Quarter 1 Issues
Housekeeping
Quarter 2 has now begun.
• The end of the semester is a permanent grade for graduation.
• Only Exam 3 can be redone.
Submit Exam #1.

Chpt 9 Introduction
Cellular Respiration &
Fermentation
Essential Question:
How do organisms obtain energy?
Chpt 9 Introduction
Section 9.1 (Cellular Respiration an Overview)
• Why do most organisms undergo the process of cellular
respiration?
Section 9.2 (The Process of Cellular Respiration)
• How do cells release energy from food in the presence of
oxygen?
Section 7.3 (Fermentation)
• How do cells release energy from food without oxygen?
Chpt 9 Learning Objectives
I will be able to…
• Describe how the process of cellular respiration or
fermentation breaks bonds of food molecules and uses the
energy to carry out cellular processes.
• Identify the reactants and products of cellular respiration.
• Describe how fermentation serves the purpose of breaking
down food molecules in the absence of oxygen.
Chpt 9 Vocabulary
Complete the vocabulary foldable within your notebook.
• Definitions should be written behind each word tab.
• Chpt 9 vocabulary foldable can be located @

Cellular Respiration
Section 9.1 Assessment Questions.
• Questions located on pg. 253 of your biology textbook.
• Complete questions 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 3a, & 3b.
• Section 9.1 question worksheet can be located @

What relationship does cellular respiration have with
photosynthesis?
• The reactants of photosynthesis are the products of cellular
respiration & the products of photosynthesis are the reactants
of cellular respiration

Marshmallow Demonstration
Marshmallow Demonstration (Your group).
1. You will measure the mass of your stand & 1 large
marshmallow to the nearest 0.1 g. Record in your notebook.
2. You will then light the marshmallow with a match & allow it to
burn completely out.
3. Once again measure the mass of the stand & marshmallow
to the nearest 0.1 g. Record in your notebook.
• What happened to the weight of the marshmallow when you
burned it?
Marshmallow Demonstration
Marshmallow Demonstration (Teacher).
Covering the burning marshmallow.
• What happened to the burning marshmallow?
• What does the marshmallow need to burn?
Marshmallow Demonstration
Marshmallow Demonstration (Teacher).
Oxygen probe.
• What do you think happened to the oxygen?
• What is produced during the burning of the marshmallow?
• What do you think the smoke is composed of?
Marshmallow Demonstration
Marshmallow Demonstration (Teacher).
Cobalt chloride paper.
• What color did the paper turn in the tap water?
• What color did the paper turn in the collection bottle?
• What does this tell us about the liquid that cover the inside of
the container?
Marshmallow Demonstration
Marshmallow Demonstration (Teacher).
Carbon dioxide probe.
• What happened to the CO2 concentration surrounding the
marshmallow as it burned?
Marshmallow Demonstration
What does this all tell us about cellular respiration?

The Effects of Exercise on Cellular Respiration
• Follow the procedures.
• Think Safety:
- DO NOT inhale the BTB
- When exhaling into the straw you MUST wear goggles.
• Remember: slow steady breath into the straw.
