How long have you been an estateagent?Eight years.

Can you remember the first houseyou sold? Where was it and howmuch for?The first house I sold was in Liverpool14. It was a semi-detached and it soldfor £85,000.

What is the most expensive houseyou have helped to sell? That was a property in Sandfield Park,Alder Road, Liverpool and it sold for£250,000.

Have you ever sold a house for orto a celebrity?No, I haven’t.

Where in the world would yourdream house be and what would itlook like?Well, the location would be Patterdalein the South Lakes. It would have to bea lovely cottages, set in one acre ofland. I would love to live the good lifeand have peace and quiet.

What is the most importantthing someone selling a house

should remember?Well, of course, you should always usea good agent with good localknowledge.

You should de-clutter prior to thehouse going on the market andremember, kerb appeal is veryimportant. You should also be flexibleon price

What is the most important thingsomeone buying a house shouldremember?Location and good sound mortgageadvice.

Concentrate on your need, not whatyou would like – buyers often mixthese two up. But the biggest reward indoing this job is seeing the face on afirst time buyer as you pass their keysover to their new home.

Buyers seek out bargains inGreeceIN THE wake of theeurozone crisis, andAmerican debt fears, currency values areswinging wildly andpotential buyers ofholiday homes abroad arekeen to cash in if possible.

The latest analysis fromRightmove andMoneycorp reveals asharp increase in Greekproperty searches, asBritons seek out potentialbargains in light of theongoing debt crisis in thecountry.

Cape Verde providedthe most significantchange, surging 33 placesto enter the top 10trending table at number3. Olann Kerrison,Moneycorp seniorcurrency analyst, says:“The pound reached a

two-month peak againstthe euro at close to 1.16euro at the end of May.

“This briefstrengthening of thepound, combined with theGreek debt crisis, alertedsavvy Britons onRightmove Overseas tothe potential that theGreek housing marketmight hold, once theeconomy is healthier andstability is regained.

“It is also interesting tonote falling interest inNew Zealand – possiblybecause of thestrengthening of the NZdollar against the pound, which increases propertyprices for Britons.”

Shameem Golamy,Rightmove’s head ofoverseas, says: “In June,we saw searches increase

for idyllic island locationsas people look to escapetraditional UK summerdownpours. Greek islands, most notably theDodecanese groupincluding Rhodes andSamos – attracted morethan 50% more searchesmonth on month.

“With Crete alsoincreasing in searches bymore than 20%, it’s clearthat problems in theGreek economy arefocussing attention oninvestmentopportunities.”

Other island locationsin demand include theBalearic Islands, withboth Ibiza and Minorcarising in popularity, alongwith Italian Sardinia.

The Cape Verdearchipelago in the

mid-Atlantic saw a 46%jump in searches, partlybecause of the availabilityof direct flightsex-Manchester to BoaVista from £246.

A second analysis, fromcurrency brokerCurrencies.co.uk, revealsthat up to four out of fivesecond home owners arehappy with returns theyearn from them.

Its study found that theaverage annual rentalincome on second homesabroad is £9,500; one in sixowners receives morethan £15,000 a year, whilemaintenance coststypically stand at £2,200per year. The studyestimates that around 54%of 400,000 UK homeownersabroad rent them out forpart of the year.

Study uponCOLLEGE rooms can be

a mixed bag. At bestthey’re functional, atworst cramped, andthey’re normally pretty

short on style. So a parent’s help is essential

to enable fledgling students to flythe nest successfully.

That doesn’t simply involveparcelling up their collection ofrandom coffee mugs and clothes(washed or otherwise!) andmountains of CDs and DVDs,tempting though that may be.Instead, it means sending themoff with those vital ingredients toinstantly transform their space.

Think brightly-colouredbedding, practical essentials andbeyond. And if you want anA-star, spoil them by splurgingon imaginative, funkyaccessories.

Consider this outlay aninvestment, as such comforts willward off early pangs ofhomesickness and create a roomthat’s a magnet for fellowstudents looking for new friends.

