From the Rabbi However, no paradise is perfect. We have embraced its observance, but lost its message. Because of its location, Hanukka has become the Jewish substitute for Christmas. On Hanukka children used to be given Hanukka gelt, not presents. Presents were given on Purim because of the mitzvah of Shalah Manot mentioned in Megilat Esther. We make a big fuss over Hanukka, but have forgotten Shavuot which commemorates the gifting of the Torah and the birth of Judaism. Other holy days are passed over and ignored. Hanukka gets the royal treatment. The irony is that the whole struggle which Hanukka commemorates is about the right to be different, to preserve one’s own culture and identity, to worship as one chooses even if, especially if, it is different from how the majority chooses. Hanukka is about being who you are. The Maccabees risked their lives to combat assimilation in their time. We must stand firm in observing Jeiwsh holidays in Jewish ways. Enjoy Hanukka. Light the candles. Spin the dreidel. Eat the latkes. But don’t forget the message. With best wishes for a Hanukka Sameah!
Shalom,
Rabbi Jacob Luski
If there is perfection among holidays, Hanukka is surely the perfect candidate. Why? Because it is the easiest holiday to observe. Most holy days in the Jewish calendar require elaborate preparation. Not only Pesah,
but Shabbat, Sukkot, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Not so Hanukka. All you have to do is dust off the Menorah, put in the candles and you are ready to go. Most holidays in the Jewish calendar have elaborate rituals. The Hanukka candle lighting is short and sweet. Done in 5 minutes and on to the latkes and dreidels. Most holy days in Judaism have restrictions – work is forbidden on Shabbat and Yom Tov; hametz is forbidden on Pesah; eating is forbidden on Yom Kippur. Hanukka is about indulgence. After all latkes fried in oil are at best a rare treat. On Hanukka it is (almost) a mitzvah to indulge. Most other holy days come at inconvenient times. Not Hanukka. It comes when most of the rest of the world is observing the major holiday of the year.

Often times something triggers a fond memory, and then my mind begins to wander. Right now, I’m thinking about celebrating Hanukka growing up in Tampa. I was usually the only Jewish child in my class. I would share my Hanukka experiences and all the other kids were jealous that I got eight
presents. What they didn’t know was that most of my presents were socks, underwear, pjs, etc. and other items at least 3 sizes too big – we would grow into them, my mother would tell me in Brooklynese. The latkes frying smelled wonderful and of course were delicious. The candles were mystical. More importantly, it was a time of being together. My older siblings would be home from college with a few friends, and my mother would be cooking up a storm. This year, our family will make new memories with a new generation, a beautiful granddaughter, her parents and the rest of our brood. You will have a chance to make your own family memories, plus you can make some CBI Hanukka memories.
The Gift Galleria leads us into the holiday on Sunday & Monday, December 6 and 7. You can shop for yourself and for gifts for others, shmooze with friends and have a delicious lunch to top off the day(s). Our annual Hanukka Party will be Tuesday, December 15 and it is going to be lots of fun. Lighting two menorahs, one of ice, eating latkes made with love by Mitzvah Men’s Club, and enjoying jelly donuts and chocolate fountain for dessert sponsored by the Sisterhood. The food will be great, but the conversations will be better. Don’t miss these chances to add to your memories. Happy Hanukka,
Sara Latham, Executive Director
From the Executive Director
PROFILE IN LEADERSHIP SERIES Introducing LORNE ABRAMS CBI Member Since 2007
Question 1: Please define yourself. Sharron and I have been married for 17
years and are both duel Canadian and US citizens. We emigrated to New Jersey in 1992 and relocated to Florida in 2000. I am a Professional Engineer with an background in Quality, Cost Reduction and Value Engineering (system and process efficiency). I attended Canadian Universities for both my undergraduate and graduate degrees and I have a PhD in Engineering Management from Kennedy Western University in California. I play tennis for recreation and value my private time with Sharron, who is my best friend and companion. We have eight grand-children with the 9th expected late December 2009.
Question 2: What’s your role at CBI? I am the current Treasurer of CBI and have been a Board member for the past 3 years. We co-chaired Mitzvah Day for 2008 & 2009 and are members of the Social Action Committee.
Question 3: What is your favorite book or movie or music on your ipod? Why? I enjoy classical music and modern opera. I have been listening to the classics and pops versions since my University days. I
From the President find it relaxing and calming as well as allowing me to ‘tune out’ the bustle of the daily grind.
Question 4: What is your favorite Jewish holiday? Why? My favorite time Selichot – as it is a time for launching the New Year and the beginning of the traditional holiday period.
Question 5: What values do you try to emulate and pass-on? I believe that we should value our relationships with our elders, peers and children. Respect for individuals of all ages is best expressed by allowing each person we come into contact with to have an opportunity to provide input (conversation, questions, and experience) and receive an appropriate response in all situations and circumstances.
Question 6: Who has made the biggest impact on your Jewish life? Wthout doubt it is Sharron, my wife. She is a very strong traditionalist with conservative values and a driving desire to maintain family relationships. A Jewish Holiday or Simcha will not pass without Sharron planning and insisting on family participation.
Question 7: Which is your favorite Jewish ritual to practice? We especially look forward to Friday Shabbat and holiday times as we focus on family time together.
Question 8: When do you most feel Jewish? When I attend a Bar or Bat Mitzvah and watch a young Jewish child transform into an adult in the eyes of his/her family and the Jewish community. Seeing the leaders of the future, the ones who will continue to propagate our conservative Judaism makes me feel proud to be Jewish.
Question 9: What is your most memorable moment at CBI? The first Mitzvah Day we attended where we viewed the efforts made by the entire community in a truly volunteer activity. It was both meaningful and satisfying to participate in the activities at the Homeless Shelter.
Question 10: What motivated you to say YES to CBI? On our first visit to CBI, Sharron and I immediately felt welcome and were pleased with the atmosphere at CBI. We were looking for a social environment where we could meet and associate with other contemporaries who share similar interests to ours.
Question 11: What do you do to re-energize? I prefer quiet time to read a suspense novel, usually while sitting at the pool or at one of St. Petersburg’s many beaches. I find an afternoon picnic at Fort De Soto Park to be my favorite pass time to rejuvenate myself. I play tennis twice a week for exercise.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT
Often the month of December is referred to as the month of giving. Although for Jews tzedakah is encouraged the entire year. Within each of us we hold the best gift to be given, the gift of ourselves! It’s been months since Simhat Torah but I still feel the joy I shared with our youth while doing a mitzvah. On Yom Tov morning the kids joined me in bringing residents from Menorah Manor to celebrate Simhat Torah at CBI. I knew when I asked if any of them would meet me at Menorah Manor early Sunday morning what it meant. As a teen giving up the chance to sleep in is not taken lightly! For some of the residents it was there first time at CBI, and I suspect, the first time in a long while some had been in a Synagogue. They watched us dance and sing and it warmed our hearts to help them reach out and kiss the Torah. The joy they had was obvious but clearly we, the kids and I, were the true winners. We were touched by the words of thanks and by the married couple side by side in their wheel chairs tenderly holding hands. After we returned the residents to Menorah Manor the kids asked if we could go to Toby Weinman. They remembered the wonderful Shabbat we spent at Toby last year. We sang Torah, Torah and greeted residents as they began to gather for lunch. As we hugged goodbye that day, we all felt it! We had received a gift we would cherish! The gift of giving of ourselves! Todah Rabah to the Sokolov Family for sponsoring the November Dine and Dash. The youth community has been hopping! Kadima had a fantastic time at the overnight at the Florida Aquarium and enjoyed learning about the exhibits and making new friends from Congregation Beth Shalom. Thank you to all who supported the pumpkin bread sale. We were able to give each Jewish resident at Philip Benjamin Tower fresh pumpkin bread for Thanksgiving. Our first Havdalah on the Beach was such fun and thanks to our USYers who lead us in prayer and song.

