SIMHA SHABBAT! CELEBRATE BIRTHDAYS AND
ANNIVERSARIES ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 15
Page 3
From the Rabbi
Hanukka, which literally means “dedication,” tells the story of the Maccabees who fought for Jewish beliefs, values and traditions. Hanukkah is a Jewish story of commitment, vitality, hope and justice. “Judah Maccabee and his fighters built high walls
and strong towers around Mount Zion, so that the gentiles would never again come and destroy them, as they have done before.” Maccabees 1 The message of Hanukka is clear to anyone who reads the Biblical books of the Maccabees. Only by following the lessons of our history can we rekindle the Hanukkah spirit of our tradition and give the Jewish people the strength to be a light unto the nations. While celebrating Hanukka 5773, we remember the heroes and heroines of the Warsaw Ghetto who never put down their weapons, nor gave up their faith. Let us remember our beloved brothers and sisters who were murdered at the hands of terrorists. Let us remember the new Maccabees, our brave Israeli soldiers who have fallen in the struggle for independence and security of our beloved State of Israel. We must never, ever let history repeat itself. We should, and we will, go on, one generation after the other into the future. Nothing is more miraculous than the survival, both physically and spiritually, of Am Israel – the Jewish People.
The waves of hatred that we are witnessing today against the State of Israel and the Jewish People teach us that we must remember: Never Again! Am Israel Chai! The Jewish People live, today and forever! Our fight is not a fight only against our enemies, but a fight for Jewish values, for Judaism! May the lights of Hanukka forever illuminate the way for future generations. With best wishes for a bright and joyous holiday of lights,
Shalom,
Rabbi Jacob Luski
“Al Hanissim” is the definitive Hanukka prayer in our liturgy, and it is the only part of our worship services that is unique to Hanukka. It recounts briefly the Maccabees’ revolt against the Syrian Greeks, and then praises God for standing by us in that time of great distress: “You, in great mercy, stood by Your people in time of trouble. You defended them, vindicated them, and avenged their wrongs. You delivered the strong into the hands of the weak, the many into the hands of the few, the corrupt into the hands of the pure in heart, the guilty into the hands of the innocent. You delivered the arrogant into the hands of those who were faithful to Your Torah.” The prayer then ends with a brief recounting of the Maccabees restoring and purifying the Temple and kindling the lamps.
Happy Hanukka!
Cantor Jonathan Schultz
Now that we have just completed a month with no Jewish holidays, we are approaching the winter highlight, Hanukka. This year, we are celebrating Chai-5 for CBI all year long, and in conjunction with our 90 th Anniversary
celebrations, we have a loaded Hanukka celebration schedule. On Tuesday, December 11, we will hold our annual Hanukkah Celebration, with the outdoor lighting of our CBI menorah, Hanukkah songs, latkes, and an evening of fun. On Saturday night, December 15, we will have Havdalah and Hanukkah at the Beach. And as if that weren’t enough, on Sunday morning, December 16, the last day of Hanukka, our very own PRTT will present “Peter Pan,” entirely in Hebrew. Although Hanukka is by far one of the most popular Jewish holidays, it is halakhically and liturgically considered to be a minor holiday. The weekday services during Hanukka are regular weekday services with special additions for Hanukka: we add “Al Hanissim” in the Amidah; we recite full Hallel during Shaharit; and we read Torah every morning of Hanukka, with three aliyot on weekdays.

