Neutered male, DOB: 06/17/2011. Breed: 1/2 Pit Bull & 1/2 Rottie. Color: Dark Brindle. Weight: approximately 75 pounds. BUCKLEY gets along with most dogs and likes kids. He likes cats, but they tend to be afraid of him. He does jump so we limit him to bigger kids. He gets very excited and needs some
time to calm down when someone new comes around. He’s eager to please and tries very hard to do the right things.
He’s very big and can be a little clumsy sometimes. He loves to run at the dog park in Ballston Spa. He’s been to the Farmer’s Market and did really well there with the people and dogs. He’s been to downtown Saratoga also and does well. He loves attention and thinks he’s a lap dog! He’s very protective and
barks at anyone who comes near his “home” until we let them get closer. He’s a very energetic walker and will keep you at a good pace. We do use a prong collar with him because we have a lot of wild rabbits around and he will try to chase them. I love the big lug, but it hasn’t been fair to him. We
can’t let him play with our older dog anymore because of her hips and they’re both dying to play.
Contact Patti at 518-368-2374 for more info.
Lilith
Bentley is a 3-year old neutered male Pomeranian, who is up to date on his shots and micro-chipped. He likes to ride in
the car and is good with older children and other small dogs, though he does not seem to be fond of cats. Bentley is house
trained and walks well on a leash.
Bentley
Lilith is a 3-month old long haired white, brown, and gray tiger female kitten. She loves to play, carrying her toys around the house and then leaving them on your bed. After a busy day, she’ll snuggle right up next to
you to sleep at night. Lilith came from a feral cat colony and still can be a bit shy. She needs a special someone that will be patient with her, allowing her to take her time trusting you. She likes to make friends with any
animal she comes in contact with: dogs and cats.
Buckley
Kalhi is a 3-year old, grey and white, one-of-a-kind type of cat. She loves people and any attention she can get from her humans as well as other cats or dogs. She has many toes that make her look as though she has a hand: fingers and a thumb!

The New York State De-partment of Transportation (NYSDOT) will host two public open houses regarding a proposed project to make improve-ments to the Rexford Bridge on State Route 146 and at the intersections of Route 146 with Aqueduct Road/Williams Road in the Town of Niskayuna, Schenectady County and the intersection with Riverview Road/Alplaus Road in the Town of Clifton Park, Saratoga County. The open houses will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2014, starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Rexford Fire Station at 1601 Route 146 in Rexford (Clifton Park) and on January 30, 2014 starting at 7:00 p.m. at Niska-yuna Town Hall at 1 Niskayuna Circle in Niskayuna. The Nis-kayuna meeting will be a public hearing. A presentation on the project will be given at 7:00 p. m. followed by a time for public comments and questions. Staff from NYSDOT will be available to discuss the project in an informal environment before and after the presentation. Comments and input re-garding the project are welcome as part of NYSDOT’s con-
tinual effort to encourage public participation in the devel-opment of transportation projects. The project proposes to replace the Rexford Bridge and provide improvements to the intersections. The current preferred alternative adds lanes to the intersections and provides a multi-use trail between the intersections. The traffic signal at the Aqueduct Road inter-section is proposed to be replaced by a roundabout. There is currently no schedule for project construction. The Rexford Fire Station and Niskayuna Town Hall are accessible to peo-ple with disabilities. The Department of Transportation will provide interpretive aids or services if requested prior to the meeting. Anyone who has concerns or observations about this intersection project but who is unable to attend the open house may either contact Richard Filkins, Project Manager, at (518) 457-9756 or write to: Richard Filkins, Project Manager, NYS Department of Transportation, Region 1 Design, 50 Wolf Road, Albany, NY 12232.

GET THE FACTS ON STOMACH BUGS TO FEEL BETTER FAST
Few things can prove more painful or inconvenient than stomach bugs. Digestive tract illnesses can cause per-sons to spend many hours of the day running to rest-rooms while confi ning oth-ers to the house for extend-ed periods of time. Though often temporary, stomach bugs can last several days to more than a week and they may lead to more dire situations if not properly treated.
