The FUNFAIR team would like to thank allof you who were involved and a part ofthe 2014 amazing Funfair. We had set a personal goal of raising$10,000, a few thousand more than ourprevious year. With a terrific team, greatweather, amazing sponsors and the bestcommunity of residents anywhere, wemanaged to raise a whopping $14,300for the community! There will be a fullreport coming in the next Banar. Thankyou all so very much! ~ Mike Murphy, Chair

To provide Hamlet dog-walkers with a "stop-over" andrest site during which to gaze at the flora and fauna, a

local resident "reclaimed" a park style bench that wasdestined for the landfill. The bench was taken home, sanded, cleaned, primed, painted "hot pink" with goodquality outdoor paint and staked to the ground alongsideof one of the main NCC pathways about 500–700 yardsimmediately west of the intersection of Southpark andTauvette. Some walkers apparently appreciated the effortand left a "thank you" sign on an adjacent tree.Unfortunately, the bench lasted less than two weeks beforesomeone broke the security stakes and removed it. It isextremely unfortunate that the generosity of a neighbourtoward fellow walkers should be treated in such a way.

We urge whoever removed the bench to please return it.Those walking their dogs will be most grateful for itsreturn.

Like many of you I find that thissummer has not only been

unusually busy but has also passed fartoo quickly. It seems that the older Iget, the faster the seasons change (ormaybe it is the closer I get to the endof this term).

There has been no shortage of newsfor local residents as our City findsitself in the throes of unprecedentedgrowth and development. Our lightrail line construction project isnearing the end of its first year, ontrack and on budget. To date, overfifty per cent of the tunnel volumehas already been excavated and thechanges in the local landscape areeverywhere. All of us, of course, havebeen affected by the unavoidabletraffic problems this construction hasbrought about and there are more tocome, but the long-term benefits toour City and our local economy areundeniable and should make all thecurrent headaches fade frommemory—eventually.

Our City’s new revitalized LansdownePark opened officially on August 16thand it is a beautiful facility with a worldclass stadium and ambitiousdevelopment plans. I encourageeveryone to pay a visit to this importantOttawa asset, the home of our rebornfootball franchise and the 67s.

In the Hamlet, this past summer wesaw yet another extremely successfulFun Fair, numerous street parties anda host of worthwhile fundraisingactivities. Local gardeners received aboost when the Gloucester AllotmentGardens added about a hundred new

plots east of the existing Orientgardens and much-neededimprovements were implemented atour Hornet’s Nest soccer fields as well.

On the ever-persistent traffic front, the Blackburn CommunityAssociation undertook to installspecial signs in an effort to slow downtraffic on Bearbrook as well other localstreets where speeding has alwaysbeen a concern and, with a newschool year beginning, I urge alldrivers to make a special effort towatch students and school buses andrespect speed limits. The Ottawapolice will be conducting enforcementof speeds and other violations as the

start of the school year rolls around.

A reminder that registration isunderway for Fall/Winter Cityprograms. Registration can now beeasily done online at the City website(www.ottawa.ca) where detailedprogram information is also available.

Thanks to all of those who haveextended good wishes re myupcoming retirement but, for now,our office is still operating at fullcapacity and, as always, we welcomeyour comments, questions andsuggestions (613-580-2472 [email protected]). We will doour best to resolve any municipalissues causing you concern.

Ottawa makes history as the summer of 2014 ends

Please be extra careful in September as the children return to school. Note that the OttawaPolice will be conducting enforcement of speeds and other violations.

Iam still in awe that our 12 and 13-year old girls went to Peru, including

Machu Picchu, for two weeks with theGuides’Amies. Everyone we tell asks“with Girl Guides? —Boy, Girl Guidessure have changed since I was young!”We proceed to tell them that we havean AWESOME leader and Maîtrise andthat the girls and parents are reallylucky! Thank you, Thank you, Thankyou again!Victoria LOVED everything about hertrip. How could she not? She took eightplanes in two weeks, went to Lima,Pucallpa, Cuzco and Machu Picchu. Thegirls and leaders helped finish buildinga house for a poor family that they hadbeen funding through a Canadianpriest, Gérald Veilleux who is living inPucallpa. They literally built and nailedthe boards of the back wall (with ahammer and nails—no nail gun) and

painted the whole exterior of the houseand half of the interior. They went on atype of Amazonian riverboat cruise, met a family of six that they hadsponsored to buy school uniforms sothe kids to attend school, swam withmini piranhas, rode in MotoKars (halfmotorcycles/half rickshaws), took atrain up into the mountains, went toMachu Picchu, a “Wonder of theWorld”, went to catacombs, put theirfeet in the Pacific Ocean, visited

cathedrals, saw a colourful andanimated Saint Jean Baptiste dayparade, saw lots of lamas and alpacas, went to see a live stage show of LittleShop of Horrors in Spanish and metthe actors and directors afterwards. They shopped and negotiated outdoormarkets, and all in all had a great time!

Every September, children head off into a brand newschool year. It is traditionally an exciting time and a

source of great memories. But for many families inBlackburn Hamlet, it is a time of anxiety and hardship asthey struggle to find the extra dollars for all of the necessarysupplies.

In 2003-2004, the Lifecentre saw this challenge occurringin the community and decided to do something about it.So on a sunny Saturday at the Emily Carr School grounds,an event was created to simply give away these necessitiesto those in need: The Blackburn Bonanza. Brand newbackpacks; full of all important school supplies likecoloured pencils, paper, erasers, pens, pencil cases andmore, were handed out free to any family who showed upand asked for one. It was a rousing success! So everyAugust, for the past 10 years, the Lifecentre has continuedthis special event to simply bless those who would benefitfrom some assistance in their back-to-school preparations.

“You’ve probably seen one of our volunteers with a T-Shirtthat says: ‘Here to Serve’ on the back,” said Pastor MichelCastilloux, who leads the Blackburn campus. “That’s theheart behind Lifecentre in all our locations in Blackburn,

Orleans and Kanata.”

The day’s specific events mayhave altered from year to year, but the central theme ofsimple sharing with people in thecommunity through anatmosphere of welcoming fun andcelebration has never changed.

“We try to make our location a warmenvironment that allows people to feelcomfortable, regardless of the reasonwhy they may be coming through ourdoor,” added Pastor Michel.

This year’s edition of the Blackburn Bonanzaon Sunday August 24th saw 225 backpacks fullof school supplies given out. Free haircuts werealso given to kids who came through the “hair salon” setup during the two hour event. And those who cameenjoyed lots of entertainment choices with facedecoration, an air-bounce castle and train rides on theLifecentre Express, along with plenty of hot dogs, chipsand soda to top off a great day had by all!
