Welcome to our Spring term Sports Newsletter The Spring term can often be a challenge for our sports clubs and teams
with dark evenings and cold weather. This term has been no different, with the
‘Beast from the East’ wiping out up to 10 days of sport from our calendar,
including several football, netball and cross country events.
Then came the rain! This played havoc with more cross country dates and
made parts of our school course extremely muddy…..nonetheless we have had
more than our fair share of success stories. You will read about individual
brilliance in cross country, team success in indoor athletics and a winning pair of
orienteers! We have also had inter house swimming, cross country and a steady
flow of football and netball fixtures – many things to be proud of from our young
sports men and women.
Once again, a huge thank you from the PE department for all pupils,
parents and colleagues who have helped facilitate a busy schedule and we look
forward to improved weather, athletics, cricket, rounders and of course

Amazing feat!
Matthew won both of the races in this
Cross Country series which is the first
time this has ever been done by a
Brewood Middle School pupil. Both races
were run in very difficult conditions and
running against more than
100 competitors . Coming first in both
races is an amazing achievement, and you
can see Matthew receiving his individual
award .
Well done Matthew, what a fantastic
effort!

Cross Country Successes Representing Staffordshire at Rodbaston College On Saturday 3rd February we
had 5 of our leading cross
country runners in Year 7 & 8
represent Staffordshire at
Rodbaston College; Dominic,
Freya and Isabelle in Year 8 and
Eliza Rae and Angel in Year 7.
To even reach this standard is
an amazing achievement and
they all should be very proud
of themselves.
Dominic however, running
against Year 8 and 9 boys in his
category finished an
unbelievable 6th overall and as
a result has been invited to run
in the English School Cross
Country Championships in Leeds
on March 17th!
Dominic runs for Wolverhampton
& Bilston Athletics club and
they will no doubt be as proud
as Brewood Middle School and his parents and friends are of his amazing achievement.
We are all really proud of
Dominic’s achievements
with his Cross Country
running in the English
Schools Championships this
year.
Against competitors over
12 months older than him,
he did amazingly well.
Huge congratulations.

Remember, to count in the league you must attend all races and have 4 finishers at least
On the 17th of March, I qualified
for and competed in the English
Schools Cross Country
Championships at Temple Newsam
Park in Leeds.
The best runners of my age group
and the year above in England
competed in my race. The
competitors were from Cornwall,
London, Newcastle, Manchester
and many more. There was well
over 50 teams at the event. At 1
o’clock all 546 of the competitors
went over to the start line. We
were all put into pens. I was 6th
from the front in my pen when I
qualified I came 6th. We were
running a 4100 metre course.
The start was chaos. The gun
went off and hundreds of us all
sprinted off. All around people
were falling over, tripping up due
to the close gap between each
person. It was hardcore cross
country. At parts we were in knee
deep mud. We were running in -6
degrees and the wind really
affected me when running.
After 2 laps, there was
100 metres left. Even being as
tired as I was I still managed a
sprint finish and went past
quite a few competitors. I came
275th. At the time I was
disappointed with myself. Going
from 6th to 275th is a big
difference, but looking back at
it, I did really well coming up
against the best in England in
my year and the year above, it’s
a really big achievement for me
to have competed.

