As we reach the second birthday of the re-launched Barton Today, it is a good time tosay a big thank you to all the people without whom there would be no magazine; ouradvertisers whose money pays for our running costs, the many people who send inthose much needed articles, the volunteer deliverers who get the magazines to youand of course the editorial team who somehow manage to hit the deadline eachmonth. Long may your support continue.
Let’s hope that you have all managed to have some sort of break during the summer.Local resident Karl Tullett certainly did and he shares with us his memorable trip tothe Dominican Republic. Elsewhere in the magazine you can read about the fever ofexcitement that hit Sheffield Way as long serving fire fighter Dave Sibley had hismoment of fame when he was visited by ‘that bloke from that jungle thing.’ Talking offamous people, Saints and England rugby player visited the Youth Club as heofficially handed over a defibrillator bought as a result of money raised at a charityevent. Local MP Christopher Heaton-Harris shares his stance towards developmentproposals whilst Nick Chapman tells us about a group of residents who are uniting tooppose the Redrow Development off Dowthorpe Hill.
Looking ahead there is an interesting looking Burlesque show taking place at theWorking Men’s Club in October, an art exhibition being held at Gallery West inSeptember and most immediately the Village Show happening on Saturday 7thSeptember at the Silver Band Club.
Enjoy the read and have a good September, oh and don’t forget to enter the threecompetitions we have this month, you never know, you may win!
STOP PRESSHe grew up on the Gold Coastin Australia, was married to afamous glamour model and is awell-known singer and song writer. So what was he doing in Sheffield Waylast month? Go to pages 22-23 to findout who it was and the full story!

Barton Today September 2013
DexterityEllie Leighton age 15 writes......An array of enlightening performances absorbed the hearts and
minds of eager audience members. The Annual Dexterity Showcase is always a mix, from the
young, light-hearted dancers to the more professional, inspiring and creative performances.
Estha Jones is the much needed and admired artist that merges the treasured mix of these
opposites into one perfected masterpiece.
Backstage was fun, ordered chaos every dancer played their part in the day’s pursuits towards
what many people believed to be very successful and enjoyable evening.
From the audiences view the dancers did no wrong and executed each dramatic motif the way they expected.
The dancers abilities range from beginners to highly skilled with professional performances from former students.
We also have a unique boys contemporary dance group, which is always a very popular piece – the boys always
amaze us with their talents. The Dexterity community is always keen to accept new members. Whether the person
has no experience or is the next George Sampson, we are happy to work with them.
Dexterity is like a family, we know and care for everyone and we couldn’t work without each other.
If you would like to find out more about Dexterity and the classes we offer please visit our website
www.dexteritydance.com or phone Estha on 07971 822 009. Enrollment for September is open book soon to avoid
disappointment. Classes offered in Olney also coming soon. Maybe you too could be onstage with us next year?

Youth Club NewsLOCAL RUGBY PLAYER HANDS OVER DEFIBRILLATOR TO YOUTH CLUB Marie Marshall writes....Courtney Lawes, Northampton Saints and England rugby player, came tothe Youth Club on Friday 2nd August to support a charity called 'C.R.Y' that is close to my heart.A crowd of youngsters and adults had gathered as Courtney Lawes handed over to a youth clubrepresentative a defibrillator. This portable piece of equipment is vital in saving lives if any personin the youth club area was to suffer a cardiac arrest.
Courtney signed his autograph on shirts, rugby balls, pieces of paper. He was happy to mingleand chat with the youth of the village and have photographs taken. Courtney Lawes is supportiveof the charity C.R.Y (Cardiac Risk in the Young). He knows how important it is for young peoplewho take part in regular competitive sport to be regularly tested. The money to purchase thedefibrillator was raised at a charity entertainment night at the youth club last September. Thepeople who supported this event I wish to thank once again.
The charity evening also raised money for the C.R.Y charity who as well as screening youngpeople, counsel family members who have lost a love one so young (<35yrs). The charity alsofunds research into why young people are dying suddenly of S.A.Ds (Sudden Arrthymic DeathSyndrome). Approximately 12 young people (<35yrs) die of S.A.Ds every week in UK. In May2012 we as a family suffered a devastating loss of a young person aged 21yrs after a cardiacarrest. If there had been a defibrillator there the outcome could have been a lot different. Thiswas my drive to fund for a defibrillator for theyouth club and raise money for the C.R.Y charitywho supported us as a family in a lot of ways.

