Social critics suggest that the grim hysteria of our secular New Year celebration stems from our need for distraction from the truth that another year has passed and we are a year older. That unpleasant truth of aging is often handled by humor. For example, the poster that reads:
You know you are getting older when… Everything hurts and what doesn’t hurt, doesn’t work! Your little black book contains names ending in “M.D.” You get winded playing chess. You sit in a rocking chair and can’t get it going. Your knees buckle and your belt won’t. Your back goes out more than you do.
For millions it is no joke. It is dangerous to associate aging with stereotypes of incompetence, boredom and irrelevance. When society expects people to act in a certain way, they tend to respond exactly in that way. Older people whose lives could be happy and full, may close themselves off from those possibilities, just because they have restricted ideas of themselves.
In Sefer Shemot, the book of Exodus which we begin this week we read: “And Moses was 80 years old, and Aaron 83, when they spoke to Pharaoh.” The question was raised as to the reason for the narrative to digress from all the high drama, confrontations and plagues, to mention the ages of Aaron and Moses?
Abraham Ibn Ezra, the 12th century scholar offers an answer: “In all of Scripture, we find no other prophets recorded as having prophesied in their old age, save these two, because their eminence is far above all the other prophets.” Ibn Ezra points out that Moses and Aaron supply the core of Jewish revelation; other prophets only remind us of their essential teachings. They were open to receiving and transmitting these revolutionary ideas at the ages of 80 and 83! No wonder that the Mishna in Pirke Avot declares: “Ben shmonim lig’vurah – 80 is the age of greatness!”
We Jews have our own technique for keeping young. It is the study of Torah which helps keep us always interested and always interesting. Rabbi Hanina at age 80 said: “Warm fragrant oils with which my parents anointed me when I was young have stood me in good stead in my old age.” He was referring to the regular practice of Jewish learning.
The author of Psalm 92 said it succinctly: “They shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Planted in the house of the Lord, they shall flourish…even in old age they will be fruitful, filled with vigor and strength.

overarching theme of L’kha Dodi: we’re welcoming in Shabbat, personified as a bride, which is also symbolic of the “marriage” between God and Israel. There is a second theme from “Mikdash Melekh” until before “Boi v’shalom:” In these middle stanzas, “the poem becomes a plea for the redemption of Jerusalem and the coming of the Messiah.” (Hammer, 21) I hope that this little d’var t’filah will heighten your appreciation for this beautiful poem

Here we are, at the beginning of a new year: A time to reflect on the past year, and to look ahead to the future – a time to refresh. Much in the same way that Shabbat is a weekly time to recharge spiritually, and reflect. So, at this time of the New Year, I think
it’s fitting to talk about one of my favorite parts of the Shabbat service: L’kha Dodi. I have liked L’kha Dodi since I was young. I was captivated by the melody even back then, and also by the poetry. Not that I understood Hebrew back then, but I was drawn in by the rhyme and meter, and the sense that this was the high point of Kabbalat Shabbat. Now that I’m familiar with it on a higher level, I would like to share some insights with you. In Or Hadash: A Commentary on Siddur Sim Shalom for Shabbat and Festivals, Reuven Hammer writes, “The imagery of this magnificent piyyut (liturgical poem) is based upon an ancient rabbinic interpretation of the biblical Song of Songs taught by Rabbi Akiva (ca. 100 C.E.). He believed that this book of love poetry described the love between God and Israel. The lover – dod – is God, the Holy One. The maiden, the fairest of women, is Israel.” (p. 21) This is the main