MyFirstHOME

PeterGoodbody,Lawyer andFabCollectivePhotographerWhere was the family home you grew upin and what was it like?Childwall – three-bedroom semi-detached.Probably built between the wars, as so manywere in south Liverpool. Typically suburban witha front and back garden. I remember a large coalbunker in the back and the dining table wasnearly always piled high with my dad’s work, sowe could hardly ever eat in there. We had aclimbing frame in the back garden, which seemedto be a draw for other kids in the road.

What is your clearest memory of thehouse?Candles for the power cuts during the miner’sstrike; my younger brother tripping on thefootwell by the back door and falling through theopen door into the downstairs loo – he smashedthe loo with his head and still has the scar on hisforehead; getting a black and white TV when Iwas about seven or eight.

Where was the first house you boughtyourself and what did it cost?It was a one bedroomed basement flat inBirkenhead in about 1988/9 for £15,000.

What made you want to buy it?I’d previously been living in a rented flat havingjust started work in Liverpool after being atuniversity. I was lucky because I’d inherited a bitof money, so I could afford a deposit. Buyingproperty wasn’t a problem – mortgages wereeasy to come by so it was an easy decision.

What are the most important featuresyou look for when buying a house? The last two houses I’ve lived in have both beenterraced houses in South Liverpool. They wereboth built around 1910 and they’re solid; theyseem to have a character and a soul about them.I like to wonder what the walls saw and heardbefore we got there.

Are you a DIY trier or do you leave it tothe experts?I can hang wallpaper, wire a plug and put up ashelf so that it doesn’t fall down. But it’s betterto get someone else to do it from a time pointof view. We “inherited” a decorator from myaunt and uncle – he used to do lots of work forthem and now he does the same for us.

What's the one thing you love most aboutyour current house? It’s got lots of space; we have room for a diningtable that comfortably seats 12 people around itso we can have friends and family without havingan issue about squeezing anyone in. And theneighbours are cool too.

SKILLS FOR LIFE: Bosch Power Tools is launching a ‘build and bond’ campaign to helpparents pass on practical skills to children

QWe’ve recently takenout theboiler fromabovethekitchenworktopandput anewone in theairingcupboard, but thepipeworkhas left ahole inthecornerof theworktop. What can I doabout it,apart fromreplacing theworktop?A Why not build aplatform over the holeusing offcuts of wood? Usebattens for around thesides and a plank over thetop. Once painted orstained, it can be used toput your kettle, toaster orstorage jars on. Try yourlocal wood yard or DIYstore if you don’t have anysuitable wood.

Howto...GGeettaa ccoouurrttyyaarrddggaarrddeenn iinn sshhaappeeMAKE a bare courtyardinto something special withthese top tips.

Measure your courtyardwall for the trellis and buyit in standard lengths fromyour local garden centre orDIY store. Look for archeddesigns because they’llcreate a more interestingfeature. Alternatively, createan arch yourself by cuttingthe trellis to staggeredlengths and adding a curvedend piece of wood.

If you’re making yourown arch, or the standardlength of trellis doesn’t fityour wall, cut it to size witha hand or electric saw, oruse a Dremel 8200 multitool,SpeedClic Mandrel SC402and Wood Cutting WheelSC544.

Sand the cut ends to get asmooth finish. Usesandpaper, an electricsander, or the multitool, plus a sanding mandrel and60-grit 13mm sanding band.Stain any cut ends to matchthe rest of the trellis.

Fix battens of wood toyour courtyard wall (for thetrellis) using a drill-driver.Then use it, or the multitool

and drill bit 150 3.2mm(from the Dremel PrecisionDrill Bit Set 628), to drillthrough the trellis and intothe battens. This will givethe plants room to climbbehind and around thetrellis.

Finish off your courtyardtransformation with plantsin troughs (make smartones out of decking boards),pots and raised flowerbeds.Train some climbers upyour trellis, then relax witha glass of plonk and enjoywhat you’ve created.

● RESEARCH by Bosch PowerTools reveals that the majority

of parents aren’t passing on theirpractical skills to their children.

Only 31% of parents doeducational play and life skilldevelopment, such as DIYing, cooking and sewing, with their kids. This is despite almost 90% beingconcerned that their children’s lackof practical skills will cause themproblems later in life.