Words from Jonathan ThompsonI would think that if we are all totally honest we all love a little name-dropping. In my work of late, I have spoken with a young lady whowent to see Olli Murs and Robbie Williams in London. She spokeof a fantastic concert enjoyed by some 60,000 enthusiastic people, all of whom would have loved to have met, in person, their idols.
Another lady, slightly older, is absolutely mad on pop star CliffRichard who has been entertaining audiences almost since Noahwas a lad. She has travelled all over the country to see her idol, andwhen Cliff Richard appeared in Birmingham, she actually met himin the flesh - a time never to be forgotten. I don’t think she washedfor a week after Cliff gave her a kiss on the cheek. Only joking, butthat is what she said.
I, personally, have no real claims to meet anyone really famous, although I have been in the presence of Dr. Billy Graham, the worldfamous evangelist, and a few well know folk singers andsportsmen and women.
I often wonder how many people name-dropped about meetingJesus of Nazareth, as he went out to meet people from all walksof life. Countless numbers of people flocked to meet and seeJesus, and there were occasions where he would get into a boat,or go into a hillside in order to share with them all. No doubt thedisciples would have name-dropped, telling of their friendship withthe Saviour of the world, and of their meetings with him. It wasgood to be looked upon as a follower of this special man.
Then, however, came the plans of the Jewish and Romansauthorities to get rid of the man of Galilee and after an unjust trial, they took Jesus to the hill of Calvary, to crucify him alongside twocriminals.
The name droppers fled, no longer prepared to be called friends ofJesus, betraying him, denying him, running away from the crossfor fear of their own lives.
Thankfully, however, the teachings of Jesus remained firmly fixedin their minds, and although they let go of Jesus, he never let goof them.
In sending them out into the world, following his death andresurrection, Jesus had made it clear in his teachings that theywere to follow his example of going to share with those who hadno name, those who were outcasts, the broken and the lost, caringfor the broken hearted and the rejected.
Recently, sharing with fellow Christians in Raunds, I heard of theirmonthly visits to Whitechapel in London, to share with the churchthere in a soup kitchen, where the poor and desolate are served inlove. Many do not know where they have come from; why theyare here or were they are going. The church simply listens to Jesus’words “as you did it unto the least of these my little ones, you didit unto me”. There are countless people within our communitieswho work tirelessly to help their fellow men and women in need, and these are folk who serve without counting any cost. Their workis usually done in secret and they are deserving of all praise.
In a world with so much potential for good, we are nowunderstanding that in order to build a better world, we must takecare of those still living in squalor, and poverty, the hungry andhomeless, and those in war torn countries where the bullet and thebomb still rule.
Let us give thanks for all the love and goodness that is sharedwithin this community and the wider world.
God bless and be with you all, Jonathan.
HAPPY MEMORIESThis month is a celebration ofHarvest and it’s no differentwith this month’s HAPPYMEMORIES! This month welook back to 2009 when wewere joined by Mr DavidHudson who spoke about“Keeping calm and carrying” atour harvest festival celebrations. We had a brilliant celebrationthat year like we do every year, and we, this year will be nodifferent so in 2055 we can write about the 2013 harvest festivaland big sing in barton today!

Barton Today September 2013

The 7th August saw 115 people crammed into the Baptist Churchhall in Earls Barton all keen to share their concerns at the proposedRedrow development on land off Station Road Earls Barton.
Coming as it did on top of the permission already granted to thesame builder, who exploited a technical loop hole to win at appeal, the residents affected by this latest proposal for another 85 housesare rightly concerned not only at what effect this will have on theirown lives but the wider effects on the infrastructure in EarlsBarton.
I hope that most people are aware that planning regulations in thiscountry are currently in a state of flux. The old local plans thatcarefully regulated development across entire areas have beendone away with and communities have been given the opportunityto develop Neighbourhood Plans so that people can influence howtheir own communities will be developed. To have nodevelopment is clearly not really a practical option in a place suchas this so the task was to seek opinion on what people would liketo see.
The Neighbourhood planning group did just that and their surveyshowed that people would like to see a development to the northof the village centre close to the A4500. This is currently beingdiscussed between landowners, the Parish Council and developersand would, if allowed to proceed unhindered deliver this village’s250 dwelling commitment for the next 20 years.
Unfortunately for communities, including us, the NeighbourhoodPlan process is long and tortuous and we have yet, through no lackof effort, to have it adopted. What this means in effect is thatdevelopers are attempting to exploit the current void in adoptedguidance to apply for development anywhere they can find.
Back to the plot however and the 115 residents, anxious to uniteto oppose this development, agreed that a committee should beformed to focus on the issues and to develop targeted and relevantgrounds for objection to assist them in formulating their ownobjections once the application has been made.
This committee has now met and various tasks are beingundertaken by the members. It will continue to meet and workthroughout this process until such time as the matter comes toCommittee and members will attend to speak against thedevelopment as, I am sure, will many of the other residentsaffected.
I have already heard cries on NIMBY from some quarters andmaybe there is some truth in that but why shouldn’t people wantto keep the environment they thought they had moved into for aslong as possible. What the village as a whole needs to considerhowever is -
• This could be the first application of many along the valley side.
• This application alone will stretch infrastructure let alone anyothers.
• The Redrow sites will not be instead of the 250 housesdiscussed by the Council but will be as well as them.
• There are currently other ‘brownfield’ sites especially off HighStreet coming on line that will provide some of the requirement.
So please offer your support to the new group. There is a websitewww.save earlsbarton.org and we will be active on facebook. Lookout for posters and flyers and make your views known.
It isn’t just a matter for Station Road and Dowthorpe Hill residentsbut the whole village. In the end we have to draw our own line inthe sand and say what we want. “Urban or Rural – You Decide”
Nick Chapman - Chairman
Development in Earls Barton - Redrow and Beyond
ChristopherHeaton-HarrisReportsA considerable number of localresidents in the village havecontacted me in the last couple ofweeks about the proposedRedrow Station Road Eastdevelopment. I have replied toeach of those residentsindividually, but thought it mightbe useful to make everyone inEarls Barton aware of my stance on this, having been along tothe site at the invitation of local residents at the end of July.
Generally speaking, if residents are concerned, it would helpme enormously if they could drop me a note with their specificobjections. I say this, as parliamentary convention dictates thatMembers of Parliament do not involve themselves in planningmatters, but personally, I am happy to make an exception to therule and make a representation in the event of a proposalinvolving more than ten dwellings and if there is veryconsiderable local concern registered with me. For me, thesupport of the parish council and the borough councillors is alsoan important barometer and actually, I have a very positiveworking relationship with your local borough councillors; RobGough, Peter Morrall and George Blackwell.
As I’m sure you can appreciate, I require this to bedemonstrated to me, otherwise I’d be involved in everyplanning matter in my constituency, however large or small. Infact, the Prime Minister will tell you that I’m constantly barkingat him with regards to local planning matters and I am alsohappy to help the local campaign, as residents see fit.
However, you might be interested to know that theGovernment has recently (and significantly) decentralisedpower over planning, through abolishing the last Government’sRegional Spatial Strategies (RSSs); including the one for ourarea. These targets have been a real hindrance to localcouncillors when determining planning applications, owing tothe fact that they have often been cited as grounds forupholding appeals by the Planning Inspectorate; in turn makingthe rejection of planning applications by local authority planningcommittees an extremely risky and expensive business.
Under the old RSS targets, the Borough Council ofWellingborough (BCW) had just over a two year ‘land bank’(supply of land for housing) and in law it should have had a 5year ‘land bank’ – I was recently in a meeting, also attended bythe Parish Clerk and Earls Barton Parish Council members, where we were told the abolition of the RSS means that aftera short consultation and the revised Core Strategy is adopted, the same amount of land, taking into account local demands, could stretch to a six year ‘land bank’. This should help defeatdevelopers’ main reasons for speculative applications forhousing, such as in this case.
So, as I say, I am more than happy to help out with the localcampaign and object to this proposal once the time comes andthere is actually a planning application to formally object to.

