The last three months have seen progresson a large number of small projects. Thegreen opposite the village hall has had itsmake-over with new benches and a newinformation plaque laser-printed ontoaluminium and mounted on the wallwhere it can actually be seen. The oldbenches will be re-used up at the SportsGround.

We have selected a preferred supplierfor a zipwire at the Fishponds play areaand we now have to work with thesupplier and Historic England to ensure itis installed without damaging anyartefacts which may be buried there.

We had a rather bruising encounterwith Historic England when we met toconsider a beacon in Castle Field initiallyfor the centenary of the end of the FirstWorld War (beacons are being lit acrossthe country) but also because thereseems to be a national celebration of onesort or another every few years and apermanent beacon seemed like a goodfocal point and use of the castle mound. Itwas also near to the Village Hall if weretired there for refreshmentsafterwards.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t acceptable toHistoric England who wanted us to put itin the top corner near Lodge Farm Court –

The latest news fromhardly a safe walk at night to the VillageHall. So, no permanent beacon but we willlook at alternatives. We will have a “SilentSoldier” silhouette in the village to showour respect at the centenary inNovember.

We have a little more work to do onadditional equipment for the ThruppClose / Bullington End play area and theexercise equipment for the Sports Groundbut hopefully will select this at our JuneParish Council meeting.

Additional Smartwater kits werepurchased by the Parish Council andoffered to residents at vastly reducedprices (£5 instead of the normal retailprice of £60). Those who ordered kitsshould have them shortly. There are somespares as we had to order a minimumquantity so contact the Clerk if you wantone. Please remain vigilant – I see therewas a burglary recently in Hanslope.

There were significant problems withour supplier who emptied the dog wastebins and also did an extra empty of thelitter bins. We have switched to a newsupplier on the dog bins and are arrangingfor a new service on the litter bins.

The Parish Council has expressedinterest in taking over the landscapingcontract from Milton Keynes Council.

The level of service hasreduced over the pastyears due to budgetcuts. We would get agrant from MKCequivalent to the newreduced level of servicebut we would have tomake up the differencefor any improvementswe want. This is adecision for later thisyear.

I would like to thank the bus users whocompleted the survey which showed that75% favour an hourly service fromCentral Milton Keynes to Roade ratherthan a two-hourly service toNorthampton. It is still possible NorthantsCounty Council will find some money tomaintain the current service but we havereported our bus users’ views to MKC.The current service will continue in anycase until July.

There has been a setback in the statusof Neighbourhood Plans where a PlanningAuthority (in our case MKC) doesn’t haveenough land designated for housing tomeet the demand over the next five yearswhich MKC doesn’t.

In these cases, various policies whichrestrict development are set aside, whichis why Hanslope has had 312 housesapproved against the wishes of its ParishCouncil with another 259 in the pipeline.By comparison, Castlethorpe has just 470existing houses so Hanslope may beexpanded by more than the size ofCastlethorpe against the wishes of itsresidents and council.

Castlethorpe has an exemption becausewe have a Neighbourhood Plan but wehave recently been told that thisexemption will only be for two years fromthe referendum date. This means we willhave to re-make our Neighbourhood Planand allocate additional land for housing, though not necessarily very many.Hopefully, this will be a much morestreamlined process compared to our lastPlan and we would expect to starttowards the end of the year unless thelegislation changes.

I am sure you have all been bombardedwith emails and letters about the newdata protection regulation, GDPR. You willno doubt be pleased that the Parish

the Parish Council

Council has spent considerable effort andwill have to commit ongoing expense toensure we are compliant. Councillors willhave to move to new dedicated emailaddresses and we have a Data ProtectionPolicy, which you can read on the ParishCouncil page of the village website,www.castlethorpevillage.org.uk. All ofwhich will, I am sure, make no practicaldifference to any resident other than thatthe costs come out of our precept.

There remains a vacancy on the parishcouncil. If anyone would like to beconsidered, please let the Clerk or anycouncillor know and your co-option willbe considered. Although formally there'sjust one meeting a month, councillors dohave to do a number of things betweenmeetings such as organising the bussurvey, chasing MKC, meeting suppliers, going on reference visits, liaising onlandscaping and with organisations suchas Historic England.

Finally, can I congratulate AndrewGeary on his re-election. Andrew hasbeen - and I am sure will continue to be -an excellent Ward Councillor, especiallyin his support of the villagesand I lookforward to continuing to work with him.

Village recyclingis going wellCastlethorpe is one of 24 parish and towncouncils signed up to Milton KeynesCouncil’s Get Sorted MK! initiative toincrease the city’s recycling and reducecontamination of the recycling sacks.

So far the results have been veryencouraging, with 54% of all rubbish beingrecycled and the figure going up, butthere have been problems with cardboardnot being put into the sacks and being leftbehind by the binmen.

Wet cardboard can clog up themachinery at the recycling centre, leadingto long delays while it’s cleared, which iswhy it has to be kept out of the rain in thesacks.

You can find more details of what can –and can’t – be recycled on the Get Sortedwebsite at www.getsortedmk.co.uk

Pull together to beBest Kept Village!

Castlethorpe stands a great chance of being namedBuckinghamshire’s Best Kept Village this year – as long aseveryone joins in to help.

We were runners-up in our group in 2015 and 2017 toperennial winners Cuddington and last year won theDashwood Trophy for the best runner-up in allcategories. And this year, under the rules of the BestKept Village competition, Cuddington can’t enter.

So that means it’s down to us to make sure that 2018 isthe year we lift the coveted Morris Cup for the categoryof villages with a population between 500 and 1,000.

Last year a big sweep-up and litter pick of the entirevillage was organised over two Saturdays in May butonly seven people turned up to help – and two ofthose were parish councillors! So this year we wanteveryone to do their bit. And it shouldn’t take toomuch of your time.

We’re asking everyone to make sure that theroad and pavement in front of their home is kepttidy by giving it a good sweep now and again andpicking up any litter and cigarette butts you find, preferably daily.

If you have a neighbour who’s old or infirm, whynot tidy up in front of their home as well whileyou’re doing yours.

We’d also like you to pick up any litter you findwalking around the village and put it in one of thelitter bins. And if you see a litter bin or a dog binthat’s getting full please alert one of the parishcouncillors – their contact details are on Page 5.

And parents, please tell your children not to dropsweet wrappers and crisp bags in the street but tobring them home, as there’s been a lot of thatrecently, especially near the shop.

Castlethorpe is a great place to live and it reallydeserves to be recognised as such. So if everyonepulls together, we’ll lift that trophy!