COLLEGE CORNER
From Rabbi Jacob Luski… One of the most important mitzvoth in Judaism is bikkur holim—visiting the sick. It is a responsibility that the clergy of B’nai Israel takes very seriously. When our members are ill or hospitalized, we want to know. In the interest of protecting confidentiality, hospitals today are extremely cautious about sharing patient names, even with rabbis. We need our congregants to communicate directly with us and to inform us of illness or hospitalization. Please call the synagogue office, 381-4900, ext. 201 so that as clergy and as a synagogue family, we can be helpful in moments of difficulty or stress.
DAVENERS NEEDED The Ritual Committee is seeking to increase the number of Congregants who have the ability to lead services--especially morning and evening services at Daily Minyan. Those with prior davening experience who wish to improve their skills, or those with no prior experience who want to learn this most important and rewarding skill are invited. Please contact the Synagogue Office at 381-4900 to express your interest. Hazzan Goldstein has graciously agreed to conduct classes based on the number of people expressing interest. Thank you very much. Morry Bornstein Ritual Committee Chair

BOOK REVIEW
I would like to recommend a truly remarkable work of historical fiction entitled Songs for the Butcher’s Daughter by Peter Manseau. The author is a non-Jew (son of a nun and Catholic priest!) who is one of the world’s last Yiddish typesetters. Somehow he brilliantly captures the nuances of speech and the flavor of the Jewish immigrants’ experience. Manseau worked for a time at the National Yiddish Book Center in western Massachusetts, and his novel begins in a similar setting. The narrator of the story is a writer much like himself, who intersperses his translation of a Yiddish memoir with “Translator’s Notes” that reveal his own love affair with a non-secular Jewish woman. The memoir tells the story of Itsik Malpesh, who travels from 19th-century Russia to New York, (and later Israel) where he becomes a typesetter. Many important issues of the day come into play, such as Yiddish vs. Hebrew, Zionism vs. Communism, and religion vs. secularism. Songs for the Butcher’s Daughter has won several prestigious awards; you will find yourself laughing, crying, and wanting to reread passages. The Baltimore Sun has said “Peter Manseau’s novel creates a Marc
Chagall-like world of pathos, humor and enchantment.” See for yourself - we have a copy in our CBI Library!

