He passed away in 1917,and did not suffer the grief of seeing his country subjected tothe military dictatorship.Manuel Teixeira Gomes, a native of Portimão, where he wasborn in 1860, was President from 1923 to 1925. Heresigned in December 1925, that same month he left for anexile in Algiers, then French, and there he passed away in1941, without having ever returned to his homeland.Luckily, the cities of Horta and Portimão have preservedtheir memory by giving life to their homes and turning theminto museum-houses. PROJETO FOTOGRÁFICO LEVA BELEZA DOS AÇORES AO MUNDO

Este projetofotográfico documenta, de uma formaartística e envolvente, não só a belezaavassaladora da ilha mas também aessência da cultura e tradições açorianas,bem enraizadas nesta zona de São Miguel.Organizado pela Associação NorteCrescente, em parceria com a AFAA -Associação de Fotógrafos Amadores dosAçores-, e com o patrocínio do GovernoRegional dos Açores, o projeto tem comoprincipal objetivo promover pelafotografia as potencialidades do concelhode Ponta Delgada e levá-las além-fronteiras. Para isso, a Norte Crescenteestá a desenvolver diversas ações, entre asquais, uma exposição internacional.

PHOTOGRAPHIC PROJECT TAKESAZOREAN BEAUTY TO THEWORLD It’s called Retratos do Norte and its aim is toshow the world the unique characteristics ofthe North Coast of São Miguel Island, which,due to its magnificent landscapes, isconsidered to be one of the island’s mostbeautiful areas. This photographic projectdocuments in an artistic and involvingmanner not only the island’s breathtakingbeauty, but also the essence of the Azoreanculture and traditions, well rooted in this areaof São Miguel. Organized by Associação NorteCrescente, in a partnership with AFAA –Associação de Fotógrafos Amadores dosAçores (Association of Azorean AmateurPhotographers) -, and sponsored by theAzorean Regional Government, the project hasas its main objective to promote throughphotography, the potentialities of the PontaDelgada county and take them beyondborders. In order to do that, Norte Crescentewill implement several actions, among which,an international exhibition.

poesia, Isabel Pita “desenha”a beleza e a essência das ilhasdos Açores, no livro “Açores

(d)escritos”. De acordo com as suas

palavras, este livro é “umacoleção íntima de poemasque pretendem retratar abeleza das ilhas açorianas.

Cada ilha, um poema. Cadaverso, um pedaço de alma

insular.” Esta obra é dedicada aosAçores e aos Açorianos.Isabel Pita continua comvários projetos em menteque se seguirão uns após

outros, como sucedeu com olivro “É Carnaval, ninguémleva a mal” que conta com

poemas seus.Atualmente a viver e a

lecionar no Canadá, a autoracontinua com a alma e

coração na vila de Capelas,numa das zonas mais bonitas

de São Miguel.

THE AZORES DESCRIBED INPOETRY Through poetry,Isabel Pita, “draws” the

beauty and essence of theAzorean islands in her book

Açores (des)escritos.According to her, this book is

“an intimate collection ofpoems which aim at

portraying the beauty of theAzorean islands. Each island

has a poem. Each verse, a bitof the insular soul.”

This a book dedicated to theAzores and the Azoreans.

Isabel Pita has several projectsin mind that will follow others

such as her book Carnaval,ninguém leva a mal, which

includes poems by Isabel.Currently living and teaching

in Canada, the author still hasher heart and soul in the

village of Capelas, one of SãoMiguel’s most beautiful places.

o efeito de cuidar, com toda asegurança e bem-estar, dos nossos

passageiros.A Desfibrilhação Automática

Externa (DAE) é considerada, anível universal, como a técnica

mais eficaz de ressuscitação, nosprimeiros minutos após umaparagem cardíaca, através dautilização do aparelho DAE,

permitindo deste modo aumentara taxa de sobrevivência da vítima

em paragem cardiopulmonar. O uso do DAE a bordo é realizado

por tripulantes de cabine queforam qualificados pelo Centro deFormação Aeronáutica dos Açores,que é operado pela SATA. O CFAAministra cursos de suporte básicode vida e DAE, na qualidade deentidade formadora acreditada

pelo American Heart Association eINEM.