Causes: Stomach bugs are known as gastroenteritis, a con-dition characterized by an infl amed and irritated stomach and intestines. The Mayo Clinic says people are most likely to contract gastroenteritis after eating contaminated foods or drinking contaminated water. Sharing items, like utensils, with someone who is infected is another way to contract gastroenteritis. Viral gastroenteritis is caused by a virus that enters the body. However, bacteria and parasites also are responsible for stomach bug outbreaks. Viruses that trigger gastroenteritis include adenoviruses, rotaviruses, calcivi-ruses, astroviruses, and noroviruses. Bacteria that can cause gastroenteritis include E. coli, salmonella, campylobacter, and shingella.
Symptoms: Stomach bugs often strike suddenly. Suff erers may experience queasiness or nausea and a loss of appetite. Pain or bloating in the stomach also may occur. Vomiting and diarrhea often cause many people to suspect something is wrong, and some stomach conditions are also accompanied by fever, achiness and lethargy.
Treatment: Many people opt for a wait-and-see approach when struck with stomach bugs. Gastroenteritis often heals on its own. Some refer to it as a “24-hour-bug” and fi nd that once the stomach has been purged clean, the off ender no longer wreaks havoc on the body. But stomach bugs can be more persistent as well. Suff erers should visit a doctor if vom-iting or diarrhea last more than a few days. Doctors may take a stool sample to determine what’s behind the bug. In the event of a bacterial infection, an antibiotic may be needed to clear up the infection. Visiting a doctor when stomach prob-lems persist is also benefi cial because he or she may be able to rule out certain conditions, such as colitis, ulcers or Crohn’s

disease.
Helpful hints: When a stomach bug strikes, it is best to refrain from eating, especially when vomiting regularly. Stick to clear broths and liquids, which are easy on the digestive system, while the stomach is irritated. Once vomiting has subsided, suff erers should opt for a bland diet. When plagued by di-arrhea, the BRAT diet is adviseable. This acronym stands for Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast. These foods can help bind a person and are relatively easy to digest.
Because a stomach bug often leads to dehydration, drink plenty of fl uids. To restore salt and electrolyte balances, sports drinks are adviseable for adults, while a beverage like Pedialyte is best for children and the elderly. When symptoms begin to subside, suff erers can gradually add foods back into their diets. But men and women should avoid particularly spicy or heavy foods until they are convinced that they have fully recovered. Many people are tempted to turn to an anti-diarrheal medication at the fi rst sign of a stomach bug. How-ever, the side eff ects of gastroenteritis are the body’s method of ridding itself from whatever has brought on symptoms. Failure to let nature run its course could result in a rebound of symptoms or a longer-lasting sickness.
To avoid suff ering from stomach bugs, men and women should consider the following tips.
* Frequently wash your hands when preparing food and thor-oughly cook foods, particularly meats, poultry and eggs, to reduce potential exposure to bacteria.
* E. coli may be present on some fresh produce, so wash pro-duce carefully before consumption.
* Consider taking a probiotic supplement to increase the amount of good bacteria in your digestive tract. Yogurt also contains live cultures that are good at maintaining digestive health.
* Avoid contact with people who claim to have the stomach fl u.
* Promptly consult a doctor if symptoms do not go away or if you have a high fever or blood in your stool. This may indicate a diff erent illness.Stomach bugs are never en-joyable, but there are ways to manage the symptoms and get back on the road to recovery.

EASY WAYS TO ENJOY A FLU-FREE WINTER
Spending significant time in close proximity to others indoors can make people more susceptible to the flu. As a result, winter, when people typically spend more time indoors than outdoors, is often dominated by the sniffling and sneezing syn-onymous with the flu. But men and women can take steps to protect themselves from the flu this season.
* Get a flu shot. Some people prefer to avoid getting a flu shot because they want to build up their natural im-munities or they believe the shots can make them sick. But most flu shots contain an inactive virus that will not make you sick, and will only
trigger your body’s immune system response to a foreign invader. It can take a couple of weeks for full immunity to develop, so it’s possible to still get sick even after a flu shot has been administered. Also, a flu shot does not guarantee recipients won’t get the flu. People can still get the flu after receiving a flu shot, as it may be another strain of the virus. But flu shots are largely effective.
