From the Rabbi
An important question about Hanukkah was asked by the great scholar and mystic Rabbi Joseph Karo. If the oil was only supposed to last one day, and lasted eight, then why don’t we celebrate Hanukkah for
seven days? After all, the first day of the oil burning was no miracle. Many legal answers are presented for this question, but none provide real satisfaction. Perhaps the real answer is not legal but spiritual. The greatest miracle was that after the persecution, the difficulties, the trials of life in those days, when the Temple in Jerusalem was defiled and Jews were forbidden to practice Judaism, Jews still clung fast to their faith. The greatest miracle was the first day, that those beleaguered Jews still wanted to light the menorah. God’s miracle came later. The miracle of the Jewish people, of faith, came first. “Hanukkah” is rededication. The drive to rededicate that which has fallen into disuse is profoundly important. Can we see sparks of holiness beneath the dust of a neglected prayerbook? Does our hanukkiyah-menorah glow, however dim and distant with light? Rededication, that is the miracle. If we manage that, the oil will burn for countless nights to come.

First, I would like to say that I’m excited to be your new Cantor. I came in with the intent to bring joy through music to Z’man Simchateinu, and I definitely felt an air of simcha throughout Sukkot and the Shabbatot since then. I’m also grateful to all of you
who have welcomed me so warmly into the CBI community. I have been enjoying getting to know many of you, and I look forward to meeting more of you along the way. December is, of course, holiday season – not only for us, but also for many people around the world. We celebrate the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem; Christians celebrate the birth of their icon; and the entire world celebrates the end of one year and the beginning of the next. Here at CBI, we will of course have a major Hanukkah celebration. In addition to that, Rabbi Luski and I are planning special Friday night programming throughout December, to highlight and augment the festive air of the season. At our late, 8 pm Friday night services in December, we will have Shabbat Ruach – extra singing of spirited, lively songs at the beginning and throughout the service, to bring us closer to the spirit of Shabbat. And at two of our early, 5:30 pm services, we will celebrate Shabbat with the music of Shlomo Carlebach. Carlebach, of course, needs no introduction – he was one of the most influential Jewish songwriters of all time, and some of his most famous songs have become synagogue standards, such as V’ha’er Eineinu, Am Yisra’el Chai, and Esa Einai. December will be a fun month at CBI. The Gift and Craft Show scheduled for Saturday evening, December 10, and all day Sunday, December 11 will give you the opportunity to do gift shopping for the holidays, birthdays, and all other occasions. Also on
Sunday, December 11, the Bloodmobile will be back. Consider giving “The Gift of Life.” The Scholastic Book Fair will be available from December 7 through December 14. I have enjoyed reading many of the books I bought last year to my granddaughter. The Preschool will be continuing its annual Dreidel Drawing featuring lots of unique items And, of course, there is always food. The Youth Department will be will be preparing and selling lunch – pulled bbq brisket & chicken, black beans and rice, hot dogs, green salad and tuna salad. Top off lunch with delicious desserts from Sisterhood. The winning ticket for the Gelt Giveaway will be drawn on Sunday at the Gift and Craft Show. For a $100 drawing ticket, you have a chance to win the $5,000 grand prize! Besides having fun, you will be supporting a major fundraiser for CBI. Consider going in with a group of friends to purchase a ticket. Our annual CBI Hanukka Party will be held on Wednesday, December 21 beginning at 6 p.m. It will be a fun filled evening with lighting the Menorah, singing Hanukka favorites, latkes provided by Mitzvah Men’s Club and sufginot provided by Sisterhood. There will also be entertainment provided by Rebecca & Jeremy Douglass, professional musicians and members of our congregation. There is no charge for this event. It’s almost the end of the year. It’s not too late to make your 2011 tax deductible donations to the synagogue. May the lights of Hanukka inspire you, awaken you, and brighten your life. Happy Hanukka to you and your family!

