Spotlight on Riesling With the mild days of mid-fall upon us, it

is the ideal time to enjoy this traditional

European wine. The noble Riesling grape

is a pale German wine grape variety that

originates from Germany‟s Rhine region.

Muller-Thurgau is a cross between the

Riesling grape and Madeleine Royale.

The term “terror-expressive” is often used

to describe the Riesling variety because

the character of Riesling wines are greatly

influenced by the wine‟s place of origin.

For example, the Rieslings that come from

the Alsace region of France tend of have a

higher-alcohol content than their Germancounter-parts. These Riesling from

France are not meant to be drunk young,

like Rieslings from the Rhine region.

Fall Sangria Just because summer is over, it doesn’t

mean you have to give up the drink

that is synonymous with summer: San-

gria

This seasonal Sangria will provide you

with a refreshing drink after an after-

noon stroll through the woods viewing

the beautiful fall colours while using

up some of the many apples that are

available during the season.

Page 7Ce l lar NotesVolume 1, Issue 10

Our Riesling wines include:

Grand Cru Riesling - $70

GCI German Muller-Thurgau - $79

Cru Select German Riesling Traminer - $100

En Primeur German Riesling Traminer - $138

Generally speaking, Riesling wines tend to

be aromatic, flowery, and with a high-

acidity. Rieslings can be semi-sweet or dry,

and are very rarely oaked.

While Riesling‟s heritage can be found in

the Rhine region, we are seeing fantastic

Riesling‟s coming from Australian‟s Clare

and Eden Valleys. Additionally, Coastal

Chile, Ontario, New Zealand, Washington

state, and the New York state Finger Lakes

region are all producing excellent Riesling

 wines.

This fall, enjoy Riesling nicely chilled with

your favorite Asian cuisine or shellfish suchas scallops and lobster. Even mild curries

 work well with sweeter Rieslings.

Place the wine in a jug. Add brand, orange juice, and sugar. Stir until the

sugar dissolves. Add the fruits and chill

overnight, for at least 12 hours.

Remember, the apples you choose will

impact the flavor of the Sangria. Tart

apples like Granny Smith will make the

Sangria more tart than sweeter varieties

like Red Delicious.
