Tue 29 & Wed 30 Apr, 7.30pmGuilherme Botelho’s Sideways Rain is a metaphor for the primal energy running through all living things. Performed by 14 dancers, they walk, run, fall, rise, stop and then start again, depicting the evolution of man and the human urge to constantly change and move forwards.

Set to a chillingly hypnotic score by Mexican artist Murcof, Sideways Rain is a powerfully visual examination of human nature by Swiss company Alias.

Fri 2 & Sat 3 May, 7.30pm“Crystal Pite stands between abstract choreography and story-telling, and she moves very effortlessly between the two... And that’s incredibly rare in choreography, to make abstract tableaux sing with meaning.” Luke Jennings, The Observer

“...she’s a great mover of people, and makes interesting movement that you like to watch. At the same time she does try to deal with the real world and has some concrete narrative elements in her work. And it’s the mix of the two that I find very interesting.” Alistair Spalding, Sadler’s Wells

SHAUN WILLIAMSON (Eastenders & Extras)

EMMA BARTON(Eastenders)

Mon 26 - Sat 31 May

Now seen by over 1 million people worldwide, The National Theatre’s award-winning comedy directed by Nicholas Hytner, One Man, Two Guvnors, comes to Birmingham Hippodrome for one week only.

Fired from his skiffle band, Francis Henshall becomes minder to Roscoe Crabbe. But Roscoe is really Rachel, posing as her own dead brother – who’s been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers. Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a job with one Stanley Stubbers – but to prevent discovery, he must keep his two guvnors apart. Simple.

This glorious celebration of British comedy – a unique, laugh-out-loud mix of satire, songs, slapstick and glittering one-liners, will star Gavin Spokes in the central role of Francis Henshall alongside Shaun Williamson (Eastenders and Extras) as Charlie Clench and Emma Barton (Eastenders) in the role of Dolly.

Three early works from the founder choreographer of the Royal Ballet Companies, Frederick Ashton.

Dante Sonata is a simple and poignant piece, created at the height of World War II but which still resonates today. The elegant Children of Light battle the serpentine Children of Darkness to a virtuoso score by Franz Liszt.

Created in 1933, Les Rendezvous is a gentle piece in which friends and acquaintances dance together in a park, showcasing each dancer’s skills in a series of solos, pas de deux and ensemble dances.

Based on Edith Sitwell’s deliciously nonsensical poetry, Façade embraces the fun of it all with whole-hearted abandon. Enjoy a break from the sanity of everyday life with this series of delightful characters.

Funny, tender and true, this lovely ballet of rural bliss will put a spectacular spring in your step.

When country beauty Lise falls in love with farm lad Colas, she’s about to upset the apple cart. Her mother, Widow Simone, would much rather she marry Alain, the son of a pompous and wealthy vineyard owner, even though he is somewhat dim-witted and the proud possessor of two left feet. Enjoy watching this merry crew try to meet their heart’s desires with predictably hilarious results.

Ever popular because of its wit, passion and simple, engaging story, La Fille mal gardée remains a favourite for all the family. Originally created by Frederick Ashton in 1960, this charming ballet was an instant hit.

Is Nabucco, King of Babylon, a god or a madman? Verdi’s Nabucco, best known for the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves, is the operatic equivalent of a 1950s biblical Hollywood epic with its soaring, rousing score. This new production set right now has the WNO Chorus at its heart.

When you listen to Moses und Aron, you will hear a soundworld so unique, so urgent that you might be forgiven for thinking it has come down from heaven itself. Seize this rare opportunity to experience Schoenberg’s extraordinary re-telling of the story of Moses and the ten commandments.

Dare you enter the House of Usher? Opera can be as scary as the best horror cinema as this double bill of operas inspired by Poe’s classic tale proves. Step into the House of Usher but look out behind you.

A towering gothic fairytale from the creator of Birmingham Royal Ballet’s smash-hit Cinderella.

A cruel Prince, cursed to spend his life living in a fantastical castle with the animals he callously hunted, finds salvation in the heart of a beautiful girl. Caught stealing a single rose, Belle’s desperate father exchanges his life for his youngest daughter’s freedom. In his distant castle the Beast, stripped of his handsome features and his very humanity, must win her heart, or spend the rest of his life in bitter solitude.

A beautiful girl, a hideous beast, a golden ballroom full of animals, two haughty sisters and a grumpy grandmother, dance through the unfolding pages of Philip Prowse’s stunning storybook set, whilst David Bintley’s rich choreography brings to life magical transformations, wild waltzes, and a relationship between Belle and the Beast that is at first terrifying, but ultimately beautiful.

Birmingham Royal Ballet presents three one-act ballets, each touched in their own way by the shadow of war.

The triple bill opens with Kenneth MacMillan’s La Fin du Jour, capturing the glamorous lifestyle of the 1930s wealthy, using Maurice Ravel’s score to create an elegy to a lifestyle lost to World War II.

Miracle in the Gorbals has been specially re-created for the Company by Dame Gillian Lynne, from Robert Helpmann’s original work set in 1940s Glasgow and danced to music by Sir Arthur Bliss.

The programme closes with David Bintley’s Flowers of the Forest; with music by Malcolm Arnold and Benjamin Britten, it contrasts picture-postcard Scotland with its own bloody history.

BILL KENWRIGHT PRESENTS

THE MUSICAL FOR ALL TIME

Page 23: Birmingham Hippodrome Brochure Spring/Summer 2014

Mon 13 - Sat 25 Oct

Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.

Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production recently surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been christened the Standing Ovation Musical, as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” Jack Tinker, Daily Mail.

