PARK PAVILIONCar [+] Pedestrian Shared SpaceBoston, MA

This comprehensive design studio was based on the typological study of parking garages as monuments and as a civic podium. The selected site supported a variety of programs and activities, as the aerial view showcased vastly different reactions to the public plaza on a weekly basis: markets and parking spaces. The end result was the integration of garage and five shared space pods, which serve the needs of both the cars and visitors to the Harrison Avenue area.

MID-MANHATTAN EXPANSIONNew York Public Library Office TowerNew York, NY

The focus of this studio was the exploration of the skyscraper and office tower typology and designing a twenty-story office tower in Midtown Manhattan. The proposed site of this project included a pre-existing six-story branch of the New York Public Library to be absorbed and integrated in the design scheme. The formal rationale of the project was to create regulated variety by proposing four different floor plates in order to create isolated terrace conditions and increase the number of corner offices for the occupants.

ALT-81Urban Intervention For Interstate 81Syracuse, NY

This semester group analysis focused on the future of the I-81 viaduct, which will reach the end of its useful life in the year 2017. The proposed design solution was to rebuild the viaduct up to the design standards and insert new commercial developments, including commercial storefronts, restaurants, spec office space, and a hotel with a casino serving as the primary attractor for the visitors to the area.

SYRACUSE FILM INSTITUTEReconfiguring Columbus CircleSyracuse, NY

The focus of this project was to design a Film Institute and Theater space, while engaging the adjacent public plaza adjacent to the site. The primary design gesture was to construct the Institute itself as a monolithic seventy foot box as the secondary programs “crashed” into the form disrupting the geometry, specifically the office spaces, classrooms, and the theater. The theater is suspended above the ground plane and creates an additional gathering space in order to strengthen the connection to Columbus Circle.

UNIVER[CITY]An Urban Campus Within A Historic FabricFlorence, Italy

This Florence based design studio was focused on the idea of the urban fabric and how to negotiate the introduction of the private university campus within a historic city. The primary design challenge were the juxtaposing concepts of campus and city, private and public, which led to a surgical insertion of “strands of space” to emphasize movement of students, tourist, and Florentines alike.

STUDY ABROAD HAND DRAWINGSurvey Of Italian Architecture | Analytical And ObservationalFlorence, Italy

A series of on-site, freehand, and analytical drawings collected over the course of four months, eight cities, and two sketchbooks. This intensive study of various historic places of Architecture throughout Italy began with several weeks of ‘Florence Walks’ and culminated in a four day trip to Rome at the end of the Fall semester.

FACADE/PLAN COMPARISON BETWEEN DIFFERING LOGGIA CONDITIONS

Built in 1851, the Uffizi was commissioned by the Medici and designed by the architect Giorgio Vasari. The location of the site and its surrounding context was of particular impor-tance in the design of both the building as well as the façade conditions. The Uffizi was intended to function for multiple purposes. It served the programmatic requirement of the offices and as a link between the Arno River, Palazzo Vecchio, and Piazza della Signoria. In order to mediate this moment of transition and connection there are two key conditions of privileged surfaces. These two facades simul-taneously function as a component within one cohesive fabric and as well as an independent unit. In this analysis it was critical to extract and compare the formal qualities of the singular bay condition as well as the Arno River front loggia condition. The procession from the Arno into the Piazza degli Uffizi was key in this study because of how the facades mediate space and transition, and marks the change from the river side to the loggia to corridor and public space. Even within the public space the Uffizi creates, it successfully links to the next experience in the city due to the unity created by the repetitive language of the façade.

FACADE ANALYSISFacade As Idea| Analytical StudiesFlorence, Italy

An analytical study of the multiple facades of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, and an observation of how the typical design of the bay unit differs from the primary facade along the Arno River. The study included both a line drawing, shadow study, and series of diagrams to draw these comparisons.