Todah Rabah to the Gift and Craft Show committee, volunteers, and especially the co-chairs, Marilyn Benjamin, Susie Berman, Susie Schwartz and Louisa Benjamin who did amazing job producing this year’s fantastic shopping extravaganza. It was a great
community event. Our annual Hanukka celebration was lots of fun – singing, lighting the menorah, eating latkes and donuts, decorating cookies for the community. Everyone who attended had a lot of fun. January doesn’t slow down too much as we look forward to Got Shabbat dinner, Sisterhood Shabbat and the JTS Seminary Outreach Series. We will be hosting the Tampa Bay Jewish Film Festival on Saturday evening, January 7. Check this bulletin or cbistpete.org for more information. If we don’t have your email address, or your email has changed, please let the office know, so we can add you to our weekly e-news so you can be up to date on synagogue happenings. In the Theory of Relativity, Time Dilation is an observed difference of elapsed time between two events as measured by observers either moving relative to each other or differently situated from gravitational masses. An accurate clock at rest with respect to one observer may be measured to tick at a different rate when compared to a second observer's own equally accurate clock. This effect arises not from technical aspects of the clocks nor from the fact that signals need time to propagate, but from the nature of Space-Time itself. Sir Isaac Newton (25 December 1642 – 20 March 1727), James Clerk Maxwell (13 June 1831 – 5 November 1879) and Albert Einstein (14 March 1879 – 18 April 1955) have all changed the way we think about time. Time is not an Absolute, it is Relative. So, what has this fact to do with Congregation B’nai Israel and it’s members? Two things come to my mind. One is how we perceive time in Shul and the other is how we use that time effectively.
From the President Sitting in a morning Minyan, I’m astounded how fast some of our baal tefilah daven Schacharit. Even though the rapid tempo keeps the service on schedule, to some that may be too fast. Likewise, some may find an extra five minutes for Shabbat morning services to be annoying while others delight in singing the prayers at a pace they can perform. So Time Is Relative. I used to feel tired standing thirty minutes for Neilah on Yom Kippur, yet as a Surgeon I could stand for hours at the OR table without feeling strained. When we are intensely involved with what we do time goes too fast; when we are bored and uninvolved the time drags on. So my point is, starting this New Year, “Get involved in doing things at CBI”. You will be surprised at how time flies by whether you’re praying at Minyan, working in the office, volunteering for Mitzvah Day or any of the other activities available at our Shul. So NU, use your Time at CBI. Happy and Healthy New Year!!!!

EDUCATION
At the conclusion of the Torah reading, I recite the “Mi She-Berakh” (God who blessed). This particular one is designated for those that have been called for an Aliyah for the Torah. It invokes our ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as well as Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and Leah and proceeds to bless those who have been called up to the Torah with reverence for God, the Torah and Shabbat (or holiday). God is requested to watch over them and their families with blessings and success together with our brother and Jews everywhere. This particular Mi She-Berakh is among many others. There are some for those to be married, a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, for the health of Mother after childbirth as well as the parents for a newborn son or daughter (the son will be named of course at the Brit Milah; the daughter at a Simchat Bat). We offer as well after the first Aliyah the Mi She-Berakh for those who are ill when members of the congregation can ask God‘s help for a “refuah shlaymah” (prayer for healing). We sing together a special one for those who serve the community, help maintain the synagogue and the community as well as the Land of Israel. Mi She-berakh…May God who blessed our ancestors bless us as well!

THE PAULINE RIVKIND TALMUD TORAH
The first semester of the Pauline Rivkind Talmud Torah school was a great success. We had wonderful participation in most of our events--especially our Sunday Seminars.
In January we will be having a very special Sunday Seminar--the Blessing of the Trees which will take place on Sunday, January 29th at 9:00 a.m. We have a very exciting program of the events--and we hope that this will be a great learning experience for all our PRTT families. It is a reminder that the Jewish people understood the importance of being "GREEN" -- and that part of the joy of our religious life is that we have a deep commitment to the land that God has given us. Special thanks to all our teachers for making our first semester so special.