One of the Traidcraft producers in Sri Lanka is Gospel House, which has beensupplying Traidcraft since 1980. They provide work for small family businesses in their area -you can see some of the craft workers making the very colourful toys in the picture.
For Indika, a young mother working for Gospel house, having work close by means she cancombine earning a living with looking after her children, Hansika (9) and Shalu (18months).She used to work in a garment factory and when asked why she had changed jobs said:“This is better because of my little child.”
Gospel House Background
Gospel House in Madampe, Southern Sri Lanka, seeks to provide employment opportunities for disadvantaged young people, often with no educational qualifications. Skills training for continuing development enables many to move on to other jobs.
Gospel House stresses the importance of a responsible attitude towards the environment and a desire to respect local culturalnorms. GH supports many small craft groups and through its work, many women have been trained and empowered. Tsunami-relief funds have enabled the establishment of a number of new micro-enterprises, which Gospel House has helped to resource.
Traidcraft” UK HQ in Gateshead were recently really excited to welcome Shiran Karunaratne, a producer from Gospel House inSri Lanka, to Traidcraft in August to chat about his exciting new range of wooden hand crafted toys. We have some of these inour fairtrade shop already and plan to have more for the Christmas season but they can also be ordered any time.
Hope to welcome you soon in the shop and at the next coffee morning.

John Hutt - 60 years of service for ThePost OfficeJohn Hutt celebrated his 75th birthday this August but is still serving the community in hislocal Post Office. It is rare these days that you encounter such an incredible work ethiccoupled with employee loyalty. John has worked for the Post Office ‘ man and boy’.
On his 15th birthday on the 24th August 1953 he was accepted into Post Officeemployment as a telegram boy. Aboard his BSA motorcycle he has many tales to tell ofhis delivery days, some of which make you roar with laughter and some that will makeyou hair stand on end but all in the line of duty!
Swapping his wheels for a Post Office counter chair, John progressed his career ascounter staff for a number of years, learning the complicated internal Post Office systemsbefore being promoted to Postal Executive status.
Many remember John as the accomplished and approachable Post Master of the mainWellingborough Post Office. After serving several years in Wellingborough he made avery brief and some would say feeble attempt at retirement. It wasn’t long before he wasbehind the counter again at the Earls Barton Post Office. Over his 60 years of Post Officeservice he has encountered decimalisation, computerisation and privatisation and hastaken it all in his stride. Hats off to John and many happy returns (no pun intended).

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Trevor Skidmore feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing
is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do
the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Earls Barton, Nothampton and Wellingborough areas
is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal
satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Trevor a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Across all areasof The Castle we will be hosting free activity to introduce you tothe exciting and dynamic world of the Theatre. From tasterworkshops run by our participation team, to sneak peeks of ournew autumn catering menu, back-stage tours, information ofupcoming shows and projects and chances to win tickets andprizes throughout the day, this is a great opportunity to learn moreabout what The Castle does and how you can get involved.
Next it’s to the Derngate for JACK DEE – Wednesday 18thSeptember. Jack Dee is back after a six year absence from standup, during which he has appeared on QI, Never Mind TheBuzzcocks, 8 Out Of 10 Cats and Have I Got News For You, hostedRadio 4’s I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue, and co-written and starredin the hit sitcom Lead Balloon. Once again, he is agonising overthe slightest of annoyances and misdemeanors
Now time to hop back to Wellingborough for ALISTAIRMCGOWAN – Thursday 19th September (Castle Theatre). TheNation’s favourite impressionist, Alistair McGowan, goes back tohis stand-up roots for a new two-hour show. Asking the bigquestions like: would the world be a happier place if Ed Milibandwas Prime Minister? What are we really thinking while watchingShakespeare? And is Hilary Devey Jessie J’s mum? Expect to heareveryone from Andy Murray to Colin Murray, riffs on everythingfrom Jeff Stelling to bad spelling and at least one song aboutbutter. Warning: May contain puns!
Staying in Wellingborough for more puns I’m sure – we welcomeJoe Pasquale in HA HA HOLMES! Friday 27th September (CastleTheatre)
There’s a beast on the moors, a crime to be solved, and with theHa Ha team on the case – what can go right?!
You’d be absolutely barking mad to miss this pipe-smoking newshow from theatre’s funniest parodists as Holmes and Watsonembark on their most dangerous adventure yet ... hunting downThe Hound of The Baskervilles. It’s elementary! It’s also downrighthilarious as comedic national treasure Joe Pasquale takes on the
role of Sherlock Holmes. As one of the UK’stop stand-ups Joe brings mirthful merrinessto the proceeding, but will he be skating onthin ice?
With writer Ben Langley as Doctor Watsonand Andrew Fettes as everyone else, this sure-fire wonderfullyridiculous show is well worth an investigation.
Has the beast bitten off more than he can chew when confrontedby our crime stopping team? Will Holmes find his deerstalker andwill the deer be happy when he does? Stick some shag in your pipeand visit 221b Baker Street for the most gripping comic caper ofthe age!
One last trip back to Northampton for STEWART LEE – Saturday28th September (DERNGATE.) The acclaimed writer andcomedian, Stewart Lee, presents a mixed stew of unrelated ideasin preparation for his 2014 TV series of Stewart Lee’s ComedyVehicle. See it live so that you can begin the backlash ahead oftransmission.

