odos os anos, em fevereiro, renasce aCidade do Carnaval, em Salvador, naBaía. As ruas da cidade enchem-se comuma incrível corrente humana, na qualse misturam etnias, música, dança emuita cor, numa das maiores festas

populares do planeta. Vinte e cinco quilómetros deavenidas são preparadas com uma complexainfraestrutura - arquibancadas, camarotes, passarelas

de desfiles e postos de saúde e de segurança- parareceber os mais de dois milhões de foliões que por alipassam durante os seis dias de comemorações.Um dos maiores atrativos do Carnaval da Baía é o trioelétrico, um enorme camião equipado com umsistema de som para espetáculos ao vivo. É atrás dotrio elétrico que seguem, numa dança vibrante,milhares de pessoas em três circuitos de ruas e praças,interditadas para a festa.

THE CITY OF CARNIVAL Every year inFebruary, in Salvador, the City of Carnival comes tolife again. The city’s streets become full with anincredible human chain where people of differentethnical backgrounds, music and a lot of color minglein one of the biggest popular festivities on the planet.Twenty five kilometers of the avenues are the settingfor a complex infrastructure – grandstands, theaterboxes, runways, health centers and security

checkpoints – to welcome the over two million gueststhat will be attending during the six days thecommemoration will last.One of the biggest attractions of Bahia’s Carnival isthe trio elétrico, an enormous truck equipped with asound system for live shows. Thousands of peoplefollow behind the trio elétrico, dancing frantically,through three circuits of streets and squares whichhave been closed to traffic for the festivities.

SERENE ISLAND Graciosa invites us tovisit the wonder of the ‘furnas’, the warmthof the thermal waters and the tranquility ofsome spots on the coastline. In the middle of hisAtlantic adventure, writer Raúl Brandão encountered astunning scenery which he described in his book IlhasDesconhecidas: “In the cold morning light at 4 am I havebefore me a unique scenery, four islands coming out of thesea at the same time – Graciosa in light green with deco-rative cliffs on either side…It’s only at one point and it goesby quickly because the ship doesn’t stop…” The chronicleronly had a quick glimpse at the serene Graciosa landsca-pe, not having had a chance to see all the interesting thingsthe island has got to offer: from the geological mysticismof the ‘furnas’, the vast undulating crop fields, the warmthof the thermal waters to the large Santa Cruz square.

A zona urbana é igualmentepacata, com o casario alvo de Santa Cruz organiza-do em redor da praça central, debruada de araucá-rias, e espe lhado pelos dois pauis (tanques) de água.

Graciosa became known as the white islanddue to the whitish color of trachyte, a vol-canic rock found in this landscape. The remnants of the past volcanic activity contrast withthe serenity and tranquility of the Graciosa landscape.It is called Ilha Branca due to the whitish color of thetrachyte, a volcanic rock. Descendo os 183 degraus da torre, qual farolsubterrâneo, impressiona a visão da abóbada perfei-ta, anfiteatro rochoso que ganha uma dimensão espec-tral com a iluminação, o lago negro ao fundo e orumorejar da única fumarola existente. É a maiorestrutura deste género na Europa, e desde 2010 queé apoiada por um moderno centro de visitantes.

Long ago, at the time of volcanic activity, the ‘furna’ wasformed and the legend of Maria Encantada – who, accor-ding to the legend, refused to leave her house despite thepremonitory threats of an eruption. Composed mainly ofa stone tunnel with an ogival ceiling, the ‘furna’ leads toa splendid view over the woody slopes of Caldeira’s volca-nic cone. At the base of the referred crater, is the Enxofre‘furna’, whose openings can be seen among the incensecedars and the acacias. Going down the 183 steps of thetower resembling an underground lighthouse, we are impres-sed by the vision of a perfect vault – a rocky amphitheaterwhich gains a spectral dimension due to the lighting, theblack deep lake and the gurgling of the only existing fuma-role. It’s the largest structure of the kind in Europe and, since2010, it’s supported by a modern visitors’ center.Graciosa was classified by UNESCO as aBiosphere Reserve in 2007 in order to protectbiodiversity and sustainable development.

