Term 4 - Week 7 Thursday 24 November 2016

Dear Parents and Carers,

2017 Class Placements and Structure

One of the first tasks we do is to divide up the anticipated 900 students across K-6 Years into manageable classes.

To do this accurately, so that classes do not need to be restructured in Week 2 next year, we need to know about anyone who may not have enrolled their children to begin Kindergarten and anyone who is leaving for another school or moving overseas to live. Please contact the school office by phone (9587 3717) or through an email to [email protected] or complete a form at the office to advise us of any of these situations.

Many factors are considered when grouping children into classes for the next school year and it is never an easy task to get it right for every child. Besides the Department’s guidelines about the numbers in each class at different year levels we also consider:

• academic achievement levels

• special needs consideration ( Gifted and Talented, requiring Support Teacher Assistance, special needs assistance)

• EAL/D phase (how many years a student has been learning English)

• relationships that should be split or continued

• behavioural issues or concerns

• any concerning family issues

• students receiving funding support

• current referrals to the Learning Support Team

• numbers of boys and girls in classes

In circumstances where parents have particular concerns or issues about the placement of their child for the next school year that involve any of the factors above or any other reason, then now is the time inform the school by writing a note. Coming to discuss these issues and a child’s placement in the first weeks of next year is too late. We always undertake to do the very best we can by every student and we require your support to be able to do this.

During the final two staff development days we will have a temporary class structure developed but as always we will need to review it in the early weeks of the new term when all enrolment information is finalised. Please do not ask staff members for 2017 class placement information. In order to be fair and equitable to all of our parents we will announce the classes when we are confident with our final enrolment numbers in 2017.

Please note that I will not be honouring any requests from parents re specific teachers for 2017.

Anticipated enrolments

In the next few weeks I will need to submit a revision of our anticipated enrolments for 2017. The accuracy of this information is vital as it affects our staffing entitlements and resource funding by the Department. At present our projected enrolments for 2017 indicate that we will maintain our current class structure of 34 classes. However, if we gain a few more students we may grow to 35 classes. Conversely, if we lose children we may revert to 33 classes. It is very important that you inform the school if you are not expecting your children to return to Carlton PS in 2017. Many thanks for your support with this important information.

Selection Panel Training

In late November a selection panel comprising of Mrs Mateski (convenor), Mr Garth Sperring (P&C rep), Mrs Sharon Lin (Community Rep) & Mrs Jillian Murchie (Staff Rep) will appoint a classroom teacher to commence in 2017. We have a few parents that have formal Selection Panel Training but we need more parents trained in Selection Panel Training to assist us in positions that arise in 2017. Selection Panel Training is now available online. The online training takes approximately 1.5 hours and once completed a certificate can be printed off.

Christmas Giving Tree and Food Collection

It is tradition at our school to have a special Christmas Tree in the school office foyer. The reason our tree is “SPECIAL”, is because we put presents under the tree and ask the Salvation Army to collect them and distribute the gifts to the families who may not be able to have the Christmas they would like, because of their financial and family situations.

We ask that all children look at home for toys they no longer play with-which are still in very good condition. Perhaps they could buy a new toy with their pocket money for these needy children.

The gift should be wrapped in Christmas paper and labelled "boy" or "girl" and the age of the child it would be suitable for.

We are also asking for donations of tinned and non-perishable food, to be passed onto the Salvation Army who will also distribute these to families who have limited food in their houses over the Christmas period. Please check the date on the food before you bring it to school.

Every child who brings in a gift present or tinned food product will be given a star with their name on it, and this will be placed on the tree. The collection will close on Wednesday, 14 December, 2016, and the children will be able to keep their own stars.

Thank you in advance for your generosity, Mrs. Z. Mihajlova

please contact the P&C by email at: [email protected]

CHANGE TO P&C MEETING SCHEDULE FOR NEXT YEAR In the last P&C meeting it was suggested that we change the P&C meeting schedule FROM the second Tuesday of each month TO the TUESDAY in the 3

Attention Mums, Dads, Grandmas, Grandpas and other friends of Carlton Public School

Carlton Kids Mentors For the last 2 years Carlton Public School has been involved in a Mentoring program with KidsHope, an organisation run by

World Vision. As this has been a fantastic success, the staff at Carlton Public School have decided to run this program

independently. This means that we are looking for caring and supportive adults who would be keen to give up one hour a week

to spend time with a student who would benefit from their advice, fun and friendship.

Each volunteer is matched with a student who they would work with once a week for one hour. Students and their mentors have

done many different activities such as reading books in the library, playing basketball in the playground, cooking or just drawing.

The benefit to the student is a valuable supportive friend who they can rely upon to be there for them each week. The volunteer

feels great because they are spending quality time with a great little person and having fun while making an important difference

to the student’s self-esteem and confidence.

All training will be provided to our volunteers and staff will be available to help with activity ideas, communication and advice.

All we need is for you to say “Yes” and come along!

There are many Mentors in our current Carlton Public School community who can share their experiences with you and guide

you in the decision to become a mentor.

For further information please email Carlton Public School to the attention of Miss Morrison [email protected]

or by calling 9587-3717. Training will be arranged before we finish up for the year so I look forward to hearing from you as soon

as possible.

The Working With Children Check (WWCC) is a requirement for anyone who works or volunteers in child-related work in NSW. It

involves a National Police Check (criminal history record check) and a review of reportable workplace misconduct. As a volunteer

your WWCC is obtained without needing to pay a fee at Services NSW.

Please consider this very worthy activity as it really does make a difference,

Jenny Morrison- Carlton Kids Coordinator
