Au g u s t . . . this is when summer really starts to get long for me. Someone on Facebook asked me back in June, “What describes summer for you?” Summer for me is the first day that I wish it was October, and that day was June 8. It was 100 degrees. I love 45° and am just fine with 25°. Well, I digress. Anyway, the end of the summer is quickly approaching and I am as excited about this fall as any I can remember here at CH Baptist.

In September we will do a special recognition for 9/11 on the 10 year anniversary. Why do I look forward to this? I hope it leads our country back to remembering, and in remembering, back to prayer and seeking Jesus. In October we have our 3rd Annual Global Impact Conference. What a year we have had in missions! In November we are doing a marriage conference (Nov.18-20) with Bob and Cheryl Recorrd. I have had a number of opportunities to hear Bob speak and have always learned and been inspired. This can be a great weekend for your marriage. In December we have an incredible Christmas Musical. It has been in the works since this past spring. It is very different from what we have done before. It is a story set in Colonial Heights during WWII. I think we are even going to hear a little big band music from that era. It is story that will carry us from the manger to the cross. It will be awesome. I believe the Lord really has some great things in store for us this fall. I almost hate saying that. Isn’t that what the pastor is supposed to say? But I really mean it! I really believe we are going to see a great time of growth, encouragement, worship, and opportunity. Will you pray with me about what the Lord wants to do here this fall? Will you pray that He starts with you, and I will pray He starts with me?

Oh gosh, I may have forgotten the best thing! We will continue with our series on Romans. I am having more fun studying and preaching this book. I love being here each and every Sunday no matter what is going on. I love being your pastor.

EEvery Christian is on a journey that begins at the point of salvation. God created each of us for purpose. Along the way, you discover your PLACE in the body of believers. We all have a unique combination of personality, spiritual gifts, abilities, passions, and life experiences that God designed to create your unique role in the work of this kingdom.

It is written in Ephesians 4:12, that “... the training of the saints in the work of ministry, so that the Body of Christ may be built up”.

This September we will be holding a 5 week workshop at which you can discover new insights about yourself and the way God has knit you together. You will start to understand your purpose here on earth. Your unique combination of gifts, talents, ability and personality can only be offered to the Body of Christ by you.

The workshop will help you connect your passions and gifts in life to ministry within the church. It will also help you discover a fulfilled life through serving the Lord.

There are five sessions that will help you find your PLACE:

• Personality discovery - reveals a person’s style of communication and behavior in a specific environment

• Learning spiritual gifts - recognizing your spiritual gift through a comprehensive assessment

• Abilities awareness - learn about the environment where you are most effective and fulfilled

• Connecting passion with ministry - understanding our passion for certain things and how that motivates us within the church

• Experiences of life - realize the impact our life experiences have on where and what area we may choose to serve in

Sign up today at the Information Center to take this PLACE workshop that begins on September 7.

During each issue of the Connection we like to highlight our dedicated volunteers. Our volunteer for the August issue is Tanya Williamson, who volunteers in the Youth Department.

Tanya Williamson volunteers as a Small Group Leader. Tanya was born in Hopewell, VA. She and husband, Wayne, have two boys, Caleb and Micah. Tanya homeschools her boys and is a stay-at-home mom. She chooses to volunteer because she has always loved the Youth Ministry and since her children are there it was a natural place to get involved.

S ometimes in a competition, you are not really sure who wins and/or how they did win. This year for our Summer Program we are going to have some fun as we serve our Lord and at the same time the competition is going to be really simple…Just Show Up!!

Our staff has been divided into Red and Blue Teams. Winning and Losing for our teams will be determined by how the Red and Blue Teams fare church-wide. At the end of the Ultimate Attendance Campaign the winning team will eat a steak dinner, while the losers will have to eat beans and franks. (Go Big Blue) Each Adult Bible Fellowship Class, the youth and the children will be divided into Red and Blue Teams as well. Each class must come up with their own challenge. We’ll finish the Campaign off with a big Dessert Social for the whole church on Sunday Evening, August 21, provided by the losing team.

Red Team

Blue Team

And the trash talk begins:

I want everyone to know that I am still the blue team’s pastor. I care about you and what you are going through and will be praying for you throughout this summer program. I know that to suffer loss week after week grows discouraging and makes you begin to doubt yourself. I know when you are up against superior forces it is frightening. I know when leadership (ronnie) is confusing and disorganized it is frustrating. I care about what you are going through and just because I move from one victory to the next does not mean that I do not see you. Praying for you ‘ol blue . . . Your Pastor and leader of the Big Red Machine!

Go Big Blue!!! We have the chance to throw a couple of knockout punches and show the lowly red team they have met their match. Red Randy is talking a lot of smack around the office and already declaring victory. I don’t know about all that, but maybe if the Big Blue Team really does a great job over the next 4 weeks we can even make him sing a karaoke song during a victory party on August 21! Wouldn’t that be a hoot?

Sound fun? Well rally the troops and let’s make it happen!

Ronnie