Where to stay in GraciosaWindmills can be seen scatteredin the landscape of Graciosa.Some were transformed intowelcoming rural tourismhouses. FROM WHALE-HUNTING TO WHALE- -WATCHING Fifty years of Azorean historyon São Miguel When I received a digitized versionof an old super-8 documentary on whale-hunting in SãoMiguel from my long-time friend Ulrich Scheer about fiveyears ago, I did not have a clue that I would ever writean article or a book about the old days of whale-huntingin the Azores. The fact that I could not find any documentaries, booksor photographs on that topic and no whaling museumon São Miguel after I had moved from Germany to thisisland, made me curious.I took that old movie, which was taken in 1964 by the22-year-old biology student during his 3-weeks stay withthe whalers, to the tv-station RTP-A in Ponta Delgada.The program director was very interested in this matter.One year later I invited Ulrich, who is now a professorat the University of Wuerzburg/Germany, to come to SãoMiguel again, the first time after almost 50 years. São Miguel, não fazia a menor ideia que algum diaescreveria um artigo ou um livro sobre os temposantigos de caça à baleia nos Açores.O facto de eu não conseguir encontrar nenhum docu-mentário, livros ou fotografias sobre o assunto e ne -nhum museu dedicado à caça da baleia em SãoMiguel, depois de me ter mudado da Alemanha paraa ilha, despertou a minha curiosidade.Levei aquele velho filme, que foi filmado em 1964pelo então aluno de biologia de 24 anos durante asua estada de três semanas com os caçadores debaleias, à estação de televisão RTP-A, em PontaDelgada. O diretor de programas mostrou muito inte-resse no assunto. Um ano depois convidei o Ulrich,

Foi o último massacre des-tes grandes e simpáticos mamíferos do mar.Hoje em dia, uma das maiores atracões turísticas paraquem visita os Açores são sem dúvida as viagens paraavistar as baleias nas quais é possível observar estes pací-ficos animais e os seus bebés a nadar tranquilamente noAtlântico. Mariano nunca lá tinha estado, nuncatinha visto os enormes esqueletos de cachalotespendurados do tecto, de maneira que ficou muitoimpressionado.O presidente do museu, Sr. James Russel, e o seu vicepresidente, o Sr. James J. Lopes, receberam-nos debraços abertos e convidaram-nos para uma agradávelvisita aos vários departamentos do museu e mais tardepara um jantar num restaurante requintado.

Mariano had never been therebefore, he had never seen the huge skeletons of spermw-hales hanging from the ceiling, so he was very impressed.The President of the museum, Mr. James Russel, and hisVice President, James J. Lopes, gave us a very big welcome and invitedus for a nice tour through the different departments of themuseum and later for lunch in a very fine restaurant.I flew back to the Azores and was glad the days of wha-ling were over. The last two spermwhales were caught in1987, the end of slaughtering the large and friendly mari-ne mammals.

omo foi o seu primeiro con-tacto com a figura de José doCanto?Conheci o José do Canto atra-vés das árvores que ele plan-tou. Pressenti logo que pode-ria ser uma pessoa diferente.O Baudelaire tem um poema

em que diz que os portugueses detestam árvores.Percebi também, através das suas cartas, o desejo queele tinha de transformar os Açores. Tentei fazer a bio-grafia de um grande senhor açoriano.

Como o classificaria? Um liberal, um iluminista,um “gentleman farmer”? Um patriota açoriano e um estrangeirado. O mode-lo dele era transformar São Miguel num recanto pare-cido em riqueza com os países que ele conhecia naEuropa. Ele tinha estado em Paris a estudar. Emborafosse “patrão”, queria elevar o nível do povo micae-lense.