* Quit smoking. Smoking cigarettes and cigars can affect the immune system and also com-promise the body in a number of different ways. Smoking can disable mechanisms in your breathing passageways that serve as natural repellants to the flu. These include the hairs on the lungs that brush away contaminants. Smoking also can create holes in the lining of lower air passages, and such holes can make people more susceptible to illness, including the flu. Smokers who get the flu typically find that the flu further complicates their ability to breathe.
* Avoid sick people. When those around you are sick, it is best to keep your distance, especial-ly when those people have the flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that people with the flu can spread it to others up to six feet away. Flu viruses are spread mainly
by droplets of bodily fluids expelled during coughing, sneezing and even talking. This is why doctors recom-mend that anyone who has the flu stay home from work or school until they are fully recovered.
* Be especially cautious when pregnant. According to Dr. Cameron Wolfe, an infectious disease special-ist at Duke University Medi-cal Center, women who are pregnant are at a higher risk of complications and even death from influenza. Doc-tors don’t fully understand why, but many feel that because the flu can com-promise a woman’s ability
to breathe well, this makes it difficult for oxygen to be passed on to the fetus. Preg-nant women should speak with their obstetricians about the safety of the flu shot.
* Get plenty of rest and good food. Adequate sleep and a healthy diet can bolster your immune system. It’s important to stay hydrated, eat fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C and prioritize getting a good night’s sleep each night.
* Beware of homeopathic remedies. Always check with a doctor before adding any natural remedies to your flu-fighting repertoire. While some supplements like el-derberry syrup, zinc and os-cillococcinum can mitigate symptoms of the flu, there’s no solid evidence that these
items offer any preventative value. Homeopathic remedies also can interfere with medications or may be dangerous to a developing fetus, so do not take these substances without first checking with a doctor.

Governor’s Speech Encourages Celebrations of Diverse Heritage
Last week was quite interesting because I had the chance to spend the better part of two days in the presence of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, plus senior business and government leaders. It was inter-esting, enlightening and informative. He had a lot to say, on subjects ranging from taxes and regulation to casinos, marijuana and gender equality. As the post-speech coverage has illustrated, many different opinions have been formed among those who heard it, and most people will probably have points they liked and others they were less enthusiastic about. But there’s one part I really was motivated by: his comments about New York’s unique and diverse heritage. He remarked that New York has historically em-braced diversity, and as I sat there, surrounded by people of many ethnic and religious backgrounds, I thought of my own heritage. Being of mixed European descent, I am a product of the diverse culture that has made New York so great. Tech Valley is home to immigrants from all over the world who are here to build and operate our semiconductor factories and other global industries, so we will be introduced to even more cultures, traditions and viewpoints. We all have something to contribute to our community, and should learn how to effectively participate in our communities and in our political process. Now is
the time to get involved and help to improve our home-towns, and also to experience, respect and learn from those who come from different backgrounds. The Brook-side Museum in Ballston Spa has genealogy exhibits plus numerous video oral histories called “The Changing Face of Tech Valley.” To honor our county’s heritage, the Chamber’s Saratoga County Community Development Program is doing painting and cleanup work at the Mu-seum on Martin Luther King Day, January 20 from 10AM-3PM. BROOKSIDE MUSEUM TO
CLOSE IN JANUARY
BALLSTON SPA - The Sarato-ga County Historical Society announced that its head-quarters, Brookside Muse-um, will be closed during the month of January. “Brook-side has sustained some staggering losses in funding over the past few years,” said Joy Houle, Executive Direc-tor of the Saratoga County Historical Society. “This year (2013) has been particularly challenging since Saratoga County cut 100% support for the museum. Without that funding, something has to be cut. And we’d rather cut a month out of our year than a program like to Sheep to Shawl.” Brookside will be closed after December 31 and will reopen on Tuesday, February 4 at 10 a.m. The museum will host an open-ing reception on Friday, February 7 (6-9) for the tem-porary exhibit titled, “The Women Who Work Here,” which features the creations of the museum’s female staff, Board, and volunteers.