January is often thought of as a time for new beginnings. This is true in our preschool as well. All of the classrooms are fresh and clean. The teachers have rejuvenated over their holidays. Each Shabbat morning children are invited to participate in Congregation Services by leading Ein Keloheinu and Aleinu at the conclusion of Musaf. Please make plans to have your child present at the assigned time. We look forward to hearing our children’s voices raised in song and prayer as they take their places along side all those who continue to make services more meaningful, spiritual and successful here at CBI. The participation schedule is as follows:

JUNIOR CONGREGATION
Here at CBI we hold special Junior Congregation services for children in grades 3-7 on Shabbat mornings in the Chapel at 10:00 am. All children will worship together. They will put into practice the lessons they have learned during the week. Each student will have the opportunity to lead parts of the service, learn new melodies, and explore Shabbat teachings and stories. They will also gain the confidence they will need when it comes time to lead services for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrations. Junior Congregation will meet on Saturdays, January 7, 21, & 28th at 10:00 a.m. We look forward to see your children there.

This month has been filled with wonderful events, getting together with our close friends during the best time of the year! Last month, we made Havdalah on the Beach, in which the entire congregation joined together to end a lovely Shabbat. The weather outside was perfect, with jeans and sweaters, all bundled up together it really did feel like winter! The USY'ers had a great day helping out at the CBI gift and craft show, volunteering and getting to look around at all of the goodies for sale for Hanukkah! I hope you all had a lovely holiday that was spent with family and friends and lots of joy! Hanukkah in USY is always lots of fun with the best cook ever, Sandy, who whipped out delicious Latkes for all of us during our Hebrew High break. Then, at the end of the month members of or chapter traveled all the way to Philly for International Convention 2012! They had an amazing time traveling through the city, meeting USY'ers form across the country and Canada and praying filled with ruach!

Although half of the year is behind us we are excited for all we have planned over the next few months. The USYers and Kadimaniks are counting down to January 28th when they will go on a Mystery Bus Trip. Before boarding separate buses for a night of surprise activities, they will attend Minha, Maariv and Havdalah and of course Seudah, which the Youth Department is once again proud to sponsor. Halutzim will enjoy pizza and a movie, January 8th following Sunday school. Thank you to the Kobernick family who is sponsoring the January Dine and Dash in honor of Alyssa’s birthday. Todah Rabah to all the Youth families who helped with the Ethnic Café during the Gift and Craft Show. Cooking and “picking” over 100 pounds of meat is no easy task and without you it could not have been possible. The Gift and Craft Committee work all year to bring this amazing show to CBI and it is an honor to be part of such worthwhile event. Next month our USY and Kadima chapter will join hundreds of kids in Orlando as we storm the Magic Kingdom with our ruach! For those of you attending please consider purchasing scrip for your kids to use in the park instead of cash. Remember with no additional cost to you CBI is making money! Happy 2012!

Fighting Terrorism For more than six decades, the reality of life in Israel has forced Israelis to defend themselves against constant terrorist threats. As a result, the Jewish state has become a leader in designing techniques and technologies in the arenas of homeland security and counter-terrorism. Israel is working with US government and private entities to develop technologies and equipment aimed at thwarting terrorism and safeguarding citizens in both nations. Aviation Security The Transportation Security Administration and airport officials from around the United States have been working with world-renowned security experts at Israel’s Ben-Gurion International Airport in order to learn how to improve efficiently airline security. In March 2010, the United States and Israel signed an agreement to increase aviation security cooperation. The two allies will conduct drills reviewing procedures in case of attacks and share codes that send immediate alerts if passengers try to commit acts of terror. Police Cooperation Israeli police forces train international peers in security procedures ranging from combating terrorism to preparing for mass casualty emergencies. Israel has worked with multiple American agencies, including the FBI, NYPD, LAPD, and Washington, DC Police Department. The US Capitol Police also have undergone training in Israeli counterterrorism techniques. Bioterrorism American observers from FEMA and the National Guard often travel to Israel to participate in Israeli homeland security drills. In January 2010, Israel conducted a large-scale bio-terrorism drill simulating a smallpox outbreak caused by a terrorist attack. Since then, FEMA and the Israeli National Emergency Authority have signed a formal agreement to conduct more joint-training drills and exercises. Emergency Management FEMA and US National Guard officials have traveled to Israel to study the Jewish state’s nation-wide emergency management drills and procedures. The drills replicate a multitude of disaster scenarios including natural disasters, biological disasters and emergencies at schools and hospitals. Lessons learned through the drills provide American officials invaluable intelligence, experience and knowledge. BOOK REVIEW: THINGS OVERHEARD IN THE SYNAGOGUE

