The Sister Isaac Center Mary Ann Kotas, Director
The other day, a young man came into the Center with his mother. He had done chores at home and earned $5.00; he want-ed to donate his funds to us. He had also been told that my article in the bulletin had mentioned a need for gently used toys; he brought in a basket full for us. He asked
for a tour of the Center and one of my volunteers showed him around. (I was in a meeting and was sorry I missed his visit.) His brother had pre-viously visited us with donations. We have young children involved in our outreach activities all year long. The St Mary School children are very involved. They are often seen bringing their canned food donations to us. Every year during Catholic School Week, they have a special drive to bring in hygiene type items for our guests. Our third grade class had a special project last November and presented me with $125.87. Some of our school children have an annual “Art Sale” for our Center under the auspices of one of our retired teach-ers; this year they raised $350. This has been happening for several years now; Sister always enjoyed visiting the sale in prior years. We still have some of their artwork on display. The children are a big part of our holiday activities; each classroom donates a full basket of food for a family at Thanksgiving. For Christ-mas, each classroom ‘adopts’ a child and provides special gifts of new clothing and toys for them.
St Mark’s children are involved as well; they, too, help with our holiday activities. Each year, one of their classes holds a ‘Baby Shower for Je-sus’ and gathers many new items for us to share with moms of infants. Another class comes over for a tour and brings canned food with them. On occasion, some of our volunteers bring in their child or grandchild to assist them; some help serve our guests, some help fold clothes, some help make the lunches their family provides, some ride along for a food pickup or delivery of holiday items. We are happy that the Center provides opportunities for the involvement of the school children that helps them develop an awareness of the needs of the less fortunate and ways they can be of help.
Special Need of the Week: Next Sunday is Share Sunday; please con-sider bringing a non-perishable food item when you come to mass next weekend. Since we close on July 31 for our summer break, we will not be able to pick up any furnishings until the first week of September; we’ll be spending the next week delivering items to our guests. The Sister Isaac Center’s last date for the summer is Tuesday July 31. We will then be closed until September (exact date to be an-nounced). 2018 – 2019 Faith Formation Registration! It’s that time of year again! It’s time to register for faith formation for the upcoming school year. We are offering classes from Kindergarten through high school. All faith formation classes meet on Sunday mornings from 11:00 a.m. – noon. Grade K-5 meet in the lower school and middle school/high school grades meet in the main Tileston Center. The following dates and times will be used for faith formation registration opportunities for the 2018 – 2019 school year: Saturday, August 18th and Sunday, August 19th – before and after each Mass in the lower school. Saturday, August 25th and Sunday, August 26th – before and after each Mass in the lower school. If these times/dates are not convenient for you, please call the Faith Formation or Youth Ministry office and we will be happy to arrange a better time for you. John Walsh at ext. 114 and Amy Preusser at ext. 117. Upon registering, please supply a copy of your child’s baptismal certificate if you have not already done so. If you do not have a copy of your child’s baptism certificate, please contact the parish where he/she was baptized at, and they will be happy to provide you with one. Mi-chael is a NJ architect whose firm specializes in designing and restoring religious buildings. In his book, Michael provides the reader with simple solutions for returning to the timeless truths that make our nation a place of peace and prosperity for many. In addition, Michael shares his own spiritual journey and those principles that can restore an individual, as well as a nation, to spiritual well-being. He volunteers in a diocesan pro-life ministry, Mary’s Child Pro-Life Ministry, where he serves as the incoming president. Anthony List, whose mission is to end abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders. Mar-jorie, a native of Greenville, NC, is a convert both to Catholicism and the pro-life movement, and she founded the Susan B. Anthony List in 1992 in order to ensure that pro-life Americans know where their lawmakers stand on protecting the rights of our unborn brothers and sisters. On July 18th, we held our annual ‘Thank You’ luncheon to honor our volunteers. They are the lifeblood of the Center.
Each day, we have about 25 working at the Center. They handle guest registration and interviews, fulfilling
guest’s needs, sorting clothing and housewares, managing furniture and incoming donations, clerical work and statistics gathering, replenishing supplies and hygiene items, shelving
and packaging food, handling recycling and trash, making repairs and improvements - it’s a busy place!