Our Day at The ‘Bake Off!’Georgina Jeyes writes......My daughter Anna and myself, along with 5 other tea rooms took part in a‘bake off’ on Monday 19th August to battle it out to be crowned Independent Café / Tea Room ofThe Year 2013/14.
The competition, devised by Northamptonshire Enterprise Partnership (NEP), is now in its fifth yearand is aimed at celebrating all that is great about local produce and drink, recognising excellence withinthe county’s dining venues and rewarding those who work so hard within the culinary sector.
After completing a competition entry form and impressing a mystery shopper, The Apothocoffee Shop was shortlisted as finalistsand we were invited to the impressive kitchens of Northampton College for ‘The Bake Off’.
We had to prepare a scone and a cake of the venue with accompanying drinks to a panel of expert judges. Anna took on thechallenge of baking a lemon polenta cake served with crème fraiche and freshraspberries followed by our signature savoury country tea – A cheese and chivescone served with butter, cheese and chutney and a refreshing pot of afternoontea.
We, along with all the other finalists, now have to wait until Thursday 17thOctober to discover our fate when the winner and runner-up in all 13 categoriesof this year’s awards will be announced at the awards dinner taking place at TheRoyal and Derngate…..Watch this space for the results.

I Know That’s Dave Sibley But Who’s
That Bloke With The Stubbly Chin?
As a retained fire fighter in Earls Barton of
almost twenty years, Sheffield Way resident
Dave Sibley is well used to dealing with
incidents out of the ordinary. So when his boss
Colin Wells told him he was being deployed
over night at the Mounts Fire Station in July,
Dave thought nothing of it, despite the fact it
was the first time he had ever done that
particular shift. Having spent an uneventful night
in Northampton, Dave was asked to begin
another shift next morning as stand in at Earls
Barton Fire Station. There wasn’t even time to
nip back home for a quick spruce up.
The day passed by without event until just
before 6.00 pm when the bleeps went off. The
print out indicated that an alarm had been
raised in the village. The crew of six jumped
aboard the engine and roared out of the station.
As they made their way towards the incident
Dave asked Colin Wells why he was shooting
what was happening with a hand held video
camera. Colin explained that he was putting
together a little package of memories to pass
on to Dave whose retirement is not far off.
The engine and crew, with Dave firmly
ensconced in the front row, descended
Dowthorpe Hill although not with quite the
same urgency that accompanies a normal
call out.
Barton Today September 2013
22
To Dave’s surprise the driver then turned into
Sheffield Way where Dave himself lives. At this
moment Dave realised that ‘there was
something going on.’ Sheffield Way was awash
with adults and children and lots of vehicles.
Instead of concern on their faces, the people
were laughing and looking excited.Standing
amongst them were his son and daughter, Katie
and James. As the engine came to a halt, a
vaguely familiar face stepped forward to open
the door and greet Dave. As Dave recalled, “I
thought he looked a bit like that bloke who had
been in that jungle thing.” Well he wasn’t wrong.
It was singer and celebrity Peter Andre who had
come to Earls Barton to front up the making of
a new series of ‘60 Minute Make Over’ to be
screened on television this autumn. For the past
few weeks, Dave had well and truly been duped
by his family and work colleagues.
It was Dave’s daughter Katie who had been
instrumental in setting it all up. She had put
forward her dad’s name as a possible candidate
for the programme. The programme’s aim is to
transform someone’s house and leave it with a
real designer feel. As Dave’s lounge wasn’t quite
at this stage, being an empty room with just a
child’s play house in the middle, Katie thought it
would leave plenty of scope for improvement.
The application was successful and thus began
the plot to prevent Dave from being in on the
secret. This was no easy task. During the weeks
leading up to the big day, various members of the
programme had to go to Sheffield Way to take
measurements and work out how to transform
the lounge and conservatory.
On the actual day itself, nearly thirty people
beavered away, painting and decorating, replacing
furniture, putting in new wood flooring, curtains
etc. Dave was even given a new television and
Gucci blinds. As you can see from the
accompanying photos it resulted in a stunning
outcome though Dave was not too sure about
the light beige sofa!
As Dave stepped off the engine on that day,
several people were heard to say, “Isn’t that
Dave Sibley the famous fire fighter just there,
but I don’t know who that dark haired foreign
looking bloke with the stubble is!” Only joking
ladies.
Dave will never forget the day reality television
came to Sheffield Way. The next time however,
Colin tells him he is being deployed over night
at the Mounts or Katie asks him to go away for
a few days, his antennae may well detect that
something strange is going on.
As for Dave himself and the whole experience,
he says it is great to have all that much needed
work done by someone else. He says that he
will be unchanged by the fame that it has
brought him, though he will be doing book
signings from his mansion in Monaco later in
the year. Watch out for the ‘60 Minute Make
Over’ this autumn.

