“Now Simon’s Mother-in-Law had gone to bed with a fever…”

Mark 1:30

The Fifth Sunday

in Ordinary Time

Online Mass

Sexagesima Sunday

Celebrant & Preacher:

Fr Gary Ecclestone SSC

Welcome to today’s livestreamed Sunday Parish Mass

Thine arm, O Lord, in days of oldWas strong to heal and save;It triumphed o'er disease and death,O'er darkness and the grave;To thee they went, the blind, the dumb,The palsied and the lame,The leper with his tainted life,The sick with fevered frame.

And lo! thy touch brought life and health,Gave speech, and strength, and sight;And youth renewed and frenzy calmedOwned thee the Lord of light;And now, O Lord, be near to bless,Almighty as of yore,In crowded street, by restless couch,As by Genne-sareth's shore.

Be thou our great deliverer still,Thou Lord of life and death;Restore and quicken, soothe and blessWith thine almighty breath;To hands that work, and eyes that see,Give wisdom's heavenly lore,That whole and sick, and weak and strong,May praise thee evermore.

Words: E.H. Plumptre (1821-February 1st 1891)

In the name of the Father and of the Son

and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen

The Lord be with you

And also with you

The Priest welcomes everyone to the service.

PRAYERS OF PENITENCE AND FORGIVENESS

In a moment of quiet we prepare ourselves to meet Christ in word and sacrament.

Silence is kept for personal reflection.

God the Father forgives us in Christ and heals us by the Holy Spirit.

Let us therefore put away all anger and bitterness, all slander and malice,

and confess our sins to God our redeemer.

O Father, you come to meet us when we return to you:

Lord, have mercy.Lord, have mercy.

O Lord Jesus, you died on the cross for our sins:

Christ, have mercy.Christ, have mercy.

O Holy Spirit, you give us life and peace:

Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

May Almighty God have mercy upon you, forgive you your sins,

and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

All stand to say the Gloria

Glory to God in the highest,and peace to his people on earth.Lord God, heavenly King,almighty God and Father,we worship you, we give you thanks,we praise you for your glory.Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,Lord God, Lamb of God,you take away the sin of the world:have mercy on us;you are seated at the right hand of the Father:receive our prayer.For you alone are the Holy One,you alone are the Lord,you alone are the Most High,Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

All remain standing

THE COLLECT

Let us pray

A moment for silent reflection is kept

Keep your family safe, O Lord, with unfailing care,

that, relying solely on the hope of heavenly grace,

they may be defended always by your protection.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark (Mark 1:29-39)

Glory to you, O Lord.

This is the Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, O Christ

THE SERMON

After which a period of silence is kept

THE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father;

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation

he came down from heaven,

by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son

is worshipped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism

for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen

THE PRAYERS Kneel or sit

These words may be used:

Lord in your mercy hear our prayer

or

Lord, hear usLord, graciously hear us.

or

Rest eternal grant unto them O Lord

and let light perpetual shine upon them

Let us join our prayers with those of Our Lady,

Mother of the Word made flesh,

as we greet her and say:

Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee,

blessed art thou amongst women

and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,

now and at the hour of our death.

Merciful Father, Accept these prayers for the sake of your son,

our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

THE PEACE

Christ is our peace,

he has reconciled us to God in one body by the Cross,

we meet in His name and share His peace.

The peace of the Lord be always with you.

And also with you.

We offer those around us a socially distanced sign of peace.

THE MINISTRY OF THE SACRAMENT

O WORSHIP the King all glorious above;O gratefully sing his power and his love:Our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of days,Pavilioned in splendour, and girded with praise.

O tell of his might, O sing of his grace,Whose robe is the light, whose canopy space.His chariots of wrath the deep thunder-clouds form,And dark is his path on the wings of the storm.

This earth, with its store of wonders untold,Almighty, thy power hath founded of old:Hath stablished it fast by a changeless decree,And round it hath cast, like a mantle, the sea.

Thy bountiful care what tongue can recite?It breathes in the air, it shines in the light;It streams from the hills, it descends to the plain,And sweetly distils in the dew and the rain.

Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail,In thee do we trust, nor find thee to fail;Thy mercies how tender! how firm to the end!Our Maker, Defender, redeemer, and Friend.

O measureless Might, ineffable Love,While angels delight to hymn thee above,Thy humbler creation, though feeble their lays,With true adoration shall sing to thy praise.

Words: Robert Grant (1779-1838)

Pray my brothers and sisters

that my sacrifice and yours

may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father.

May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands,

for the praise and glory of his name, for our good,

and the good of all His Church.

O Lord, our God,

who once established these created things

to sustain us in our frailty,

grant, we pray,

that they may become for us now the Sacrament of eternal life.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

The Lord be with youAnd also with you

Lift up your heartsWe lift them to the Lord

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God

It is right to give him thanks and praise

All kneel or sit

Father, we give you thanks and praise

through your beloved Son Jesus Christ, your living Word,

through whom you have created all things;

who was sent by you in your great goodness to be our Saviour.

By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh;

as your Son, born of the blessed Virgin,

he lived on earth and went about among us;

he opened wide his arms for us on the cross;

he put an end to death by dying for us;

and revealed the resurrection by rising to new life;

so he fulfilled your will and won for you a holy people.

