Thank You for 136 Summers of Fresh Air FunCAPITAL REGION – The Fresh Air Fund celebrated its 136th summer of serving New York City children! Thank you to all our dedicated host families for opening your hearts and homes to a New York City child. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has pro-vided free summer vacations to more than 1.7 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air children experience simple pleasures like running barefoot through the grass, gazing at star-filled skies and creating memories that last a lifetime. Through the eyes of Fresh Air children, families often rediscover the beauty of their own communities. For more information on how you can sign up to become a volunteer host next summer, please contact Lisa Bladecki at 603-387-1870 or The Fresh Air Fund at 800-367-0003. $1.00 OFFHigh on Horror -- Why We Pay Big Bucks to Be Scared (NewsUSA) - We crave chills.
It's why we get a rush when we see Jason take his axe to some unsuspecting teen in “Friday the 13th” or why we can't seem to look away when Carrie, dripping with pig's blood, incinerates her entire high-school class.
While mesmerizing, to be sure, the real question is: why do we pay for the pleasure of being scared?
On this, there are various schools of thought.
Some believe that fans of horror (be it movies or books) don't actually experience fear, but are excited instead, while others believe that people are willing to endure the terror because they know there is no real threat, that they are essentially safe. Still others feel that moviegoers are willing to be scared in order to feel a sense of euphoric relief at the end.
Whatever the reason, movie studios like Seven Arts Pictures, a Los Angeles-based indie movie production company, are counting on customers who are willing to pay to be petrified, by releas-ing a horror flick like “Night of the Demons”. In the movie, three friends attend a party held in a mansion where, years prior, six people disappeared and the owner hung herself.
“We think that people have a morbid fascination with the dark side,” said Peter Hoffman, CEO of Seven Arts. “So even though a horror movie might be illogical on an intellectual level, people still like to be uncomfortable on an emotional level. It's about people facing their fears” he added.
Which makes sense and explains why many of us have (reluctantly) stuck our hand down the garbage disposal, just waiting for our fingers to brush up against something (or, perhaps, for the machine to turn on by itself, shredding the hand inside ? la Stephen King), or why we might refuse to put our leg out of the covers at night.
This, too, is why we keep creepy haunted houses busy at Halloween, why we tell ghost stories around the campfire and why we turn out for horror movies like they were giving away free popcorn.
It's because we like it.

Albany, NY (July 31, 2012) –Do you have a love for animals and want to support a great local cause? Join with the Gold-stein Auto Group and bring your empty bottles and cans to a Goldstein dealership and support the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society’s “Empties For Animals” campaign helps support the mission of the organization, includ-ing sheltering, adoption, education, advocacy and the preven-tion of cruelty to animals. This year’s goal is to raise $125,000, in honor of the Society’s 125th Anniversary. To reach the goal, the Goldstein Auto Group will need to collect more than 1,500,000 cans and bottles. The 2012 "Empties For Animals” campaign has raised over $46,000 during the first half of this year, an increase of $12,000 or 34% over the same period last year. The 2011 campaign raised a total

of more than $74,000 and collected 925,000 cans and bottles. Volunteers sorted all those bottles and cans, based on the originating distributor, which in turn generated $.08 per can or bottle instead of the regular $.05 redemption fee paid at stores. Monies from the program were used to benefit the more than 6,500 animals cared for by the Society in 2011. “We are very pleased to continue our partnership with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society and support the 2012 “Empties For Animals” campaign. We would like to thank all of our custom-ers and the members of the community who have generously donated to such a worthy cause,” said Alan Goldstein, President of Goldstein Auto Group.

Foxy
Ditto
Foxy is a unique-looking, spayed adult. We think she's a Basenji/Pit mix. It was recently discov-ered that she is a natural at agility! She is very smart & needs someone who will engage her. If you are interested in agility, you will have a great head start with Foxy. On a recent outing she tackled the seesaw effortlessly, went on to the jumps and ran the tunnel like a pro! When we have observed her with other dogs, she has gotten along well with them. She's been waiting
sooo long for her forever home.
*Ditto* is an 8-year old orange tabby. He is comfortable and warm with children and any
friends who visit. Ditto loves to meet you at the door when you come home and to lie next to
you when you sit down. He has such a wonder-ful bond and interaction with his sister Lucious; grooming and playing with her. His vaccinations are up to date and Ditto will make a wonderful
companion for you and your family.
*Lucious* is a 5-year old gorgeous long haired calico with the most loving personality. She
loves people of all ages. Lucious will go right to you and loves to sit next to you. She enjoys playing whenever you want. She is a wonderful companion and we hope that Lucious will be
adopted by a family who can love her as much as she can love them back.

Stars for Our TroopsCAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots or-ganization that is growing fast across the USA. We take re-tired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, remove the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Donations are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage.