What an exciting time to be a member of CBI. As we continue to celebrate our 90th year of Conservative Judaism in St. Pete, we continue to offer our members and the community so many opportunities. Shop and volunteer at our Grift and Craft Show. This amazing event continues to grow each year under the leadership of an
amazing and talented committee. Celebrate Havdalah and Hanukkah on the Beach. Enjoy a free Haunkkah Concert by the LeeVee’s following CBI’s own community Menorah lighting. This is especially exciting as we are partnering with the JCC Suncoast to offer this concert. We look forward to many collaborative programs. Kvell as our PRTT students present scenes and songs from Peter Pan in Hebrew! Please come out and watch on Sunday December 16th. Celebrate Shabbat weekly and daven daily!! This is just a sample of the many things offered. There is something for everyone! Your Board of Trustees and Executive Committees continue to work hard to serve our congregation. Be sure to thank them for their service. We are pleased to welcome Larry Freid back to the board. Thank you to everyone who gives of their time and financial resources to make CBI a better place. K’riat Ha- Torah---The Torah Service---Part 2
Now that we know the historical basis for the public reading of the Torah, it is time to review the service. Before the Torah is removed from the ark, psalms are read praising God. On Shabbat we begin with “Ein Ka’mo-cha—None compares to you” which is taken from Psalm 86:8. We then declare “Malchootcha, Malchoot---Your Sovereignty” which we remember from the Ash’rei – Psalm 145:13. Continuing with the statement that God is our ruler in the present, past and future (from Psalms and Exodus). In our melodies we sing these in major keys which remind me of a group of trumpets. Then we switch to a minor key from “Av-Ha’rachamim—Source of Compassion.” We are pleading to God to “build the walls of Jerusalem” and ask to restore and favor Zion. It is a most appropriate time to request to God what is most important for our People. As the Ark is open we go to the major key again and recite a passage from Numbers 10:35: “Va-y’hi binso’a ha-aron---Whenever the Ark was carried forward.” We are actually describing the manner in which
Torah Education
the Tablets were carried at the head of the column as the children of Israel marched from place to place on their way to Canaan. Archeology of some ancient synagogues showed that the Torah was kept in an adjoining room and then carried in when it was time to read the Torah. “Ki mi-Tzion—Torah shall come from Zion” are from the words of Isaiah 2:3 stating that all nations shall come to Jerusalem to worship God and learn from His Torah. “Ba-ruch Sheh’Na’tan—Blessed in the Giver” is the final blessing thanking God who granted us this gift. We do not worship at altars or statues but praise the words of the Torah that was given by God to Israel. The next part is in the Aramaic language from the Zohar (Kabbalah) and begins with “Brich Sh’may---Praised be your name.” According to the Zohar the gates of heaven open when the Torah is read so it is a personal time to ask God to, “Answer my prayers, and the prayers of all your people Israel for goodness, for life, and for peace. Amen”

Shul Ettiquette This is a tale from your neighbors Who sit in the opposite row. We hear every word when you whisper No matter how high or how low. We hear when you enter the sanctuary We hear when you make all your greetings You think that your voice doesn’t carry. When you lean over and talk about meetings. We hear your cellophane wrapper Unfold for what feel like forever. We hear when your child gets ornery, And you start to read her a story. We see when there are alyiot If the skirts are really too short. We hear when your cell phone is singing And you can’t get the thing to stop ringing. So don’t take this poem as fiction As each line reminds us of school. We ask you to be a good neighbor And we all can enjoy time in Shul.
This little ditty is meant for all to read. I have compiled each of the stanzas from my cumulative experiences from many places where there should be quiet—concerts, opera, theater, meetings, synagogue. To change gears, thanks to all who helped to make our many recent events successful. We have been very busy with catered affairs and have many more to look forward to. Please remember Women’s League Catering when you are thinking of a celebration. We are happy to cater “Your Simcha; Your Way.”
And don’t forget those last minute Hanukka gifts can be purchased from our Judaica Shop. There are so many fine items that you may not have known you needed. And if you have finished shopping for all of the others—take time to look around for yourself!
Happy Hanukka

For over seven years, The Jewish Federation of Pinellas and Pasco

tion. Each year, our local Jewish organizations and congregations
nominate outstanding women who exemplify leadership and commit-
ment to their organizations and, by extension, to our community in
Pinellas and Pasco Counties. These women embody our Jewish
value of Tikkun Olam in a world experiencing great need of repair. CBI Members Being Honored:

Women Ensuring Conservative /Masorti Jewish Education As women, we experience many wake-up calls. Devorah the Prophet was a judge in Israel when she was roused from her seat under a palm tree to lead her people’s troops into battle with the words, “Arise, arise, Devorah; arise and join in the chant” (Judges 5:12). Being roused to action is often just the prelude to awakening others, whether via the shofar, as seen growing out of the letter “ayin” in the 5773 Torah Fund pin-or by using our voices to focus on the critical needs of our families and communities, our movement and our people. Uri, uri--awake--and shir dabeiri- sing a song-of activity, victory and thanks to the Holy One whose light illuminates all of our waking moments!

