Pastor’s Corner My Dear Friends, Today Catholic Christians celebrate the 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time. On this day, we read in the Gospel of Matthew Jesus telling his disciples, “And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because the little one is a disciple – amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward” (Matthew 10: 28-29).

This Tuesday, Americans celebrate Independence Day, the birth of our nation in 1776. This is a great time to reflect on our nation – our triumphs, our challenges, and how we can help make it a better place for all people. Finally, this Thursday, July 6th, we will have our Summer Anointing Mass at 7:00 pm. If you are ill in mind, body, and/or spirit, and have been baptized, you may celebrate this beautiful sacrament.

Sincerely yours in Christ, - Father Bob

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary – July 1 and July 2, 2017 5

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time The Sister Isaac Center Mary Ann Kotas, Director Summer is here and we've been really busy. We've reached our capacity every day for a few weeks now; so many in need of help for their rent or transportation, be it a bus ticket to get around town or gas for their car. We are fortunate to have a relationship with Shop and Go on 17th and Market. They accept our checks, so when we have a guest in need of gas, we send them with a check which is marked for "gas only". We estimate the cost of the gas depending on the size of their vehicle and we make the check out for that agreed amount. When they visit the station, they must show their id to ensure the person we are helping is the one buying the gas. If we have overestimated the cost, the attendants keep track of the "change" and refund it back to the Center later in the year. We are very grateful to Tolly and his staff for handling these purchases. Summer also brings some special volunteers. One young mom that is a Wednesday regular brought her daughter in to help over last year's summer break. This year when school ended, her daughter made a point

of letting her mom know it was time for her to come back to Outreach to help! A dad and his daughter that volunteered over the summer last year have now returned and brought another young lady to help. Several of our volunteers bring in a grandchild now and then. We've also met several friends or relatives of volunteers that are in town for a visit and they come in and help us out as well. The Center is all about volunteers; we are so fortunate to have so many of them. Their dedication is what makes the Center the successful place it has been for 30 plus years. Sister Isaac always joked that she didn't run Outreach - the volunteers did! And I agree. I may have stepped in as Director, but it's the volunteers that have kept things running smoothly. I'm grateful to each and every one of them for their support.

Special Need for the Week: Flatware. Thank you for all the Share Sunday donations.

RCIA (Beverly Setz) RCIA will be starting their next session in the Fall. Please watch the bulletin for details beginning mid-September. You can also call the office at 910-762-5491 ext. 121 for more information.

Violin Prodigy to Perform in Benefit Concert Lucas Gerbe, who began playing the violin in the first grade at St. Mary School and who now studies at the prestig-ious University of North Carolina School of the Arts, will per-

form in concert to benefit the Wilmington-based charity, Homes of Hope India. The concert will be Sunday, July 16 at 5:00 pm in the historic Basilica Shrine of St. Mary. “I owe so much to those who saw a spark of potential in this six year old kid,” Lucas said, “I am so proud to be back at St. Mary and to help the orphan girls that Homes of Hope has rescued from the streets.” Proceeds from the benefit will fund musical instruments for girls throughout the nine Homes of Hope in India. “I want those girls in India to have the same opportunity I did,” Lucas said, “music transformed my life. He will perform works by Kreisler, Bach, Shubert, Wieniawski and Bartok. Lucas Gerbe began playing the violin under the direction of Lorraine Westermark at St. Mary. As his musical ability became apparent he began studying privately with Redding Farlow Soderburg and Beverly Andrews, Concert Master of the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra. After his sophomore year of high school Lucas was accepted to The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where he has continued studying under the direction of Kevin Lawrence. St. Mary School Year in Review—2017

St. Mary Catholic School St. Mary Catholic School is dedicated to a total education program in grades Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. Simply stated, our school philosophy is that every facet of life is important: Spiritual, Physical, Educational, and Emotional. The faculty and staff strive to instill Christian values so that each student becomes a force of good in God’s world. At the same time, the educational program leads and encourages students to develop their intellect to its full potential. St. Mary Catholic School’s graduates are prepared to enroll in the honors courses offered by area high schools. The school’s emphasis is on preparing students to be independent learners who maintain high academic achievements and standards throughout their high school and college years. St. Mary Catholic School is the first Catholic school in North Carolina. The school was established in 1869.
