This Sunday, Sept. 27th, is our Second Annual "Builders Bash" and
Annual EAA 237 Chapter Picnic. This is a time to display our
members homebuilt, restored, or vintage aircraft. It is also a time to
share rides with our non-flying members so those of us who have
flying aircraft please give a member a ride. (Weather permitting).
We will start rides about 10:00AM and plan to eat our picnic lunch
about noon, then ride share till about 2:00 or when ever we are done.
Chapter 237 will furnish the meats (burgers, brats and buns) again
this year. Please plan to bring a potluck item to share at the picnic.
We plan to use the ramp in front of the old University Flight center,
now the Golden Wings Office and the grass area on south side.
On Monday the 28th, about 10:00AM we plan to move chairs from
Golden Wings to the Key Air facility for the AOPA Safety Seminar
on the 29th. We will setup chairs about 5PM on the 29th. Please help
when you can and plan to attend this fun and informative seminar.
October is our fund raiser, EAA 237’s Annual Fall Auction, at the
Chapter building. Start rounding up items now to donate to the
auction. Last year we had airplane rides, cases of aircraft oil, dinner
and sky diving certificates, many collectable items, aircraft, auto,
and home items that were donated. Jim from JJ's Auction Service
will be our auctioneer again and he will make it a fun time.
See you Sunday,

Maintenance expert Mike Busch explains the ins and outs of air/oil (oleo pneumatic) landing gear struts. This webinar explores the
design of oleos, how to tell when they need to be serviced, the proper way to service them with hydraulic fluid and air or nitrogen,
and tricks for dealing with leaky oleo struts.
10/14/15 7 pm Designing the Perfect Paint Scheme (A)
Scheme Designers founder Craig Barnett presents photos and renderings showing the do's and don’ts of paint scheme design.
Attendees will never look at aircraft paint schemes the same way again, and will come away well equipped to develop designs for
their own aircraft. Qualifies for FAA AMT credit only.

mistakes in both the oral and flying portions and how to avoid them.
10/28/15 7 pm Flying the Tailwheel Airplane: Key Points for Becoming a Great Stick and Rudder Pilot (W)
Master CFI and experienced tailwheel instructor Jim Alsip, suggests that weak stick and rudder pilot skills and/or bad habits inhibit a
pilot’s ability to become a proficient tailwheel pilot. This presentation is based upon Jim’s book Flying the Tailwheel Airplane, and
seeks to identify and offer solutions to the basic, yet elusive, stick and rudder skills. The subjects discussed are applicable to all pilots,
regardless of what kind of an airplane they fly. Qualifies for FAA Wings Credit
11/4/15 8 pm Carbon Monoxide - Silent Killer (AW)
Maintenance expert Mike Busch illustrates the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) in the cockpit by reviewing a number of CO-related
accidents. He discusses the physiology of CO poisoning, sources of CO in the cockpit, and provides specific recommendations on the
best CO detectors for cockpit use. Qualifies for FAA Wings and AMT credit.
11/11/15 7 pm Precession Precision: Taming Turning Tendency (W)
Many pilots report (especially when flying Light Sport Aircraft) that raising the nose causes the plane to yaw in one direction,
and lowering it yaws them in the opposite direction. This gives LSAs a reputation for being instable (or squirrely). In fact, these
aircraft are merely obeying natural laws. Retired physics professor Paul Shuch will teach you how to anticipate, detect, and conquer
gyroscopic precession. Qualifies for FAA Wings credit.

LOCAL FLY-INS & EVENTS Compiled by Chapter 237 member Randy Delfel
There may be inclement weather, changes, cancellations or editing mistakes beyond my control. Please call ahead to verify that the event is taking place as scheduled.
When we talk about safety, we normally tackle one issue at a time—thunderstorms
one day, taxi clearances the next. But out in the real world, any given flight can
bring together a whole range of interconnected safety issues:
Fly through that precip…or deviate and cut into my fuel reserve?
Climb above that scattered layer…or risk airsick passengers?
Fly with an underinflated nose strut…or delay and fly in worse WX?
Our new seminar reflects that reality. You'll follow along as we "fly" two fictional
trips, answering questions (and debating
answers) along the way. From preflight planning to tie-down technique, if it's related to the flight, it's fair game!