Hanging BasketsDear Barton Today
After reading the letters in your August edition I would like to thankAlison for writing in and showing appreciation for the hangingbaskets in Great Doddington. I would, however, point out that thecomments at the bottom of the letter saying it was thought localbusiness and individuals sponsored the baskets are incorrect. GreatDoddington has a small group of ladies who form the ‘GardeningTeam’ and grow plants each year to sell at the annual plant sale heldin May. This plant sale raises funds to buy plants for the hangingbaskets and tubs in the village. The Gardening Team then make upthe baskets and hang them as well as maintaining them throughoutthe summer months.
I don’t know what the arrangements are for Olney but it certainly lookslovely when driving through.
Yours sincerely
Jane NunleySecretary Great Doddington Gardening Team
Thank you for putting us right about that Jane and a splendid jobyour ladies do too. It’s nice to know that Barton Today is read farand wide…even in the depths of Great Doddington!
Doggy DateHello Barton Today!
My dog Taz asked me to send this in on his behalf.
He very much likedreading through theAugust edition and,as he is slightlycompetitive in nature,he couldn't allowSandy to be the onlydog to get her face inthe glossy pages!Although he did addthat he thinks she'squite a stunner, andhe'd definitely be upfor a doggy date (ifshe is still single?) If not, never mind...maybe you could help him outwith a new feature? Matchdog.com maybe?
Lorraine Almey
I can see a future in this. Look out for the next Doggy Speed Datingevent. Any suggestions about where we can hold it? How about atthe Dog and Duck in Wellingborough? Alright…can you do better?
Dear B2Day,
Just to let everyone know that in aid of cancer research, we all had avery successful time serving tea and cake to all the lovely people thatcame to support us. We made a grand total including donations of£475.00 Thank you all.
Jennifer Gordon
Well done for raising money for such a deserving charity.
In memory of Jean Axford Great village to live inI have recently moved to the village and have been living here for justover three months. What a great place it is and people are so friendly.
There is so much going on.
How nice it was to see the carnival and go to some of the festivalevents.
There is so much on your door step that there is no need to go out ofthe village if you don’t want to. I think I’ll be here for some time.
Steve
I’m glad that you have settled in well to life in Earls Barton. You arevery right, it is a very busy and welcoming place.
Fab Mag!Dear Barton Today,
I just want to say thank you to everybody who helps to put themagazine together. I think it is fantastic for a village to have its own48 page magazine every month which is delivered free of charge toyour door step. I look forward to the magazine arriving and catchingup on all the news. You’re doing a great job.
Thank you,
Ann
Thank you for your kind words Ann. It is good to know that ourefforts are appreciated. I have to say though that we could not do itwithout the great support we get from advertisers and all thosepeople contributing their own articles.
Speeding CarsDear B2Day,
There has been a lot in the national press lately about people movingfrom towns to the countryside and then complaining about the noisespeculiar to village life.
Having been real 'townies' - we moved to Earls Barton not very longago.
We love hearing the church bells, we enjoy the sounds of the childrenplaying outside (squeals and crying and giggles and all). We havelearned to live with the harsh sound of the many jackdaws around andwe don't even mind the cockerel which wakes up sometime before ouralarm is due to go off.
The sound which we absolutely HATE is that of the small number ofresidents who daily drive at excessive speeds through the centre of thevillage. Apart from the aggravation of the noise of these motorists, thedanger to any other drivers or passers-by cannot be overstated.
As we have chosen to live in a village with amenities, including a localpolice presence, we are at a loss to understand why this sort of drivingcannot be stopped. I am sure that we are not the only people who areaware of this (and who could furnish the police with descriptions ofthe cars). We are unable to quote registration numbers as the cars areusually going too fast to see them!!
Love John!!
Nice to know that a 'townie' has settled well into rural life. Speedingthrough the centre of the village is a real problem which is madeworse when the children return to school after the summer holidays.Anyone out there with any suggestions?

SELLING NEWSBy Adam Plater of
Acorn Sales & Lettings
Home sales at Acorn Sales & Lettings are
reflecting the UK’s recent surge is
property prices and sales transactions.
‘We have seen a marked increase in
enquiries from home buyers, and this is
reflected in the number of properties
sold in the last three months’ comments Adam Plater of Acorn, ‘and
demand is certainly outstripping supply’. As Rightmove.co.uk has recently
published - the underlying recovery in the housing market continues,
with the price of property coming to market up by an average of 8.8%
(+£20,210) in the first eight months of the year. Buyer demand is set
to increase further when Help to Buy starts assisting purchasers of
second-hand property in January, highlighting the need for greater
property supply to meet growing demand and mitigate unsustainable
upwards price pressure.
We are already seeing early signs of demand outstripping supply and
the Government needs to ensure that the current new build Help to
Buy scheme, and its extension in January to second-hand homes, deliver
more properties onto the market as well as boosting demand. The
number of properties coming to market so far in 2013 is up just 0.2%
on the same eight months in 2012, an increase of just 1,664 properties.
However, this marginal improvement in fresh supply is outstripped by a
5% jump in transactions and a 17% annual increase in email leads to
agents from Rightmove so far this year. As this data indicates, there has
never been a better time in the last 5 years to sell your property.