Year 7 & 8 netball ‘v’ St Dominics Tuesday 9th January
In the first fixture of the New Year, we made the short journey to St Dominic’s Sports Hall for a friendly
evening of netball.
The teachers decided to
make the Year 8 game a
‘coaching game’ and mix the
girls from the two schools
up. This worked very well
and allowed the Brewood
girls to play with players
they had not met before
and made for a very even
game where the skill level
improved rapidly during the
session.
The Year 7 game was more
of a competitive fixture as
these two teams have been
very evenly matched in the
past. The game again was very close with both teams passing the ball well and creating plenty of scoring
opportunities. At the half time break St Dominic’s were in the lead 3-2 although Brewood had perhaps more
shots at goal so had plenty of reason to be optimistic.
The second half display was again fairly even, although Brewood managed to grab 3 goals through Mia(1)
who found her shooting range and she was very well supported by Mia (2) in attack. The remainder of the
team, captained by Bella, managed to not concede a second half goal and secured a brilliant 5-3 victory.
Well done to all participants and once again to St Dominic’s for being super hosts.
Cross Country at Pingle Slade
On a cold Tuesday evening, year 5 and Year 6 Cross Country runners competed at Pingle Slade,
Cannock Chase. Conditions were extremely difficult due to poor weather making the course very wet in
places. All of our pupils performed well but Matthew ran an exceptional race and won overall. All pupils
can be really proud of their efforts. Well done.
Year 6 Cross Country at
Wolverhampton Grammar School. Thursday 11th January
In an invitational cross country event, the first ever at Wolverhampton Grammar School, our top
runners took on pupils from Perton Middle, Codsall Middle, The Royal School, St Bartholomews and the
hosts, Wolverhampton Grammar.
Running over a 2km course, mostly on sodden grass, this was a challenging race for all competitors,
with a tough climb near the end of the route. Our leading boy was Matthew, finishing in a very
impressive 4th. He was followed home by the trio, Ricky(14th), Freddie(15th) and Thomas(16th) closely
followed by Gene(19th).
In the girls category Amelia was Brewood’s leading runner in a brilliant 2nd place — an outstanding
achievement! The remainder of the girls team also ran their heart out and finished in
the following positions; Kaia(11th), Maisie (12th) , Madi(20th), Jodie (21st) and Shruti
(23rd).
When both sets of scores were combined, Perton Middle were overall winners,

On the 25th January 2018,
Two year 6 teams travelled to Codsall High School to play football against
Perton Middle School. Both schools brought two teams so each team played
three fixtures on the 3G surface, including a game against their peers.
Perton Middle proved to be strong opposition with one of our teams
registering a win and a loss and the other team unfortunately losing both
games. The match between the two Brewood sides proved to be a close
encounter with team one going ahead early on only for William to score a
well-executed volley to earn a draw.
Team 1: Thomas, Noah, Jacob, George, Matthew and Reece ( GK)
Team 2: Samuel, Jadon, William, Ricky, Harrison, Isaac and William.
Well done to all those who took part.

Year 5 and 6 netball ‘v’ Perton Middle School
Playing at a Codsall High School against Perton on a
very cold evening, we had a very successful time
where both teams won handsomely.
On the Year 5 court, playing High 5’s and getting
plenty of coaching within the game, Brewood won
4-1. Libby and Tia shared the scoring but they
were very well supported by her teammates.
It was more convincing on the Year 6 court where
Brewood dominated the early exchanges with Tegan
and Lucy combined superbly in attack with Lucy
scoring the majority of the goals in 14-0 victory!
The Year 6 Girls, including some who we rested for
this fixture, are a very promising team who, with
continued hardwork and practice, could be a
formidable team in the coming years at Brewood!
Well done to our KS2 netballers!
Eliza-Rae with some of her swimming medals from this year.
Huge congratulations for doing so well.

On Thursday 18th January, we took 24 year 5’s who
were keen to play football, over to Codsall High
School to play on their 3G football pitch against
Codsall Middle School. We played a variety of different six a
side games, in very tough weather conditions.
Brewood played very well on each pitch and gave Codsall
some tough competition throughout the evening and managed to
win some of the games that they played. This was the first of
many football fixtures that the year 5’s had taken part and
they showed that there is plenty of potential there to build a
strong team.
Following last weeks introduction to school football for
the Year 5’s, we took 12 year 5’s over to Codsall High
School again however to play against Perton Middle
School this time. We played against two teams from
Perton and competed very well against a very strong
Perton squad. Again, there was some very promising
performances which is very good to see for the years to
come. Year 5 and 6 Cross Country at Nine Gates,
Cannock.
A group of 12 runners from Year 5 and 6
travelled to Nine Gates in Cannock to take part
in the final Cross Country race. Unfortunately,
due to the bad weather recently, this was only
the second race to be run out of four. Despite
the cold weather, all of our runners put in a
good performance, with most improving on their
placings from the previous race.
However, there must be a special
mention for Matthew in year 6 who managed to
win both of his races again!
Well done Matthew, huge congratulations!

