Pastor’s Corner My Dear Friends, This weekend, Catholic Christians celebrate the 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time. In the Gospel selection for today, we hear 3 “lost and found” type of parables (Luke 15: 1-32). Jesus told us these to remind us of the joy of finding what was lost in our lives.

Fr. Gustavo has returned to Honduras, and he had a wonderful time visiting us. He will take back many memories, which he will cherish for years to come. I’m sure he’ll share many stories with his parishioners, so they will get to know more about us, just as I share stories with you so that you can get to know more about them. I hope he will be able to visit us at least once a year. Thank you for the wonderful hospitality you showed him! Happy Grandparents Day to all the grandmas and grandpas of our parish on this, your special day! Finally, don’t forget that our St. Mary Fall Festival is right around the corner. S. on September 11, 2001. The events of that day changed our lives forever and will not be forgotten.

Court 1036 is a small group of women dedicated to the needs of the parish and the community. Members assist annually with parish func-tions and complete a small service project at each meeting.

Elevator and ADA Construction Project Crews have been busy all summer renovating the Tileston Center! New ADA handicapped accessible restrooms have been added to the main and upper floors and the kitchens have been updated. The floors on both levels have been refinished and we're waiting for the arrival of the custom elevator. It will be installed within the next few weeks. We ask your continued cooperation as new restroom and kitchen areas are not to be used until final inspections have been complet-ed. We will notify everyone once that takes place.

Carolina Catholic learns about the newest biblical epic, Ben Hur (2016) For our first show in September, we speak again with Dr. Grazie Chris-tie, a medical doctor, mother of five, and a policy advisor for The Cath-olic Association. She writes and speaks in both Spanish and English about Catholicism, religious freedom, and the intersection of faith and science. In a recent article that she wrote entitled, "Ben Hur will make you want to be a better person," Dr. Christie describes the plot of the newest movie version of the 1880 book by General Lew Wallace, the deep and lasting impact that this retelling of the story of Judah Ben Hur had on her, and how we can all grow deeper in our faith as Christians when we learn to forgive the unforgivable. This show will air on Wilmington Catholic Radio on stations 91.7 FM, 93.1 FM, and 103.1 FM on Sunday, September 11th, at 6 p.m and can also be heard on our website at wilmingtoncatholicradio.com.

Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Mary Social Ministry/Tileston Outreach The Liturgy of the Word today reminds us that yes, we are sinners, but redeemed sinners saved through the mercy of our compassionate God. Here at the Outreach we enter into first full week of service of our 30th year inspired by the story of the Prodigal Son, or as some scholars put it, the “Prodigal Father.” Placed in the very center of the basement of Tileston is our Clothing and Household Departments. Each day there is a lot of activity among the dozen or more volunteers who spend time sorting, sizing and hanging clothing and arranging folded items and shoes on shelves. Each piece of clothing received is carefully examined so that it has neither stain nor tear. Our rule of thumb for receiving any donation is …”Would you give this to your brother or sister?” Just because people are in need is all the more reason why we strive to treat them with deep respect and reverence. We don’t give junk to our brother or sister so we spend a lot of time making sure that what we share with others always enhances their dignity. The Household Department has a great team of workers who spend their time sorting out dishes, glasses, flatware, pots and pans (so precious to receive – we are able only to give one to our guest when they request them), sheets, linens etc. When people come who have nothing they so appreciate receiving some of these items to help get their house being a home. Believe me, there is a lot of activity going on and each volunteer looks out for the other, assisting those who work directly with the guests by showing them where items are and helping them select just the right item so that the person being served will feel very special. And all this is recorded by our Administration Support Team who are super statisticians – Debbie Cochrane, Marge Kemp, Barbara Rusala and Ruth Ninos who addresses our “thank-you notes”. Bottom line – it is a team effort and when I pass through I am reminded of the saying, “It takes a Village to raise a child”, and it takes about 40 volunteers each day to serve our guests with care and respect and love.

The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal organization of Catholic men founded in 1882 by Servant of God Fr. Michael J. McGivney. The principles of the Knights are Charity, Unity and Fraternity and the Fourth Degree exemplifies Patriotism. Wilmington Council 1074 was founded on January 29th 1906. The current Grand Knight is John Schmidt. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month. Members of the Fourth Degree, called “Sir Knights” are part of Msgr. Christopher J. Dennen Assembly 2017, which meets on the third Tuesday of each month. Any practicing Catholic man over age 18 who wishes to join the Knights should please contact Grand Knight John Schmidt at [email protected]. We also welcome Knights who have moved to the Wilmington area and encourage these Knights to continue their Knighthood with Council 1074. Please con-tact Grand Knight John to transfer. The Knights of Columbus, Council 1074 will host a charity golf tour-nament on Monday September 26 at the Pine Valley Country Club in Wilmington to benefit two local charities: the Special Olympics and Step up for Soldiers. 2016 – 2017 Faith Formation Registration! It’s time to register for faith formation for the upcoming school year. We are offering classes from kindergarten through high school.

All faith formation classes begin on Sunday, September 18th from 11:00 a.m. – noon. Grade K-5 meet in the lower school and middle school/high school grades meet in the main Tileston Center.

Please do not send your child to class unless you have registered them. If you have not registered your child, please call the Faith Formation/Youth Ministry offices and we will be happy to arrange a time for you.

Upon registering, please supply a copy of your child’s baptism certifi-cate if you have not already done so. If you do not have a copy of your child’s baptism certificate, please contact the parish where he/she was baptized at, and they will be happy to provide you with one.

"Let your light so shine..." Matthew 5:16 We ended our first week together with our first school Mass planned by Mr. McFarlane and our 8th grade class. St. Mary students from K-8 were present. New students were welcomed along and our volley-ball and cross country teams were recognized and wished a successful season while representing our school. All of our “Specials” classes have met and hot lunch program and After School have begun. I mentioned to the students that on Sunday, Mother Teresa of Calcutta was canonized a saint by Pope Francis. During her earthly life she humbly provided a role model for the world to follow by serv-ing the poor. I am sure that there will be lots of information regarding this event on our Diocese of Raleigh website as well as on national news stations. Parents, please make certain to have all of your papers turned in

to the office. Drop and Go Lane (mornings) The curb closer to the lower

school is for “stop and drop” only. If you need to park your car and walk to the building, please park on the opposite side of the street.

Rainy Days – Please send your child with rain gear as all grade levels of students may need to go between the 3 buildings during the day.

School Closings/Delays – We follow New Hanover County School decisions.

St. Mary School Athletics Booster Board: The Booster Board is in need of a Recording Secre-tary and a Corresponding Secretary. The duty of the Recording Secretary is to record the minutes and send copies to the members. The Corresponding Secretary is in charge of sending out correspondence on behalf of our teams. Mrs. Frelke has volunteered to take over the position and grow our member-ship, strive to do what we can to help our teams, and to keep St. Mary athletics on the path to success.
