Pastor’s Corner My Dear Friends, In today’s Gospel passage from St. Matthew (18: 21-35), we learn that we are to forgive others. Not only do we need to forgive others once or twice, we are to forgive them unlimited times, for we are to imitate God whose mercy and forgiveness are limitless. This is easier said than done, of course. Perhaps that is why we never hear politicians and religious figures clamoring to build monuments with the words, “Forgive your enemies” chiseled on them. Today, Catholic Christians celebrate Catechetical Sunday. This is a day set aside to honor those who give their time and talents to teach the Catholic Christian Faith to children, youth, and adults. In many ways, this is a hidden ministry, for most adults who come to church on the weekends don’t see the catechists teaching in classrooms. In our parish, for example, catechists teach over 300 students while the rest of us are in church celebrating Mass. Thanks especially go to John Walsh, Amy Preusser, and the catechists in charge of the three RCIA ministries of our parish. The theme of this year’s Catechetical Sunday is, Living As Missionary Disciples. Sincerely yours in Christ, - Father Bob

All levels of learning are met through a progressive curriculum, which ac-commodates beginner, intermediate, and advanced students. The Sister Isaac Center Mary Ann Kotas, Director The Center has been a busy place since we opened on September 5. The Center looked great for opening day! It was fun to see the reactions of the volunteers as they returned to ‘work’; they were pleasantly surprised to see all the improvements that were made. All of these changes will help improve our ability to serve our guests. Our return from summer break reminds me of when students return to school each year: the vol-unteers were all happily greeting each other, shaking hands, hugging, comparing notes on their time off, and all were ready to get back to busi-ness. The volunteers form bonds over time and many friendships are formed. As a result of our Open House, we signed up several more volunteers to help us each day. In the coming months, there will be more opportuni-ties for volunteering outside of our normal hours – donating bag lunch-es, picking up food on weekends, working on our holiday projects. Watch this space! The Center has always closed for the month of August; it provides time to clean, make improvements and reorganize, but mostly it does provide
time for each of us to relax and unwind. At times, many of us do feel stressed when we encounter so many people in need of help; we see so many cases of hardship. Our month off gives us time to relax and un-wind, and returned refreshed and ready to work. When we opened our doors on the 5th, we were greeted by 43 people in need of help. It contin-ued to be busy each day, and we took care of everyone as best we could. I’m reminded of a quote from Mother Theresa that Sr. Isaac shared with me long ago. Whenever we feel overwhelmed by how many people we see suffering from poverty, it helps us keep it in perspective:
'Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time and always start with the person nearest you.'

Mission Corner
Picnics for the Homeless
Once a month, the Missionaries of St. Mary go to a local park to have a picnic for their families. They also invite the homeless to join them. It is not uncommon to have over 40 people come to the picnic. In this photo, we see some of the Missionaries getting ready for people to arrive for the monthly picnic.
Waiting for the Pediatric Clinic
One of the services Clínica Santa María in Reitoca, F.M., Honduras has been offering is a pediatric clinic. In this photo, we see people waiting for the clinic to begin. On the left we see pediatrician Fátima Lara and Nurse Yesenia Amaya.

OUTREACH - Thank you to all who supported the Dress Down Day last Wednesday with proceeds heading to Sa-cred Heart School in Rockport, TX. This was a wonderful example of letting our lights shine for
others. We had set a goal of possibly $1,000. The donations as of yester-day totaled $2,607!!! I have sent our a check for that amount. I will be adding a letter which will let the principal, Mrs. Kathy Barnes, know that we want this donation to go directly to the families in need. This week she was trying to locate her families to find out what they are all needing. The plan is for her to let us know and we can possibly collect items within the next couple of weeks. She mentioned that Rockport will hopefully have power restored soon. Reminder—Our handbook policy stat4es that we will follow the deci-
sions of New Hanover County School for closings and delays. CHESS CLUB - We have had a great amount of interest shown in creating this experi-ence for our students. Please check last week's newsletter for infor-mation that was attached regarding the sign up. During the week ahead, our Middle School students will be entertained by the Artist in Residence of the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra. Reminder - Monday, September 18th - NO SCHOOL, TEACHER WORK DAY PLEASE LINK YOUR VIC CARD TO ST. MARY SCHOOL #1809!
WE NEED YOUR HELP! We would like to share St. Mary School with more students. One way we share our news is on our 2 Facebook pages…one for the school and one for our Athletics. Would you please visit our Facebook pages, like them, and share them with others? Thanks so much!
St. Mary Athletic News Tony Viollis [email protected] GIRLS’ TENNIS: Mrs. Moore and I are hoping to have a few more girls come out for our girls’ program. If your daughter is interested, please get in touch with Mrs. Moore or me and we will get her signed up. VOLLEYBALL AND CROSS COUNTRY: The schedules are post-ed on the school athletic calendar as well as on my web page link. I hope you can come and watch a game or two. Most of all, I hope you can find some time to help me with our home contests in our Tileston gym. You can sign up for any of the needed positions, such as admissions table, concession stand, scoreboard, or lines person at Sign Up Genius. Please check your schedule and sign up to help. CHEERLEADING: We need a parent who would like to take over our cheerleading program. Some
knowledge of the sport is needed. If you are interested, please contact me. ST. MARY GOLF CLASSIC: We are planning a meeting for the end of September to talk about the Golf Classic. I will explain what I need in the way of help. There will most likely be two meetings on the same day, one at 2:00 pm before pick-up, and one in the evening. I will hand out information on the work that needs to be done to make the event a great success. I am happy to do most of the work, but I need you to reach out to others to get donations and/or sponsorships. More information will be coming. Any questions, be in touch. As most of you know, the doors to the gym are always open. Please stop by so we can get to know each other, to say “Hi,” or to offer a helping hand. It is truly a team effort! My goal every year is to make St. Mary better than the year before
and to make it special for all of our children.
Please help me do both!
