They went out every day to participate in different activities. On Monday they went to the Fremantle Maritime Museum and Cicerello’s for some of Fremantle’s famous fish and chips. A trip overseas to Rottnest Island was on the agenda on Tuesday. Some were looking a little ‘off colour’ after a bit of a rough trip home. Sustainability – Be Kind To The Environment

Every Thursday is ‘Trash Free Thursday’ at Beckenham Primary School. The students are encouraged to bring a waste free lunch each Thursday. Every term, we determine the class that has brought the most waste free lunches for the term.

Room 4

You brought the most waste free lunches for term 3. We hope you enjoyed your prize of a pack of metal reusable straws.

National Recycling Week National Recycling Week runs from 12th November – 18th November 2018. This year, Beckenham Primary School will be encouraging all students to participate in a waste free week. Waste free week will be held next week (week 6). In order to be eligible to win a prize at the end of our waste free week, students simply come to school each day during week 6 with a completely waste free lunchbox. All students will receive a Bestie for each day they have a waste free lunch. All students who have brought a waste free lunch for the 5 days during week 6 will go in the draw to win a prize. We can’t wait to see a variety of waste free lunches. Good luck!

City Of Gosnells Bike Identification Operation

On Tuesday 20th November at 8.00am the Gosnells District Neighbourhood Watch team will be joining us once again to assist with property marking of high target items such as bikes, scooters and skateboards. Engraving these items ensures that if recovered by police, they can be returned to their rightful owners. Property marking also makes the items harder to dispose of and therefore is a deterrent to thieves.

This is a free service. It takes a few minutes to engrave each child’s bike. They use an industrial engraver to mark the underside of the bikes with a family members drivers licence number. Parents, teachers and friends are also encouraged to bring their bikes for marking. A note provided by Neighbourhood Watch will go home in advance requesting parental/carer permission and supply of the drivers licence number. Each participant will receive a bike information pack with cycling and safety information included.

KINGS PARK EXCURSION

Did you know there is a fire at Kings Park that never goes out? This is just one of the interesting facts we learnt on our excursion!

On Friday 26th October, Room 3, 5 and 6 travelled to Kings Park to learn more about important landmarks and places of historical significance.

We saw the State War Memorial, John Forrest statue, the Giant Boab and the Pioneer Women’s Memorial. We also climbed the DNA Tower and enjoyed the magnificent view. We ended the day playing in the Rio Tinto Naturescape.

Thank you to Mrs Saxena for organising such a fun day and thank you to the parents who volunteered their time to help supervise the excursion.

NEWS FROM THE ART ROOM Congratulations to these students who won prizes at the Canning Show. I chose the outstanding artwork from each class and entered it in the Youth Awards section of the show and was very proud to see how many place winners we had! These students will be presented with their prize money at the next formal assembly on Friday 16th November.

Ethan Ashwell from Room 4 was also awarded a Champion of the Show award and has been invited to a special awards ceremony this Saturday night.

Bullying

In the last newsletter I outlined the school’s shared definition of bullying and how we respond to incidents when they are reported. What is not bullying? While conflict or mean and hurtful behaviour may upset a child tremendously, by labelling the mean behaviour ‘bullying’ we may be disempowering children. It is important that children understand the difference between someone being insensitive or mean and what constitutes bullying behaviour because being able to successfully resolve and navigate these situations is a huge step in their emotional growth and maturity. If the situation is deemed to be simply ‘mean’ or ‘hurtful’ behaviour it is important not to over-play this through misleading terminology and offer ways for the child to address and resolve the situation themselves. One off incidents should not be referred to as ‘bullying.’ Parents who react too defensively for their child at every negative encounter with their child’s peers many be doing more harm than good. In later years the child may not have the necessary tools to independently

handle conflict and may feel ‘victimised’ in situations that don’t go their way. This may potentially cause social engagement and relationship difficulties in later life.

Knowing how to deal with bullying and difficult people at school, at work and throughout life in social situations is an essential life skill. Discuss strategies with your child and set a short period of time to see if they can resolve the situation. Many students want to try to deal with the bullying themselves if they get useful tips about what to do. If the bullying continues or increases, contact the school.

The strategies below are useful for some types of bullying. Use your judgement about their suitability for your child's situation.

For younger children, encourage them to try these strategies (if they feel safe to do so):

ignoring the person doing the bullying

telling them to stop, and then walking away

pretending you don't care; act unimpressed or not bothered

go somewhere safe

distracting the other person or calming the situation (e.g. agreeing in an offhand way with the bullying when they say offensive or negative things—known as 'fogging').

If you believe there are bullying issues that are not being addressed please contact the office and make an appointment to speak with either myself or Raelene Hogg.

HELPING HANDS BECKENHAM Dear Parents and Guardians,

News Update: Halloween Celebration: Last week we all celebrated Halloween at our service. The menu and

weekly program were completely dominated by the Halloween theme. The children, parents and educators

enjoyed having some scary afternoon tea items such as apple teeth, one-eye monsters, banana pop ghosts,

smash jelly and cookie spiders. The art and craft activities included skeleton making, pumpkins, trick nor

treat lolly bags, Halloween colouring in competition and many more. Some of the parents also joined in when

they came for collection.

Safety Drill: the fire and lockdown drills were also performed to teach children some safety measures and

held discussion sessions so that all children understand the reasons of practicing these drills.

New Addition in HHN Family: recently we have been joined by some new families and some children began

to come to us to have fun with Helping Hands’ Fun team of children and educators. The new members are

Saathvik, Bella, Ava and Elijah.

Coming Up Next: Getting ready for Christmas: Next week we will be focusing on our End of the Year

event relating to Christmas. Yay! Christmas is almost here!!! The children and staff will be preparing the

props for the performance and collecting the resources we may need.

For booking details please contact the coordinator Pooja Saggar on 0478 398 270 or email