On September 19th, 2015 EAA Chapter 237 had the pleasure of visiting member Timothy Aanerud's home
workshop to see his plans built Zenith CH-701 project. Visiting hours were from 10:00 to 13:00. Coffee, pop,
and cookies was furnished. Many members gathered together to see the great work Timothy has done on his Zenith,
showing their support, enjoying refreshments, doing a little hangar flying and of course offer many helpful suggestions!
Below is the article written by Dave Peterson who attended the event! Thanks Dave for your submission!
Hello everyone,
Here are some pictures from the project visit at Timothy Aanerud's shop. I did not stay the entire time so don't
know how many people visited in total. I would guess there were at least 15-18 people that had stopped in by the
time I had to leave.
Tim is basically building a Zenith 750 STOL from plans with some modifications. The wing is similar to the 750
STOL design except that the leading edge is a modified fixed (slightly drooped) shape rather than using leading
edge slats. The intent is to get most of the STOL flying characteristics without loosing as much high-end speed
performance. The wing does include the standard two-section (inboard-outboard) flaperons per the original STOL
design. The one-piece horizontal stabilizer (stabilator) is a neutral cross-section form with trim tab rather than the
STOL's inverted, fixed wing form with elevator.
Some pictures show Tim discussing a technique which he used to finish forming the ribs. Tim also showed us the
nice hand-operated riveting toolset he had used. Tim said the workbench is adapted from the EAA Chapter 1000
workbench design with a modification for casters at one end to aid in moving the workbench by one person. The
first wing is already built and hanging near the ceiling (sorry, no picture of that). He is currently working on the second wing as shown on the workbench. One
picture shows the horizontal stabilizer (stabilator) along with the plans for the airplane.
The work is being done in his attached two-car garage which was well organized with materials and tools efficiently tucked away here and there as needed.
Thanks to Dick McKenney for bringing the refreshments!

event onto the tail of the One Week Wonder!
Rob Riggin, owner of
Flying High Coffee was on
hand making sure
everyone was awake and
flying high!
EAA’s president Jack Pelton was on hand at the EAA booth.
Plenty of seminars all day
long. Jim Laster presenting
“What’s new at Garmin?”
Big vendor tent in our parking lot!
Even Santa Claus was on hand for the event! With all the
new technology we have Rudolph can now retire.
The Pilot Town Hall, president & CEO of AOPA, Mark Baker
spoke about the latest issues facing general aviation.
MMM!!! There were LOTS of Food Trucks!!! Way more than pictured!!!
Lots of people attended the event even though the weather was sketchy!
Awesome Biplane! AOPA Sweepstakes Cessna
Julie Clark’s
airplane up close!
The EAA B-25H nose section and various parts arrived at the chapter 237 hangar yesterday. However, not everything was sent. John Hopkins (EAA Manager
Aircraft Maintenance) has been swamped with multiple projects (including the total tear-down and overhaul of the EAA Ford Tri-Motor) and either forgot or
didn't have many items. He will be forwarding them to us as soon as possible.
We are going to need one, two, or three team leaders to head up this project. Obviously, aluminum aircraft building experience would be very beneficial. That
does not mean you'll have to do all of the work! I have had many chapter members express their interest to participate with this very unique opportunity.
If you are interested in being a team leader, please let Kirk know at your earliest convenience! Members from other EAA Chapters are also invited to participate.
For those that are interested, we'll have a meeting at the chapter hangar to discuss the project in more detail at that time. The initial meeting will be specifically
for those interested in a leadership capacity. Attending the meeting will not obligate you into becoming a team leader. Let me know if you have any questions.

Here’s an email from Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association’s
Elizabeth Hannan—Events and Meeting Planner ...enjoy! (dated Aug 25 at 10:27 AM)
Good afternoon,
The AOPA Anoka Fly-In was a huge success! With over 2,700 in attendance and 160 aircraft we are happy to have another successful event in
the books. We want to send out a huge thank you to all of our dedicated volunteers who helped make this such a great event. We truly would
not have been able to pull off this event without you! AOPA is in awe of the hard work, passion and support our volunteers show when it comes
to the AOPA Fly-In’s. If you were unable to volunteer or make it to this event we hope to see you at another AOPA Fly-In, in the future! We are
hard at work planning our next two Fly-In’s in Colorado Springs CO and Tullahoma TN as well as scouting sights for our 2016 Fly-in’s.
Again if you were able to make it out to our event we want to say thank you for showing your support and if you couldn’t make it we hope to
see you at another AOPA event!
If you have any feedback from our event we would love to hear it, please feel free to share your thoughts on what you thought went well or
could be improved for future events.
Thanks again!
Elizabeth Hannan
