Sunshine refl ected in public art Council has launched its latest public artwork, Refl exio Qualis at Sunshines bus interchange. The piece is the work of artist Col Henry and are located in the vicinity of Sunshine Railway Station near City Place on Hampshire Road. Refl exio Qualis is Latin for Refl ective Nature, and includes three installations which will literally refl ect Sunshine - our diverse, multicultural and progressive community.Refl exio Qualis is the latest addition to Brimbanks public artworks, which include, Seeds of Hopes and Dreams in St Albans and Spiral Graph Seat in Derrimut 61a Selwyn St, Albion, VIC 3020 61a Selwyn St, Albion. The works are made of polished stainless steel that will refl ect or relate to anyone who interacts with them.Col Henry worked with local schools and businesses to develop symbols that were etched into small stainless steel panels and attached to the installations. He is an experienced sculptor and dedicated teacher, with a commitment to public art.

Next Ordinary Council MeetingTuesday November 25, 7pm at the Sunshine Municipal Offi ces6-18 Alexandra Avenue, Sunshine.

New residential zones have been introduced in Brimbank following approval from the Minister for Planning. The new zones govern how land is used and developed in residential areas.

The Neighbourhood Residential Zone (low change) will ensure the protection of valued character and heritage areas, with no more than two homes to be built on a block and mandatory height controls.

The General Residential Zone (medium change) will allow unit and townhouse development similar to what already occurs in most residential areas.

The Residential Growth Zone (high change) will allow townhouse and apartment development in areas well serviced by public transport and close to community services.

New multi-unit development will continue to be subject to a planning permit process and residents and land owners will still be notifi ed about planning permit applications.

The changes only apply to what was formerly the Residential 1 Zone and do not relate to commercial, mixed use or industrial zones. Transitionary provisions apply to applications made before the zones took eff ect.

On 6 March 2013 the Victorian Government had introduced the new residential zones to guide the type of housing that can be built in diff erent residential areas. All Victorian Councils had until 30 June 2014 to introduce the new residential zones; otherwise the Minister for Planning would apply the new General Residential Zone to all residential land within the municipality.

The introduction of the new zones will provide more certainty for residential development across Brimbank, ensuring valued suburban character is maintained while also balancing the need for new housing.

Rare Commodore burnt in fireA fire that broke out in a panel beaters shed at Sunshine destroyed 10 cars, including a rare collectors-edition Commodore. The fire blanketed the suburb in such dense smoke on November 9 that nearby residents were warned to stay indoors and keep their windows and doors shut. Seven Metropolitan Fire Brigade trucks were called to Hampton Avenue after the fire broke out in an iron shed of the backyard panel-beating business. MFB spokesman Trevor Woodward said the business owner, a man in his 60s, was using welding equipment when a spark ignited the shed about 12.14pm. The fire caused an estimated $300,000 in damage.

Man on murder count bailedThirteen people armed with baseball bats, metal poles, edged weapons and chains were involved in a home invasion at Deer Park on Australia Day, which left a 20-year-old man dead, a court was told last week. Prosecutor James Henderson told the Supreme Court during a bail application for Benjamin Borg, 19 one of four men charged with murdering Michael Sleiman that Mr Borg had been involved in planning the home invasion after a former girlfriend told him she had been raped by one of the occupants of the Deer Park house. Borg allegedly then co-opted his cousin, Adam Power, 23, a Rebels outlaw motorcycle gang member, to help. Justice Cameron Macaulay bailed Mr Borg on strict conditions. He is due back in court for a committal mention this week.

A grassfire that burned across a vacant block in a Sunshine industrial estate on Ballarat Road last week is not being treated as suspicious.

The fire broke out about 2.45pm last Monday near the back of the ARC factory on Ballarat Road, spreading quickly past Hulett Street.

Plumes of smoke were visible from the Western Ring Road.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman Bruce Weaver said the fire was put out by 3.55pm.

Eight fire trucks attended the scene.The vacant block, believed to be more than 10

hectares, is owned by Brimbank council and is a former tip site.

Sunshines long-awaited hospital has started to become a reality. Planning of stage one of the multimillion-dollar project gets under way this week. A Sunshine Community Hospital committee of management has been appointed and will be led by president Fred Grundy.

Under stage three of the Westplan, released on Monday, $30,000 will be spent on improving the St Albans shopping centre and $60,000 will go towards two ethnic community workers. The workers will give an understanding of the needs of the ethnic communities.

A St Albans mother is furious after her 12-year-old son suffered first-degree burns when playing with friends at the Keilor Downs skate ramp in Taylors Road. The mother, who did not want to be named, said two teenagers set a fire in a cavity under the metal skate ramp and pushed her son down on it. The fire caused the metal ramp to heat up and sear his tracksuit pants. Shocked and terrified, the boy tried in vain to put out the fire.
