New laws affecting our profession are introduced all the time in thestate legislature. Only a united front by those of us who actually workin engineering can help educate legislators. That’s why our OhioEngineers Public Policy Leadership Forum brings our members together to learn about state level issues facing us today and to mobilize our efforts.

There are many unique issues that make the 124th Ohio GeneralAssembly much different than perhaps any other legislature withwhich we will work. Term limits are playing a large role in how werelate to our legislators. The Ohio Supreme Court’s DeRolph ruling hastriggered a struggle to find aschool funding solution. And withan economic slowdown, only ourvigilant efforts will prevent theexpansion of sales taxes to professional engineering servicesto help pay for DeRolph.

OSPE IS ON THE FIRING LINE OF THE PROFESSION

Senate Bill 156 Through OSPE’s grassroots activism, bills giving non-engineers authority to design manycivil engineering projects have not passed. OSPE continues to negotiate the latest bill, House Bill 214.

Allen County Storm Water ProposalRecognizing the dangers of Senate Bill 156,OSPE successfully lobbied the Allen CountyCommissioners to drop their plan to allownon-engineers to design storm water systems.

House Bill 345 House Bill 345 would have licensed “home inspectors”had OSPE allowed the bill to survive the 123rd OhioGeneral Assembly. It’s back this year as House Bill 29.

Senate Bill 138Senate Bill 138 would have licensed “interior designers,”giving them authority in design projects over professional engineers.

House Bill 560 OSPE is supporting the billthat will update and reviseOhio’s EngineeringPractice Act.
