BBBS LAUNCHES 100 DAYS / 100 BIGS!

By Sarah Walker Have you heard? BBBSMV has launched our 3rd annual 100 Days/100 Bigs volunteer recruitment campaign! In the 100 days between June 16 and September 23, we are hoping to enroll 100 NEW volunteer mentors to be matched with one of the over 200 youth on our waiting list. Through a generous partnership with KWQC, this community awareness campaign will be supported by regular airing of public service announcements featuring several of our current and past Bigs and Littles. Watch KWQC in the coming weeks to check them out! In addition, BBBSMV will be represented at many community events taking place over the summer, including the Juneteenth Festival on June 18 in Davenport, which resulted in 15 individuals asking to learn more about becoming a Big! Want to know how you can help with this initiative? Try any (or all!) of these:

● Talk to your friends and family about potentially becoming a Big. With BBBS’ RecruitOne campaign, you can earn a $20 gift certificate for BBBS gear for your Little when someone you refer enrolls to become a Big, and this new Big will also count for our 100 Days/100 Bigs campaign. Double Score! If you haven’t received a volunteer RecruitOne kit, let your Program Specialist know and we can mail or email these

helpful materials to you. ● Attend a community event with your Little and represent

BBBSMV to spread the word about how great being a Big is! Watch your email for information about upcoming events, as we will continue adding opportunities throughout the summer.

● Work with BBBS to coordinate a “Lunch and Learn” presentation at your place of employment, or with other groups you are connected with. Lunch and Learns are a great way for interested people to learn more about BBBS programs and what it’s really like to be a mentor.

BECOME A BETTER BIG! JAYDEN Jayden is a 12 year old Little in the 6th grade. He enjoys math and reading. Jayden has been matched with his Big, Jason Holtgrewe, for 5 1/2

years. Recently, Jayden and Jason went bowling, and Jayden’s first ball ended up being a strike. Jayden was pretty pumped and was excited to celebrate his first strike with his Big. Keep having fun Jayden!

RAVE ABOUT YOUR LITTLE!

Chris Chris is an 11 year old Little in the 6th grade. Chris enjoys math and loves sports. He has been matched with his Big, Tim Eastmen, for about 3 months. Chris and his Big recently went kayaking. While on

BIGS PRIVATE FACEBOOK GROUP: BIGS 4-1-1

Dear Match Coach, “I would like to attend some upcoming activities, but if something comes up and our match is not able to attend anymore what should I do?” At least once a month a match activity is held for our matches. A lot of planning and time are put into these activities, so it’s important for BBBS to have an accurate RSVP

number. If a match doesn’t come to an activity, that gives away the opportunity for another match to attend, especially if an activity has limited space. It prevents BBBS staff from enjoying the activities with matches as well. We wait to make sure everyone has arrived to be sure not to leave any match out. Something else to remember about our activities is that we have people or companies that sponsor our events. They donate time, food, money and space, so it’s important to support them and attend those activities. We understand that things come up and it’s difficult to plan activities far in advance with Littles. If that happens, please make sure, even if it’s the day of, to contact your match coach to be taken off the RSVP list.

DEAR MATCH COACH: MATCH ACTIVITY RSVPs

Ever wish there was a forum where you could chat with other Bigs about being a Big? BBBS-MV now has you

covered! Check out the BBBS private Facebook group, Bigs 4-1-1. Here you

will be able to access tons of information about mentoring and upcoming activities and events.

TIPS FOR CONNECTING WITH YOUR LITTLE ABOUT MATCH ACTIVITIES: If you think there’s a match activity that might interest your Little, try and get in touch with them as soon as possible. This gives the Little and their family time to see if the date and the time of the activity will work for their schedules. Always call or text the Little’s guardian to reconfirm if the Little is still available to go. A lot of times life happens and it’s always good to touch base a day or so before an activity. Still having trouble getting in touch with the

Little and their guardian? Reach out to your

Match Coach. Match Coaches are always

available to help if your struggling to

communicate with your Little and their family.