How did you first contact with José do Canto hap-pen?I came to know José do Canto through the trees he plan-ted. I immediately sensed that he might be a different per-son. Baudelaire has a poem which says the Portuguese hatetrees. I also understood through the letters he wrote hiswish to transform the Azores. I tried to write the bio-graphy of a great Azorean gentleman.

How would you classify him? A liberal, a miniatu-re artist or a gentleman farmer?An Azorean patriot and an estrangeirado1. His modelwas to transform São Miguel in a place similar in wealthto the countries he knew in Europe. He had studied in Paris.Although he was the “boss”, he wanted the people formSão Miguel to have a higher standard.

What did you get to know about the Azores with thisproject?The geographical beauty. I am very urban- I was bornin Lisbon. In the Azores, I was amazed with the har-mony between the countryside landscapes and the cityones. I tell my estrangeirado* friends that if they wantto get to know Portugal, not top go to the Mainland, butto the Azores.

Era também fascinado pela botânica, apesar deter estudado matemática.Os homens de cultura dessa época tinham a tradiçãorenascentista, dominavam as letras e as ciências. Abotânica fascinava-o porque na ilha havia a possibi-lidade de plantar, era muito despovoada. Ao mesmotempo, fazia a maior coleção de livros de Camõesque existe em Portugal. Interessava-se por tudo.

O que deixa de legado para a actualidade?Que podemos dar o melhor de nós próprios à pátriaonde nascemos. Através dessa obsessão em melhorara ilha trouxe coisas que ainda permanecem: o ana-

What is his legacy to our times?That we can give the best of ourselves to the countrywhere we were born. Through this obsession in improvingthe island he brought things that still remain: pineapples,tea. And then, the beauty. Furnas is his doing, the gar-dens. He would get into action and changed things.

Jorge Amado tinha o seu refúgio na vivenda no bairro do Rio Vermelho, em cujos jardins

recebia as maiores figuras das artes brasileiras.

Ao lado da grande casa azul clara está a antigaresidência de estudantes, onde Jorge Amado morouna juventude. Neste local, que hoje é um hotel, evo -ca-se o pe río do em que Amado começou a escreveros seus primeiros trabalhos. Nathan Oliveira, filho de pais e avós açorianos, nasceuna Califórnia. Recebeu várias distinções, como o GuggenheimFellowship e o Grau de Comendador da Ordem de Mérito doInfante D. Henrique, pelo Estado Português. O seu trabalho,reconhecido internacionalmente, integra várias coleções de museusfamosos: Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, Metropolitan Museum ofArt e Museum of Modern Art, ambos em Nova Iorque. Durante30 anos foi docente na Universidade de Stanford e inspirou opersonagem Olivier Castro-Staal da série norte-americana Six FeetUnder. Faleceu a 14 de novembro de 2010.

Nathan Oliveira was born in California. His parents andgrandparents were Azorean. Among other distinctions, he was awarded theGuggenheim Fellowship and the Grau de Comendador da Ordem de

Tracy Silva Barbosa was born in Massachusetts, USA. Herparents were born on São Miguel Island. Tracy Silva Barbosa is a verytalented artist, an expert in combining different techniques onphotography, painting and glass artwork. Her work is focused on theinternal relations between man, memory and nature by incorporatingcultural contrasts and overlapping traditional landscapes withcontemporary environments. Her work is also part of several public andprivate collections all over the world. She was awarded the Biore/GenArt Prize, the Urban Glass Emerging Artist Fellowship and the DonisA. Dondis Travel Fellowship.

António DaCosta nasceu em Angrado Heroísmo, ilha Terceira. Poeta, crítico dearte e pintor foi um dos principais nomes dapintura surrealista em Portugal. Partiu paraParis em 1947 e instalou-se definitivamentenaquela cidade. Para além da pintura, dedicou-se à escrita. Durante cerca de 30 anos mantevea sua ligação às artes como crítico,colaborando em diversos jornais e revistas,nomeadamente no jornal brasileiro O Estado de S. Paulo.Faleceu em Paris a 2 de dezembro de 1990.