Combining the precision of classical ballet with the sensuality and passion of Latin dance rhythms, Brazilian dance Company Grupo Corpo makes a welcome return to the UK following its enormously successful tour in 2005. Grupo Corpo translates as Group Body, reflecting the movement style of the 22 dancers, who co-ordinate to fill the stage with unmatched energy and excitement.

The Company perform two pieces, choreographed by artistic director Rodrigo Pederneiras. The first of these, Parabelo, sees the dancers sweep across the stage, moving rhythmically from group to solo and back again. There are moments of utter peace and stillness and others of raucous Brazilian carnival.

Sem Mim is a darker piece which takes its inspiration from a Portuguese song cycle and focuses on a group of women who lament the departure of their lovers. The dancers move as waves; the ebb and flow of their bodies mimicking the calm and fury of the sea.

“I’m delighted to be bringing our Ring Cycle to Birmingham. In Ossetia, where I come from, our own folk tales parallel the myths that inspiredWagner. I believed that we could create a new visualapproach to The Ring that had an international resonance.” VALERY GERGIEV

Page 27: Birmingham Hippodrome Brochure Spring/Summer 2014

Wed 5 – Sun 9 Nov

Birmingham Hippodrome presents Wagner’s epic Ring Cycle conducted by Valery Gergiev with his world-famous Mariinsky Opera.

The Ring is a tale of gods and heroes, dwarves and giants – yet its characters are driven by passions that are all too human. The theft of magical gold from the depths of the River Rhine and its forging into the Ring sets in train the story of a world corrupted by greed and the lust for power that may only be redeemed, finally, by an act of selfless love.

DAS RHEINGOLD Starting in the depths of the river Rhine and finishing on the cloud-capped heights of Valhalla, fortress home of the gods, Richard Wagner’s Das Rheingold sets in motion his epic, four-opera Ring cycle - and an unparalleled musical and dramatic journey begins.

DIE WALKÜRE The world of gods, dwarves and giants gives way to a world of heroes: in the second instalment of The Ring it is human emotion that takes centre stage.

SIEGFRIED With its unbreakable sword, its dragon and its sleeping maiden surrounded by a barrier that only a fearless hero may penetrate, Siegfried has the quality of a good fairy tale, and is set to some of Wagner’s most vigorously exciting music.

GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG The Ring surges to its magnificent conclusion, in which the age of the gods comes to an end and a new world arises from the ashes of the old.

Welsh National Opera’s new season has just been announced. The autumn season ‘Liberty or Death!’ features two spectacular, dramatic operas by Rossini (a composer best known for his comedies) – William Tell and Moses in Egypt, alongside the classic, period-set production of Bizet’s Carmen. In Spring 2015, WNO’s ‘Spellbound’ season combines The Magic Flute and the dark delights of Hansel & Gretel with Chorus! a fully staged celebration of opera’s greatest moments featuring Lesley Garrett. Summer 2015’s ‘A Terrible Innocence’ includes Richard Ayres’s riotous new adaptation of Peter Pan and a major new production of Debussy’s strange and beautiful Pelléas and Mélisande.

Fri 28 Nov - Sat 13 Dec Let yourself get swept up in the excitement of Christmas with one of the most famous classical ballets of all time, Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker.

Sir Peter Wright’s unparalleled, world-famous production, complete with sets and costumes by John Macfarlane, the designer of the Company’s stunning Cinderella, performs in Birmingham this Christmas.

What more could a young girl ask for at Christmas, than for all her dreams to come true? Having crept downstairs at midnight to play with her new Nutcracker doll, Clara is swept up in a fantasy of toy soldiers, giant rats, snow fairies, magic and mystery. After saving her beloved Nutcracker from the King of the Rats, she is whisked away to an enchanted land and dances the night away in his arms, meeting a host of strange and exotic characters, before she is finally transformed into a beautiful ballerina.

Out of the ordinaryJoin us this summer for Summer in Southside and experience the very best in live theatre events - most of them free of charge.

Witness free dance, circus, theatre and music and share in the excitement (see back cover). In the Autumn, also look out for our weekend of installations, exhibitions and exciting happenings in Southside.

Creative LearningWe’re bringing creativity to schools and colleges in the work we do across the Midlands, inspiring young people through theatre in workshops and performances.

Watch out for our holiday workshops when any young person can spend an intensive week at the theatre, working towards staging a show at the end of the week.

Access for everyoneOur assisted performances for patrons who are visually or hearing impaired are part of our continued commitment to access for all.

Our first panto relaxed performance in January was a great introduction to people on the autistic spectrum or with learning disabilities – an audience of over 800 people enjoyed this special event. Next year’s relaxed performance takes place on 29 Jan 2015.

Beyond our packed main-stage programme, thousands of people enjoy the very best in free performances and access opportunities, with hundreds of workshops for schools and colleges - all delivering the best possible live theatre experience. We call it Hippodrome Plus - and everyone’s invited!

Take part and get involved...• You might be a teacher or represent a community group – if you want to pursue a project with us, please get in touch: [email protected]

Help us make a lasting difference...• If you’re a Charitable Trust like us, a business, or a private philanthropist looking to make a difference, let’s work together: [email protected]

£1 + £1 = £4.50When you book a ticket by phone, in person or online, you’ll be asked for a £2 donation towards our Hippodrome Plus programme. Let us know if this qualifies for Gift Aid and we could add 50p more. The Arts Council’s Catalyst scheme may also match your £2 donation. So your support can really add up, and all at no extra cost to you. Thank you.
