REPORT SUMMARY
UNDERWATER INSPECTION
The substructure units of Bridge No. L8160, single reinforced concrete barrel, were found to be in satisfactory condition with areas of spalling and minor scaling. Two spalls were noted on the southeast wingwall with up to a 2 inch depth. The channel bottom was observed to be in satisfactory condition, consisting of a sandy infill with random cobbles.
(A) Channel bottom material consisted of sandy infill with random cobbles, up to a 12 inch diameter.
(B) Minor scaling, up to 1/4 inch deep, on both interior barrel walls was observed at the waterline extending to approximately 1 foot below.
(C) Two spalls observed on the southeast wingwall, measuring 1 square foot with a maximum 2 inch depth.

The routine underwater inspection of Bridge L8160 (MUN 1(Geneva Ave.) over Grey Cloud Channel) was completed on October 14, 2016. The underwater inspection was conducted from shore. The inspection was conducted by a team consisting of a PE-Diver with a valid MnDOT Team Leader certification, a backup diver and a dive tender. Due to waterway conditions at the time of inspection, the inspection could be accomplished by wading in accordance with OSHA regulations. Profiles were taken along the upstream and downstream faces of the bridge and around the periphery of substructure units to determine the presence, location and area of scour.
The bridge elements inspected consisted of single barreled concrete box culvert. According to the bridge inventory or design drawings, the barrel was 10 feet wide by 10 feet high. Inspection procedures followed FHWA guidance and the MnDOT Bridge and Structure Inspection Program Manual with channel bottom probing to search for foundations. The routine underwater inspection frequency is recommended to remain at a maximum of 60 months based on those findings and risk factors. Also, inspection procedures should continue to follow the above approach and standard guidance with 100% Level I and 10% Level II intensity efforts.