Year 5 football ‘v’ Wolverhampton Grammar Junior School In the first competitive fixture against
Wolverhampton Grammar, our Year 5
footballers played in 3 small sided games
on our home pitches.
On pitch 1, the ‘Green team’ captained by
Myles had comfortable 7-0 victory.
Everyone contributed to the win:
goalkeeper Harry who kept a clean sheet
and directed his defenders well, Joseph
who was solid in defence and the
attacking trio of Ewan , Ewan and captain
Myles. The ‘Green team’ were mentored
by Kian from the sidelines who did a
sterling job.
On pitch 2, the ‘Blue team’ managed to win
9-0 and also played some of the best
football that I have seen from them so
far.
Our goals were scored by: Morgan,
Parker, Thomas, Will and Lewis.
During the second half in particular it was
nice to see the lads play some ‘proper’
football and get the ball on the floor to
pass it around; this resulted in 3 goals
where every outfield player touched the
ball before they went and scored.
A special mention must go to Parker and
Lewis who each played a half in goal
despite being outfield players normally.
Liam helped Mr Whitcut organise this
team.
Our ‘Gold team’ also had a convincing 7-1
victory with a similar tale to pitches 1 and
2 with real team work and an improved
level of passing from all involved. This
team were mentored and refereed by Will
and Harry who did an excellent job. They
nominated William as player of the match
but were impressed with every player’s
contribution.
It turned out to be a very
successful evening for our Year 5
footballers. Congratulations to them all.
The year 8 competition was just as fierce as the
year 7. The standard was extremely high in both
track and field events. Shot putt, vertical high jump,
standing long jump, triple jump etc. Dempsey and
Connor did particularly well in the Shot putt with
combined scores to come first scoring vital points
for the team. Dominic came first in the 6 lap adding
to the many points we achieved. Oliver, Will and
Harry added to our totals in the relay to give the
year 8’s a third place finish!
Well done to all involved—the school is very proud!
Sports Hall Athletics
On a very cold and snowy Wednesday some year 7
and 8 boy athletes travelled to Fenton in Stoke-
on-Trent to compete in the West Midlands Indoor
Athletics championships.
This was divided into two separate competitions
year 7 and year 8. All of the boys represented the
School in outstanding fashion, competing in their
races against a very high level of opposition. The
year 7 boys started strongly with Nathan showing
his stamina and pace. The year 7 boys worked
together as a team in the relay races and the field
events to produce some outstanding performances
well done to Regan, Ethan, Alasdair, Nathan, Josh,
Hayden and Owen.
Year 7 & 8 orienteering Championships Hanley Forest Park, Stoke-On-Trent
The annual Staffordshire orienteering Championships took place on a bitterly cold morning at Hanley Forest
Park. Early morning snow made the conditions the muddiest that the organisers had ever seen the course
and coupled with a biting wind, this was certainly a challenge for our pupils, The boys had to run a 2.4km
course (if they go the right way) pupils had to navigate using their map reading skills and locate 17 controls,
each time using their electronic dibber to register that they had visited that location in the correct order.
The girls had a different course, finding 16 controls over 2.3km.
Our leading 2 pairs from each cate-
gory were;
Year 8 boys
James and Sam 19.41 mins
Will and Harry 21.55 mins
Year 8 Girls
Evie and Grace 31.25 mins
Freya and Isabelle 33.37 mins
Year 7 boys
Owen and Alasdair 28.07 mins
Rohan and Peter 36.23 mins
Year 7 Girls
Bella and Faith 34.21 mins
Angel and Eliza Rae 39.07 mins
Despite the cold and the mud, the
pupils all enjoyed the experience and
being able to test their orienteering skills in a new setting.
Congratulations on such a successful orienteering venture.

Brewood took 3 girls’ football teams over
to Codsall High to take on Perton Middle
in 3 girls football games. We took a year

Year 7 football ‘v’ Penkridge
Tuesday 30th January
Playing on the 3G pitch at Wolgarston High School,
Brewood Year 7 took on their Penkridge
counterparts. This fixture was originally planned to
be 2 x 9 a-side matches but Penkridge had
availability issues and only had 11 players in total.
Adapting to the situation, Brewood made some last
minute team changes and made a solid start with
Braydee making a few early saves. The deadlock was broken when Penkridge pounced on a
ball breaking free in the penalty area and it was slotted home. Penkridge soon added two more goals and
Brewood found it hard to make any clear chances with the opposition goalkeeper sweeping up any potential
attacks. At half time, Brewood switched the entire team which wasn’t ideal in terms of continuity but ideal
in terms of keeping the boys warm! The game took a very similar pattern to the first half with Penkridge
providing much of the attacking football and Brewood looking to counter attack. In the end, this second game
also finished 3-0 to Penkridge. It was encouraging to see 22 boys from Brewood all keen to play and although
they were disappointed not to win they should be commended for their enthusiasm.
Our year 7 girls’ team performed very
well and despite going a goal behind, managed to pull it back and ended up going onto win 2-1 with goals
from Eliza-Rae . In the second half especially, Brewood dominated the game with strong performances
from all of the girls. This was very pleasing to see, considering many of these girls’ football experiences
were limited, even before the game had kicked off.