As 93% of parents think it’simportant to pass life skills on to thenext generation, Bosch Power Tools islaunching a campaign to encourage

families to ‘build and bond’ by buildinga tree house in their back garden, orjust drawing a tree-house design.

The researchers also questionedchildren aged between seven and 16,many of whom were keen to learnnew skills. A total of 52% said theywould like their parents to teach themhow to ‘do it themselves’, so they canfix things without calling in a builderwhen they have their own home.

It’s time tomove it or lose itEASY DOES IT: Packing properly saves hours when it comes to unpacking

IF you’re planning to move house, thenyou probably feel like you’ve got amillion-and-one things to do – not least, working out how many moving boxesand other packaging materials you’ll

need for packing up your belongings! But with a few helpful tips, you’ll soon be

able to order your packaging with confidence, leaving you free to get on with the rest of yourmoving house to-do list.

According to Box Express, the reason thatmany people find it difficult to work out thenumber of moving boxes and other packagingmaterials they need is that each house isdifferent and it depends on many factors, such as:● Whether you have ‘extra’ rooms in yourhouse, e.g. a playroom, study/ home office, gym, library or games room.● Whether you are quite minimalist orwhether you tend to hoard your belongings.● Iif you have a particularly large volume ofbooks, media, toys, clothes or paperwork.● The size of the boxes that you order!

But don’t throw your hands up in horror. The company says you have two options

when buying moving boxes and packagingmaterials for your house move.

You can either buy the items separately orbuy a moving house pack to suit the size ofyour house. A good packaging supplier will beable to provide you with a wide variety ofindividual moving boxes and a choice ofmoving packs, and there are advantages toboth options.

Buying your moving boxes and otherpackaging materials separately:

The main advantage of buying yourpackaging items separately is that you canorder exactly the amount you want of eachtype and size of box.

The advice that follows is based on theassumption that you have one kitchen, onebathroom, one living room and one diningroom (i.e. four ‘other rooms’ in addition toyour bedrooms). If you have any extra roomsin your house, you will need to increase thenumber of moving boxes and packagingmaterials that you order.

As a very general guide, you can allowbetween four-to-seven boxes of different sizesper room in your house. You should choose aselection of moving boxes; usually smallboxes are good for books and ornaments, medium packing boxes for general householditems and tea chest boxes for larger butlighter items.

You can turn this into a calculation asfollows: number of bedrooms plus four ‘otherrooms’ = total number of rooms, thenmultiply by 4 to 7 boxes per room.

For example, If you live in a three-bedroomterraced house, with one kitchen, bathroom, living room and dining room, your

calculation would be:(3 bedrooms plus 4 ‘other rooms’ = 7 rooms)

multiply by 4 to 7 boxes per room = between28 and 49 boxes for your whole house.

Where you pick in the range should bebased on whether you think you have a lot ofbelongings or not. If you have a lot ofcupboards and drawers full of stuff, then gofor seven boxes per room and round up ordown depending on the pack sizes available.

Other general packaging materials you willneed include bubble wrap, acid-free tissuepaper, packing tapes and marker pens.

Box Express’s recommendation would bethat you allow: approx. five metres of bubblewrap per room you have; approx. 30-50 sheets

of acid-free tissue paper per room as well andapprox. one roll of packing tape per 20medium-sized moving boxes.

● If you would rather save a little time andlet someone else do the sums, moving housepacks can be a great choice!

Many packaging suppliers now offermoving house packs of different sizes that aredesigned to provide the basic boxes andpackaging materials you will need to suit thesize of your house. They often work outcheaper than buying all of your itemsseparately and it can take the weight off yourmind, knowing you’ll get a good selection ofmoving boxes and other packaging materials.

The moving house packs will usually beavailable to order based on either the type ofhouse you live in or the number of bedroomsyou have. You might want to start off with abasic moving pack and see how you get on;you can then simply ‘top up’ later on with anyextra moving boxes of a particular size thatyou need.

Most people don’t realise how manybelongings they really have until they startpacking; if this is you, don’t panic! You’ll findthat some companies offer next-day delivery –a lifesaver if you’re running out of time.