António DaCosta was born in Angra do Heroísmo, TerceiraIsland. Poet, art critic and painter, António DaCosta is one of the mostimportant names of surrealist painting in Portugal. He left to Paris in1947 and lived there ever since. He was also a writer. For 30 years, hekept connected to the arts as an art critic, by working with severalnewspapers and magazines, namely the Brazilian newspaper O Estadode São Paulo. He died in Paris on December 2nd 1990.

Domingos Rebelo nasceu em São Miguel. Estepintor açoriano foi autor de algumas das obrasmais conhecidas e emblemáticas da iconografiados Açores. Entre elas encontra-se a obra “OsEmigrantes”, um autêntico espelho da almaaçoriana. Aos 15 anos mudou-se para Paris ondeconviveu com grandes mestres franceses e pintoresportugueses. Expôs com regularidade nasexposições da Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes,

recebendo vários prémios. Regressou a Ponta Delgada, dedicando-seà docência. Faleceu em Lisboa no dia 11 de Janeiro de 1975.

Domingos Rebelo was born in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel Island.This Azorean painter was the author of some of the most renownediconographic works on the Azores. Among these, the painting “OsEmigrantes” (The Emigrants) is a mirror to the Azorean soul. When he was15 years old, he moved to Paris and got to know some of the greatest Frenchmasters and Portuguese painters. His work was regularly exhibited atSociedade Nacional de Belas Artes and he was awarded several prizes.Afterwards, he returned to Ponta Delgada and became a teacher. DomingosRebelo died in Lisbon on January 11th 1975.

John Mattos nasceu na Califórnia e é descendente deemigrantes açorianos das ilhas do Pico e S. Jorge. O seu trabalhode designer/ilustrador mereceu a distinção de uma centena deprémios. Muitos dos seus projetos são capa de grandes revistascomo a Time e Forbes e cartazes de promoção de filmes. Entre osseus principais clientes estão Arnold Schwarzenegger, DavidCopperfield, Microsoft, Disney ou a Nike. É o ilustrador deeleição dos correios norte-americanos. O seu selo comemorativodos Jogos Olímpicos de Inverno em 2006 teve uma tiragem de 60milhões.

John Mattos was born in California. His family was originallyfrom the islands of Pico and São Jorge. His work as a designer/illustratorhas been acknowledged by over one hundred awards. His projects include

covers of renowned magazines, as Time and Forbes,and film posters. Among his main clients, there isArnold Schwarzenegger, David Copperfield, Microsoft,Disney and Nike. He is also the favorite illustrator ofthe North-American post offices. His 2006 WinterOlympics commemorative stamp had a circulation of60 million copies.

João de Brito nasceu na ilha de S.Miguel. Ainda jovem emigrou com a famíliapara os EUA. As suas pinturas, inspiradas naslembranças da sua terra natal, nas paisagensdo Leste e Costa Oeste dos Estados Unidos enas suas muitas viagens, têm sido expostas nomundo inteiro, integrando colecçõesparticulares importantes e museus na Américado Norte e na Europa. As cores vivas e aspaisagens exuberantes captam a atenção dos peritos de arte,conservadores de museus e proprietários de galerias.

João de Brito was born in São Miguel Island. As a youngman, he emigrated to the United States with his family. His paintings,inspired by his memories of the homeland, the landscape of the Eastand West coasts of the United States and his numberless trips as well,have been exhibited throughout the world, as part of both renownedprivate collections and museums in North America and Europe. Theluxurious landscapes and bright colors of his paintings draw theattention of art experts, museum curators and gallery owners.