It’s great to have the cold snap behind us. As bad as it was, we knew that it would pass. When I think of cold, I always think of the 1816; a year nearly two hundred years ago that produced snow and frost in June, frost in July and another killing frost in August. 1816 was also known as “The Year There Was No Summer” and “Eighteen Hundred and Froze To Death”.
It seems that a volcano called Tambora explosively erupted in Indonesia in April of 1815. This eruption is regarded by many as the largest eruption in recorded history. On the Indonesian archipelago the impact was, of course, devastating with estimates of up to 90 thousand deaths. The size and violence of this eruption forced an estimated 100 CUBIC MILES of dust, ash and sulfuric acid into the stratosphere. Many scientists feel that this dust and ash was responsible for “The Year There Was No Summer”. Other theories involve sunspot activity and still other theories revolve around larger cycles of warm and cool climate conditions that occur every 210 years or so. Regardless of the reason or reasons, the tribulations of the summer of 1816 are legend and had a hand in, among other things, the migration of many New Englanders and New Yorkers out of those areas, and a wave of migration out of central Europe and England to the United States.
Let’s take a look at what they endured. The winter of 1815-1816 was a cold one that started early and lingered late. This was not uncommon and these northern farmers had endured many long winters and late spring cold. April and May were cold but most managed to get their crops in. By early June, the leaves were out on the trees, the corn was up and vegetable gardens were in and growing. It looked like the long winter was over at last. Then things began to go terribly wrong. On June 5th in Williamstown, Mass., the temperature was a balmy 83 degrees, warm for that early in the season. By the next morning, the temperature was 45 degrees and still falling. This cold arctic air wasn’t isolated to Williamstown. From Canada to Virginia cold arctic air caused killing frosts to occur June 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th. Thousands of birds that had recently migrated into the area from the south froze to death. Sheep, recently shorn, froze to death even though they were brought inside. Farmers built bonfi res around their fi elds to try to save the crops but all to no avail. The important corn crop was virtually wiped out along with most other crops. Even the leaves on all the trees froze, blackened and fell to the ground. There was light snow on June 6th in New York and New England and on the 7th and 8th, more snow was reported as far south as the Catskills. In Danville, Vermont the newspaper reports: “On the night of the 7th and morning of the 8th a kind of sleet or exceedingly cold snow fell, attended by high wind, and measured in places where it drifted 18 to 20 inches in depth. Saturday morning (8th of June) the weather was more severe than it generally is in the winter.” Standing water froze as far south as Philadelphia and in northern Vermont the ice was an inch thick. Even the ground started to freeze!
Remember that this is 1816. No one knew about a huge volcano thousands of miles away. Even if they did they had no reason to believe that it should have any effect on them. All they knew was that their crops were dead and, if they couldn’t get more in right away, starvation the following winter was a real possibility. Talk of famine and the wrath of God were widespread.
By the 12th of June, the outbreak of cold ended. The hard work of planting was repeated. Farmers knew that, in spite of the late start, they still had enough time to get a decent crop of corn and beans and such….if the weather cooperated for the rest of the season. For four weeks the weather held. The second planting sprouted and was growing well. Folks felt a bit foolish about their earlier fears and chalked it up to their renowned New England weather. Their good cheer was not to last.
At the end of the fi rst week in July another, although less severe, outbreak of arctic air spilled over New England and eastern New York. All the crops in the valleys (where most of the farms were) were again killed or badly damaged. There was no snow in July of 1816 but most felt that a widespread famine was inevitable. Those who could procure seed again replanted and everyone prayed. It seemed that God himself had turned against them. Many wondered what they had done to incur His wrath.
After the fi rst week of July, things returned to normal for a few more weeks. In addition to the cold in 1816, it was a dry year as well. In spite of their earlier failures, the farmers (which, at that time, was just about every-body) were optimistic that, if they got a break in September, things would be all right. You’ve got to remember that the only food they’d have the following winter would be what they could grow that summer.