More success for Earls Barton Bowls Club
Neil Gould played once again in the England Bowls Finals, this time in the 2 wood competition. On a lovely sunny day with conditions perfectfor bowls Neil started off slowly and was a couple of shots down after a few ends. But he crawled back brilliantly and by the half way stagewas level with his younger Essex opponent. It was nip and tuck for the next few ends with both players bringing off some excellent shots. With one end to go Neil was 2 shots up putting immense pressure on his skilful opponent and with the crowd waiting in anticipation heplayed an outstanding bowl to take 2 shots and level the match at 14 each!!
So an extra end had to be played and the toss was vital. Unfortunately Neil lost the toss and his opponent had no hesitation than asking Neilto bowl first. After Neil’s 2 bowls and one from his opponent Neil was holding 2 shots. Once again the crowd were silent as the youngEssex player bowled what was to be the last bowl of the match. It looked good and held its line to drop centimetres inside Neil’s nearestbowl and the match was over.
Our hearts sank and Neil looked absolutely “gutted” but ever the gent he simply congratulated his worthy opponent and thanked the marker. As he walked off the green In saw a steely look that simply said “I shall be back and I shall win!” – I have no doubt that next years finals(which are to be held at Leamington Spa) will see Neil Gould playing once more in the Nationals. Well done Neil; you have made EarlsBarton and Northampton Bowls proud.
Bad luck in the England Finals

This victory and another trophy for the Club makes it a season to remember and Captain of the Rushden “B” team,Alex Ellis was delighted with the teams performance and grateful to Neil Gould for stepping in at the last minute as our Club PresidentRichard Paintin was not available.

The Earls Barton and District Historical Society Frank Batten writes…The Historical Society’s Annual visit took members to Desborough and Rothwell in July. Around twenty members and guests were made verywelcome at the Desborough Heritage Centre where we were given a brief history of the town, significant events and archeological finds and the impact of the Co-operative movement. in the afternoon we went to Rothwell for a very informative talk about the famous bone crypt and (of course) a descent into the crypt itself. Our new season of talks begins in September with a presentation by Derek Blunt entitled Landmarks, a talk about the county’s parish churches. Mothers’ Union Visit to Canons AshbyWhat a joy! We were blessed with lovely weather when tenmembers visited Canons Ashby House in early August. We weretreated to a private tour by the House’s knowledgeable andenthusiastic conservationist. And we learnt how the National Trusthas changed its ethos over the years. I’m sure many readers willhave noticed this for themselves and how the Trust is trying to makevisits as interactive as possible. Remember ‘The Manor Reborn’, theTV programme hosted by Penelope Keith? Its subject, AveburyManor, is well worth a visit if you are ever in Wiltshire. But, back atCanons Ashby we heard how sunlight, dust, damp and creepycrawlies are dealt with, including the infamous death watch beetle. We had time to explore the house and gardens (recently restored toan original design); the church; book shop; plant centre; shop andthe tea room! If you have been before you may find there issomething new since your last visit as there are more rooms open. There are also plenty of activities for the children and we werefrequently overtaken by groups of enthusiastic youngsters on amission. Altogether a delightful day out.
Our next meeting is at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 4 September at 69Spring Gardens when Sara Ridley will be speaking on ‘The seeds wesow’. Following that there will be a Deanery Bazaar in All SaintsChurch Hall, Midland Road, Wellingborough from 9.30am -12noon onSaturday 7 September. Our branch will have a second hand booksand CDs stall, any contributions will be welcome. More details fromBranch Leader, Kathleen Davison on 811452.

LIVE BELOW THE LINE:
How did you do?Over the past few months the All Saints Church
Social Responsibility Group has been inviting people
to think about the problem of world hunger.
In June we invited people to take part in the Live
Below the Line challenge, spending only £1 a day on
food for five days. We would like to gather people’s
thoughts on the experience to write an article for the
village magazines.
Please take a few moments to think about your
experience and email me on:
We are particularly interested to hear:
• Why did you decide to take up this challenge?
• What was it like to shop with only £1 a day
• What did you eat?
• How difficult was it?
• What did you learn?
• Has the experience
changed your thinking
or shopping patterns?
We look forward to receiving
your views and hearing
about your experiences.

Preachers in September 2013 atthe Baptist Church are:
Sunday 1st Stephen Spandl
Sunday 8th Lesley Emerson
Sunday 15th Brian Emerson (Harvest)
Sunday 22nd Tony Cullum
Sunday 29th Laura Partington
News and Views from the Baptist ChurchOur Harvest Thanksgiving Service is on15th September at 10.30 am with HarvestSongs of Praise at 3pm. Do come along.
Brian Emerson writes....Unusually for a Baptist Church the villageone has stained glass windows. Two of them are in the entranceto the main church and two others are in the hall. Actually, theyare not in the hall itself but in fact, one in the kitchen and one inthe equipment cupboard. These latter two are there because thebuilding was originally part of the village school. The one in thekitchen is of the sower, based on the parable that Jesus taughtwhich is found in Matthew’s, Mark’s and Luke’s gospels. Jesushimself called it the parable of the sower but, interestingly, inmodern translations the heading is the parable of the soils – whichis actually nearer the mark.
While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming toJesus from town after town, he told this parable: ‘A farmer wentout to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fellalong the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up. Somefell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants witheredbecause they had no moisture. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. Still other seed fellon good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times morethan was sown.’ Jesus goes on to explain the meaning of theparable saying that we are all one of those four different types ofsoil. The question is whether we are good soil.
But this parable can also be applied to our every day living andlearning. When we show the junior or infant school children roundthe Baptist Church we explain to them that they can just as easilynot listen to their teachers, be distracted by other things and notlearn as well as they could.
We are all a soil of a certain type and we need to make sure thatwe are the right sort of soil so that good things can take root inuse. We are all sowers as well. Is what we sow to our children andto all the numerous people we come into contact with good seed?Do we set a good example? Do we set the right standards? Do wegive them good advice? And then when we have done that, do wenurture the seed to help it to grow strong and healthy (and I don’tmean physically here but morally and spiritually)?
Soil, sower, nurturer but also harvester. It was always good, as ateacher, to see the results that pupils and students achieved intheir exams. It was also disappointing when they did not do as wellas hoped for or expected. It was more disappointing though to seepupils who did not achieve their potential because of the way thatthey had not concentrated or had not learnt. Jesus also calls us tobe harvesters, to bring people into his kingdom. Jesus said: “I tellyou, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe forharvest. Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvestsa crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may beglad together.” (John’s gospel chapter 4 verses 35 and 36)
Ultimately it is God who gathers us into his kingdom if we havebeen good soil and the seed has grown in us. In the words of ahymn written by William Young Fullerton “He shall reap the harvesthe has sown.” Where do you fit into this?

