reach out for and support the products that helped us to have a successful year. If you don't recall, here are the product lines that were showcased at our Technical Meetings [listed in order of appearance] :
Prier Products Commercial Hydrants ; Josam Drainage Products ; Chicago Faucets ; NIBCO Lead Free ; Oasis Coolers & Bottle Filler ; DelanyProducts Flush Valves ; Kohler
We look forward to seeing everyone in the Fall.
Be sure to reserve a Table Top now for the 2014-2015 year. Opportunities are limited and going fast! Please email for more information. Your Philadelphia ASPE Affiliate Liaison, Alex Barbieri [email protected]

Table 909.3 based on the fixture unit discharge to the wet vent.” My question is does this mean all the fixtures that discharge to the wet vent or only the fixtures being wet vented? For example, take a typical commercial bathroom with a lavatory and a water closet for a total of 5 dfus (1 dfu for the lavatory and 4 dfus for the 1.28gpf water closet.) Typically the wet vent arrangement shall be through the waste of the lavatory. If all the fixtures discharging into the wet vent are considered in sizing (5 dfus) the minimum wet vent size would be 2 ½ inches. If only the fixtures being wet vent are considered (the water closet at 4 dfus) the minimum wet vent size is 2 inches. Though the commentary does not specifically clarify this, based on the figures in the IPC that detail wet venting my conclusion is that IPC means only the fixtures being wet vented. In my example only the water closet is being wet vented. The lavatory, even thought the its waste is part of the wet vent and receives it drainage, it is being dry or individually vented and therefore it’s dfu does not count in the wet vent sizing. So what are your thoughts?