THE PAULINE RIVKIND TALMUD TORAH
When we light our candles each night of Hanukka, one notices that the flame never looks the same from one instant to the next. But when we see the core in the middle it remains unchanged. In other words, there are many meanings, customs
and rituals that are evolving even today, but the basis of the holiday remains the same. We are still few in number but must remain vigilant in our traditions, learning and ideals. This is not only a holiday of presents, latkes and sufganiyot but the triumph of our people against enormous odds. Hanukka is indeed one of the most popular and happiest of all Jewish holidays. We are fortunate to celebrate this with our family and community. It is incumbent to know its history and be able to explain its customs to Jews and non-Jews.
At PRTT we go to Menorah Manor and sing a group of Hanukka songs to the residents. We enjoy seeing and sharing their happiness at this time of year.

THE PAULINE RIVKIND PRESCHOOL
Hanukkah – Tikun Olam Why not think about a new view on Hanukkah this season? Children love this holiday because they receive “eight nights of presents!” You don’t need to change your family traditions of gift giving, however why not begin new traditions. Children as young as four years old can begin to understand to warm feeling received upon helping people less fortunate.
Spend an afternoon going through toys and games. Choose some to give to CASA, All Children’s Hospital, Gulf Coast Jewish Family Service or a charity of your choice.
Spend a day helping an elderly neighbor clean up their yard.
Families with older children can help out at a soup kitchen or Meals on Wheels.
Donate gently used books to the public library. Giving children the opportunity to meet the people they are helping will add to the experience. Extend the experience further by having younger children draw pictures and tell you about the picture. Older children can write a story and share it with their teachers and classmates. Make this holiday extra special for your family, as well as those who benefit from your Mitzvot. Help support Pauline Rivkind Preschool by purchasing your Dreidel Drawing tickets. You do not need to be present to win! Great prizes! Gift certificates to restaurants, spas, boutiques, art work, jewelry, and more………… Contact Bonnie at 302-9668 if you still need tickets!
Happy Hanukka! Bonnie Halprin, Preschool Director

YOUTH DEPARTMENT
It’s December and that means its time for USY International Convention. This year nearly 1,000 USYers will descend on Boston for five days of fun, friends, learning and RUACH! The first IC I attended as a USYer was in Boston and in addition to seeing snow for the first time, I will never forget the ruach. Something magical happens when you daven surrounded by other USYers from around North America. I challenge those who will represent CBI at International Convention 2012 to bring the magic back to St. Pete. December 16th we are pleased to host Mercaz IMPACT program. Tenth grades from around Mercaz Sub Region will meet at CBI for a special leadership program designed just for 10 graders. Orientation for this new and innovative program took place during the fall convention. This year’s annual Havdalah on the Beach is sure to be memorable as we celebrate the last night of Hanukka together on Upham Beach. After Havdalah, USYers and Kadimaniks will go to the Trade Winds Resort for a night of games and Glo Volleyball! Please be sure to RSVP for this event!

The Festival of Hanukka begins on the eve of the 25th of Kislev, the day when the Maccabees cleansed and rededicated the Holy Temple, having vanquished Israel’s tyrannical oppressors. It is told that they found only one little cruse of pure, undefiled oil, but miraculously, it burned in the Temple menorah for 8 days, In commemoration, our Festival lasts 8 days, and every evening we kindle lights of oil or candles in a Hanukka menorah. One is lit the first night, two the second night, and so on, until 8 lights are kindled on the final evening.
The Menorah’s light is holy and may not be used for any ordinary purposes, i.e., to read by. Therefore, an extra light, or candle—a shammes– is added every evening, so that if the light is inadvertently used, there will also be non-holy light.
The menorah should stand in a special place, where such oil lights or candles are not usually burned. It should be placed in a window facing the street or at the left of a doorway, at about table level, but protected against the wind—to proclaim the miracle of Hanukka.
The lights are to be kindled directly at nightfall, when the stars appear, with all the family present, and they should burn at least half an hour. If someone cannot light them at nightfall, they may do so later, as long as the family is awake to watch.
In putting the oil lights or candles in the menorah, begin from the right end. In lighting them, begin from the left. The shames, the extra light, should be higher, but the Hanukka lights should be level, none higher or lower, and not too close to one another.
The Menorah is lit in the synagogue too, before evening services, Maariv, to heighten our awareness of the miracle of Hanukka. But this excuses no one, not even the person who lights the synagogue menorah, from kindling lights at home.
Women have the same obligation as men about kindling Hanukka lights. Therefore, if a man cannot be present when a menorah is lit, she should light one herself.
Late Friday afternoon, the Hanukka lights should be kindled before the Sabbath candles, and they should be able to burn until at least half an hour after nightfall. On Saturday night, the menorah is lit after havdala has been recited.