These days, there are many good Jewish poets. But name a great Jewish poem written recently? See? It’s not easy. The reason seems obvious: most Jews who write poetry today are secular, and so is their work. But fortunately, there are exceptions. One is Ira Bedzow, whose first collection of poems, Things Overheard In The Synagogue, has just been published by Urim Publications. Several of the poems retell Biblical stories, and in a section of personal reflections, there are many Talmudic asides. All of it reflects Bedzow’s deep immersion of Jewish texts, as well as a lyrical ear perfectly matched for poems. These are qualities hard to come by these days: a commitment to Jewish learning, as well as secular language. But it’s a perfect reflection of Bedzow, who is both an ordained rabbi and now pursuing a Ph.D. in Jewish thought. Ira also happens to be an old family friend. But I don’t think I betray any false enthusiasm for his work. There is as much playfulness in these poems as there is an acute self-awareness. Bedzow’s use of rhyme may in part account for the insouciant mood, but as you go through the book you realize it’s as much a reflection of hard-earned wisdom. In the personal reflections, which range from lessons drawn from Pirkei Avot, to a parable about individuality, told through a story about choosing the right coffee shop, you find a writer searching for how one should live. A quiet, moving example comes in the piece “Vanguard, En Garde!” Bedzow remembers a story his father told him when he took him to a synagogue as a teenager. His father tells him to go say hello to the rabbi, and when Bedzow returns, his father tells him: “Son, do you want to know what makes him such a successful rabbi?” The rabbi was was never officially hired, his father says, and he wasn’t even ordained. But he was extremely knowledgeable and exceptionally kind. So when the synagogue’s official rabbi left, he naturally filled the void. No one ever questioned his authority, his father says, because the man himself, “never stopped considering himself as just another member.” Bedzow’s search for wisdom is our reward.

December provided us with so many opportunities to be involved at CBI. Cantor Schultz ushered in Shabbat with ruach and we ended Shabbat on beautiful St. Pete. Beach Shabbat at the annual Havdalah on the Beach. Each family took home a Havdalah candle and spice bag with the hope of adding this beautiful service to their families’ tradition. Our building was filled with artists and examples of their craft during the annual Gift and Craft Show. Attending the Show has become one of the popular social events of the year…and you could attend all day Sunday for free. Of course no one could resist buying something! Thank you to everyone who helped in the Ethnic Café’. Funds earned go directly to the Youth Department and is used for tzedakah. The CBI annual Hanukka Celebration had something for everyone. The festivities began with lighting St. Pete’s largest Menorah
and singing Hanukka favorites. The children all received gelt bags and enjoyed making their own Hanukeia. This year we added a Mitzvah Project to our celebration,” Cookies for the Community”. With your help we decorated hundreds of holiday cookies which were then delivered to police stations and firehouses Christmas day. Thanks to the members of Sisterhood, Men’s Club and the Youth Department who made those deliveries. This month Sisterhood will host “Got Shabbat?” dinner January 20th. The theme is Italian and the ladies are planning an amazing Italian Shabbat feast. There is still time to make your reservations. Don’t miss out.

REQUIREMENTS A. Scholarship application is to be complete by February 15, 2012. B. Copy of essay that was submitted with USY Summer Program Application. C. Write an essay: "I Am a Jew Because"...or, "What Will a Summer in Israel or Wheels do for My Jewish Identity?" D. Resume of your youth group activities. E. Before the summer begins, each high school scholarship recipient will be required to give at least 15 hours of service

Before the summer begins, Each high school scholarship recipient will be required to give at least 15 hours of service to the Synagogue and middle school and elementary school scholarship recipients will be required to give at least 8 hours. This will be supervised by the Youth Director. Updated volunteer hours are posted in the Youth Lounge. F. Share your summer experience with the congregation at the annual CBI Ramah Shabbat. II.