Because, whatever you decide, just makesure you don’t leave your packing until thelast day.

BestOfTheBunchCosmosTHESE elegant annuals withfeathery leaves and daisy-likeblooms in shades of red, pink andwhite often flower longer andlater than other bedding plants,so may still be flowering longafter gardeners have emptied therest of their summer pots tomake way for autumn plantings.

They are often mistaken forsingle dahlias, but goodvarieties include C. ’Sensation’,which grows to 3ft (90cm) andvaries from bright pink towhite, while C. sulphureushasproduces slightly smallerorange to yellow flowers.

Most garden cosmos arevarieties of C. bipinnaus andthe more interesting kindsinclude the red and whitepatterned ’Candy Stripe’. Theyshould be grown in well-drainedfertile soil in full sun and, ifdeadheaded regularly, can lastuntil October.

Thingstodothisweek● Continue to feed greenhousecrops, keeping them well ventilated.● Take late cuttings of pelargoniumsand fuchsias.● Harvest nectarines, apricots andpeaches.● Sow crops of lettuce, spinach andspring cabbage where gaps appear inthe vegetable patch.● Give conifer hedges their annualtrim and reduce growth on newspring-planted conifers to make athicker hedge.● Check for reversion onvariegated shrubs and trees andremove all-green shoots.● Plant dwarf bulbous irises forwinter colour.● Deadhead marginal aquatic plantsand remove excess growth fromsubmerged oxygenating plants.● Take cuttings from theunflowered shoots of penstemonsand insert them in a frame of sandysoil.● Re-start rested corms ofCyclamen persicum, after repotting.● Pot up self-sown seedlings bydigging them up and potting them up,placing them in a shady cold frame oron a cool, shady windowsill.● Trim pyracantha, if you haven’tdone so earlier in the month.

Time to thinkabout

THE heat of summer may befading, but if you want yourborders and pots to sizzle inspring, you’ll need to startplanting bulbs from now

through to autumn.Whether you prefer drifts of

snowdrops, daffodils, crocuses orbluebells, ‘lasagne’ plantings oflayers of bulbs in containers to giveyou colour through spring or just afew simple species of tulips ormuscari in your rockery, there’sroom for bulbs in every garden, nomatter what the setting.

Visit your local garden centre inlate summer and autumn to get thebest selection of blooms or ordersome bulb catalogues to plan yourcolour scheme.

Be adventurous in your choice, asthere’s so much more on offer thanjust the standard narcissi, tulipsand snowdrops.

Chris Ireland-Jones, owner ofspecialist Avon Bulbs(www.avonbulbs.co.uk, tel 01460 242177), says that if he could only plantone bulb type this autumn it wouldbe the Camassia ‘Electra’, with itshuge lilac blue flowers blooming inlate April.

Growing to 1m (3ft), it will sithappily in a border in sun or shadeand, unlike many other bulbs, itlikes heavy soil.

Bulbs should be planted 5in(12cm) deep, 6-12in (15-30cm) apartin humus-rich, moisture-retentivesoil, in a spot which won’t dry outuntil mid-summer.

“It flowers for a lot longer thanother camassias, likes heavy soiland virtually nothing kills it,” heenthuses.

“Camassias are underrated bulbs.Planted among other herbaceousperennials which flower later, theyprovide a lift in the season and canalso be used as meadow plants inopen conditions like grass.”

Fans of wood anemones shouldcheck out A. nemorosa ’BlueCentred Double’ and others in anew, wider range from BroadleighBulbs (www.broadleighbulbs.co.uk,tel 01823 286 231). It’s alarge-flowered double woodanemone with delicate blue backsand a tiny blue centre and requirespartial shade.

Grape hyacinths (muscari) havehistorically had a bad press becausethey are invasive, popping up allover the place, but the ‘Magic’group including ‘White Magic’ arefantastic for growing in pots, as isM. ‘Mount Hood’, with its dark blueflowers and white top. It’s alsosuited to a rock garden or sunnybank, flowering in April, and looksgreat partnered with small speciestulips and aubrieta.