Barton Today September 2013
The Feel Good FactorySeptember, a time of new beginnings and fresh starts.
Children are going back to school, to new teachers,
classrooms and for some new schools. They will all look so
smart on their way to school – might not be quite so tidy by
the end of the day though. This month I want to think about
fresh starts we could make for ourselves in a bid to feel
better.
The end of the summer holidays can feel like a huge anti-
climax for many people, and can even trigger a dose of post
holiday blues. This is hardly surprising, as your relaxing time
in the sun becomes a distant memory, replaced with a
groaning email inbox, a mountain of dirty washing, stacks of
bills to pay and grey skies overhead. Don’t let a bout of
post-holiday glums be an excuse to give up on things.
Switch your perspective and look at this time of year as a
new beginning. Think about all the things you can, and will
do to feel better about yourself.
You may well have heard the Change4Life adverts on the
radio recently, heralding their six week challenge. This starts
on 2nd September and encourages you to sign up for as
many of the following as you like:
- stretch your legs
- 10 minute moves
- screen-time switch
- beat the treats
- super lunches
It is aimed at families to encourage healthier children, but it
applies to many adults too. I know I could do with swapping
some screen time for more active time. Have a look at their
website http://www.nhs.uk/change4life/Pages/change-for-
life.aspx
Many of us find that we have different routines over the
school summer holidays, now is the time to think if anything
needs to change back. Have you been less active over the
summer? Perhaps the class you attend stops over the
holidays, will it be starting again soon?
Will you be going again? Think about how your routines have
changed. Ask yourself if they are an improvement or not. If
they aren’t then decide what you need to change and do it.
I am looking forward to the walk to and from school every
day, it definitely helps me to keep more active.
Now is a great time to have a sort out. If you do have
children, sorting out their bedrooms seems to be popular in
September. After 6 weeks of playing there can be a lot of
tidying and reuniting of parts. Think about other places that
can do with a sort out. When did you last empty your food
cupboards? I find it quite therapeutic to empty them
completely and put everything back in tidily.
It may take a bit of time to do, but afterwards I know exactly
what is in the cupboard and where it is. Makes cooking
much easier if you can find what you are looking for. Doing
the same with your wardrobe can be good at this time of
year too. Putting away your summer wardrobe and getting
all your winter clothes ready to wear – hopefully we won’t
want them too early in September.
Next month I will be sharing with you some more successful
WeightWatchers members from our Earls Barton meetings.
If you would like any information on WeightWatchers please
do contact me at [email protected] or go to the

about joining us but are not sure it is for you, pop along to
one of the meetings at St John’s Ambulance on Tuesdays at
7pm or Wednesdays at 9.30am and you can just sit in for
one to see what we are about and decide if it is right for you
– no obligation to join. The ProPoints plan is so flexible
anyone can follow it and lose weight. If you have any

Pupdate - A Big Hello from Tasmin! Tasmin - Guide Dog Pup number 5! She came home with us in full voice (notvery keen on the car), and as for her first night here - I'm surprised she didn'twake up most of New Barton...... She objected so much to being away fromthe rest of her litter...... but thankfully, since her first unsettled night, she hasbeen very good (fingers crossed).
She is a lively little thing, and has very sharp teeth! She is fascinated withslippers, shoelaces, and especially with our Granddaughter Jodie's socks! Weall have several new piercings.... Ouch! She also has a thing about our heavilypregnant Daughter’s bump - and tries to dig the baby out!!!!! She lovesplaying with her bowl after dinner, and getting up to mischief with anythingshe can get her paws on (as you can see in the photo)
By the time you read this, Tasmin will be taking short walks in our streets, soyou may have met her already. She adores walking in the Swansgate centreand the supermarkets. In fact she goes at quite a pace, but as a Guide Doghas to lead the way, we are just going at her speed for now. Hopefully Tasminwill soon get to visit the Junior School. We are sure everyone there will enjoy seeing her.
We have heard from Sandy's Trainer, Liz, who said she has settled in well, and is very confident... Great news..... She also loves playingwith other pups her age, and is being a very good girl. We will let you know when we hear more. Must rush - Puppy needs her nextmeal (currently 4 times a day!!!!)

