The love affair with range cookers isstronger than ever and shows no signs

of abating. Over the last couple of years the market has

been constantly evolving, responding to consumers’needs, with the key driver being choice. Impulse Bathrooms are for comfort seekersAccording to the latest UK census, our

population is 56 million people of whom16.4% are over 65 and 30% over 60.Government figures also quote the figure of 6million people registered as disabled, of whicharound 143,000 are considered permanentwheelchair users. This clearly shows there is alarge potential market for products which canimprove accessibility and which can be morecomfortable or easy to use.

Contrary to public perception, products designedfor disabled use are a much smaller demand thanproducts which enable people to continue to live abetter life in their own homes. However this is adifficult market to pin down because there are somany different needs. The 6 million registereddisabled range from less debilitating conditions suchas Diabetes (not to down play this illness) to totalimmobility – and there are many more people whomay be simply elderly or suffer impaired movementwho are not recorded but could still benefit greatlyfrom products designed to be of assistance.

In the bathroom sector, DocM installations are astandard for public disabled facilities and Lantacapproval covers the needs of the 2010 AccessibilityAct. In the private sector, the drive towards living athome (or Independent Living) fuelled greatly by thehuge cost of care homes and the potential loss of

the family home to fund this, has resulted in theintroduction of comfort ranges with higher heightWC pans, easy grip (or lever action) taps and mixers,taller washbasin pedestals to relieve the need forundue stooping. Issues of decreasing mobility are those thatmost need to be addressed in order to enable

people to live independently, one of the mostchallenging areas for those who may be lessmobile being the bathroom. Joanna Marstonof inclusive-living product specialist AKWexplains how a shower – with the right sort ofshower tray – provides the key to bathroomindependence.

When approaching bathroom design, one of thekey considerations is to look to the long-term.When designing for someone with limited mobility,it is also important to think about other users in thehousehold: someone who really needs an adaptedbathroom may feel reluctant to force ‘specialfacilities’ on other members of the family.

A solution that meets everyone’s needs and canplay an important part in future-proofing thebathroom layout is to install a shower. Conventionalshower enclosures do, however, have theirdrawbacks as the user has to step in and out – and,of course, they pose an obstacle for a wheelchairuser. Careful consideration must, therefore, be givento the type of shower tray and in order to choosethe most appropriate solution, there are a numberof issues that need to be looked at. The type offloor the tray is going to be installed into or on topof will influence the choice. So too will the area ofthe bathroom where the shower tray is to be fitted.Most common is a corner location, but there mightbe the requirement to use an existing alcove or tocut-to-length to suit the installation. Finally there isthe waste type to consider. All AKW shower trayscan be used with either gravity or pumped waste.

In creating a walk-in, rather than step in, showerenclosure there are three options: a low-accessshower tray, a level access shower tray or a wetroom. Low access shower trays are laid onto thefloor and do have a threshold to cross, albeit lowerthan a standard tray, which may necessitate the useof a ramp. Level-access shower trays have a stepless than 10mm high, which means that a showerchair can be easily wheeled across them. In a wetroom, a wet-floor former is installed, level with thesurrounding floor, which has an almostimperceptible gradient to assist drainage. The floorconstruction of the bathroom will often determinewhat type of tray can be used.

The wet-floor solution has become increasinglypopular, not least because it is seen as distinctlystylish and on-trend with modern bathroomdesign – a truly inclusive solution that will appealto everyone. It also has practical advantageswhere the shape or size of the bathroom poseslimitations or if the positioning of the waste outletcreates restrictions for using a shower tray. Thebasis of a wet room is the former, the choice ofwhich will determine location and finishingoptions.

Wet rooms are a very flexible solution and canoften be installed as an addition to the home,rather than simply a replacement to an existingbathroom. Options can include converting adownstairs cloakroom or even extending into anintegral garage space from a hallway. The appealof this for many homeowners is that it can be seento be an attractive, addition to the home, evenadding value to it.