Legacy
Something transmitted by or received from an ancestor or predecessor or from the past.
I was recently reading about two people who have
impacted our lives, either directly or indirectly. One was Steven Jobs and the other Jim Coats. Steve Jobs, the Apple Visionary and CEO, recently passed away after his fight against pancreatic cancer. Jim Coats, the respected Sheriff of Pinellas County, just retired from his law enforcement career in order to spend more time with his wife and family. Each was greatly respected in their fields and each touched our lives, leaving their “Legacy” behind for others to share. It is beyond my humble abilities to summarize their lives and accomplishments. For that knowledge, you can find many sources of information at your fingertips. Rather, I want you to take a few minutes to think about your Legacy and, most specially, as it pertains to our Congregation B’nai Israel. Our Community at CBI offers so many and varied opportunities for each of us to leave our mark. Most recently the Engagement Committee requested your input as to how you would like to be involved at CBI. There was a huge response of folded-down tabs on the cards passed out on Rosh Hashanah, and the committee members
From the President are working to get in touch with each of you that responded. I hope that all of you will be able to carry out your New Year’s wishes to be involved at CBI. Another example of involvement is our annual “Gifts & Crafts Show”, just a few weeks away. The wonderful group of ladies and men that volunteer their time and energy to make this event such a success will surely have left their “ˆLegacy” at CBI for all to remember in years to come. These are just a few of the multitude ways that each of us can “leave our mark” at CBI. At the funeral of Steve Jobs, his sister’s Eulogy mentioned his words before Steve left behind his earthly home. He reportedly said, “Oh Wow, Oh Wow, Oh Wow.” We may never know the exact meaning of these words. In my mind, I believe he was able, in these last moments of consciousness, to truly realize the magnitude of how he had impacted this world and its inhabitants. He clearly saw his Legacy to the World. May we all be able some day to say “Oh Wow” when thinking of the “Legacy” of our lives.

Did you ever notice that if you want something done, you should give it to a busy person? Sisterhood is composed of very busy women! Seems we have many multi-taskers who can be found at CBI nearly every day. Many of us are working, going to school, car-pooling, cooking, cleaning, schlepping family from one place to another. How is there time for Sisterhood? Well, I’m never sure, but I do know that we have a dedicated cadre of women who give their all to Sisterhood. BUT--we need more!!! We need to have some new faces and new ideas and help in making things happen for CBI. If we are to keep things going, we all need to chip in and help. What are some of the things that we do? Provide scholarships for our kids for summer programs; Participate in a mitzvah project on Mitzvah Day; Provide Kiddush and Oneg each Shabbat; Coordinate and supply the kitchen by cooking, baking, shopping, oversight Kashruth; Support CBI with a financial contribution; Birthday and Anniversary Shabbat; Judaica Shop; Many more things whenever asked! That is the work of Sisterhood. And we also have fun! We laugh together, we travel together to meetings locally and throughout the state and country; we pray together; we learn together; we support each other. Please join us and help us have even more successes. We really do need your participation in any small way that you can give it to keep up these wonderful activities going. Thank you to Starr Silver, Membership VP, and her wonderful committee who gave us a winning Membership Fling. We are working on Sisterhood Shabbat which will be held on January 20-21. We will be making the Got Shabbat? Dinner (Italian theme), leading services on Friday and Saturday, singing with the famous Sisterhood Singers. Hanukka – Tikun Olam Why not think about a new view on Hanukka this season? Children love this holiday because they receive “eight nights of presents!” You don’t need to change your family traditions of gift giving, however why not begin new traditions. Children as young as four years old can begin to understand to warm feeling received upon helping people less fortunate. Spend an afternoon going through toys and games.
Choose some to give to CASA, All Children’s Hospital, Gulf Coast Jewish Family Service or a charity of your choice.
Spend a day helping an elderly neighbor clean up their
yard. Families with older children can help out at a soup kitchen
or Meals on Wheels. Donate gently used books to the public library. Giving children the opportunity to meet the people they are helping will add to the experience. Extend the experience further by having younger children draw pictures and tell you about the picture. Older children can write a story and share it with their teachers and classmates. Make this holiday extra special for your family, as well as those who benefit from your mitzvot.

