DAGHANG SALAMAT, ‘DI BA LINGAW?

It’s more fun in KBNZ! Friends, ladies and gentlemen Good evening! ‘Mas lingaw gyud sa KBNZ!’ was the slogan of the KBNZ administration for 2012-2014. And what fun we had!

Lingaw! Fun! In Lingaw Duwa. In 2013 and 2014, the Filipino Sporting Event of the Year was well-attended with ten or more tribus competing in the spirit of fun. It allowed the adults to reminisce their childhood days, while the younger ones discovered the beauty of Filipino traditional games like tubig-tubig, dakup-dakup, siatong, takyan, among others. And already some tribus are preparing for next year this early. In Family Day. At the start of 2014, families gathered in Auckland’s Winter Garden to share food, to play games, to socialize, to take pictures and selfies and to enjoy a concert. In Semana sa Pinulungang Binisaya. Balak, Mga Awit ni Max Surban, Mga Pelikulila, Hisgut-Hisgut, og ang PinakaPasundayag. It was a busy week for us in August 2013, re-discovering the rich Visayan language. During the inaugural observance in 2012, we had some of our youths singing traditional Bisaya songs and we laughed out loud with the funny Ado Flores. In Love is in the Air, we celebrated Valentine’s Day by dining, singing, and dancing, and raised funds for KBNZ. Other than fun, KBNZ was involved in the community and cultural activities, promoted the organisation and pursued membership outreach.

Community Involvement Philippine Calamities: Year in, Year out, our beloved homeland, the Philippines is devastated by natural calamities and in the past two years, the following areas suffered tremendous damage, Davao, Manila, Cebu and Tacloban. We helped each time. At their own expense, KBNZ representatives turned over the amount we raised to the beneficiaries, namely in Davao, Debbie Libre and in Cebu, Annie Loay. GigAlive-Thank You New Zealand: Typhoon Yolanda brought so much damage and suffering to people in the Visayas especially Tacloban. As many Kiwis and Filipinos did, KBNZ raised money through a concert/fashion show called GigAlive-Thank You New Zealand. OG: Open Gathering: For several years, on the Sunday prior to Christmas, KBNZ hosts OG: Open Gathering to treat new migrants to fool, songs and gifts. In 2012, we had a big turnout, and those who came had to receive two gifts instead of one, due to the generous

donations of members and their friends. Last year, we opted not to hold OG in favour of helping out the victims of Typhoon Yolanda. Beach Clean-up in Muriwai. We became eco-warriors as we helped clean up Muriwai beach. Santa Parade Henderson 2012. KBNZ members marched around Henderson with self-made lanterns and a float with a nipa hut carried the Villalonga family in Filipiniana attires.

Cultural Involvement Sinulog. Every year, KBNZ contributes to the cultural program during the Feast of the Sto Nino de Cebu in Auckland. In 2012, we had an original dance-musical that depicted the first mass in Cebu. In 2013, we did a flash mob to the tune of Bamboo Swing. In 2014, we joined in the 20th anniversary celebration by participating in the Alyx Ty-choreographed historical account that led to the adoration of the image of the Sto Nino. Cebu Pop. In 2013, KBNZ joined the Cebu Pop Music Festival by sending several entries of original compositions sang by some of our members including the popular KIS. While we may not have made it to the final 12, the songs were performed during Semana sa Pinulungang Binisaya,

Publications/Promotions Biskiw. KBNZ had an all-Bisaya e-magazine, BISKIW, that had news, feature stories, poems, jokes, etc , all meant to promote the Visayan language. NZ Herald & Suburb Publications. KBNZ was mentioned in news items in the New Zealand Herald and publications such as Western Leader, etc. in our fundraising effort for the Gayo Family, in seeking justice for Blessie Gotingco and in the preparation for LingawDuwa, the latter two having been projected in television. BAYANIZ. The Filipino e-magazine BAYANIZ has published KBNZ activities on its pages. Radio and TV. As president of KBNZ, I was interviewed by Radio NZ and Prime TV in relation to Blessie Gotingco’s death.

Grants & Donations One of the challenges during our term was obtaining grants. We only had one for Open Gathering 2013 from COGS, while other applications failed to obtain approval. Government has reduced its budget for grants to charitable institutions, while so many have to fight it out for grants from trusts and private institutions. But we still managed to survive through the help of generous donors, and from you who bring food to events such as this. The good news is that the total donation received by KBNZ in 2013 was $29,149.00 that consisted mainly of our fund drives for the Gayo Family and for the victims of Typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan. It is remarkable how generosity prevails in this country.

Membership To promote KBNZ and to update our members, we have maintained a Yahoo group and Facebook account. Not only are developments in activities promoted, photos of completed events are shared.

Membership Outreach We have held activities in different parts of Auckland to reach out to members and prospective members. One very important aspect of KBNZ’s mission is to be a big brother to members and Filipinos in Auckland. We raised money for Norman Gayo as he buried his wife in the Philippines. Our members donated to families whose members either died or undergoing difficult situations. We went out of way to support the Gotingco family in the loss of Blessie.

Leadership What is elating about this leadership role is seeing the smiling faces of those whom we serve, receiving the handshakes, a pat at the back, kind words and letters of thanks.

Thank You All the activities KBNZ pursued in 2012-2014 were focused toward making the organization relevant and meaningful to all members. These activities would have never happened if not for the support of co-officers, chairs, members, friends and believers. (I shall formally acknowledge those outstanding during the PASALAMAT ceremonies). But if you won’t mind, I’d like to end this speech in a very personal manner.

This message is to my wife, Debbie. You know, Debbie, I am the luckiest person on earth, as not only do I have the sweetest woman in my life. You are a constructive critic, you are my personal driver, you are the most efficient PA (personal assistant) one can ever have, you are even my beauty stylist – and your support and understanding in this voluntary, time-consuming, energy-demanding, nerve-cracking, emotionally-draining, and at times lonely, role as president of KBNZ, has made the two-years tenure most satisfying, most rewarding, and most meaningful. Thank you.

To one and all, Mabuhi ang KBNZ!
