Lesson 4 - ChristopherColumbus • Christopher Columbus was born in the

Italian port town of Genoa. • He began sailing at the age of 14.• Columbus believed that he could

reach the Far East by going westacross the Atlantic Ocean, and hopedto bring back precious silks and spicesby sailing this route.

• Columbus set off with three ships (LaSanta Maria, La Pinta and La Niña)from the Spanish port of Palos in1492, on his first voyage, financed byKing Ferdinand and Queen Isabella ofSpain.

• 33 days later, on October 12th 1492,Columbus reached land, a small islandin the Bahamas, thought to be SanSalvador. The islanders referred to itas Guanahaní.

• Columbus was sure that he hadreached somewhere in the Indies(Asia) and this is why he called thenative people ‘Indians’.

• The native people were found byColombus to be peaceful andgenerous. They shared their food andpossessions with their visitors. However, the Spanish sailors stolecotton, cinnamon and other naturalresources and also took prisoners fromamong the islanders to sell as slaves. The islanders caught diseases from theSpaniards that killed many of them.

• Columbus’ expedition took three ships equipped with a year’s supplies.Among the things they took withthem were: barrels of fresh water, jarsof oil, salt, flour, salted meats, netsand hooks for fishing, wood for fuel, sacks to sleep on and beads and red

woolen caps for trading. The sailorsworked very hard. They spent a lot oftime up in the rigging, adjusting thesails so that the ships would work asefficiently as possible. They had onehot meal a day, cooked over a woodfire. Sometimes they fished, and freshfish for lunch was considered a treat. The captain of each ship slept in acabin, but the sailors slept whereverthey could on the floor. Theconditions were very uncomfortableand all ships carried rats, fleas andmaggots.

• A compass and an astrolabe were themain navigating tools.

• On Columbus’ journey back to Spain,he took many things to show that hehad discovered new lands, but not thesilks, spices and gold he had hopedfor. Some of the things he took wereparrots, pumpkins, pineapples, cottonand the crew quickly copied theislanders’ method of sleeping inhammocks.

Lessons 6 and 7 – GhostTowns A ghost town is a town where peopleused to live but they no longer do. Mostof these towns became uninhabited foreconomic or ecological reasons. Thereare many ghost towns in the westernpart of the U.S.A.. Most of these townswere settled by miners. Often, the minesoffered the only real employment. Whenthe mines closed, people left and thetowns gradually became deserted. Someghost towns have been restored, so thattourists can visit them and learn aboutlife in the Old West.

Lesson 8 – Forests Forests are extraordinary places thatcover almost a third of the Earth’s land. They provide shade, food and shelter foran enormous variety of plants andanimals.

Forests are invaluable to Earth. Not onlyare they places of beauty and recreation, but all over the world people rely ontrees for fuel, food, raw materials andmedicine. Even more importantly, foresttrees and plants ensure that thetemperature on Earth is livable and thatwe have enough oxygen to breathe!

One of the greatest threats to theseforests is fire. Fire can destroy not onlythe lives and homes of the forests’ plantsand animals, but those of the peoplewhose communities are nearby. Can aforest ever recover? The answer is yesBUT, unfortunately, it can take alifetime, or longer! An average forest oftrees is about 70–100 years old and insome forests there are trees that are4,000–5,000 years old.

Grammar

There was/There wereWe use there was/there were to talkabout something for the first time. Weoften use it to discuss facts.

Example:In the time of the Aztecs, there was abig lake near Tenochtitlan.

This lake was called Texcoco.

Do not confuse there was/there werewith the adverb there.

Example:There was a truck on the street.

I couldn’t park in front of my housebecause the truck was there. (adverb)

Do not confuse there was/there werewith their.

Example:There were ten children in the park.

Their teacher was with them.

Quantifiers A lot of and lots of have the samemeaning and are used with both countand non-count nouns. So There are a lotof bikes in the street. is the same asThere are lots of bikes in the street.

Much is not used in positive statements. We don’t say, e.g. I have much money.(INCORRECT) Instead we say, e.g. I have alot of money.

Lesson 4 – Footprints andTracks

Homeschool Connection – Tipsfor Recording Tracks and Signs Taking pictures is an excellent way ofrecording what you see. However, ifchildren don’t have access to a camera, take a sheet of clear plastic and apermanent marker and trace over thetracks you see. This is important as it willgive children an idea of the shape ofeach footprint, as well as the position ofone footprint in relation to another andthe distance between footprints. Thishelps determine speed, direction and thekind of movement of the animal.

Another excellent way of making acollection of tracks is by taking plastercasts of tracks. The basic process is this:You make a ring with a strip ofcorrugated cardboard (30 cm. x 5 cm.)around the outside of the track. You clipthe cardboard into place to stop it fromunraveling. You mix and pour plaster ofParis into the card ring. Leave it to dryfor 15 minutes. Lift it out of the groundwith a blunt knife. Take it home andclean it up with a soft toothbrush. Paintthe actual track so that it shows up

more. Varnish the whole piece of plasterof Paris so that it doesn’t get damagedeasily. Tell children that if they want totry out this method, they should alwaysbe accompanied by an adult.