Joel Furtado nasceu em Winnipeg, Canadá, e é umilustrador e artista da animação. É açordescendente pelo ladopaterno (São Miguel). Desde criança que a banda desenhada

começou a fazer parte da sua vida. Comformação em Animação na Emily CarrUniversity of Art + Design (Vancouver),atualmente trabalha para a empresa Microsoftna área dos vídeo jogos e filmes. Na suajovem carreira incluem-se vários projetos emáreas como o desenho manual, recorte,marionetas, stop motion e 3D. O seu trabalhoé presença constante nos grandes festivais decinema de todo mundo.

Joel Furtado, born in Winnipeg, Canada, is an illustrator andan animation artist. He is an Azorean descendant, as his father wasborn on São Miguel Island. Comic strips have been a part of his life eversince he was a kid. Joel Furtado studied Animation at Emily CarrUniversity of Art + Design (Vancouver) and currently works forMicrosoft in the area of videogames and films. Although his career is notthat long, it includes many projects in different areas, such as drawing,puppet making, stop motion and 3D. His work is constantly displayed atthe greatest film festivals worldwide.

Gaspar Frutuoso obteve as informações sobre a casa deFrancis Drake junto de Manuel Martins Soares, um“nobre mercador” da ilha de S. Miguel que a tinha visi-tado pessoalmente a convite do seu proprietário, sinalde que as afinidades atlânticas entre os Açores e aInglaterra eram já bastante significativas nos finais dequinhentos. ENGLISH PIRATES IN THE AZO-REAN ISLANDS A hundred years after thebeginning of the settlement of the archipelago, the Azoresbegan being visited by pirates from northern Europe thatwere looking to intercept the ships coming carried with spi-ces on their way back from India. A report sent to KingJohn III in 1543, already called his attention for the needto fortify the main ports on the islands due to the threatof French pirates who, coming from the coasts of Brittanyand Normandy, were the first to make their presence feltin this area of the Atlantic.In the last two decades of the 16th century, when thedynastic union between Portugal and Spain takes place,the growing geostrategic importance of the archipelago, asa “meeting point of the way back home”, is going toattract a growing number of pirates to the seas of theAzores, namely those representing the emerging sea powerof the time, Elizabeth the 1st’s England. Francis Drake,one of the most famous of Elizabethan pirates, had hisbiography written by the Azorean Gaspar Frutuoso (1522-

A Ballad of theFleet, 1880) cujas linhas iniciais colocam o arquipélagoaçoriano em primeiro plano: At Flores, in the Azores, SirRichard Grenville lay / And a pinnace, like a flutter’d bird,came flying from far away.Mais do que a morte de Richard Grenville, a captura eafundamento do Revenge, que acabaria por ocorrer juntoà ilha Terceira, constituiu um rude golpe para a mari -nha real inglesa, pois o galeão, construído em 1577, erao mais avançado exemplo da tecnologia naval de então.Em 1971, o explorador britânico Sydney Wingall, recen-temente falecido a 6 de Abril de 2012, projetou realizaruma expedição internacional aos Açores com o objeti-vo de localizar os destroços do Revenge, mas a campa -nha, uma das primeiras a chamar a atenção para aimportância da arqueologia subaquática nas águas doarquipélago, nunca se viria a concretizar.

The leadership of the Revenge was at the time in thehands of Richard Grenville, another famous Englishseafarer who had in the past also owned BucklandAbbey before it became Francis Drake’s in 1585.Grenville died aboard the Spanish admiral ship as aresult of the wounds he suffered during the battle, andthe heroic resistance he showed before his opponents ins-cribed this episode in the annals of the EnglishElizabethan tragic-maritime history. Immortalized byLord Tennyson in a poem (The Revenge. A Ballad of theFleet, 1880), whose initial verses put the Azorean archi-pelago in the first plan: At Flores, in the Azores, SirRichard Grenville lay / And a pinnace, like a flutter’dbird, came flying from far away. More than RichardGrenville’s death, the capture and sinking of the Revenge,which came to happen near Terceira Island, was a harshblow for the English Royal Navy because the vessel,built in 1577, was the most advanced example of thenaval technology of the time. In 1971, the British explo-rer Sydney Wingall, who recently passed away on April6th 2012, had the project of leading an internationalexpedition to the Azores with the aim of trying to loca-te the wreckage of the Revenge, but the campaign, oneof the first to call the attention to the importance ofunderwater archeology in the seas of the archipelago,would never be carried out. What is left of Francis Drake’s flagship, prideand symbol of the English naval power, liesunder the ocean depths of the sea of theAzores.