To meet the growing call for wet-room solutions,AKW has introduced the TriForm® linear formerwhich offers a number of installation benefits. Beko sets its‘sites’ on a new look withweb refresh

To coincide with the launch of its latest TV advert Bekohas updated its UK website to give consumers an evenbetter experience with easier navigation and anintegrated look and feel with the brand’s on-goingmarketing initiatives.

Designed to ensure that customers can quicklynavigate to the product information or page they want,the cleaner layout features clear visual clues includingimagery to guide consumers through the site.

In addition to product specifications and information,the website will host the brand’s latest news, videos ofcurrent ad campaigns and advice to help consumerschoose their appliance.

IDS announces winner of itsnational design competition International Decorative Surfaces (IDS) hasannounced the winners of a national designcompetition for students to design aspectsof its new headquarters centred around itscore values of innovation, creativity andsustainability.

Winner was Martyn Webb, a BA HonsArchitecture graduate from the Universityof Portsmouth; second was Blaze Perrigo,studying BA Hons Interior Design atUniversity College Falmouth; and third placewent to Becky Spenceley, studying BA HonsInterior Design at Northumbria University.The winner received £1000 plus a hostedvisit to 100% Design in London in 2013,together with mentoring opportunities withthe company’s surface material suppliers.

IDS is re-locating to new purpose built premises at the Parkhouse Interchange in early 2014 housing a61,000 sq ft warehouse; 2500 sq ft showroom; 50-seat lecture theatre; and office accommodation. Theeco-friendly building will have the lowest possible carbon footprint utilising modern materials and buildingmethods including rainwater harvesting, grey water recycling and solar panelling.

Ideal Bathrooms revealsdynamic plans for Showerlux Following the acquisition of the soledistributorship of Showerlux shower enclosuresand bath screens for the UK, Ideal Bathroomshas completed a comprehensive review ofretail pricing and customer discounts whichhave been completely realigned to be fullycompetitive for today’s market. Over 80% ofthe range will now benefit from reduced priceswith many showing savings as high as 20%.

“The Showerlux name is a well respectedbrand and known throughout the industry,”says commercial director Danielle Lillis. “Theywere the pioneers of many design innovationsin the shower market and we are confident wewill take the brand forward to a successfulfuture. The pricing realignment is the next keystage to achieving this.”

A new interim Showerlux price guide has been produced until publication of the Big Yellow Price Bookin January; supporting literature for showrooms is being printed. Technical service support will continue tobe provided by Showerlux’s parent company Duscholux.

The interview was broadcast on BBC News Live as well as BBC WorldRadio, with a third interview being filmed for the local BBC Look Northprogram.

The stunt, which saw a braveInta employee take to theroundabout wearing little morethan a shower curtain, was carriedout in rush hour traffic earlier thisweek to mark the occasion.

Stuart Gizzi, director at Inta, said:“We have sponsored theroundabout for some time now andyou’d be surprised by how manycalls we get from merchants andinstallers telling us they passed itand saw our signs.

Granite Transformations - TV makeover shows help boosthome improvement trend Granite Transformations hasfound that growing customerdemand is being echoed byincreasing requests from homemakeover show producersincluding Channel 4’s YouDeserve This House and ITV1’sThe Alan Titchmarsh Show.

Conference this yeardelved into the RetailRevolution examiningexactly what is going on inthe high street and theinevitable effects of the internet on bathroom sales. Nine presentations andtheir subsequent discussions brought delegates bang up-to-date withretailing and inspired them with the latest accepted wisdom.

Hull went on to show how Google really can drive business and that anygo-ahead retailer must have a web presence with search tags which arerelevant. He suggested that Facebook is not necessarily the place to be but aTwitter account is a ‘must have’ to keep pace with the latest trends. He alsowent on to show that retailers should not be afraid of formal feedbackforums, TripAdvisor-style, and that actually, its people that matter most.

Other speakers examined the role of the High Street and how savvyretailers are embracing ‘click-and-collect’ which combines the convenienceof the web purchase with the visit to the showroom where ‘added value’can be created.