The Y6 Girls’ High 5 netball team competed
in the Level 2 South Staffs finals at Cheslyn

Autumn term.
The girls’ played very well throughout the
tournament, and finished in 3rd place out of
the 6 schools competing.
The girls’ won two matches, drew two
matches and lost one match out of the five
games played.
Well done girls’ on a
great team effort.
Year 7 futsal Level 3 finals on 13th February
As a result of winning the previous round at Codsall High School, our Year 7 footballers played in the Level 3
finals at Cheslyn Hay.
In the first game, we played eventual winners Codsall A and we matched them in every department and were
unlucky to go a goal behind. With the last kick of the game, Ethan grabbed an equaliser.
The second game was against Cheslyn Hay A and an early goal through Ethan looked like being enough
to secure the win but once again a last second equaliser was scored, this time against us. The third match
was a little more comfortable with a 2-0 victory over Cheslyn Hay B with Monty pulling off some remarkable
saves. The final game was vital: a win against Codsall B would mean that Brewood would qualify for the
County finals but Codsall did their A team a favour by defeating us 2-0.
Brewood finished 2nd overall, which is a
fantastic achievement nonetheless.

Year 6 Inter House Swimming Gala
This was the second year of this event and this time around it was just as
successful: 95% participation from Year 6 and a great deal of fun and some
healthy competition too!
The gala began with some races across the width of the pool aimed at
recreational swimmers and those who are not hugely confident in the deeper water.
Each and every pupil who swam, earned points for their House team.
Later on in the gala, there were some 1 length and 2 length races for our more competitive swimmers and
there were some fantastic times achieved.
The finale was the 4 x 1 length relay race.
It was fantastic to see so many parents and grandparents supporting from the spectator gallery, which
made the morning all the more enjoyable.

My Sports Hero
The PE department have recently launched a writing competition for Year 5, which involved creating a
piece of writing about their sports hero. The children were given the task as a homework project and the
results have been absolutely incredible.
We had a wide range of writing, such as biographies, fact files and posters. The PE department and Year 5
form tutors would like to congratulate all children on their effort and enthusiasm for this task, as it was
very difficult to narrow it down to one winner.
In the end, 4 pieces were selected per class and these were handed to Mr Downes,
who acted as the final judge.
After much consideration, it was decided that the winner of the competition is;
IZZAK of 5CG for his lovely fact file on the stunt BMX rider called Joe Maher.
Mr Downes liked the originality of the sport involved, the handwritten facts about
the sport and the rider himself and the project also included actual photographs of

DANCE THROUGH THE DECADES
On Wednesday 28th March, 49 Brewood Middle School pupils represented the school, and Dene Dance, at
the 10th Wolgarston High School dance festival.
The theme was ‘Dance through the decades’ and the show was spectacular.
There was a variety of dance genres from street, tap, ballet, modern, contemporary and everything in
between! The Brewood Middle School groups did 2 routines each and all 4 pieces were slick, professional
and very entertaining. Some of KS3 pupils danced in the Dene Dance School ensemble and wowed the
packed audience with their moves.
A huge congratulations to Mrs Stanton of Wolgarston High School for organising and coordinating
such a wonderful show and for the 10th year this has been a highlight of the calendar for 100s of pupils.
Also a massive thank you to Katy Bagguely who has worked tirelessly with the groups in preparation for the
show and to all of the parents who supported the girls throughout.
The last word must got to the Wolgarston staff who closed the show with a staff dance to the delight of
the crowd and I am sure it will be all across social media already!

raised, higher participation and a lot less stress getting so many pupils changed into kit!
We were also blessed with excellent conditions with a much drier course and sunny skies overhead.
You will see the overall results below but every child who gave a full and determined effort should be
congratulated. Many of the individual accolades went to runners who have excelled in cross country for
school this year but it was great to see mass participation and pupils cheering each other on and enjoying
running. Inter House Cross Country 2018 results