WE TAKE CARE OF YOU WITHKINDNESS AND EFFICIENCY – WE

ARE SATA! As from March 2011SATA has been licensed by the

Instituto Nacional de EmergênciaMédica INEM (National Institute ofMedical Emergency) for the use of

the Automated External Defibrillator(AED) on board our planes. Each

SATA plane is equipped with an AEDand with crew, which was trained

and specifically licensed to takecare, with all the safety and well

being, of our passengers.The Automated External

Defibrillator (AED) is considered, ata universal level, as the most

successful resuscitation technique byusing an AED in the first minutesafter a cardiac arrest, making it

possible to increase the survival rateof the victim having suffered a

cardiopulmonary arrest.The use of an AED on board is

conducted by cabin crew qualifiedat the Centro de Formação

Aeronáutica dos Açores (AzoresCenter for Aeronautic Training) thatis operated by SATA. The CFAA has

courses on basic life support andAED, and has been credited as atraining center by the American

Heart Association and INEM:

The Azores, to be moreprecise, Vila Franca do Campo islet(located off São Miguel) which embodiesthis return to its roots of a sport that wasborn 200 years ago in Hawaii. Thenovelty is the fact it’s the first time forwomen who are competing in theirsecond leg – from a height of 20 meters –after the beginning of the competition inTexas. Forthe travel writer Tiago Salazar the route ismore important than the destination. Strandedin Siberia, Tiago Salazar and his wife, fado singer CristinaBranco were starting to feel desperate. They had missed theTrans-Siberian train mid-way, after stopping to have lunch.On board were all their belongings: luggage, money, andpassports. The local taxi drivers asked for a lot of money forthe journey. Until a Russian put them suddenly inside anold Lada jeep and drove them for nearly 500 kilometersuntil the next station – without saying a word and withoutcharging anything. “It was the most incredible journey Imade” the writer recalls, marked by this good-will gesture.“The spirit of travels is also a laboratory of the character”.The story is an example of what Tiago Salazar looks for inhis travels. He is more interested in the route than in the des-tination. “The aim is not to arrive but to experience”. Terminado este ciclo, pegou no material que tinha embruto e deixou 700 páginas em cima da secretária doeditor. Os escritos, depois de trabalhados, dariam ori-gem ao que chama a sua trilogia não oficial: os liv-ros Viagens Sentimentais, As Rotas do Sonho e ACasa do Mundo. Os locais que serviram de matéria-prima são infindáveis e dispersos pelo planisfério:Cuba, Nepal, Quénia, Líbano, Goa, Caraíbas, China,Sri Lanka, Maurícias, Peru, Malásia, entre outros. Maisrecentemente, em maio, apresentou o livro de cró-nicas Quo Vadis, Salazar?, sobre o seu "exílio" naHolanda (reside em Amesterdão). E tem previsto aindapara este ano o lançamento da ficção O Lamento dosJuncos, passado em parte nos Açores. "Fazem partedo meu mapa sentimental."

The owner has lost the countof how many customers have been there for the first time.He tenderly recalls a 56-year-old German and a coupleof Russians with three kids, who had never eaten fish intheir entire lives and left in awe. Other customers areunconditional supporters of the good Azorean fish andwouldn’t mind eating it every day. “I have customers thatremain 2 weeks on the island and come here at dinnertime to have fish”, says Abel Cabral, adding, “fish istrendy”.

Theyare happier, more mature and creative thanever. They guarantee that the success they achieved is nota burden or in any way conditions them when it’s time toagain take a risk. To stop is to die and the Portuguese group,which started in the early 90s of the 20th century, is wellalive and kicking. In November they released their ninthCD, with the title Felicidade (Happiness). On the roadagain, they give us a new sonority, in which singer NunoGuerreiro presents “a more mature and experienced tone”.Manuel Paulo, one of the founders of the band, explainsthat despite the CD’s title, the themes of the songs arenot exactly happy. Happiness is instead present in all inthe musicians who are part of the “solid and mature” pro-ject of the Ala dos Namorados. In this new work, whichhe classifies as “worthy and fluid”, they try to tell the storyof what they are feeling now, opening the way for a “newmusical path”. They have numerous concerts on theiragenda. Travels by land or by air help provide new expe-riences and ideas for their next musical work.

Neste novo trabalho, que clas-sifica de “digno e fluido”, procuram contar a históriado que sentem agora, abrindo um “novo caminhomusical”. Concertos agendados existem vários. Until 1992, the Ala dos Namorados did not have a leadsinger. When Nuno Guerreiro joined the band it markeda new phase for the band and it definitely conquered thepublic. To this day Nuno Guerreiro’s vocal range astonis-hes us and his tone is unmistakable. The singer from theAlgarve started singing professionally at 19 in bars. Todayhe admits his voce has “changed naturally” over the years.Only his wish to innovate, to sing well and help the groupgrow remains the same. trip even more enjoyable, comfortable andrelaxed, especially when you have been sittingin a confined space for a long time. The tenexercises we recommend may be done insequence or alternatively, according to the skilland physical capacity of each passenger.

