CALLED AND GIFTED—Discern your spiritual gifts! Discern your call! What is your vocation? God is calling you to a unique purpose in life, a work of love that only you can do. Come and begin to discover this work. The Called and Gifted Workshop is a two-day live presentation which includes Church teaching on the laity and lay apostleship; the nature of spiritual gifts, call, and vocation; and how to undertake the process of discernment. The workshop will be held at St. Paul Seminary, Cardinal’s Great Hall on Friday, July 8 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. and on Saturday July 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Register today at www.diopitt.org and click on Called and Gifted.

Our scriptures, on this 13th Sunday of Ordinary Time, teach us that our lives must be a complete turning to God in faith and trust in response to His generous gift of love given to us in Jesus Christ. Christian life is not a half-hearted venture. There was nothing half-hearted about Christ’s love for us; he loved us so much that he gave his life for us on the cross. But in our contemporary society, too many people are half-hearted, lukewarm, ambivalent and even double-minded about their faith: they believe in God but all short of turning their lives to Him in complete and radical trust. God would have us turn to Him like Elisha followed the great prophet Elijah who called him to be his successor.

The young man followed the Lord’s prophet unreservedly, wholeheartedly, placing his complete trust in God’s will for his life. Not only did he immediately follow Elijah, but he even “burned his bridges,” so to speak, offering the oxen as sacrifice to God and burning the plow in the sacrificial fire. There was not turning back for young Elisha, so confident was he in God’s love and power. And St. Paul teach the Galatians, and us, that sin, the habits and vices of the flesh, can cause us to turn away from God, away from His will for our lives. St. Paul puts this tension in vivid terms: he talks about the flesh and the spirit being at war with each other, contending for our souls on their way through this life: one leading to death, the other to life. And Jesus teaches his disciples that the kingdom of God is so important that they do not have time for anything that might distract them from its proclamation. Christ did not turn back in anger and retribution to the Samaritans who rejected his word, but rather continued resolutely to Jerusalem where He knew God was calling him to the cross. He would not allow himself to be sidetracked by insult or injury, and he did not want his disciples to be hindered even by their relationships to family and friends, or other allegiances. For He was on his way to do God’s will and there was no turning back. St. Paul taught the Galatians “to put up or shut up,” “to walk the talk,” “to be hot or cold, not lukewarm.” Just as Jesus risked everything for us, his very life on the cross, our faith demands that we risk everything, too. For our new way of life in Jesus Christ calls us to trust in God completely, to turn to Him wholeheartedly, to try His way, His will. Once we put our hand to the plow of Christian life, we should not be continually second-guessing ourselves, looking back at the familiar sins and associations that led us away from God in the first place. Like St. Paul teaches, we must choose sides and live our lives accordingly. Like young Elisha and Jesus himself, we must turn to God and not look back. The Galatians learned that we are called to live a new freedom given to us in Jesus Christ, the freedom to service in the Spirit. “Do not take on yourselves the yoke of slavery a second time,” St. Paul instructed those early Christians. He might as well have been writing to us at the beginning of the 21st century. We need a few more Elishas, not afraid “to burn their bridges” when God calls, not afraid to abandon their former way of life if it distracts them from their new life in Christ. Turn to God and away from sin! Do not look back! Turn to God today! Rev. Richard A. Infante, Pastor