JUNIOR CONGREGATION
Here at CBI we hold special Junior Congregation services for children in grades 3-7 on Shabbat mornings in the Chapel at 10:00 am. All children have the opportunity to worship together. They will put into practice the lessons they have learned during the week. Each student will have the opportunity to lead parts of the service, learn new melodies, and explore Shabbat teachings and stories. They will also gain the confidence they will need when it comes time to lead services for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrations. Junior Congregation will meet on December 3 and 10, 2011.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT
The kids have their sights set on the end of the month when they will have a much deserved winter break. The last few months have been busy as they juggle school, sports, friends and youth activities. As adults we understand all to well that need to constantly prioritize activities and juggle all we have and want to do. The first semester of Hebrew High will soon be ending and second semester will begin January 25, 2012. It is understandable not every student can attend every class, but I see first hand how important it is for the kids to see their Jewish friends during the week and learn. There are three more Dine and Dash scheduled this year, the next one being December 7th. Thanks to the Shwer Family for sponsoring our November Dine and Dash and to Jackie Wertel for December sponsorship. Our 11th and 12th graders have been participating in a unique program “Israel Inside/Out”. Each month they meet at a different Synagogue in the bay area where they meet with other Jewish teens to discuss important issues facing Israel today. For those attending USY International Convention in Philadelphia, we wish you a wonderful and inspiring experience. Join us Shabbat morning December 17th as we “send off” our delegation. Thanks to all who supported the USY Pumpkin Bread Sale. We donated pumpkin breads to the Jewish residents at Philip Benjamin Towers and earned money for tzedakah. Jacksonville hosted Kadima and USY Mercaz conventions last month and the kids enjoyed seeing their friends, meeting new ones and spending the weekend learning and having fun. Happy Hanukka!

The Festival of Hanukka begins on the eve of the 25th of Kislev, the day when the Maccabees cleansed and rededicated the Holy Temple, having vanquished Israel’s tyrannical oppressors. It is told that they found only one little cruse of pure, undefiled oil, but miraculously, it burned in the Temple menorah for 8 days, In commemoration, our Festival lasts 8 days, and every evening we kindle lights of oil or candles in a Hanukka menorah. One is lit the first night, two the second night, and so on, until 8 lights are kindled on the final evening.
The Menorah’s light is holy and may not be used for any ordinary purposes, i.e., to read by. Therefore, an extra light, or candle—a shammes– is added every evening, so that if the light is inadvertently used, there will also be non-holy light.
The menorah should stand in a special place, where such oil lights or candles are not usually burned. It should be placed in a window facing the street or at the left of a doorway, at about table level, but protected against the wind—to proclaim the miracle of Hanukka.
The lights are to be kindled directly at nightfall, when the stars appear, with all the family present, and they should burn at least half an hour. If someone cannot light them at nightfall, they may do so later, as long as the family is awake to watch.
In putting the oil lights or candles in the menorah, begin from the right end. In lighting them, begin from the left. The shames, the extra light, should be higher, but the Hanukka lights should be level, none higher or lower, and not too close to one another.
The Menorah is lit in the synagogue too, before evening services, Maariv, to heighten our awareness of the miracle of Hanukka. But this excuses no one, not even the person who lights the synagogue menorah, from kindling lights at home.
Women have the same obligation as men about kindling Hanukka lights. Therefore, if a man cannot be present when a menorah is lit, she should light one herself.
Late Friday afternoon, the Hanukka lights should be kindled before the Sabbath candles, and they should be able to burn until at least half an hour after nightfall. On Saturday night, the menorah is lit after havdala has been recited.

The candles are placed from right to left, as one faces the Hanukkia, as Hebrew is read, but they are lit from left to right, so that on each
night, the new candle is given special welcome by being lit first. Only the Shammash is used to light the other candles. The candles should be lit as soon as possible once dark. On Friday night, however, the Hanukka candles are lit BEFORE the Shabbat candles. At the close of Shabbat, the Havdala ceremony precedes the lighting of the Hanukkia.

