Imagine a book t i t led, Al l the Sins I Always Wanted to Commit but Never Did. This book would be about God?s mercy, God?s dai ly attempts to keep us from sinning. The people of Nineveh could have wri t ten i t (Jonah 3:1-10). These folks were bigt ime sinners. The prophet Jonah was sent to warn them that i f they continued thei r l ives of debauchery they would be destroyed. One would think that such major league sinners would laugh the prophet out of town. Amazingly, they did no such thing. Recognizing the mercy of God trying to keep them from destroying themselves, they changed. With thei r change of heart they left behind a whole l ist of uncommitted sins.

God?s mercy is about trying to save us from destroying ourselves. It is avai lable to anyone who is open to receiving i t . When Jesus cal ls his fi rst disciples, he says to them, ?Bel ieve the Good News" (Mark 1:14-20).The Good News is that Jesus saves us from the self-destruction of our sins. The cal l to fol low him means that he wi l l take us no matter who we are and what we have done.

God?s mercy is powerful and persistent. Think of al l the t imes that we have planned to sin and we did not fol low through. It is impossible to sin accidental ly. Sin is a conscious choice that each of us makes. The reason that we have not sinned when we could have is because we let God?s mercy save us. An obstacle was thrown in the way of committ ing the sin and l ike the people of Nineveh, we did not fight i t . God?s mercy comes to us in many forms. A homi ly, a friend?s chal lenge, a gui l ty conscience, even reading this reflection. Spending lots of t ime trying to hide our behaviors from others is an indicator of God?s mercy tel l ing us not to do i t . The more effort that i t takes us to sin is God?s mercy trying to keep us from doing wrong.

Al l the Sins I Always Wanted to Commit but Never Did wi l l not be a best sel ler. It wi l l not be a lurid account of sins committed. It wi l l be about al l the sins that were never committed because of God?s mercy. Sin sel ls, mercy does not. Who needs a best sel ler when we have God?s mercy helping us to be our best selves.

A LENTEN OPPORTUNITYLent, the graced season of preparation for Easter, is a wonderful t ime to do something to increase our understanding of the Mass. Christ Cathedral?s adult fai th formation team is offering the program ?A Bibl ical Walk Through the Mass? by Dr. Edward Sri at two di fferent t imes:

- Wednesday evenings (Feb 7, Feb 21, Feb 28, Mar 7, Mar 14) from 7:00 pm-9:00 pm on the 4th floor of the Pastoral Center

- Thursday mornings (Feb 8, Feb 22, Mar 1, Mar 8, Mar 15) from 9:00-11:00 am on the 4th floor of the Pastoral Center.

A Biblical Walk Through the Mass is based on the revised translation of the Mass. This five-part program takes part icipants on an exci t ing tour of the Li turgy as i t explores the bibl ical roots of the words and gestures we experience at Mass and explains thei r profound signi ficance. See, perhaps for the fi rst t ime, why we say what we say and do what we do every week at Mass. The words and gestures wi l l be seen in a new l ight, giving new l i fe to the l i turgical experience. The sessions, which are conducted in Engl ish, include input via video and small group discussion. Some ?homework? before each session is expected. MASS FOR THE PROTECTION OF UNBORN CHILDRENIn observance of the 45th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that legal ized abort ion, Bishop Vann invi tes the Cathol ic communi ty to observe January 22, 2018 as a day of reparation. Cathol ics are encouraged to practice fasting, abstinence, and prayer on that day. Bishop Vann also invi tes our Cathol ic communi ty, as wel l as al l people of good wi l l , to join together in prayer for an end to abort ion, heal ing for those involved in abort ion, and an increased respect for al l human l i fe at the Mass for the protection of unborn chi ldren on Monday, January 22, 2018. The Mass wi l l begin at 7:00 pm in the Arboretum. We wi l l be honoring Dr. Vincent Nguyen, DO, Pal l iat ive Program Medical Di rector at HOAG Hospi tal and advocate for those at the end of thei r l i fe. Imagina un l ibro con título, Todos los Pecados Que Siempre Quise Cometer Pero Nunca Hice. Este l ibro seria en referencia a la misericordia de Dios, el intento diario echo por Dios para que no pequemos. Este l ibro pudo haber sido escri to por el pueblo de Nínive. Estas personas realmente eran grandes pecadores. El profeta Jonás fue enviado para que le advi r t iera al pueblo que si continuaban con sus vidas de corrupción, serian destruidos. Uno pensaría que tan grandes pecadores se rei rían del profeta y no le harían caso. Sin embargo, esto no fue la si tuación. Reconociendo la misericordia de Dios que intentaba salvarlos de que no se destruyeran el los mismos, cambiaron. Con este cambio de corazón, dejaron atrás una gran l ista de pecados que no cometieron.

La misericordia de Dios intenta prevenir que nos destruíamos los unos a otros. Está disponible a cualquier persona que esté dispuesto a recibi rla. Cuando Jesús l lamo a sus primeros discípulos, Él les di jo, ?Crean en La Buena Nueva" (Marcos 1:14-20). La Buena Nueva es que Jesús nos salva de la destrucción por nuestros pecados. El l lamado a seguirlo signi fica que Él nos l levara, no importa quien seamos ni lo que hagamos hecho en un pasado.

La misericordia de Dios es poderosa y persistente. Tomen en cuenta todas las veces que hemos pensado en pecar pero al final no lo hicimos. Es imposible pecar por equivocación. El pecado es un acto que cada uno de nosotros elegimos cometer. La razón por la cual no pecamos cuando pudimos haberlo hecho es porque dejamos que la misericordia de Dios nos salve. Un obstáculo fue aventado hacia nosotros en manera de hacernos pecar pero como el pueblo de Nínive, no dimos resistencia. La misericordia de Dios viene a nosotros de muchas maneras, una homi l ía, un desafío de un amigo, una conciencia culpable, hasta el leer esta reflexión. Tomando bastante t iempo en tratar de tapar nuestra conducta hacia otros es una manera de que la misericordia de Dios nos ayuda a impedirla. Entre más energía tome en pecar, es la misma energía que la misericordia de Dios trata de impedirlo.

Todos los Pecados Que Siempre Quise Cometer Pero Nunca Hiceno será un l ibro con altas ventas. No será una expl icación en detal lé de los pecados cometidos. Sera sobre todos los pecados que no se cometieron por la gran misericordia de Dios. El pecado es fáci l de vender, no como la misericordia o compasión. Con la misericordia de Dios a nuestro lado ayudándonos a ser los mejeros seres posibles, ¿Quién ocupa de ese t ipo de l ibro con altas ventas?

Wade, el Obispo Vann invi ta a toda la comunidad catól ica a observar el día como un Día de Reparación. Se les invi ta a los catól icos a practicar el ayuno, la abstinencia y la oración en ese día.