Every study conducted by the Council of Jewish Federations over the past 20 years has reached the same conclusion – that there is no substitute for sending one’s child on a Jewish/Israel Experience, whether to a summer program in Israel, or to a recognized Jewish summer camp or program sponsored by a nationally or internationally recognized Jewish/Israel youth organization. In 1997, the Jewish Federation of Pinellas/Pasco Counties began offering these scholarships and created The Covenant Fund Youth Awards. We are again welcoming applications for the 2010 Covenant Fund Youth Awards. As in the past, there are three different categories of awards: Grade School “sleep away camp” awards for youths in grades 4-8; High School Awards for those in grades nine – 12 and Covenant Fund College Awards (for accredited study only). Scholarships will be Need Based Only. The Jewish Federation will be accepting applications through Friday, January 22, 2010. Collectively, our teens have opted for a wide variety of Jewish/Israel Experience Programs including the USY Israel-Poland Pilgrimage, the Machon in Israel Program, the National Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY), Camp Ramah, Camp Coleman, etc. The guidelines include the option of attending recognized Jewish Summer camps in North America or Jewish Experience programs such as March of the Living. For more information on the Covenant Fund or to request an
application, visit www.jewishpinellaspiness.org or call the Federation at (727) 530-3223.

Happy Hanukka everyone! I want to thank the great
women who lead the Gift Galleria at CBI. Thanks to all the volunteers who assist in so many ways to make this event successful in so many ways, fund raising being just one.
DON’T FORGET SCRIP GIFT CARDS FOR THE HOLIDAYS!!!!
If you did not find the perfect gift at the Gift Galleria and you plan to buy gift cards as holiday gifts….PLEASE ORDER THEM THROUGH THE CBI SCRIP PROGRAM!!! IF you have never ordered SCRIP cards before, either myself or Jay Kauffman ([email protected]) will help you through it. There are no extra charges. You order a gift card ( just like the ones you buy in stores) for the value you want for one of over 600 vendors on our list and CBI makes a percentage of your purchase. OR, You can fill out a form in the office or go online to order. The online link is: www.cbistpete.org and at the bottom of the page click on the icon that says CBI SCRIP. If you are traveling over the holidays, there are cards for many hotels and rental car companies. This is one creative way to raise funds for the shul without you having to pay additional monies. We need your participation to make it successful.

FROM THE MAILBAG!
Dear Rabbi Luski, Thank you so very much for again attending “Soup’s On” and offering our invocation. Of all the “Soup’s”, this year was attended by our largest crowd and so many people made a free-will offering. A couple of years ago, we almost scrapped this event--thank goodness we didn’t. Again, thank you for attending and for your inspiring words. Much Appreciation, Angel Schumaker, St. Petersburg Free Clinic Dear Rabbi, Staff and Congregants: Once again your congregation has heard our critical call to restock our food pantry for the New Year. We thank you for your participation in Operation Isaiah – our High Holiday food drive. As it says in Isaiah 58:6-7, “This is my chosen fast…share your bread with the hungry.” At a time of year when Jews are searching their souls, and seeking to better themselves for the New Year, Jewish tradition obligates us to give of our selves to others. The resounding response from your congregation filled our pantry just in time for the long winter months ahead. When those in need in the Jewish community call, we head straight for the food pantry to fill bags with pasta, tuna, and other such staples to tide them over until their situation stabilizes. Our efforts are met with gratitude and appreciation. As always, please feel free to call me at (727)479-1806 with any questions or concerns. Sincerely, Francine H. Wolf, Family Support Services Coordinator
Introduction To Judaism Rabbi Jacob Luski has announced a new class is forming for his Introduction
to Judaism. This class is a unique opportunity for Jews by birth to learn more about the meaning of Judaism, as well as those non-Jews considering
conversion. The class offers a warm and intimate environment to explore the fundamental beliefs, values, practices and history that have shaped the
Jewish people throughout the ages. Please contact Rabbi Jacob Luski at
727-381-4900, extension 203, about your interest in this class.

KOSHER KORNER Vietnamese River Cobbler (also known as
Basa, Panga or Boucourti), is a catfish and
therefore, non kosher fish, that has recently
appeared in supermarkets and fish stores. Publix Home-style Idaho Potatoes (32
oz box) distributed by Publix Supermarkets,
Lakeland, Florida, contains dairy ingredients
as listed on the ingredient panel, but
erroneously bears the “OV” symbol without
the “D” for dairy designation. It is indeed,
dairy. Packaging is being revised to correctly
bear the “D” symbol. Listerine Pocketpaks, Johnson & Johnson,
are no longer “KOF-K”-certified and will no
longer bear the “KOF-K” kosher symbol.
Products bearing the “OF-K were produced
under “KOF-K” certification.