In order to assure the efficient coordination of actions among the

Houses of the Azores and between them and the Autonomous

Region of the Azores, the World Council of Houses of the Azores

(CMCA) was created back in 1997. This Council has been

meeting on a yearly basis ever since.

Considering all of this, we would like to introduce SATA

passengers to the 14 Houses of the Azores spread throughout

Now, in these pages, we stress and pay tribute to several Azorean

institutions whose mission is bringing Azoreans and Azorean

descendants together by promoting our culture. The action taken

by these institutions is essential for projecting the Region beyond

our borders. These institutions are the Houses of the Azores.

Some of these houses were created over 50 years ago, and

materialize the soul of the Azores in the Azorean communities

living outside the islands, whether in mainland Portugal, Canada,

USA, Brazil or Uruguay.

gathering areas for Azorean communities to state their cultural values.

O patacho Carolina partiu da cidade do Porto nosinícios de Julho rumo à Nova Escócia carregado desal, uma das tradicionais exportações portuguesaspara o continente norte-americano. A bordo, regis-tado como “sobrecarga”, seguia também Antero deQuental, passageiro fortuito de uma rota mercante queo conduziria a Halifax. Esta cidade portuária do nor-deste atlântico, fundada em 1749 por EdwardCornwallis, vivia então um momento de viragem his-tórico. ANTERO DE QUENTAL IN HALIFAXOne of the most intriguing episodes of Antero de Quental’sbiography is the boat journey which took him to NorthAmerica in the summer 1869. Although he himself refersto this periplus in his Carta Autobiográfica a WilhelmStorck (Biographic Letter to Wilhelm Storck), nothing isclear about the details and reasons that took him to setoff in such a journey. Some years after his death, whichas is known, occurred in Ponta Delgada on September 11th1891, the captain of the boat on which Antero traveled,Joaquim Negrão, gave António Arroyo an interview aboutthe incidents which took place during this transatlanticjourney, later published under the title A Viagem de Anterode Quental à América do Norte (Antero de Quental’s

Esta belíssimaedição de Poe, autor que Antero não só leu como tra-duziu e adaptou, é uma das poucas manifestaçõestangíveis da sua viagem à América do Norte e, feliz-mente, ainda hoje se encontra conservada naBiblioteca Pública e Arquivo Regional de PontaDelgada, que integra no seu valioso acervo a biblio-teca particular do poeta açoriano.Ao folhear as páginas deste livro Antero recordaria,talvez com saudade, o aroma balsâmico dos pinhei-ros da Nova Escócia e o encanto sereno e doce deHalifax coberta pela luz do Verão, que o seu amigoEça de Queirós tão bem soube descrever nas páginasdo In Memoriam:“... e aí, um domingo, tem uma visão que nunca esque-ce, a de uma cidade puritana e silenciosa, como adorme-cida no Senhor, toda de tijolo cor de rosa sob um céu corde pérola. Quantas vezes Antero me contava dessa pie-dosa e suave cidade, e do longo apetite que ela repenti-namente lhe deu de quietação eterna”.

Brunswick and Nova Scotia. On disembarking in Halifax,Antero was treading the recently established Canadiannation, which in August 1869 welcomed Queen Victoria’sson, Arthur, Duke of Connaught, and was decked outwith its best colors.Not very prone to parties and mundane events, Antero deQuental took refuge aboard and only after the Britishprince having left for Montreal did he decide to explorethe city’s streets and stores, where he bought a book ofpoems by Edgar Allen Poe; on its cover page can be readin a hand-written faded annotation – “Halifax – 19thAugust 1869”. This beautiful Poe edition, an authorAntero not only read but also translated and adapted, isone of the few tangible manifestations of his journey toNorth America and, fortunately, to this day it is preser-ved in the Public Library and Ponta Delgada RegionalArchive, which owns in its valuable collection, the Azoreanpoet’s private library.Flipping through the pages of this book, Antero would laterreminisce, maybe with nostalgia, the balsamic odor of theNova Scotia pine trees and the serene and sweet charmof Halifax covered by the summer light, which his friendEça de Queirós managed to convey so well in the pagesof his In Memoriam:“…and there, one Sunday, you have a vision you willnever forget, that of a puritan and silent city, as sleepingwith the Lord, all in prink brick under a pearl-colored sky.How often did Antero tell me about that pious and gen-tle city, and of the long appetite it suddenly gave him ofeternal quietness”.