Therefore with angels and archangels,

and with all the company of heaven,

we proclaim your great and glorious name,

for ever praising you and saying:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness;

grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit,

and according to your holy will,

these gifts of bread and wine

may become the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ;

who in the same night that he was betrayed,

took bread and gave you thanks;

he broke it

and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take, eat;

this is my body

which is given for you;

do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper

he took the cup

and gave you thanks;

he gave it to them, saying:

Drink this, all of you;

is my blood of the new covenant,

which is shed for you and for many

for the forgiveness of sins.

Do this,

as often as you drink it,

in remembrance of me.

Great is the mystery of faith

Christ has died, Christ is risen,

Christ will come again.

And so, Father,

calling to mind his death on the cross,

his perfect sacrifice made once

for the sins of the whole world;

rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension,

and looking for his coming in glory,

we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.

As we bring before you this bread and this cup,

we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving

and we thank you for counting us worthy

to stand in your presence and serve you.

Lord, may this sacrifice,

which has made our peace with you,

advance the peace and salvation of all the world.

Strengthen in faith your pilgrim Church on earth;

your servant Jonathan our bishop, and all the bishops.

Welcome into your kingdom our departed brothers and sisters,

and all who have left this world in your friendship.

Send the Holy Spirit on your people

and gather into one in your kingdom

all who share this one bread and one cup,

so that we, in the company of Holy Mary, Mother of God,

of James, Simon & Jude, and all the saints,

may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord;

by whom, and with whom, and in whom,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father,

for ever and ever. Amen.

As our Saviour Christ commanded and taught, together we pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed by thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for for ever and ever. Amen.

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ

though we are many we are one body,

because we all share in one bread.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,

have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,

have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,

grant us peace.

THE INVITATION

Behold the Lamb of God,

behold Him who takes away the sins of the world.

Blessed are those who are called to his supper.

Lord, I am not worthy to receive you,

but only say the word and I shall be healed.

The Body of Christ

Amen!

The Blood of Christ

Amen!

Let them thank the Lord for his mercy,

his wonders for the children of men,

for he satisfies the thirsty soul

and the hungry he fills with good things.

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION FOR THOSE AT HOME

Spiritual Communion is a Christian practice of desiring union with Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. It is used as a preparation for Mass and by individuals who cannot receive Holy Communion.

Say the following prayerfully and quietly before saying the Prayer for Spiritual Communion:

Jesus my Lord, I thee adore, O make me love thee more and more.

Come to my heart Lord Jesus, there is room in my heart for thee.

A deep silence is kept

Communion Hymn

Sweet Sacrament divine,Hid in thine earthly home,Lo, round thy lowly shrine,With suppliant hearts we come;Jesu, to thee our voice we raiseIn songs of love and heartfelt praise:Sweet Sacrament divine.

Sweet Sacrament of peace,Dear home for every heart,Where restless yearnings ceaseAnd sorrows all depart;There in thine ear all trustfullyWe tell our tale of misery:Sweet Sacrament of peace.

Sweet Sacrament of rest,Ark from the ocean's roar,Within thy shelter blestSoon may we reach the shore;Save us, for still the tempest raves,Save, lest we sink beneath the waves:Sweet Sacrament of rest.

Sweet Sacrament divine,Earth's light and jubilee,In thy far depths doth shineThy Godhead's majesty;Sweet light, so shine on us, we prayThat earthly joys may fade away:Sweet Sacrament divine.

Words: Francis Stanfield (1835-1914)

A deep silence is kept

O God, who have willed that we be partakers

in the one Bread and the one Chalice,

grant us, we pray, so to live that, made one in Christ,

we may joyfully bear fruit for the salvation of the world.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us

with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ.

Through him we offer you our souls and bodies

to be a living sacrifice.

Send us out in the power of you Spirit

to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.

Please stand

BLESSING AND DISMISSAL

The Lord be with you

And also with you

Christ the good shepherd, who laid down his life for the sheep,

draw you and all who hear his voice

to be one flock within one fold;

And the blessing of God Almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be upon you and remain with you always.

Amen.

Go in the peace of Christ.

Thanks be to God.

HYMN

Immortal, invisible, God only wise,In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,Most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,Almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;Thy justice, like mountains high soaring aboveThy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.

To all life thou givest--to both great and small;In all life thou livest, the true life of all;We blossom and flourish like leaves on the tree,Then wither and perish--but naught changeth thee.

Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,Thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;All praise we would render; O help us to see'Tis only the splendour of light hideth thee.

Words: Walter C. Smith (1824-1908)

The Angelus

A Prayer in Thanksgiving for the Incarnation

The Angel of the Lord brought tidings to Mary:

And she conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;

blessed art thou among women

and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,

now and at the hour of our death.

Behold the handmaid of the Lord: Be it unto me according to Thy word.

Hail Mary . . .

And the Word was made Flesh:

And dwelt among us.

Hail Mary . . .

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God,

that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray:

Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord,

Thy grace into our hearts;

that as we have known the Incarnation of thy Son Jesus Christ

by the message of an angel,

so by His Cross and Passion

may we be brought unto the glory of His Resurrection,

through the same Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.
