Carlton Speak 2019 Carlton Public School E-Bulletin
Term 1 - Week 5 Friday 1 March 2019
Dear Parents and Carers Parent Teacher Information Evenings Thank you for taking the time to visit the school this week for the Parent & Teacher Information sessions. The level of participation in most classes was very high and this is a great indicator of the level of support you provide for your children, the teachers and the school overall.
School Resource Costs A note was sent out last week outlining school resource costs. These include Mathletics, Reading Eggs, school contributions etc. Please try to pay these resource costs as soon as possible as the school is committed to several large expenditure items in 2019. These include: • Replacing old & uneconomical air conditioners in Bocks A & B. Approximately $70,000 • Purchasing more i-pads, laptops, desktops - $50000 • Building a large COLA in Area 2- $250,000 • Installing a synthetic games court under and around the new COLA in Area 2. $100,000 • Installing a synthetic games court adjacent to Area 1 & Block D- $14,000 (Supported by the P&C) Please note that all of the above expenditure items are items we need to save for as a school community. We receive operational funding but that does not cover the cost of these projects. We are not in a financial position to address these matters immediately so with the help of the P&C we will start prioritising the projects. Please assist by paying the school resource costs. I am aware that some families are feeling financial pressure. If you need to organise a payment plan please come and discuss the issue with Ms Rasmussen (Deputy Principal). Many thanks for your support. Strategic Directions One of our Strategic Directions for the 2018-2020 School Plan is Transformational Learning. High in priority are “Creativity, Critical Reflection, Communication and Collaboration” (4C’s)
In our goal to be a Future Focused School, we will continue to access the expertise of Miranda & Michael Jefferson. (world renowned educational researchers). Miranda has commenced another intensive period of professional learning for a leadership group of staff in the 4C’s. Additionally, she has organised a team of university professors to deliver 4C training to all staff at CPS and the Community of Schools we share our learning. This year the Community of Schools has expanded to include Carlton PS, Hurstville PS, Hurstville South PS, Mortdale PS and Connells Point PS. This is an amazing collection of high quality teachers who are keen to share their skills and resources.
With Miranda’s training, we will deepen the knowledge of all of our staff to prepare the students with the necessary future focused learning skills. This will not be based on one program or activity but many programs including inquiry based learning, project based learning, STEM, robotics etc. To date, the training has been thought provoking, challenging, fun and reflective. As we improve our own learning in the 4C’s we will offer workshops for interested parents to be involved in the learning. These workshops will be offered at the end of Term 2 and early Term 3. Helping Hands Helping Hands have recently been provided with DEC authority to increase Before & After School Care enrolments. We are organising a room in Block A to accommodate the extra children. The room will be upgraded with kitchen facilities to accommodate the needs of the children. The extra room should be operational by the beginning of Term 2. This will assist families that are on waiting lists for afternoon care. Fortnightly Newsletter (Odd Weeks) The weekly newsletter has proven to be a very time consuming product often taking all day to prepare and produce for Ms Morrison (DP). I discussed this concern in our recent P&C meeting and it was agreed that a fortnightly edition would be sent out. This is common practice across schools in our region. However, each week we will still publish student award winners through the school app and website.
Regards Stephen Vrachas Principal

CPS LIBRARY NEWS
In 2019 we will be encouraging CPS students to participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. We will allocate
times during our Library lessons to help students log on and record their PRC books. Congratulations to the 306
amazing CPS readers who completed the 2018 Premier's Reading Challenge last year.
Our School Library is a great supporter of the Premier’s Reading Challenge. The Library has a specialised Premier’s
Reading Challenge location which houses many PRC booklist titles and is constantly being updated. Also students
can use the Library computers during lessons and at lunchtimes to browse PRC lists and books available through
our library system OLIVER and their ORBIT accounts. Students will be provided with further information during
their class Library lessons.

Happy New Year! Chinese New Year celebrations have just finished on
the 19th of February. Part of the new year celebrations include putting
up decorations, eating dumplings, watching fireworks and giving red
envelopes.
Year 5 and 6 students were given an opportunity to make delicious fried
dumplings at the end of last year. They did research on what ingredients
were in a dumpling and how to make them. They wrote a recipe before
the cooking lesson and completed their reflection sheet after the
lesson. Most students enjoyed this cooking experience.
The topic this term for Kindergarten is Me; Stage 1 (Year 1 and 2) My Family; Stage 2 (Year 3 and 4) Family
and Friends and Stage 3 (Year 5 and 6) Family and Occupations. Students across the stages have done their
title pages and below are some examples.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents who support their children in learning
Chinese. Your continuous support is very important, and it does have an impact on your children’s learning.
I am looking forward to meeting you, our new Kindergarten parents, at the Parent Information Morning.
– Ms Yin

Arabic News Welcome to a new year of teaching languages. The Kindergarten topic is "All about me", the topic for Stages one,
two and three is "Family". Students in all stages are learning the names of members of family, colours, numbers
and adjectives. The focus in Kindergarten is on introducing themselves. Stage one are describing self and family
members. Stage two are describing self and a friend. Stage Three are learning about family members and their
occupations.
In the Arabic class we encourage students to communicate by practising learnt expressions . We read and discuss
books to give students cultural experience. Examples of books are:
"Colours Around Us" "The Small Journalist" "Let's Work" "But Mum Everyone Does This"
"حولنا ألوان ااصغيرة الصحفية" " نعمل هيا" "ذلك يفعل الكل امي يا ولكن" " "
" Dad and the Internet" "Respecting the Elders" "I know my colours" "My Grandma loses the Dream"
" االنترنت و ابي" " الكبير احترام " " ألواني أعرف" "الحلم تفقد جدتي"
Activities include: Reading and discussing stories, singing, using Bus-stop, Donut, Pass the Clap, Bingo, Chinese
Whispers and Educational Games. Also, tracing, copying and writing.
Dear Parents, as teaching children starts from home you are advised to expose children to Arabic by using the
language to communicate and to read and discuss Arabic stories with children . Also to set an example for your
children by letting them see you reading for different purposes. Doing this will improve their language and will give
them self confidence.