à A TRIP TO THE ROUTE TO INDIAAs other Azorean islands, Terceira is very close to the sea.The houses are never very distant from the sea, as if itsinhabitants were always anxious to leave. But, far fromthe island, there is no one who doesn’t think he was expe-lled from Paradise. That bears nine name in the Azores,Terceira’s being one of the most famous. The island oncewas coveted by kings, such as Phillip II, or by pirates, suchas Francis Drake. Because Angra’s harbor was the centerof the World, the anchorage for ships sailing to the Eastand West Indies routes. Therefore, to get to know thisisland it’s not enough to stroll around its cities and villa-ges, its meadows and belvederes. Because each stone mighthave a story to tell.Terceira is the land of joy. A state of mind its inhabitantsshare among themselves and with any visitor. Its people givecolor to life as no one else in the archipelago. The hue of itsvillages forms a sort of enormous canvas, in a perfect chro-matic harmony. The Carnival dances, rarely dramatic, arepossible the largest popular theater in the World – almostalways satirical and very humorous pageants, performed allover the island and all through the night by hundreds of peo-ple. meiros séculos da nacionalidade. E as Sanjoaninas,sob o pretexto de honrarem São João Baptista, sãouma homenagem à beleza, à cor e ao movimento. Só um povo assim poderia ter feito da tourada àcorda uma festa em que o toiro nada sofre e as pes-soas muito se divertem. Ao ponto de, sendo corri-dos apenas quatro, o mais famoso ser o “quintotoiro” – o convívio entre vizinhos e forasteiros, àvolta de uma mesa bem fornecida. E não falta quemnão veja senão este… Pode dizer-se da ilha aquilo que um dos seus poe-tas, Marcolino Candeias, disse carinhosamente deAngra: “Oh minha tolinha inchada de orgulho doaqui-já-foi-só-Portugal”. Porque, já todo o Paísreconhecera Filipe II como rei legítimo, e a Terceirateimava no apoio a D. António Prior do Crato. Nasbaías da Salga e das Mós está a memória das últi-mas batalhas do conflito. E, na Praia da Vitória,pode imaginar-se a primeira derrota sofrida pelosabsolutistas de D. Miguel em luta contra os defen-sores do regime liberal.No entanto, para compreender a importância his-tórica da Terceira é pela fortaleza de São JoãoBaptista, em Angra, que se deve começar. Ela dá aideia de quanto aquele porto representava na defe-sa da rota da prata e do oiro das Índias Ocidentais,tendo sido já intenção de D. João III erguer ali umafortificação para proteger as armadas do Oriente. Éuma das três grandes fortalezas do Atlântico Nortemandadas construir por Filipe II, conforme estra-tégia definida pelo seu engenheiro-mor, TibúrcioSpanochi. As outras duas são a de Cartagena dasÍndias e a de Havana.A Terceira não será a alma dos Açores. Mas, se nostirassem esta ilha, os Açores ficariam sem alma.

It’s one of the large forts of the North Atlantic whichPhillip II made build, according to the strategy definedby his chief engineer, Tibúrcio Spanochi. The other twoare the one in Cartagena and the one in Havana.Terceira might not be the soul of the Azores. But of thisisland were taken from us, the Azores would lose its soul.
