Last week we were very excited to hear that our 2019 Year 12 student results ranked highest in the Bundaberg and district State High Schools. On Thursday 13th February, we had our Meet the Teachers afternoon. Approximately 115 parents and family members attended. It was great to see so many parents taking the opportunity to meet their son/daughter’s teachers for the year. Thank you to everyone who attended. The afternoon was then followed by our first P&C meeting that was also well attended. Thank you to our new members who joined and to those returning. We are always happy to welcome parents to the committee. Our next meeting will be our AGM and our Treasurer Leanne Richardson is stepping down from the position after many years and we will be looking for a new Treasurer. I’d like to thank Leanne sincerely for her lengthy commitment to the P&C. I would encourage all parents to consider joining the P&C. On March 16-18 we will be having our School Review. OUTSTANDING LEARNERS

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS OUTSTANDING FUTURES

No. 3, 26th February 2020

Principal’s Report… Bundaberg North SHS achieved the top State High school Year 12 results in the Bundaberg district.

Last week we were very excited to hear that our 2019 Year 12 student results ranked highest in the

Bundaberg and district State High Schools. As mentioned in our first newsletter, we had 28.6% with OP1-5

and two OP1s. Outstanding results. We are looking forward to following their career paths.

On Thursday 13th February, we had our Meet the Teachers afternoon. Approximately 115 parents and

family members attended. It was great to see so many parents taking the opportunity to meet their

son/daughter’s teachers for the year. Thank you to everyone who attended. The afternoon was then

followed by our first P&C meeting that was also well attended. Thank you to our new members who joined

and to those returning. We are always happy to welcome parents to the committee. Our next meeting will

be our AGM and our Treasurer Leanne Richardson is stepping down from the position after many years and

we will be looking for a new Treasurer. I’d like to thank Leanne sincerely for her lengthy commitment to the

P&C. I would encourage all parents to consider joining the P&C.

On March 16-18 we will be having our School Review. This is a four yearly review and the recommendations

from the review form the basis for the development of our future Strategic Plan. The external review team

will be contacting parents, community members along with students and staff. Thank you to the parents

who have already agreed to participate in an interview with the review team. The review team will be

looking at how North has progressed since our 2016 review and how we are currently working on improving

student outcomes for all students.

On Friday 21 February, we held our annual

swimming carnival. This day was very

successful with many students competing

and participating throughout the day. A

big thank you to our sports coordinator Mr

Thatcher, Sport and House captains and

staff for running the day of events. It was

very good to see so many students

involved. While the day was very hot we continually reminded students to apply sunscreen and wear shirts.

Many students got into the spirit of the day dressing up either for our ‘Aussie’ theme or in house colours.

Congratulations to all involved.

Also on Friday we took advantage of our school facilities being available and ran a Year 6 Experience Day and

invited all our feeder primary school year 6 students to North to experience a variety of curriculum activities

that will be offered in Year 7 next year. Students visited our Science labs, kitchens, Industrial technology

workshops and participated in a variety of activities. Student feedback was very positive with students

returning to their schools very excited after the day of activities. Thank you to Mrs Gray (Junior School Head

of Department) for organising the day and to the teachers who conducted the activities. We hope that

many of the students who attended will choose North as their school of choice in 2021.

Year 12 - Big Day Out

The Big Day Out is an awesome opportunity to connect

with fellow peers that creates growth and friendships

between each other. The Year 12 Big Day Out was an

exciting trip via a bus to Bucca Retreat. The itinerary

included an enjoyable time on the water slide (the walk

up the stairs to the top was really worth it!), a fun raft-

building activity that used our problem solving skills, a

small video project conducted by Mrs Appleby and finally

an awesome and time-crunching obstacle course that

tested our strength, teamwork and agility. It was an

amazing day with lots of leadership opportunities,

relationship building and fun.

The business of starting a business

Our Year 11 Business students are currently

learning all about the business life cycle and in

particular what is involved in the start-up phase

for a new business. Thank you to Mrs Suzie Clarke

who visited our class to discuss how the idea for

her business “Bundy Food Tours” came about.

Suzie gave us an insight into what it is required to

start up a business like hers, the costs and legal

requirements involved, strategic planning and

how best to grow the business. The students will

be able to apply this knowledge now to what they

are currently learning about in class.

Instrumental Music Visit – Wednesday 19th February

Last week, 11 of our talented Instrumental Music students

travelled to North Bundaberg State School to perform for

their students.

It was a great experience for all. Well done to Mrs

Christensen for organising the first performance of the

year.

School Swimming Carnival

A great day was had by all, results will be

posted in the next newsletter so stayed

tuned. We can release that the teachers

reigned supreme in the teachers v

students relay swim even though the

students were somewhat relaxed in

abiding by the rules.

