The Word of God for Today: The temptations Luke organises the temptations of Jesus to showcase some of the major themes. For Luke the ministry of Jesus fulfils God's promises to Israel. Thus, Luke is very respectful of Jewish traditions, institutions, and Scriptures. For this reason Luke places a special emphasis on the Temple, the visible sign of God's presence to the people. Luke begins the gospel with Zechariah in the Temple (1:8ff); he ends it with the disciples in the Temple praising God (24:52); the only episode from Jesus' youth, and the last story before his appearance as an adult, takes place in the Temple (2:46- 52). In this Sunday's episode Luke puts the temptation at the Temple in the third and climactic position (Matthew 4:5-7 has it second). Here, at the Temple in Jerusalem, the devil tempts Jesus to have God preserve him from death. Jesus' refusal to yield to this temptation foreshadows the time when Jesus comes again to Jerusalem to face his death. Then, he will lay down his life rather than throw it away. Jesus responds to each of the three temptations of the devil using only words from Scripture - he speaks no words of his own to the devil. Jesus quotes - and fulfils - Scripture. This highlights the centrality of God's word. It also attests to the power of Scripture which can be used to resist the power of the devil. Which brings us to the next point. Before Jesus begins his ministry, he confronts the devil, the most powerful of his adversaries. This confrontation is merely 'the first round', as it were. Every time Jesus exorcises demons, heals the sick, and restores the handicapped, he is attacking and subduing the power of the devil. The devil departs for a time, only to return when he induces Judas to betray Jesus (22:3); similarly, the proceedings that lead to Jesus' death are the time for the power of darkness (22:53). These temptations are the first salvo in a struggle that will last throughout the gospel. They reveal Jesus as 'the Son of God' (4:3, 9) who demonstrates sonship not in power but in fidelity. From Fr. Bernie:

The Season of Lent. During Lent our Sunday Masses will

commence with the Entrance Hymn “Come Now, O Word of God” which is new to us but easy to learn. There will be no

Recessional Hymn or music; instead we will depart in

silence.

The Stations of the Cross during Lent will be held at Banyo 6pm commencing on this Wednesday March 13th; at

Nundah 6pm they commenced on Friday March 8th.

The Lenten Program sessions have commenced. There

are parish group sessions after the Wednesday morning Mass and evening Stations of the Cross at Banyo and after

the Friday morning Mass at Nundah.

The Word of God for Today: The temptations

Luke organises the temptations of Jesus to showcase some of the major themes. For Luke the ministry of Jesus fulfils

God's promises to Israel. Thus, Luke is very respectful of Jewish traditions, institutions, and Scriptures. For this

reason Luke places a special emphasis on the Temple, the visible sign of God's presence to the people. Luke begins

the gospel with Zechariah in the Temple (1:8ff); he ends it

with the disciples in the Temple praising God (24:52); the only episode from Jesus' youth, and the last story before his

appearance as an adult, takes place in the Temple (2:46-52). In this Sunday's episode Luke puts the temptation at

the Temple in the third and climactic position (Matthew

4:5-7 has it second). Here, at the Temple in Jerusalem, the devil tempts Jesus to have God preserve him from death.

Jesus' refusal to yield to this temptation foreshadows the time when Jesus comes again to Jerusalem to face his

death. Then, he will lay down his life rather than throw it

away.

Jesus responds to each of the three temptations of the devil using only words from Scripture - he speaks no words of his

own to the devil. Jesus quotes - and fulfils - Scripture. This highlights the centrality of God's word. It also attests to the

power of Scripture which can be used to resist the power of

the devil. Which brings us to the next point.

Before Jesus begins his ministry, he confronts the devil, the most powerful of his adversaries. This confrontation is

merely 'the first round', as it were. Every time Jesus

exorcises demons, heals the sick, and restores the handicapped, he is attacking and subduing the power of the

devil. The devil departs for a time, only to return when he induces Judas to betray Jesus (22:3); similarly, the

proceedings that lead to Jesus' death are the time for the power of darkness (22:53). These temptations are the first

salvo in a struggle that will last throughout the gospel.

They reveal Jesus as 'the Son of God' (4:3, 9) who

demonstrates sonship not in power but in fidelity. (Taken

from Brisbane Liturgy’s ‘Liturgia’)

Joachim shared that he was overcome by a feeling of

being able to openly worship.

He’s come back and is invigorated to “wake up” the

and outside mass.

youth and give them the invitation to release their energy openly in a more vibrant praise and worship.

increasing the knowledge of what is happening in the

Mass; by helping members to better understand the Mass more fully and actively participate.

Joachim is open to ideas and suggestions from the

PPC members.

Joachim has reached out to the Missionaries of

Charity to see what outreach the youth group can be

involved with once a month.

The Holy Father’s Intentions for March Evangelization: That Christian communities, especially those who

are persecuted, feel that they are close to Christ

and have their rights respected. The month of March is dedicated to Saint Joseph.

Stewardship “I have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you, O Lord, have given to me.” (Deuteronomy 26:10) This line from the Old Testament offers two challenges.

First, do you give to God from your “first fruits”, the best that you have to offer, or do you give from what is leftover?

Second, do you recognize that everything you have has

been given to you by God? Ask God for a grateful and generous heart, every day, in all circumstances.

A Vocation View

A VOCATION VIEW: The world tempts us to grab all

we can. Even food becomes more when it is given

than when it is taken. Follow Jesus: be a giver. Be with me Lord when I am in trouble.

First Sunday of Lent 10

th March 2019

Thandolwayo, a 12-year-old girl in Zimbabwe, would walk seven kilometres each day to collect contaminated water for her family. She then went to school exhausted from hours fetching and carrying water. It looked like she would never realise her hope of finishing her education and becoming a nurse, until a Caritas Australia supported project created access to clean water helping Thandolwayo to stay at

school and achieve a future full of hope.

Please donate to Project Compassion 2019 to provide clean water and a future full of hope for vulnerable communities in Zimbabwe.

Lives change when we all give 100%. You can donate through Parish boxes and envelopes, by visiting www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion or phoning 1800 024 413.

Safeguarding Policy

The Archdiocese of Brisbane holds that children, young people and vulnerable adults are a gift from God with an

intrinsic right to dignity of life, respect and security from physical and emotional harm.

They are to be treasured, nurtured and safeguarded by all.

This means that everyone in the church must ensure that the fundamental rights of children, young people and

vulnerable adults are respected.