EGS EMPLOYEES CREATE ACTIVITY BOXES FOR 30 SCHOOLS

EGS employees began an “Activity Box” drive for Big Brothers Big Sisters on May 1. By May 31 they had collected hundreds of items such as books, crayons, markers, flash cards, games, scissors, glue, paper and much more to fill more than 30 boxes. Each box will be placed in an elementary school where we have Littles enrolled in the School-Based program. Matches meet over the Little’s lunch period and use the items in the

Activity Box to give them something to do, work on and have fun with during their visit. Big Brothers Big Sisters gives EGS a BIG THANK YOU! It’s great to see so many employees (close to 100) participating in the effort. To schedule a fundraiser at your workplace contact Beth Clark at 563-323-8006 or email [email protected].

There’s a lot happening in McDonough and Warren counties already this summer. From new matches to summer camp and weekend lunches to upcoming match activities. We have had an eventful month and we can’t wait to see what else summer has in store for us! New Matches Summer is usually slow for making new matches but we are off to a BIG start. We’ve already made four new matches in June and there is another in the works. You know that making new matches is the best part of the job, and all of our summer matches are kids that have been in the program for multiple years. We are very proud of these Bigs for stepping up, and very happy that these kids are being re-matched. Let’s meet them: Little Sister Julianna is a super nice kid, always with a smile on her face, and Big Sister Demri is a local girl looking to get involved in her community. (Demri's mom helped to deliver my son!) Nothing beats bringing together great people, and we see only great things in the future for this match. Big Brother David is a great guy who sets a

great example; he was a combat medic in the US Army, then came to WIU to get his degree. Little Brother Ryan couldn't ask for a better mentor, and his family was so excited to meet David they all came to the introduction. Great start to what should be a stellar match.

Little Brother Daveion has been with us for 3 years now. (His was the first match I made!) He had a wonderful experience in his first match, which was School-based, and is now ready to step up to Community-based. Big Brother Ryan had his own 2-year school-based match [in Missouri], and was looking to become more involved in his second match. Two great guys, a great match, great things on the horizon.

Our final new match of June 2016 is another special one: Little Sister Catlyn and Big Sister Lori have both been matched through this office before, and they are perfect for each other. Both are super friendly, active, outdoorsy, and both have a wonderful attitude about everything. We seem to say it with every match, but the future is really bright for these two magnificent young ladies.

Many hearty CONGRATULATIONS to all of our new matches!

Summer Weekend Lunches In 2015 we coordinated a summer weekend sack lunch program and it was a great success. We helped get nutritious lunches to a good number of local kids through multiple partnerships and many very generous sponsors and volunteers. This year we are reaching twice as many! Again, so many wonderful people have stepped up to join our team.

Become a “Big,” and put a smile on a “Little’s” face!

The first week we had the Macomb Morning Rotary, second was WIU Financial Aid, third was WIU Sodexo, and the fourth was Calvary Baptist. That was just June! There are still eight more weeks of summer and eight more lunch-makers. And we need to say a very special thank-you! to WIU Sodexo for donating about 250 turkey subs and about 250 Lunchables to our summer weekend lunches effort; a huge donation for our cause! Updates coming in the July and August newsletters

YMCA Summer Day Camp We have some great news to share! Four great friends of our program have stepped up to support our kids. For the second year YMCA of McDonough County has funded 10 BBBS kids going to their summer camp, Edward Jones Financial Advisor Cory J Clem and Edward Jones Financial Advisor: Patrick Kolata established an annual scholarship to send one more BBBS kid to the YMCA summer camp, and First State Bank of Illinois donated the funds to send all of our BBBS kids at the YMCA summer camp on the weekly Friday field trips. Cory, Pat, First State Bank, and the YMCA are important members of the BBBS team and we are very grateful for their significant contributions. 11 kids are going to have a spectacular summer, and it's all thanks to our generous supporters!

Macomb Heritage Days We walked in the Macomb Heritage Days parade on 25 June 2016. An incredible number of Bigs, Littles, and parents came out to show their support for our program and the great work we do. Makes us very proud to be part of this BBBS team! Upcoming Events On Sunday 17 July, we will make our third annual visit to the Burlington Bees. The Bees have always been very generous to us, allowing us to be on the field and meet players, and Jimmy Johns provides free dinner to everyone in our group. Everyone in BBBS and family members are welcome. Please call the office to reserve your spot ASAP. Change A Child’s Life for the Better, Forever.

Many young people, especially those who are facing adversity, have no idea what they want to be, or if post High School education is even an option for them. 57% of children enrolled in the BBBS program say they feel a greater sense of their future because of their connection to a Big Brother or Big Sister.

It only takes 2-3 visits a month to change a child’s life.
