MESSAGE FROM OUR MENAHEL
Dear Parents, Lag B’Omer is the day that Rabbi Akiva brought the world back from a desolate state of darkness. The Gemara in (סב) יבמות tells us that 24,000 talmidim of Rabbi Akiva were ni ar “מפסח ועד עצרת”. It is for this reason that K’lal Yisrael is נוהג to observe certain דיני אבילות during this period. The ג“סימן תצ ,says in Shulchan Aruch בית יוסף , that all the talmidim were ni ar before Lag B’Omer and on Lag B’Omer the dying stopped. He explains that עד עצרת is not literal, but really means two weeks before Shavuos, which is Lag B’Omer. The א“רמ writes that on Lag B’Omer the minhag is to show simcha. The פרי חדש asks, What is the point“ ;”מה טיבה של שמחה זו?“of the simcha”? If it’s because they stopped dying, there was no one le ! He answers that the simcha was that he established a new yeshiva and started with 5 talmidim. They were: ,רבי מאיר, רבי יהודה רבי שמעון בר יוחאי,
רבי יוסי & רבי אלעזר בן שמוע. These five talmidim were the key to the con nuity of Torah being taught to future genera ons. Imagine how Rabbi Akiva felt: Before Pesach, he had 24,000 great talmi-dim registered in his yeshiva. Then the levayas started taking place, one a er another, many on each given day. He felt responsible for the yeshiva that had to close due to literally empty classes. Furthermore, chazal say that the talmidim, as great as they were, had a slight weakness. They all got hundreds on their tests, they did their homework without promp ng and then some. They were great talmidim, indeed. It says in chazal that they died
ב) “מפני שלא נהגו כבוד זה בזה (יבמות סMind you, their lack of kavod must have been very subtle or Rabbi Akiva would surely have acted upon it. It’s possible that they treated each others as peers, rather
than as gedolim. Some mes we forget that the people we are very close to need to be given the proper respect, especially when the person si ng next to you or behind you is a great person in his own right. In yeshivos, it hap-pens that talmidim forget to stand up for older people, rebbeim, morahs and teach-ers, possibly because they may feel very comfortable in their presence. Just because we feel very close to our parents, we are not patur (exempt) from standing up for them when they enter the house. My children stand up for me when I come home. I have always been uncomfort-able with this. However, I realize that it is a big zechus for them to do it, so I let them, as uncomfortable as I am when they do. On Lag B’Omer, Rabbi Akiva started from scratch with his five new talmidim. From a psychological perspec ve, he could have thrown in the towel (so to speak). He could have decided that מן השמים, it wasn’t des ned for him to carry the beau ful torch of the mesorah to the next genera on. Had he given up, who knows what the rest of Jewish history might look like! Rabbi Akiva didn't think in those terms and instead said
“ תורה, מה תהא עליה?” ; “What will be with the Torah?” He gathered his five talmidim and taught them Torah,
“ ומשם יצאה תורה לישראל עד היום הזה! ” In addi on, in this zechus, he was zocheh to have a talmid such as the great רבי שמעון
בר יוחאי Who is greater than the great רבי We therefore celebrate Lag B’Omer !שמעוןby ligh ng torches represen ng the new light of Torah and קבלה. It is also the yahrzeit of the א“רמ , thereby a me to appreciate (תורת הנסתר קבלה)& תורת הנגלה. Have a wonderful Shabbos, Rabbi Berel Leiner Menahel

Avraham Rhein, one of the third grade boys
who received his Mishnayos at the
Haschalos Mishnayos Breakfast
The last few weeks have been filled with celebra ons and commemora ons. Parents and grandparents joined in a breakfast celebra on in honor of the third grade boys star ng mishnayos. Words of Torah were presented by Rabbi Leiner and Rabbi Yitzchak Cohen, Rosh Yeshivah at Y.U. The boys performed a presenta on about the
mesorah and their pictures now proudly hang in the hallway. The event culminated with the presenta on of the boys mishnayos to them and parents singing and davening
together for the success of our children learning Torah Sheba’al Peh.