Children should always write downwhen and where they saw the tracks, measure the size of each footprint andthe distance between them.

Good places to look for animal tracksare: on muddy paths, in front ofburrows, places near water. You may alsofind scratch marks on the bark of trees, and under fruit trees, you may findpartly eaten fruit or seeds.

Other signs apart from footprints, whichtell you about animals that have been inthe area and how they behaved are:nests (but be careful only to collectabandoned nests), bones, feathers, partly eaten fruit and nuts. Whateverchildren collect, encourage them towrite down the date and place where itwas collected.

Guess What!

The YetiThe Yeti is the name given to anunknown creature that has been sightedby several travelers to the Himalayas. Most people report it to be a large, hairy, ape-like creature, but there hasnever been any concrete evidence of itsexistence. Tracks of a large animal havebeen found in the snow, but skepticsbelieve that these are probably thetracks of Tibetan bears that also live inthe region. The word Yeti is the localpeople’s word for ‘magical creature’.

Grammar

The Past Progressive Tense The past progressive tense (also calledthe past continuous tense) is commonlyused in English for actions that weregoing on (were not finished) at aparticular time in the past.

Past Progressive – FormationThis tense is formed using twocomponents: the verb be (in the pasttense), and the -ing form of a verb. Hereare the rules, using the example verbwork:

Subject Be -ing formI wasYou wereHe wasShe was workingIt wasWe wereThey were

The past progressive is used to givebackground information in a description.

Example:It was a beautiful day. The sun wasshining. The children were playing. Theirparents were having lunch.

We can also use this tense when we talkabout an action that had already startedand was still continuing at a particulartime.

Example:At five o’clock, it was raining.

We can use this tense to describe TWOactions that were BOTH continuing atthe same time in the past. In this case,

we use the past progressive for bothactions:

Example:While I was reading, she was sleeping.

The past progressive is also used whenone action began before another, andfinished after it.

Example:I was cooking when he arrived.

Past Progressive – SpellingBe careful with some words whenadding -ing to the infinitive.

If there is a consonant after a short, stressed vowel at the end of the word, then double the consonant.sit – he was sittingput - he was putting

If there is one -e at the end of the word, leave out the -e.write – he was writing

If the verb ends in -ie, change -ie to -y.lie - he was lying

Create Ideas for SuccessfulPrint Pictures• Use a variety of techniques, so the

actual finger/potato prints stand out.If a painting is all covered withfingerprints, it will be difficult todistinguish one object from another.

• Encourage children to enhance theirfingerprints using details made withpens or paintbrushes. For example, first the child paints a tree using apaintbrush, and then uses a leaf orpotato to print on the leaves. Then

the child uses fingerprints of acontrasting color to make a caterpillarin the tree. The details of a caterpillar(i.e. the eyes, legs, etc.) can be drawnusing a pen or pencil. The contrastbetween different techniques andcolors will help objects to stand out.

• Encourage children to add other kindsof materials to make a kind ofcollage. Feathers could be used tomake a parrot’s tail for example, orpieces of paper can be used in mosaicform to fill in the sky.

• The simpler a design, the moreeffective it will be. Encourage childrento choose one subject to focus on,such as a spider in a spider’s web, or a caterpillar on a leaf.

Who Destroyed the Roses?

“I love watching the Olympics.” Nina said to Max. “Did Rush win the big

race?” “No, he didn’t. He fell and Douglas won,” said Max. Suddenly

they heard a loud scream from Mr. Thornton’s house. They ran into the

Mr. Thornton’s garden. He was looking at his rose bushes. All the flowers

were on the ground. “That’s terrible,” cried Nina. “Who did this?”

Mr. Thornton said, “I don’t know. There was a boy outside. He was

running away.” “Mr. Thornton said the roses were all right at nine. But at

ten, he found them on the ground.” Max said. Nina pointed. “There’s Alex

and Mike over in the park.” “Someone destroyed Mr. Thornton’s flowers.

Where were you this morning between nine and ten?” Nina asked. “I was

helping my father in the garden. You can go ask him,” Alex answered.

“I was at the library. Ask my mom.” Mike said. Max said to Nina, “Let’s

go talk to Sam.” They went to Sam’s house. “Someone destroyed

Mr. Thornton’s roses. What were you doing between nine and ten?” said

Nina. “I was watching the Olympics, “ said Sam. “It was exciting, wasn’t

it?” said Nina. “Yes, it was. Rush is a great runner. I’m glad he won.”

“I know who destroyed the roses.” said Nina.

Grammar

Simple Past – Regular Verbs The regular past always ends in –d, e.g.arrive/arrived.