Nesse caso, o que esperam do futuro, amanhã,ou o que recordam do passado, ontem, fica esculpi-do nesses grandes corpos suspensos, e ora avançanum lento êxodo que enche o céu, ora se mantéminerte, sem a ilusão do movimento. Há pensamen-tos de muitas ordens e, da mesma maneira, há nuvenscom muitos feitios, rendilhadas com o melindre dossentimentos complexos.Quem pode assegurar com certeza total que estas

go. These clouds belong to the Azores as the lagoons,as the hills, as the São Miguel accent. Maybe theseclouds were born from the stem of the furnas, waterthat boils in the earth with the intention of going upinto the sky and, from above, observe the nine islands,standing in line, at a distance. If it is the case, it’s alsocertain that, sooner or later, that water misses that earthand, in an instant, will return in the form of drops andoffers itself to the green, green pasture.They are like the spots on the dairy cows’ fur. Who hasdrawn these clouds? They were certainly the samehands which sketched these spots in the cows’ fur,owner’s of an endless time, and animals with sweeteyes, overflowing understanding. It is also possiblethat the clouds are the islands’ reverse relief. Everyday different, giving shape to something which wouldbe in any other way invisible, but not less real. Maybe these clouds are Azoreans’ thoughts. In thatcase, what they expect from the future, tomorrow, whatthey remember from the past, yesterday, remains sculp-ted in those large hanging celestial bodies which eit-her advance in a slow exodus filling the sky, or remain

daqueles açorianos quetiveram de partir. (…)

Lembram-se da suailha, chão de pedras

negras, vozes queainda os chamam, a

torre da igreja, o mar, eessas lembranças

transformam-se emnuvens…

nuvens não são as preocupações, ou o amor, ou omedo, ou a esperança dos açorianos? A ciência, pormais comprovada, não trata deste tipo de questões.Da poesia sabe a poesia. Talvez estas nuvens sejam as lembranças daquelesaçorianos que tiveram de partir. Nas terras onde estão,lembram-se da sua ilha, chão de pedras negras, vozesque ainda os chamam, a torre da igreja, o mar, e essaslembranças transformam-se em nuvens sobre estasilhas, sobre este oceano. Ficam estas nuvens a vigiaras ilhas, materializam o cuidado que, desde lá, enviamnesta direção. Então, estas nuvens são olhos.São os nossos olhos que passam demasiadas vezespela beleza sem a reconhecer. Habituámo-nos a estasnuvens quando devíamos, todos os dias, procurar océu na expectativa e no deslumbramento. Não hábeleza que seja capaz de vencer esse desinteresse. Estas nuvens, brancas de encontro à claridade, ounegras em dias entregues ao inverno, são nossas,fazem parte de nós e, ao mesmo tempo, existem napaisagem, lá longe, onde os nossos braços esticadosnão chegam. Essa é sempre a natureza daquilo quesomos capazes de ver. Existe fora de nós e, pelo olhar,somos capazes de trazê-la para o nosso interior. É aí,em nós, que se decide o peso destas nuvens: pesadascomo basalto ou leves, em flutuação, sem peso.Sim, estas nuvens são um arquipélago celeste, habi-tado por algo que precisa de atenção e consciênciapara existir, precisa de alma, espírito ou silêncio, res-piração ou mistério, matéria secreta, tão nossa comoo nosso nome, tão concreta como estarmos aqui,completamente invisível, mas não menos real.

Maybe these clouds are memories of those Azoreans whohad to leave. In the lands where they are now, theyremember their island, a soil of black stones, voices thatstill call them, the church tower, the sea, and thosememories become clouds over these islands, over thisocean. These clouds watch these islands, they mate-rialize the concern that from where they are now theysend in this direction. Therefore, these clouds are eyes.They are our eyes which often go by beauty withoutrecognizing it. We got used to these clouds when weshould, every day, gaze at the sky in expectation andawe. There is no beauty capable of overcoming this lackof interest.These clouds, white against the clarity, or black indays of winter, are ours, they are part of use and, atthe same time, they exist in the landscape, far away,where our stretched out arms don’t reach. This is alwaysthe nature of what we are capable of seeing. It existsoutside us and, through sight; we are capable of brin-ging it to our inside. And it’s there, in us, that we deci-de of the weight of these clouds: heavy as basalt or light,hovering, weightless. Yes, these clouds are a celestial archipelago, inhabitedby something which needs attention and conscience toexists, it needs a soul, spirit or silence, breathing or mys-tery, secret matter, so belonging to us as our name, soconcrete as our being here, completely invisible, but notless real.