This year’s Spring FloweringBulb of the Year is the bold andstriking Narcissus ‘Thalia’,following much debate at theannual election hosted by TheInternational Flower Bulb Centre.

It was voted for its ability to

thrive in light and in shade and forits multiple sweetly scented flowerswhich bloom in May.

Growing to 1ft (30cm) in height,it’s ideal for planting in borders orcontainers, as well as around treesand under shrubs. Plant it inwell-drained soil, roughly threetimes the bulb’s height deep, between September and the end ofNovember and ideally in a sunny oronly partially shady spot.

It’s a myth that you can’t planttulips with daffodils. However, theyshould never be placed together in avase because when you cut daffodilsthey release a slimy substancecontaining bacteria which willaffect tulips, reducing their stayingpower as a cut flower.

A number of new multi-floweringtulips, including ‘Aquila’ and‘Cartouche’, which produce at least

four full-size flowers per stem, havejust been introduced by specialistbulb suppliers, P. de Jager & Sons(www.dejager.co.uk, or tel 01622 840229 for a free catalogue)

Spring bulbs must be planted inthe autumn because they require asustained dormant period of coldtemperatures to stimulate rootdevelopment. They generally likelight, well-drained soil and if you’reputting them in containers, placecrocks in the pot and mix yourcompost with a handful of sand orgrit before planting.

Narcissi are best planted inSeptember, while tulips should beplanted in late October and November.

If you are planting your bulbs incontainers, never allow the pot torest on the ground or the water willseep in from below and soak them, making them rot. They shouldalways be placed on a free-drainingstand or on pot feet and if you wanta fuller display, pack them in tightly.Water them and place the potoutdoors.

You can put the pots in asheltered spot near to the house so

SPECIALIST: Multi Flower Tulipa 'Cartouche' produce at least four full-size flowers per stem

THYME is one of those herbsthat is enjoyed as much for itsornamental value as it is for itsintense flavour – but there are alot of different varieties, some ofwhich aren’t for eating, so makesure you choose the right typefor you.

Thyme likes dry, poor,well-drained soil and lots of sun.If you have heavy soil you’ll haveto add a good amount of grit tohave success.

Plant in late spring or earlysummer, after the last frosts havepassed as it needs time to settlein before enduring its first winteroutside.

Upright varieties should bespaced around 9in (23cm) apart, while spreading types need to be12in (30cm) apart. They needwatering in dry spells while theyare becoming established butafter that no watering isnecessary.

The best known type isThymus vulgaris, garden thyme, which produces deepmauve-pink flowers in June andJuly. Lemon thyme (Thymus xcitriodorus) is good for pots, while T. x citriodorus ’BertramAnderson’, a spreading variety, has gold-variegated leaves andmauve-pink flowers and can beused as both an ornamental andedible plant. Young shoots canbe cut off from the tip of thestems for cooking.

TASTY: There are all sorts of varieties ofthyme, some which are not for eating sochoosing the right kind is important

that they don’t become completelywaterlogged over the winter, although tulips need to havemoisture throughout the coolermonths or they’ll end up short andstumpy.

For an eye-catching display ofcolour on the patio or by a wall, gofor single colours of the sameflower, but if you want to be a bitmore adventurous you can go for, say, a sizzling display of red andyellow tulips, pansies andwallflowers, planted in stages fromlate summer to mid-spring.

The best bulbs for growing inpots are the ones which arenaturally more compact, such ashyacinths, dwarf narcissi andTulipa fosteriana.

Large-flowered daffodils andtulips tend to look a bit top heavy inpots and are prone to being knockedover by strong winds.

If you have large containers andwant a succession of blooms, go forthe ‘lasagne’ layered scheme, planting the larger bulbs such astulips and narcissi lower down anddwarf bulbs such as crocuses anddwarf irises near the top.

Once your bulbs are over, keepfeeding them after the flowers dieand then you can plant them out inthe garden where they shouldflower the following year, providedyou plant them deeply enough.

EYE-CATCHING: Go for single colours of the sameflower on a patio like this multi flower Tulipa 'Aquila’