Rosh Chodesh Iyar was marked with an Erev Shabbos Ruach for the younger grades and the introduc on of our upcoming Brachos Bee, which is always an exci ng event at YBH.
Yom Hazikaron was commemorated with a learning program and reci ng of
Kaddish in the zechus of fallen soldiers. The sounds of Torah learning resonated through-out the building and Morah Shoshanah Meyersdorf (Pre1A) shared a moving
presenta on about the daily mesiras nefesh of our chayalim.
Yom Ha’atzmaut was celebrated with a visit by Rabbi Deutsch of the Living Torah Museum, who brought ar facts from Eretz Yisrael and engaged the boys in a lively
ques on and answer exchange that tested their extensive knowledge of Torah. The boys all enjoyed delicious falafel lunches in honor of Yom Ha’atzmaut.
Thank you to our amazing PTA, who sponsored the lunches and the Living Torah experience, for bringing exci ng and innova ve programs to our children.
3B HASCHALAS MISHNAYOS PROGRAM
A Peek Into Our Week: Mrs. Ebstein’s Second Grade Class: Our class is busy with hands-on learning. As a culminating Social Studies project for our economics unit, the boys are creating their own goods or services to sell to their peers on Market Day. They are also earning money for good behavior so they can have the chance to be consumers as well. In Science, we learned about habitats and food chains and are excited to begin working in groups to research and create models of various habitats. Please stop by our bulletin board to see our wonderful simile writings displayed. Rabbi Goldberg’s Kitah Alef: We recently celebrated comple ng parshas Bereishis with a siyum (see photo below). We are now on to Parshas Noach where students have been recognizing many of the prefixes and words from previous pesukim and remembering their meaning. We are also learning to read the tefilos of Shema and Vehaya Im Shamoa in Kriah while learning Klalei Ha-Kriah. The boys of Kitah Alef have made such great progress this year! Mrs. Pollack’s Middle School Language Arts Classes: As we move into the last weeks of school, the Language Arts classes remain busy. In seventh grade we just completed the novel A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park and have started a new novel this week, The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis. The Breadwinner is an engaging novel about a young girl and her family struggling under the harsh Taliban rule. We will con-
nue to focus on plot, character, theme, figura ve language and vocabulary. Students will engage in a variety of wri ng prompts to help them fully explore the novel and con nue to improve their cri cal thinking and wri en expression. In eighth grade we just completed the play version of Diary of Anne Frank. We acted it out in class and it was a great success! To keep our eighth graders engaged and focused as they move toward gradua on we have started our last unit on poetry and nonfic on literature. We are mostly exploring American poetry and history through these mediums. The students will learn to deconstruct and analyze these signifi-cant works by great American authors. Of course, they will be wri ng about them as well.
Middle School Enrichment Program: First aid, drone flying, 3D prin ng and electronics are just some of the exci ng enrichment classes enjoyed by middle school students. We will feature our enrichment program details in next week’s newsle er.
Mazel Tov to Rabbi Freeman's Kitah Daled upon their comple on of Mesechtos Berachos. A siyum is being planned to celebrate this special milestone. The boys learned many halachos connected to brachos and they are familiar with the different zemanim of the day. They learned about z’man Krias Shemah and tefillah and many halachos connected to Shemona Esrei. We also learned all about brachos on food and many dinim of bentching and mezemun. We are now working on reviewing hilchos brachos and preparing for the Brachos Bee. We are so proud of the boys who have learned so well throughout the year as they have developed into Mishna learners. Rabbi Finkel’s Kitah Hay: As we near the end of the year, we envision our goal of finishing Sefer Shemos as easily a ainable. When we fin-ished Parshas Tetzaveh before Pesach, the class broke into spontaneous dancing at reaching that milestone (see photo below). We are already halfway thru Parshas Ki Sisa as we near the end of Sefer Shemos. In Gemara, we have almost finished all the Gemara on the first Mishna of Eilu Metzios. In Navi, we are delving into perek 25 in Shmuel I and under-standing the roles of David and Avigail. We are all becoming experts in hilchos Brachos as we prepare for the Brachos Bee next week.