BOOK REVIEW: REBECCA’S CHOICE: THE SURPRISING SEQUAL TO THE TALE OF IVANHOE

This reviewer, also a Rebecca, was a keen reader of Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe, not only for its romance and the beauty of its prose, but also out of appreciation for its positive Jewish stereotype. This Rebecca, however, found herself more than a little disappointed that Scott’s Rebecca didn’t run off with the impassioned knight, Sir Brian de Bois-Guilbert (as this Rebecca most probably would have done …). So it was with this shameful, never-confessed secret in mind that I embraced the chance to read Alexander Balman’s sequel, Rebecca’s Choice. Balman’s story begins before the very end of Scott’s novel at the point where Brian de Bois-Guilbert has died as a victim of his ‘contending passions.’ Balman, himself dissatisfied with Scott’s conclusion, renders de Bois-Guilbert as merely unconscious. What follows is a page-turning, high-paced adventure that journeys throughout the Near East, filled with danger and surprise and featuring knights, pirates, slaves, assassins, and even Maimonides! I won’t ruin the story by telling you what becomes of Brian de Bois-Guilbert, or his strange relationship to Daniel the proselyte. But I can tell you that Rebecca lives happily ever after… Balman’s novel cannot be compared to Scott’s Ivanhoe for the latter, in terms of quality of prose, narrative structure and historical background is by far the superior work. But taken on its own merits
this is an entertaining story with particular appeal for a Jewish audience.

I imagine it is human nature to gloss over the simple things in life; take for granted what we do so routinely. For those who were in Shul Shabbat morning November 12th you were likely moved, as I was, when the children of our Talmud Torah presented a tribute to our Veterans of the Armed Services. The simple act of coming to Shul to practice our religion or exercising our right to vote would not be possible if not for those proud Veterans. We appreciate the sacrifice they and their families make to ensure our continued freedom. Thanks to Ilana Dayan and Janice LeVine for teaching our children this valuable message. We are so fortunate to live in paradise and making Havdalah on the Beach in December is a terrific and special experience. If you have never joined us for this popular event, this is the year to do so. Havdalah on the Beach is December 3rd! See the flyer in this bulletin for all the details! Once again the Youth Department will feature BBQ brisket sandwiches at the Café during the Gift and Craft Show on December 11th. Stay tuned for new additions to the popular menu. The Gift and
Craft Show is a highlight of the year and I encourage you to support this important fun(d) raiser. Our CBI Family will gather Wednesday evening December 21st for the annual Hanukka celebration. We will be treated to music by Rebecca and Jeremy Douglas and of course, latkes lovingly prepared by the guys of the Men’s Club. JCC Suncoast has partnered with us and will provide children’s activities throughout the evening. Although Christmas is not our holiday, it is special to our Christian friends. Each year firefighters, police and hospital workers miss spending this important day with their families. We will decorate “cookies for the community” which will then be delivered to police stations and firehouses on Christmas day. It is a pleasure to provide this Mitzvah to our communities’ civil servants.

Congregational Engagement
This year, our congregation participated in its first Engagement Appeal on the High Holidays. In addition to our standard requests for funds to support CBI and Israel, we solicited you for your time and energy – we invited you to become more involved and active at CBI and to engage with your congregation, Judaism and God. The results were fantastic! Rabbi Luski’s sermon on the first day of Rosh Hashanah encouraged your engagement; his speech was inspiring and motivating, and so many of you responded. You indicated a desire to help the synagogue by volunteering in the office, serving on a committee or with Sisterhood or Men’s Club. You would like to be called to the Torah for an aliyah or to present a reading. You would like to attend a learner’s prayer service and explore Jewish meditation. The Engagement Committee has reached out to each individual who responded to our Appeal and is now in the process of planning programming to meet the needs expressed by the respondents. In the coming months we will be scheduling services and classes for learning about prayer, mediation, and other approaches to God and our sacred traditions. We will be working with those who would like to learn how to chant Torah and Haftarah portions, and assigning aliyot and readings to those who are prepared to present at this time. We will be coordinating with other branches of the synagogue and our board to offer committee and volunteer assignments. Now is the perfect time for you to become involved. Pick up an engagement card in the office and turn down some tabs if you haven’t already done so. Join the Engagement Committee and help plan the future for CBI. Call me at 381-4900, ext. 205 for more ideas or to make your own suggestions. We need you to make CBI even more dynamic and engaging. Come Be Involved!