Local resident Karl Tullett writes....It was the whole reason fortravelling to the Dominican Republic. Having done some researchat home I'd read about the trek up to the El Limon waterfall, thelush green vegetation, the jasmine perfumed air and of coursethe chance to spot some Humpback whales.Yet, despite myhomework I was not prepared for what turned out to be one ofthe most fantastic days I've ever spent on holiday.
The bus collected us from the hotel at 6.30am and we headed
off to the airport. We paid more, obviously, for travelling by air -but the other option was 5 hours on a bus each way, no waterfalland a much more rushed experience while in Samana, andSamana is not a place to be hurried.
We boarded the small propellered islander and flew over the eastcoast, admiring the crystal clear blue water and white sandybeaches. 35 minutes later we landed on a palm fringed runwayand were welcomed with a rum and coke and the friendly, smiling faces of our guides for the day.
After the introductions we climbed aboard the Caribbean bus tothe rhythmical Merengue beat and set off into the mountainous, palm tree lined countryside. Our guide was both informative andentertaining without sounding rehearsed
while we drove through ramshackle villages. The locals wouldshout and wave at us, some even attempting high fives as wepassed by.
Our first short stop was a local's home, where he and his familywould sit and make cigars all day, probably smoking half of whatthey made during the process while sipping on Mamajuana - aDominican speciality cocktail.
A friendly little barter later and we were off again, this time witha few cigars in tow and a Mamajuana warming our insides as thesun warmed us on the outside.
The next stop was at El Limon falls. To get to the waterfall youtrek on horseback through tropical forest for half an hour, passingthrough streams and ducking below low hanging branches onyour way. Each horse comes with its owner and guide to helpyou with any questions, run off to get samples of the plants, explaining what they are, and will take any photo you want -although they are not natural David Baileys to be fair.
The track the horses follow are muddy and very rocky, and myguide became invaluable to my partner, Maria. Her horse mis-
footed and slipped, collapsing as her legs crumpled beneath her.She went from being 9 foot high, to down on the ground in asplit second.
Thankfully Maria managed to slip out of the stirrups and get offthe saddle in time, but was on the wrong side of the horse asshe rolled around trying to get up. Maria’s bag had also hookedover the pummel on the saddle, leaving her attached to ananimal that was only interested in getting up and bolting.
Thanks to her guide, he managed to settle the horse and settleMaria - making sure they were both OK before helping her getback in the saddle. Now, don't get me wrong, despite this littlemishap we thoroughly enjoyed the trek, albeit a little moretentatively, and would absolutely recommend it to anyone.
As you approach the falls you dismount and finish the trek onfoot. There is a rather steep section of rocky, slippery steps andagain the guides are there to help you every steep step on theway down, and, thankfully, back up again.
The waterfall itself is beautiful, with a big natural, deep pool thatyou can swim in. I decided to take full advantage of this, thewater was bath warm, and I swam under the falls finding myselfin untouched caves. A short while later we were back on thehorses and making our way back while enjoying the refreshingtropical rainstorm that lasted about 5 minutes. The rain did notdampen our spirits, it merely enhanced the myriad of coloursaround us and gave a fresh scent to the air.
After a quick and lovely lunch on a secluded beach we set off tofind the whales.Gently riding thewaves the guideonce againenthralled us allwith his childhoodmemories of whalewatching whilefishing with hisfather, indulged uswith as muchinformation andhistory we wantedabout the area andmigration, taught uswhat to look out for- a plume of watererupting from thesea like a volcano -and told us howSamana protectsthe whales andwaters in the area.
There are only 2watching boats out at any one time, during the months ofDecember to February, when the whales have their young, NOfishing vessels, NO trade vessels and NO aircraft are allowed inor above the waters during this season, as the whales need theirwaters to be as free from human intervention as possible.
The watching boats must not get within 50 meters of the whalesand each boat has a wildlife protection steward on board to makesure this is adhered to and log the times and sightings of thewhales, should there be any.

Barton Today September 2013
Suddenly there's a shout 'Over there!' (more accurately'la-bas!' as most others on the trip were French) and its lifejackets on and full steam ahead.
Bouncing and crashing as we sped along, getting soakedby the spray and the wind whipping our hair into some kind offrenzied bouffant, the excitement was building faster than ouracceleration.
As we approached the whales the speed was cut and wedrifted along with the whales swimming alongside.
We were lucky as we had spotted a family of 3. Mum, dadand a 2 week old baby. Mum kept pushing the baby out ofthe water, teaching him to breach and all of them wereplaying, amazing us with body slams, tail splashes and rollson the surface - almost as if they were waving to us withtheir enormous flippers.
We stayed with them for an hour before heading back. A full 60 minutes of hushed awe and spontaneous smiles- and yes, maybe even a little bit of teary eyed-ness.
I was perched on the side of the boat - camera poised andclicking away and feet dragging in the warm waters absorbingthe moment, fixing the images firmly into my memory as wellas my camera.
It was with hope and a heavy heart as we turned the boatround to head back to shore.
Hope for this new family and the trials they face throughouttheir lives, and the heavy heart knowing what they may haveto go through, and of course the fact that I was now leavingand wouldn't see them again.
The last part of our journey was a chance to relax on the islandwhere the Bacardi adverts were filmed. I could have been sat inthe same chair as George Clooney on the beach!
We stayed in the shade and enjoyed a coke a Coco Loco, served in a freshly chopped coconut. With some helpfrom our amazing guide, Maria managed topurchase the perfect picture from a localartist to remind us of this day and of theholiday as a whole.
The day was over and we made our way throughthe bustling streets of the town and took our flightback to Punta Cana. The bus journey from the airportto the hotel, Dreams Punta Cana, was quiet, witheveryone reflecting on their day.
The sky was a rich, brilliant orange as the sun set, silhouettingthe palms against it and on the radio Snow Patrol's Chasing Carswas playing - a song I had nevermuch liked before, but now I foundmyself listening to the gentle singingfrom Maria and whenever I hear itnow it will take me back to Samanaand remind me of the honour I had tospend time with the magnificentwhales.