Alas, another killing frost on August 20th visited much of New England and New York as far south as East Windsor, Conn. From Albany to Boston most of the crops again succumbed. Whatever survived that frost was fi nished off by an even colder spell during the last week of the month. As if that weren’t enough, temperatures dipped below freezing again September 11th and 12th. A more widespread frost at the end of September dashed any hope for crops that had managed to escape until then.
The winter of 1816-1817 was indeed a winter of despair; especially for the poor and sustenance farmers who were isolated and depended on their crops to survive. Many tried to survive on milk and bread but bread was in short supply. It was a blessing that the ocean off New England’s coast was so bountiful. The task of feeding New England fell to the fi shermen. Many landlubbers who had never eaten fi sh became very familiar with the taste of mackerel during 1817.
Beginning in 1817, there was a mass migration out of New England to the newly tamed (Indians fi nally killed or driven out) Ohio valley. The temptations of level ground and an easier climate were too much for many who managed to survive that terrible summer of ’16 and winter of ’17.
“The Year There Was No Summer” wasn’t strictly a Northeastern North American event. England, France, Germany and most of Eastern Europe endured a similarly disastrous season. It wasn’t as cold as New England in Europe but they had fl ooding and wet weather that resulted in crop failures of similar proportions. Food riots erupted in England, France, Switzerland, and Scotland as famished people broke into warehouses and took whatever they found edible. For many of these starving Europeans, the lure of the bountiful life in the United States was irresistible at that point. Unaware that conditions were the same on the western side of the Atlantic, they arrived in the New World only to suffer more privations. Many continued their exodus into the interior to begin settling the mid-west alongside recently displaced New Englanders.
Our modern transportation system would prevent famine if another “Year There Was No Summer” occurred now. When the rain and the cold get you down remember, it could be a lot worse. It’s disappointing and frus-trating trying to get a ripe tomato in 2000 but it’s nothing when compared to the trials the weather of 1816 put our forefathers through. Thanks for the read.

Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. YOU THINK YOU KNOW SNOW? FOLLOW THESE
SAFE DRIVING TIPS (NewsUSA) - Winter comes with a unique set of chal-lenges, including lower air temperatures, lack of visibil-ity, fewer daylight hours, fall-ing snow and, of course, icy roads. These can certainly make for some hazardous driving conditions, which is why experts say you should dig out your ice scraper, gloves and snow shovels be-fore hitting the road.
The safest way to prepare for winter driving is to be proactive before an emer-gency occurs.
The following tips will give you some ideas on how to drive safely all winter long:
* Surface Conditions. Roads and drive paths are likely to be covered with rain, sleet,
snow and ice, which causes slippery driving conditions
and reduces tire traction. Consider using snow tires in areas where winter weather is severe. It’s also important to inspect your tires for un-even wear, cupping and proper tread depth. Also consider the last time you had the tires rotated, bal-anced and aligned.
* Emergency Situations. Winter weather increases the chance of getting into a car accident. Pack an emer-gency kit to leave in your vehicle at all times. Consider including safety items such as fl ares, medical supplies, jumper cables, a fl ash light, batteries, a small shovel and tire chains. Also consider comfort items like blankets,
gloves and snacks.
* Clear Vision. Snow, ice and fog diminish your visibility, creating dangerous driving conditions. Remove all de-bris from your windshield, windows and outside mir-rors before driving.
Replace your wiper blades with extreme-weather blades for a stronger wipe to battle heavy rain, snow and ice buildup. The TRICO Ice wiper blade (www.trico-products.com) is designed to distribute even pressure for a clearer wipe, while the contour complements new vehicle models and maxi-mizes your line of sight.
* Vehicle Performance.
Follow the recommended maintenance schedule in your vehicle’s owner’s manu-al to avoid hard starts, stall-ing and lost power during colder weather. Keep your gas tank above the halfway mark because empty tanks collect condensation, which damages the engine.