For verbs ending in -e add –d, e.g.phone/phoned, smile/smiled. This ruleapplies equally to agree, die, lie, etc.

For verbs not ending in -e add –ed, e.g.ask/asked, clean/cleaned,follow/followed, stop/stopped

For verbs spelled with a single vowelletter followed by a single consonantletter, double the consonant, e.g.plan/planned

When there’s a consonant before -y, the ‘y’ changes to ‘i’ before we add –ed,e.g. carry/carried, try/tried.

Note: stay/stayed which has a vowelbefore -y and therefore we simply add -ed in the past.

This rule is for your information only.

In two-syllable verbs, the final consonantis doubled when the last syllablecontains a single vowel letter followedby a single consonant letter and isstressed, e.g.: pre’fer/preferred,re’fer/referred.

Note: ‘benefit/benefited, ‘differ/differedand ‘profit/profited which are stressedon their first syllables and whichtherefore do not double their finalconsonants. In American English labeled, quarreled, signaled and traveled followthe rule.

In British English labelled, quarrelled, signalled and travelled are exceptions tothe rule.

The Ant and the Grasshopper

In a field one summer’s day, a Grasshopper was hopping and

singing happily. An Ant walked by. He was carrying a very large

ear of corn.

“Come and play with me,” said the Grasshopper, “It’s a beautiful

day. It isn’t a good day for working.”

“I’m helping to put away food for the winter and you should do

the same,” said the Ant.

“Don’t worry about winter, we have a lot of food right now.”

said the Grasshopper.

But the Ant continued working. When the winter came, the

Grasshopper was very hungry. He had nothing to eat. The Ant

was happy. He had a lot of food in his nest. One day he saw

the Grasshopper. The hungry grasshopper said, “I don’t have

any food.”

The Ant felt sorry for the poor Grasshopper. He said, “I will give

you some food. But next summer you must work.”

Lesson 4 – Marine Life

Examples of Marine Life

OctopusThe octopus is a mollusk. It has no shell. It has eight arms or tentacles, a pouch-

shaped body and large eyes. It preys on crabs, lobsters and other shell fish. Its prey is grabbed by the tentacles, paralyzed by a poisonous secretion andthen chewed by the octopus’ jaws.

The octopus hides in rocky crevices if itfeels in danger and often obscures thewater by ejecting a dark ink from theink sac.

The octopus ranges in size from 5cm. to91cm. The larger American devilfish isfound off the coast of Florida and theWest Indies.

StingrayA stingray is a flat, marine fish related tothe shark. Its pectoral fins look like flatwings attached to the sides of the head, and stingrays propel themselves along inthe water by rippling these fins. Raysfeed on a variety of smaller animals, andhave heavy rounded teeth that are usedto crush the shells of snails and clams.

Stingrays have a serrated spine whichcan be used to lash out at times ofdanger. These can inflict very painful and poisonous lacerations.

Shell fishShell fish is the name given to certainedible molluscs, such as oysters, clamsand scallops, and also to ediblecrustaceans, such as crabs and lobsters. They are not fish: they are all aquaticinvertebrates with shells.

CoralCorals are small, sedentary marineanimals. They grow in warm andtemperate zones but are more

frequently found in warm shallow water. There are more than 200 species of coralin the Great Barrier Reef of Australia.

SharksSharks are almost exclusively marine fish. There are about 250 species of sharks, ranging from a length of 61cm. to150cm. They live in all oceans, but preferwarm waters. Most are predatory butsome of the larger species, such as thewhale shark and the basking shark, areplankton eaters.

PlanktonPlankton are very small or microscopicorganisms. They generally do not havethe ability to move along of their ownaccord and just float in the water.

Human Impact on Ocean Life Human beings impact on ocean life in anumber of different ways:

Pollution• trash is left on beaches in huge

quantities to wash away into theoceans,

• cruise ships dump waste into theoceans,

• oil spills,• chemical drainage from agricultural

land that is adjacent to the oceans.

Habitat Destruction Human beings develop marine land forbuilding or tourism use.

Introduction of Alien Species Ships traveling around the globe pick upmarine species on their hulls and ballastwater and these creatures get takeninadvertently to other areas of the

ocean. Many just die out but somesurvive and outcompete with the nativespecies, leaving an unbalancedecosystem.

FishingFishing nets trap any kind of fish, notjust the fish the fishing boats set out to catch. Millions of dolphins and othersea creatures have been killed becauseof this.

Guess What! The sailfish is related to the swordfishand the marlin. It has a high, wide dorsalfin, which is colored deep blue withblack spots. It was given the namesailfish because of this fin. Its size rangesfrom about 153cm. – 304cm. Its speed ismeasured by attaching it to a line, andon letting it free to swim, determininghow much line is used up in a givenamount of time. It’s thought to be oneof the fastest fish in the ocean.
