BACKGROUND ON PRAYER (developing our personal prayer life) Prayer presumes several beliefs to be true: - that there’s One beyond each and all of us, beyond all that is around us; - that this One (God) cares enough to bother with us; - that God cares enough to want our response; - that God cares enough to respond to us; - that God is effective enough for that response to make a difference. Prayer relies on a belief in God. It is a “Yes” to a God who has already said “yes” to us. If you pray with the core of your being and surrender to the Lord, you will get the power to carry out what God wants of you, because you will be doing what God wants you to do, and God has promised to help. You yearn for the spiritual because God loves you. The Spirit opens you to that love, so you hear the Word’s call for a response to that love. The response is that we yield ourselves to the One calling to us. Prayer, spiritual devotions, services, and worship are sides of the facets of that response. The important thing to remember is that it’s not about you, nor prayer or worship or learning or ‘spirituality’. It’s about God. Prayer Positions We pray not only with our mind and our heart, but we pray with our whole selves, and that includes our body. Different body positions can aid us in the various forms of prayer standing with hands raised is typical of praise, celebrative prayer and the giving of thanks, kneeling and prostration show humility and recognition of our dependence on God sitting, head bowed, eyes closed, hands folded helps us to focus on God and to avoid distractions. These positions can help you pray, by getting your body into (or sometimes out of the way of) your prayers and a way to express what the pray is for. But the body positions themselves are unimportant to God. They are useful for your own benefit. The key is that you are having a living response with God, speaking and listening. Whatever position your body is in (sitting, standing, kneeling, laying, or walking,) God is still paying attention. Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. BACKGROUND ON PRAYER (developing our personal prayer life)

Prayer presumes several beliefs to be true: - that there’s One beyond each and all of us, beyond all that is around us; - that this One (God) cares enough to bother with us; - that God cares enough to want our response; - that God cares enough to respond to us; - that God is effective enough for that response to make a difference.

Different body positions can aid us in the various forms of prayer — standing with hands raised is typical of praise, celebrative prayer and the giving of thanks, — kneeling and prostration show humility and recognition of our dependence on God — sitting, head bowed, eyes closed, hands folded helps us to focus on God and to avoid distractions.

Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ,

and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. “Words Can Kill”

Where there is God there is no hatred, envy or jealousy, and there is no gossip that can kill. This was the message at the heart of Pope Francis’ homily as

he celebrated Mass in the Casa Santa Marta after the summer break. The Pope first reflected about the meeting between Jesus and the people of Nazareth as recounted by the Gospel according to Luke. The Pope noted that the people of Nazareth with whom he had grown up, admired Jesus, but at the same time expected great things from him: “they wanted a miracle” to be able to believe in Him. And when Jesus told them they were without faith, they were filled with fury, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill to hurl him down headlong”. Pope Francis reflected on the reading pointing out that a situation which had started off with admiration was to end with a crime: they wanted to kill Jesus. Because of jealousy and envy. This – he said – is not just something that happened two thousand years ago: “this kind of thing happens every day in our hearts, in our communities”. And he made the example of when somebody new enters a community,

on the first day – he said - people speak well of him; on the second not so well; and from the third on gossip and badmouthing starts to spread and end up skinning him”. The Pope elaborated on the concept quoting from the first letter of St. John 3, 15 in which he says: “He who hates his brother is a murderer”. We are used to gossip – he continued – “but how many times our communities, even our families have become a hell in which we criminally kill our brother with words”. A community, a family – the Pope continued – can be destroyed by envy that sows evil in the heart and causes one to speak badly of the other”. In these days, Pope Francis said, days in which we are speaking so often of peace, we see the victims of arms, but we must also reflect on our daily arms: “badmouthing and gossip”. Every community – the Pope concluded – must live with the Lord and be “like heaven”. “So that there is peace in a community, in a family, in a country, in the world, we must be with the Lord. And where the Lord is, there is no envy, there is no criminality, there is no hatred, and there are no jealousies. There is brotherhood. Let this be our prayer to the Lord: never kill your neighbor with words”. -Pope Francis

Pray A Rosary

October Month of the Holy Rosary

Tradition tells us that the Rosary (as a form of prayer) was given to St Dominic (1170-1221) by Mary, the Mother of Our Lord. The practice of dedicating the entire month of October to the Holy Rosary developed toward the end of the last century. Pope Leo XIII (papacy: 1878-1903) strongly promoted the increase of devotion to the Blessed Mother by encouraging the constant praying of the Rosary. Pope Benedict XVI also encourages us to pray. He said recently; “Today, together we confirm that the Holy Rosary is not a pious practice banished to the past, like prayers of other times thought of with nostalgia. Instead, the Rosary is experiencing a new Springtime. Without a doubt, this is one of the most eloquent signs of love that the young generation nourish for Jesus and His Mother, Mary. In the current world, so dispersive, this prayer helps to put Christ at the centre, as the Virgin did, who mediated within all that was said about her Son, and also what He did and said. When reciting the Rosary, the important and meaningful moments of salvation history are relived. The various steps of Christ’s mission are traced. With Mary the heart is orientated towards the mystery of Jesus. Christ is put at the centre of our life, of our time, of our city, through the contemplation and meditation of His holy mysteries of joy, light, sorrow and glory. May Mary help us to welcome within ourselves the grace emanating from these mysteries, so that through us we can “water” society, beginning with our daily relationships, and purifying them from so many negative forces, thus opening them to the newness of God. The Rosary, when it is prayed in an authentic way, not mechanical and superficial but profoundly, it brings, in fact, peace and reconciliation. It contains within itself the healing power of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, invoked with faith and love at the centre of each “Hail Mary”,

During the month of October join us in praying the Rosary of the Blessed Virgin

Mary every Thursday at 7:00 pm

REFLECTIONS BY POPE FRANCIS

“We do not become Christians by ourselves. Faith is above all, a gift from God which is given to us, in and through the Church.” “Every marriage has difficult moments. But these experiences of the Cross can make the path of live even stronger.” “Where we find hate and darkness, may we bring love and hope, in order to give a more human face to society.” “Do we truly pray? Without an abiding relationship with God, it is difficult to live an authentic and consistent Christian life.” “Each child that is unborn, but is unjustly condemned to be aborted, bears the face of Jesus Christ, bears the face of the Lord, Who, even before He was born, and then as soon as He was born. experienced the rejection of the world.”