The candles are placed from right to left, as one faces the Hanukkia, as Hebrew is read, but they are lit from
left to right, so that on each night, the new candle is given special welcome by being lit first. Only the Shammash is used to light the other candles. The candles should be lit as soon as possible once dark. On Friday night, however, the Hanukka candles are lit BEFORE the Shabbat candles. At the close of Shabbat, the Havdala ceremony precedes the lighting of the Hanukkia.

Tampa Bay Jewish Film Festival Select Series Saturday, January 5th, 7:00 pm Big screen in the Social Hall Noodle is an award-winning Israeli film directed by Ayelet
Menahemi, written by Shemi Zarhin and Ayelet Menahemi, and starring Mili Avital, Chen Baoqi, and Alon Aboutboul.
When the Chinese woman working in Israel for Miri Kalderon, an Israeli flight attendant, is suddenly deported for overstaying her
work visa, her lack of Hebrew-language skills makes it impossible for her to convince the Israeli authorities that she has a young child
with her. Miri, twice-widowed because of the ongoing Arab-Israeli wars, has been going through the motions of living, somehow
detached from a real connection to life itself. Her decision to help reunite the child—nicknamed "Noodle"—with his mother, now back
in Beijing, ends up helping her, not just the boy and his mother, in ways Miri herself could not have expected.

The following quiz is adapted from one provided by MercazUSA’s Israel Advocacy Committee. A purpose of the quiz is to illustrate that many of us may not have information to refute common misconceptions. Straightforward information that doesn’t lend itself to interpretation or spin is useful for helping people come to the conclusion that some of their assumptions may be based on misinformation. The facts should be stated neutrally. Honesty, accuracy, and common sense are the keys to waging a successful campaign to improve Israel's standing in the court of public opinion.

FAMILY PROGRAMS
Hanukka is approaching and although it is a minor festival on our Jewish calendar, this time of year can bring challenges to families with young children. It has been my experience if we celebrate our Jewish holidays and festivals, with their rich tradition, to the fullest our children never feel like they are missing out. This month is full of opportunities to celebrate! Tuesday, December 11th, CBI will have the annual Hanukka celebration. Bring the whole family at 5:30 for singing and lighting of the giant menorah. The Mitzvah Men’s Club and Women’s League will serve latkes and dessert and there will be dreidels for all the children. We have teamed up with the JCC Suncoast to bring The LeeVees to perform at 7:15 pm as part of our Hanukka and year long 90th anniversary celebration. The entire community is invited to join our simcha.
The celebration continues Saturday night, December 15, at Havdalah and Hanukka on the Beach. Bring your menorah and candles and join your congregational family for the last candle lighting of Hanukka 5773! After Havdalah and Hanukka on the Beach the “ISH” group will schmooze around a bonfire behind the Trade Winds Resort at their third event of the year. If you are 20 ish to 40 ish and would like to be including in the group mailing please let us know! Check out the flyers in this bulletin for all the details. Remember to mark your calendars now for the next Got Shabbat? Dinner, January 18th, 2013

Juilliard at JTS and Other Musical Offerings from the JTS Arts Initiative
The concert JTS Presents: An Evening of Juilliard Vocal and Chamber Music, held in November, marked the first visit to JTS by an ensem-ble from the Juilliard School in New York. The concert was held for free to encourage attendance by those affected by Hurricane Sandy. In the 2012–2013 season, two Juilliard ensembles will visit JTS in daylong residencies that include dynamic performances and master classes that educate and inspire. Through examination of Jewish culture and community within the arts, the residencies—including the evening concerts, which are open to the public—will incorpo-rate music of composers of Jewish heritage, as well as composi-tions that highlight Jewish themes and traditions. Featured per-formers include alumni from Juilliard’s Ellen and James A. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts and its Music Division in the fall, and per-formers from Juilliard Jazz in the spring. The spring performance is currently planned for April 4, 2013. Separately, the H. L. Miller Cantorial School Chorus, of the H. L. Miller Cantorial School and College of Jewish Music, will present We Are Lights: A Concert of Chanukah Music on Thursday, Decem-ber 6, 2012, at 6:00 p.m., at JTS. The performance will feature the New York premiere of Eight Days of Chanukah, by Abraham Kaplan. Hazzan David F. Tilman will conduct, and Elizabeth Rodgers will provide piano accompaniment.