Sand mining excursion On Tuesday the 18th of February, the year 12 Earth and environmental science class went on a field trip to Sunstate Sands sand mine at Coonarr. Students got to see the mine where the sand is extracted, the area that is being rehabilitated post-mining, the wet processing plant and the dry processing plant. This was a real eye opener to students about the quality of the sand at Coonarr, being 99.8% silica, and the products it is used for, including the bottles that are used for Bundaberg Brewed Drinks and the grout between tiles. Students have been learning about extraction and processing of non-renewable resources and the environmental monitoring and management that mines are required to complete, so it was great to have an opportunity to see this in real life. Thank you to Matt Holloway and the team at Sunstate Sands for showing us around and talking us through the steps of sand mining and processing.

Student Council update

The first student council meeting of 2020 commenced, in other

words the first step to achieving this year’s aspirations. This

meeting involved all senior executive council members (grade

12) and grade 11 and 10 representatives. Emily Kosten shared

this sentiment and described the meeting as such: “The first

student council meeting was a successful event that allowed for

students to communicate effectively in a group setting. It

flourishes leadership skills by allowing our council

representative to help bring ideas from the students to the

forefront of people's mind and I am very excited to help

implement them into the school. I can only imagine that this is

the start of an amazing year.”

Badge ceremony

This year’s, year 12 students celebrated

officially becoming seniors as they each

walked the stage to receive their senior

badges. All student council members were

also acknowledged and presented with

their badges. I think Tyler Poole

summarised perfectly, he had this to say

about it: “The badge ceremony was a great

opportunity to recognise and celebrate the

leadership of all newly appointed student

council members and commitment of all

year 12 students” – Tyler Poole, School

Captain.

Thank you to all the parents/ family

members who attended, we are all looking

forward to a great year with even greater

achievements.

Library news. It’s an exciting day when new books arrive! It’s even more exciting when you know that EVERY single one of these books has been requested by students this year, delivered to them in the first term. How, I hear you ask? We encourage students to fill out request forms when we do not have the books that THEY want to read. And believe me, it works! We have already loaned out more than 3000 books and magazines!

Work experience – Year 11 and 12

The first round of work placement for the Gateway to Industry Schools program will take place in the upcoming Easter holiday block (6/4 to 17/4). These will be two lots of 4 day blocks. Year 11 and 12 students will have the opportunity for work experience placement in the following career areas:

Project Management

Estimating

Contract management

Surveying

Town Planning

This is open to Year11 & 12 students (those looking at a university pathway) that may not be sure what they are looking to study or are unaware of the opportunities that the construction industry can offer. They are looking for high quality students for this program so local employers see great value in being involved now and into the future. If interested, please see Mrs Nicholls in (B block).

Gateway to Industry Schools Program – Construction Industry

Bundaberg North High School has formed a partnership with Construction Skills Queensland to become a Gateway to Industry

School for the Building and Construction Industry in Bundaberg. The Gateway to Industry Schools Program is a Queensland

Government initiative of the Department of Small Business and Training. This program aims to create opportunities for

students to be exposed to a range of learning experiences that can assist with planning their future career choices and

pathways into employment in para-professional roles in the construction industry.

The first round of work placements will take place in the Easter holidays. There will be two lots of 4-day blocks in the following

areas.

Project Management, Estimating, Contract Management, Surveying, OH&S and Town Planning.

If you have a student currently in Years 11 and 12 (looking at a university pathway) who may not be sure what they are looking

to study or are unaware of the opportunities that the construction industry can offer, this is an excellent opportunity for them.

The link below will assist you in explaining to your student what some of the careers are. This will give you access to fact

sheets. https://www.csq.org.au/para-professional-job-profiles/

If your student is interested in taking advantage of these placements, please have them come and see me. If you would like

further information I can be contacted by phone on 4130 0280 Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday or by email at

Year 10 Work Experience Program

As part of their career education program, year 10 students are required to take part in a 5 day work experience program.

This year the program will be held from Monday the 15th to Friday 19th of June. Students are required to find their own work

experience placement just as they would post school with an employer. The purpose of the work experience is to allow the

student to acquire knowledge of the real world of work and to assist them with subject selection for their final two years at

school. The program has been extremely helpful for students in the past giving them the opportunity to try areas of

employment and gain firsthand knowledge of the duties they would have to do if they decided to seek employment in that

area. Students have been offered School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships, as well as casual employment from their

placements in the past.

As competition for placements is high, students should be looking now to secure a placement in the profession they prefer. I

am happy to assist students with a list of employers in various industries in the local area if they are having difficulty deciding

who to contact.

All Year 10 students have received, a letter to give to an employer to explain the program, a form to provide details for the

training agreement and information on the Departments work experience insurance scheme. If students are unable to access

these forms copies are available from the school. It would be appreciated if parents could start having a conversation now

with students in regards to finding a placement for this program. Students are monitored closely during their placements

with phone calls and visits from teachers and myself. If you are a businessperson or if the business you work for could offer a

student a position, I would be very happy to hear from you.
